Obviously players don't NEED to make absurd looking characters, but the fact that the game allows this shows off the extent of the game's customization. Even if you're not looking to make a Frankenstein style character, Perfect World has A LOT of customization sliders for everything from eye size to arm length.

This one is a bit of an oldie, as it released back in 2004, but Eve Online still has some of the best customization in any MMO. Even though there are a ton of options, players never really get to see much of their customization, as the game takes place almost exclusively in your ship. Still, if you want to see an awesome character creator at work, check out Eve Online. Especially since it went free to play in November, 2016.

Aion

Aion originally launched as a buy to play subscription game by NCSoft, but later went free to play. Despite originally launching in 2008, Aion still looks quite beautiful even today and features some of the best character customization I've seen in an MMORPG. Just take a look at the video above to see what the game's character creator offers.

Despite never launching in the West officially, the Japanese version of the game is playable by anyone from the West without any IP restrictions. The sci-fi MMORPG from Sega features one of the most in depth character customization systems of any MMO. Interested in checking the game out? Champions Online

Rpg Games With Character Creation

Champions Online is a unique game on this list because it's not another fantasy themed MMORPG. Instead, it's a superhero themed MMORPG, which means players get to create their very own superheroes. The game originally launched back in 2009 as the successor to City of Heroes and one of the game's most prominent features is its in-depth character customization system. Given the nature of superheroes, the developers wanted every player to have a truly 'unique' character. Not only do players get to customize their character's body, but they get to create their own unique costume as well.

Blade and Soul

Blade and Soul originally released in South Korea back in 2012 but didn't launch in the West until early 2016. While the game doesn't offer nearly as much character customization as Black Desert, the game has a lot of sliders to play with. Blade and Soul also has a unique art style, which makes character models stand out a bit more too.

APB Reloaded

Although not an MMORPG, APB Reloaded features a surprisingly in-depth character creation system. I mean, just take a look at the video above and see for yourself. For those that haven't heard of APB, the game originally launched as simply 'APB All Points Bulletin' with a buy to play model, but after bankruptcy it was acquired by GamersFirst and relaunched as a free to play game and was renamed APB Reloaded.

While not completely necessary - as games such as The Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War have shown - having the ability to customise your playable character adds a whole new layer of immersion everything on-screen. By creating a protagonist to represent you, you enable a strong emotional connection between you and your character, enjoying the journey just that little bit more.

There are so many games out there that offer fantastically expansive character creation tools, but some stand head and shoulders above the rest. For the purposes of making things fair, we will not be counting customisation available through mods, so unfortunately for all you Skyrim enthusiasts, that one is out.

For those of us who just love to spend a solid couple of hours playing around in the character creation screen, these are the best that video games have to offer.

10. Monster Hunter: World

Monster Hunter conquered the West in 2017 with its latest and greatest - Monster Hunter World. Take control of your hunter and together you will face gigantic dinosaurs, working together with your friends in a little posse of monster-killing-mayhem.

Being a game that you will no doubt play online and enjoy showing off your mad hunting skills, you’ll want your avatar to be as equally stunning as your bravery. Monster Hunter World’s character creator is absolutely gorgeous, and very detailed. There are dozens of hair styles to choose from, with colour, tone, and saturation options bringing infinite possibilities.

You can choose from tons of examples for voice, too, picking the exact right pitch of scream for when you inevitably fall to some of the game’s toughest beasties.

Not to mention, there are options to customise your cat-like Palico as well. It’s like 2 character creators rolled into one.

Stick that beautiful face into some of the beautiful armour sets available in the game and you’ve got levels of customisation the likes of which are rarely seen in such an action-focused game.

Tuesday Brewsday 28: Touched by an Angel

Hello again, welcome back to another short deck tech with my on going theme of playing with the white color pie in Magic. Over the course of last week while I was enjoying playing some great games with White Nickle, I came across another interesting mono white list. This deck relied on Angel synergies and thanks to a recent addition from Kaldheim, Stalwart Valkyrie, the deck really made an impact one me. So I set out to brew something similar that suits my own style of play. It doesn’t that it’s easy on wallet either.

