[image id: a youtube comment which reads "Good talk! Except you used Handel's old name. Not nice to 'dead name' people."]
I'm losing my mind at this comment because I cannot tell if it's serious or not. if it is a joke then I feel like it's transphobic, making fun of the concept of deadnames, so I'd rather it be serious. but in that case, it's still misguided
for context, in the video (which is in English) a German musician says Georg Friedrich Händel instead of George Frideric Handel. and again, yes, it is indeed not nice to deadname people. but that's... that's not why Händel changed his name ? I'm not even sure it would've been considered a name change per se in the historical context, back when it was still common to translate names between languages even for non-monarchs/popes.
Mozart (who was born around the time of Händel's death) has the middle name Amadeus. except he never actually used that name. he was baptised Theophilus, called Gottlieb in the German sprachraum and used Amadeo/Amadè while working in Italy. but they all mean the same thing and his death certificate was in Latin so Amadeus it is.
even today my mother and sibling have two versions of their names depending on if they're speaking Afrikaans or English. and my friend Nicola goes by Nicole in France (because the French hear the pronunciation of /nikola/ as the name Nicholas)
I feel like there's a difference between people who actually change their name (for whatever reason, and that absolutely should be respected) and people who are just multilingual

The piva is a type of bagpipe played in North Italy and in Ticino, Switzerland.
In Advent time, bagpipers traditionally play Christmas melodies, the best known of which are called Pastorale (“pastoral”, “shepherd's”) or simply Piva, a local term that was also intended to designate the very instrument.

I finally made it through all three-and-a-half hours of Giulio Cesare, and my conclusion is that Händel probably just really felt like writing 50 arias about thirsting for revenge and everything else was just a pretext so he could use those arias for something.
And this is one of those 50 arias.