Part of the Angels’ game plan is to utilize life gain and evasive creatures to beat your opponent. Seraph Sanctuary is a land that gains you 1 life when it enters the battlefield, and whenever an Angel does as well. Since it can only add colorless mana, I didn’t want to include copies of Radiant Fountain. Instead I went with the slower Kabira Crossroads because it taps for white mana. One measure to fight flood, because it will happen with high land counts, is that I’ve included 2 copies of Secluded Steppe. All these lands are perfect targets for Kor Skyfisher as well, giving further value to the 2/3 flyer of legend. One thing I’d like to add is that if you decide to play Guardian of the Guildpact instead of Seraph of Dawn, you can easily swap out Radiant Fountain for Seraph Sanctuary. Maybe even a split between the two lands and two creatures would be the most ideal, but that will have to be something you decide best fits your style or metagame.

The creature that absolutely makes this deck worthwhile is Stalwart Valkyrie. This lovely Angel is white’s version of Delver of Secrets/Insectile Aberration. Normally a 3/2 flyer for 4 mana, Stalwart Valkyrie can be cast on the cheap for two mana if you exile a creature in your graveyard. In order to play the Valkyrie for 2 mana, more often than not the deck required creatures that can sacrifice themselves if need be. The creatures I had in mind were Benevolent Bodyguard and Children of Korlis. Bodyguard was in the Angel decks I ran against as well. It’s a sold creature that can protect another creature or help you deliver the final blow. I don’t recall ever seeing Children of Korlis in the decks I faced, but I think I love this inclusion. It’s like a Prismatic Strands attached to a creature, but can only prevent life loss to you so long as it isn’t lethal. Notice how it specifically states loss of life, so it can protect you from those pesky black burn decks if you time it right.

Another one drop creature is an Angel that beats the vanilla test, so I’m inclined to include it. Segovian Angel is a 1/1 creature with Vigilance and Flying. This little Angel, although unassuming in nature, checks off all the boxes we need in a one drop for our Angel deck. For now, we can’t get much better than this.

What can I say about Kor Skyfisher that hasn’t already been said? There is a reason you see this card pop up in many decks that run white. There are many targets in this deck for Kor Skyfisher to take advantage of as well, making this 2/3 flyer for 2 mana an auto include. It may not be an Angel, but Kor Skyfisher deserves an honorary halo.

Answered Prayers is a special card that I absolutely loved when I first saw it. Who doesn’t love that art!? By running 22 creatures, in addition to Cartouche of Solidarity & Cenn’s Enlistment, there are plenty of opportunities to trigger this angelic enchantment. Don’t discount the fact that it gets around Sorcery speed removal as well and that being a 3/3 flyer it can end games quickly.

In the four mana slot I like two options. If you want to continue with the Angel theme than there is no better choice than Seraph of Dawn. This 2/4 flying lifelinker can help keep you alive and possibly help bring your opponent’s life total down to zero in the process. Alternatively, you could run Guardian of the Guildpact and still kind of be on theme, although you’d definitely want to change the mana base around and drop the Scroll of Avacyn. Regardless, the Guardian’s ability to have protection from mono colored means that in most cases this creature is untouchable as well as unblockable. You can’t beat that value in a creature!

Since we’re running 23 lands in order to cast our midrange spells on curve, there will be times in the late game we tend to “flood out”. As a safety valve to release the rushing waters, I wanted to include Cenn’s Enlistment. Thanks to its Retrace keyword, you can turn excess lands into more creatures. The tokens may not officially be Angels, but I’ve always thought of Kithkin as little cherubs anyways.

Scroll of Avacyn is one Angel themed payoff that essentially cantrips for two mana and gains you 5 life. It’s literally a better version of Revitalize which draws you a card at instant speed and gains you 3 life. If you were set on running Guardian of the Guildpact though, I’d probably recommend running Bonesplitter in its place. This fearsome weapon can be given to the spirit to really put the pressure on an opponent.

No midrange white deck would be complete without utilizing the best available removal. That just so happens to be Journey to Nowhere and it’s slightly more expensive but more flexible sister Oblivion Ring. Someday, maybe WotC will bless us with Path to Exile, which I think is a completely fair card in pauper. You hear that Gavin!? Try to make it happen if you’re ever reading this please 🙏

The sideboard is your typical mono white sideboard, that is until you come across Crib Swap. This card is fantastic when you’re up against flicker deck or decks that rely on creatures dying. The 1/1 creature it leaves behind is more often than not, a better solution than what you faced before. Unmake is undoubtedly a better option, but unreliable to cast, whereas Crib Swap is a ton easier. If you’re playing on a budget and don’t want to spend 80% of your decks $ on the acolytes, I would like to suggest Dawn Charm. This modal spell allows you to be flexible and does the same thing the acolytes try to do, but only once.

Give your blessings to Avacyn and lead her valiant Angels to victory. Let the heroes of the great halls sing about the Stalwart Valkyries and how they Answered Prayers in the heat of battle. To The Boy I Didn’t Love (But Thought I Did)

Disclaimer: If the people being talked about happen to read this, I’m omitting names in order to protect your identity and privacy. This isn’t meant to bash anybody. This is extremely difficult for me to write and post. I am telling my truth because I am trying to empower young girls in a way that I was not, but wish I was.

I’ve only ever loved one boy. At least, I thought I loved him, in the moment. Little did I know our relationship would be a walk through hell. I haven’t ever been in a serious relationship, except for this one where I thought I loved the guy (if you can even call it a relationship because we “broke up” every 4.5 seconds). I’ve dated a couple of guys after the one that I thought I loved. Those ended quickly. I really didn’t give those guys a chance, though. After this guy, I didn’t open myself up to any of the guys that showed interest in pursuing something with me. I’d go on a date or two, tops 3, and find some stupid reason to end things or get really distant. I was left with an enormous fear of getting my heart broken the way that “first love” guy did.

I guess we can start with this “love.” I’m the kind of person who loves with my entire heart and being. I am like this with my family and friends, and I was like this with this guy. It all started at the end of my freshman year of high school. It started badly, in a dramatic high school fiasco kind of way. I would never start a relationship, of any sort, like that again. But, I really liked him. I was blind to a lot of what I was doing. We did a lot of breaking up and getting back together. During these breaks, usually initiated by me, I would block his phone number and avoid eye contact with him at school – only to go cry about it the second he was out of sight. Eventually, I would unblock his number, text him a long message about why I missed him, and ask him to be my boyfriend again. He’d say yes, and it was all fine until the next fight. This is why I hate sending long text messages now. Thinking back to this time, my extremely low self-esteem makes me cringe. Who would have thought that a few years later I’d be writing a blog about self-empowerment?.The thing about our breaks were that I would be sulking about him, eating my bodyweight in Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, but he would be messing around with other girls. The whole Ross and Rachel “we were on a break” situation in Friends hits home. While Ross and Rachel were on a break, Ross, in order to show his love and commitment to Rachel, should have respected her enough not to hook up with someone else. They were on a break, not done forever. If you haven’t seen Friends, 1) go watch it right now, 2) sorry for the spoiler, but the show has SO much more to it than this incident. Anyway, I love Friends, but this is about me spilling my guts to my readers, not obsessing over the show. Lover boy would mess around with other girls, girls who happened to be my friends, while we were on breaks. I liked to think that it was because I wasn’t giving him what he wanted from mr physically. While that was most likely true, he also did this because he never really respected me. While that’s his fault, part of the blame in this situation would have to be mine. I allowed him to treat me as poorly as I treated myself. I had the lowest self-esteem in the entire world. I thought I was an ugly, stupid, worthless piece of garbage. It saddens me that I once chose to live at war with myself. I let him tell me who I should be because I didn’t know who I wanted to be.

You are probably thinking, why did she stay with this guy? Because (I thought) I loved him. I wanted to tell him every part of my day, and I wanted to hear about his. I wanted to make him smile and laugh. I wanted him to be happy. I wanted him to be happy with me. I trusted him enough to show him parts of my being that I hated. I found comfort in silence when he was around. When he held my hand, I felt this unique sense of joy and warmth. I was a blind girl. Writing these sentences, again, makes me cringe. Not because I have this deep hatred towards this guy (I did for a while, but I’ve mostly gotten past it), but because I was searching for love from him to replace the love I didn’t have for myself.

One day that comes to mind is that of our sophomore school pictures. I was on the tennis team that fall, and he was on the soccer team. Our outdoor after-school practices got cancelled on that day because the heat index was too high for us to practice outdoors. While we were waiting for our rides home, him and I talked at my locker. He was really mad at me because I had asked another guy for help with chemistry homework rather than him. We were fighting, and I went from yelling to crying in a matter of two minutes. I remember the red dress I was wearing that day. It was sleeveless and had silver bubble-studs on it. My hair was naturally curly and I actually felt a little bit pretty that day for the first time in a really long while (I had crazy negative self image issues at that time, the epitome of my barbie phase). This freshman that we knew from marching band saw me at my locker and ran up to give me a hug. This kid was very nice, but a bit of a strong character. I’ve learned to love these strong characters because they are unapologetically true to themselves. I aspire to be like that. Anyways, he came up to me and told me I looked beautiful and that my dress was also beautiful. He noticed that I was crying and not really responding to him. He hugged me again as more tears fell down my face, and said, turning toward my boyfriend, “Is this guy bothering you? Do I need to have a word with him?” This was a sweet gesture on this kid’s behalf to want to protect me, but I politely declined. My boyfriend didn’t do a very good job at hiding the fact that he was laughing at the kid, and as soon as the kid left, he broke out into intense laughter. I slammed my locker door shut and walked away. About a week later, we were back together. My tennis friends and I would slack off at practice watching him play on game days. The field he played on was (not-so) conveniently right by the tennis courts. When he got a water break on one particular day, he saw my teammates and I and blew me a kiss and then pointed at me and winked. My teammates thought we were “total relationship goals,” which is the saddest thing ever to me. From the outside, in that moment, it looked cute and sweet. But that relationship was anything but that..This story makes me so thankful for the 180 degree growth that I’ve had in the four years that have passed since that moment, and the two and a half years that have passed since being with him. I would never let a guy talk down to me like that or try to manipulate who I get to be friends with, or even who I get to interact with. I would never stand by and let somebody laugh at another person maliciously like that. I would never let a stupid gesture like blowing a kiss make me forget about all of the bad stuff. I would never let watching a guy stop me from doing what I want to do, or love to do. It isn’t about tennis and soccer, it’s about the fact that I looked at him like he was the best thing in the world. He was on a pedestal in my mind with a halo around his blonde curls.

Let me tell you some of the best things in the world: my mom’s hugs, my niece’s laugh, and any song by Adele. Let me tell you some of the things in the world that are not the best: high school boys.

This post isn’t just a “let’s crap on the ex boyfriend,” kind of thing, though. I was at a really bad place in my life while we were together. I was dealing with a mental illness that I was desperately trying to convince myself that I didn’t have. Depression is difficult, and my situation was difficult. I was angry at the world, and I was angry at everything. I took a lot of anger out on this guy, because I thought I had a legitimate reason to dump it all on him – he didn’t respect me the way that he should have, and he messed around with other girls when we were on a break. While, it sucks that he didn’t treat me well, I need to acknowledge two things. It is 100% his fault that he treated me poorly, but it is my fault that I didn’t walk away from it for so long. It is my fault that I forgave him so many times; actually, that I forgave him at all. However, he didn’t deserve this extreme amount of anger I would dump on him that wasn’t even because of him. He didn’t need to go through that. It was my battle to fight, and my anger to work through. I shouldn’t have taken out that anger on him. I shouldn’t have tried to use confrontations with him as a way to find my empowerment. I was right to be angry at him when he did something that angered me, but not when I was mad at the world and he hadn’t done anything to me at the time. I realized that, how I went through depression, and I went through being hurt by him, he went through being hurt by me and my actions also affected him in a way that he didn’t rightfully deserve. I went through depression, he went through storm Indira. I’m not calling him a saint, by any means; he did a lot of crappy things. But, as an adult, I look back and see that I wasn’t a saint either and the forest-fire of a relationship that we had was both of our faults. Realizing that, after all of this time, helped me heal. I forgive myself. I also forgive him. This experience helped build me into the empowered individual that I am today.

It’s terrifying because I didn’t want to be with him any less when he hurt me. I guess I haven’t been in a relationship since him because I’m scared of getting to that place with someone else and getting hurt the way I did with him. He started dating another girl very quickly after we finally called it quits. When he broke up with that girl, he started dating another girl right away. That’s his life, and I am no one to judge him now, just like he is no one to judge me and my decisions. We go to the same university, and it’s a big place, but we still run into each other from time to time. A lot of times I look away, and so does he. It’s just easier that way. Sometimes one of us says “hey,” and the other reciprocates, but neither of us stops walking and that’s the end of that. I don’t really think of him too much, except for when I see him or when I hear Bon Jovi. I unfriended him on Facebook and unfollowed him on Twitter; not because I hate him, but I don’t need to see it and I don’t need to contact him, so there’s no point in being connected via social media. It’s so weird though, we treat each other like mere acquaintances, but we knew each other extremely well. I’ve grown so much in the time since we’ve been together, enough that he doesn’t really know me anymore. He only knows who I used to be. I only know who he used to be too.The world works in funny ways..I don’t miss him, I also don’t hate him anymore. I’ve accepted that he is a chapter in my past, and while I’m over him, I’m still getting over the damage that relationship did to my ability to trust and be vulnerable with people I date. I learned that devotion is not love. I learned that absolutely nobody gets to talk down to me or make me feel small. I have found a voice in realizing that I am a good person and I deserve only the best. I have found love for myself in my writing and in the way I treat the people who I love. I love that I have the gift to be able to be so open about my mistakes in order to try to help and empower other people. I have grown into a brand new person than that girl in the red dress. I donated that red dress to Goodwill when we broke up. I hope somebody can make better memories in it than the ones I did.

The moral of this story is that you are the decision-maker in terms of everything that happens in your life. You can choose who you let into your heart. You can choose to stand up for yourself and what you believe to be right. You can choose to walk away from what no longer serves you. You can choose to not forgive somebody if their actions deeply hurt or anger you. You can choose to stop loving somebody after they hurt you. I have grown into a new person with pretty good self-esteem, and an empowered mindset. I have grown a strength that is undeniable and always ready to go. I will never let somebody treat me the way that this boy did, and I will also not let myself treat anybody the way that I treated this boy. I have grown, I have learned, I have coped, and I have overcome. I accepted the fact that I have clinical (biological) depression, and I have gotten to a place where it is pretty well under control. I have walked away from friendships that were hurting me or holding me back. I have worked so hard towards achieving my goals. I put all of my energy into bettering and satisfying myself. It’s amazing how taking care of yourself and loving yourself can completely change you as a person.

I will never go back to being pushed around like I was 4 years ago. I’m a brand new me.

.One day I want to fall in love. I want to find a partner who loves me, respects me, empowers me, and makes me happy. I want to do the same things for him. But I don’t want this for a good while. I want several years still to continue growing and establishing this new and empowered version of myself. I will always work on improving and empowering myself until I’m in a grave. But, for the next several years, I want to continue being selfish about it, the way that I have been for about a year now..I’m going to end this gut-spilling post by inserting some quotes from a song that I think really relates to this situation, “Love Me More,” by Maggie Rose. It’s all about loving yourself first, and loving yourself enough to stand up to people who are hurting you, even if you love them. I saw Maggie live in Chicago in May when she opened for Hunter Hayes. She’s an excellent performer. I highly recommend you check out the song here. Now, here are some lyrics that really resonate with me.

You can and will move on to better things. Your light is way too bright to be covered by somebody who doesn’t even see it. t hope this story served as an inspiration for you. I got out, did some thinking, and realized how much better than all of that I am. I am empowered, I am no longer lost and insecure the way that I was with him. I no longer take orders or ask for permission to be who I want to be.

The Other AI: How Aesthetic Intelligence Can Transform Your Brand

When you see or hear the term AI, I’m guessing you think it stands for artificial intelligence.

It does, of course.

But artificial intelligence isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when I think about AI.

For me, AI also refers to aesthetic intelligence.

I call aesthetic intelligence the other AI.

It’s a concept that I’ve taught at Harvard Business School in an interdisciplinary course called The Business of Aesthetics. It’s also the subject of my upcoming book.

But enough about me.

Let’s explore aesthetic intelligence — what it is, why it’s important for your business, how it can give you an edge over your competitors, and examples of companies with high aesthetic IQs.

What is Aesthetic Intelligence?

Let me start with what aesthetic intelligence is not, because the word aesthetics is loaded with connotations.

I’m not talking about design, although design is important. I’m also not talking about beauty, because sometimes aesthetics can be less than beautiful, at least in the conventional definition of beauty, but still utterly compelling, exciting, and pleasurable.

Aesthetics is the pleasure that we derive from perceiving an object or experience through our senses.

It may include visual beauty, but also appeal to our other senses—like the plush texture of cashmere, the sonorous timbre of an alto’s voice, a scrumptious meal, or an aromatic fragrance.

Aesthetic intelligence isn’t necessarily the ability to create beauty, because that would refer to artistry or creativity.

Aesthetic intelligence is our ability to understand, interpret, and articulate feelings that are elicited by a particular object or experience.

Essentially, aesthetic intelligence is the development of “taste”—the ability to discern what is desirable and why and how to attain it.

When you apply aesthetic intelligence to commerce, things start to get really interesting.

The Intersection of Aesthetic Intelligence and Commerce

Applying aesthetics to a product or service and eliciting the right emotional cues so that consumers are interested in buying it takes a great deal of empathy.

You need to consider not just what arguments you can make—or what words you can use to persuade shoppers to buy your product or service—but what you can do to connect with them on a human level.

We have to remember that people, not machines, buy the vast majority of products and services. People are emotional and make decisions largely based upon how that product or service makes them feel.

In many cases, it takes more than just a digital forum to connect with them on an emotional level.

The cosmetics industry knows this very well.

Many of the best cosmetic brands grew through giving shoppers free samples because they knew that their claims of offering great products were only validated once consumers had the opportunity to experience them—their feel, their smell, their effect on the skin—firsthand.

Whether it was offering a gift with purchases in a department store or even providing testers through magazine sense strips, people responded sensorially, rather than logically, to their products.

Many people became loyal customers during this process.

If you want to differentiate yourself from your ecommerce competitors, you need to start thinking about ways to integrate more of the senses into your own digital business proposition, because the digital environment essentially only touches one and a half of the five senses: strong visuals and modest sound.

Sound doesn’t even get a full vote of confidence in ecommerce because sound quality on a lot of devices is poor compared to listening to state-of-the-art Sonos speakers, for example, so the audible experience of engaging with a brand online is still diluted.

But imagine the difference it would make if you appealed to just one more sense in the course of your customers’ shopping experience—if your competitors were armed with only sights and sounds, but you were able to provide a tactile experience as well.

The playing field would be tipped in your favor.

Applying aesthetic intelligence to your brand can truly be a game-changer, but cultivating and elevating it requires a concerted and deliberate effort.

The first step in developing aesthetic intelligence is to reconnect with your senses and to unblock some of the things that we tend to block for the purpose of survival.

Once you start receiving and experiencing those inputs again, the second step is to begin to decipher and develop a point of view—much like you do in other parts of your life about how different elements can come together.

Then you have to edit and curate these aesthetic inputs, which is equally important, or else the experience will be muddled and overwhelming.

When you add ecommerce to the equation, the concept of aesthetic intelligence can become really challenging because the goal isn’t just to provide customers with a great experience in the moment.

The goal is to build anticipation for a great experience and to leave customers with great memories of the experience. We refer to this as “the halo effect” of great aesthetics.

Where Ecommerce Companies Go Wrong

Interactions with your brand have to not only be exceptional and aesthetically pleasing; they also have to be consistently exceptional throughout the customers’ journey.

This is where many ecommerce companies go wrong.

Many companies are so focused on the transaction itself that they only consider how to get a shopper from the homepage to the checkout.

The experience with the brand is over as soon as the customer checks out.

But the relationship obviously shouldn’t end there.

The reality is that the reason most people remember a brand—and why they come back—is that the experience resonated emotionally.

Brands who master aesthetic intelligence connect with consumers on a deeply emotional level to the point that they wouldn’t consider shopping anywhere else for that product or service.

Leadership and Aesthetic Intelligence

I’m a big believer in the fact that aesthetic intelligence starts at the top.

Aesthetics shouldn’t be outsourced to the creative team. CEOs need to be skilled in aesthetics as well.

Fewer and fewer companies can get away with treating their products or services like commodities, just like very few CEOs would get away with saying,

“Well, I’m just going to outsource all the financial and strategic processes to the CFO.”

A CEO has to own the performance and show real competency in all critical areas. A good CEO has to have taste as well, which doesn’t mean that he or she has to be able to execute on the aesthetic decisions.

Execution may fall in the hands of a creative department or another functional or artistic talent, but being able to know what quality is—in a way that Steve Jobs did and Howard Schultz still does—is a huge differentiator for a company and it has to start with the leader.

If the CEO and other business leaders don’t have the empathy to think about how a customer is going to feel by experiencing their product, they’re not going to have much of an advantage in the market.

In fact, they’ll eventually be overtaken by a robot.

Having good aesthetics is really a human advantage, and it’s innate.

But as we go through life, partly because we compartmentalize and partly because we’re overcome with so much sensory input in our daily lives, we often become numb to it.

One of the key responsibilities of a CEO is to clearly communicate how every employee, regardless of role, can contribute to making the brand more aesthetically exciting and valuable to customers.

Examples of Brands With High Aesthetic IQs

Let’s look at a few examples of aesthetically intelligent businesses.

1. Airbnb.

Airbnb is one of the best examples I’ve seen of a company differentiating itself online through really good aesthetic decision-making and application of aesthetic intelligence.

Airbnb didn’t invent the model of renting out homes and other spaces.

That really started 20 years earlier with Craigslist, but Craigslist’s problem was that it was a fairly low-cost option and not one that people would choose for a rich experience when they were traveling.

People went to Craigslist because it was a quick and easy way to reserve a bed for the night.

Airbnb was founded by two graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design.

Rather than coming from the technology space, they came out of a design mentality and took the industry by storm.

They cracked the code on building engaging websites for short-term lodging rentals. In addition to generally being user-friendly, Airbnb masterfully creates a sense of delight and desire for exploration. From the images they select to their font choices to the way users navigate through the system, Airbnb stimulates people’s imaginations.

2. Disney.

Disney is a learning organization. Their R&D center, which they call Imagineering, is constantly coming up with new ways to delight customers.

Disney spends a lot of money to have a couple thousand people working in a lab-like environment because they know that if they didn’t continue to create new ways to delight customers, people wouldn’t go back to Disneyland or Disney World or even watch a Disney movie.

It’s the reason the company has been able to keep the magic going for more than 70 years after Walt Disney passed away.

Disney does an excellent job of consistently delivering on the actual experience but also, just as importantly, on the anticipation and memory of it.

Half of the fun of going to Disneyland or Disney World is what happens when you’re in the park and you’re waiting to get on the next rollercoaster. But the other half is what happens weeks before you even get on the plane—when you’re thinking about going on the trip and you see how excited the kids are.

There’s a huge build-up before you even get to Orlando or Anaheim, and the memories you make aren’t just relived the day after you’ve left the park. The memories remain for years—indeed, often for a lifetime.

Companies need to follow Disney’s lead and be much more mindful about keeping memories alive.

They need to think about ways to get people to not only be excited about the experience, but so excited that they want to come back.

3. Gucci.

Millennials are spending more on experiences than they are on just individual commodity products, and this shift has been especially evident in the luxury industry.

The fastest growing segments in the luxury market are not products, like handbags and shoes, but experiences like fine dining and travel.

Gucci, the famous luxury brand in the fashion world, is bucking this trend by actually selling an experience.

The reason consumers are currently compelled to shop at Gucci isn’t because their bags are capable of carrying a different number of items than a Louis Vuitton or Balenciaga bag.

It’s the emotional connection customers have with Gucci and the experience of shopping with the brand, which is just as essential as the bag they’re buying.

Sell an Experience, Not a Commodity

These three brands are just a few of the many examples of organizations leveraging extraordinary aesthetics to consistently delight customers and keep them coming back.

Through their focus on aesthetics, innovation, and connecting with people on an emotional level, they’ve transformed their business in ways that make them indispensable to their customers.

They know that people rarely buy products and services for logical reasons. There’s always an emotional impulse behind it, and good marketing and branding taps into that.

Regardless of the business you’re in, always bring as much of yourself into the equation as possible.

That’s your differentiator and what makes your business intriguing to shoppers.

It’s your voice, your belief system, your commitment, and your general reason for being, so never let anyone tell you it has to be reserved for the “personal” part of your life. Business should be personal as well.

And remember to focus on selling an experience—not just a product—that is informed by rich aesthetics. If you do it right, customers will reward you with their business and their loyalty.
