BACKGROUND —
anavieve was raised by her uncle, alongside her cousin, in a quiet town not far outside of new york.
they lived out the back of the bar that her uncle owned, but they frequently visited new york city due to other work of his.
anavieve idolised her uncle, though it mightn't have been the best idea. his work wasn't legal, his dealings criminal, and while he protected anavieve and his daughter to the best of his ability, they were exposed to nasty dealings far too young.
in particular, anavieve was always getting caught up in his trouble. he was her favourite person; she always wanted to be like him, be near him, even when it wasn't safe.
once anavieve was old enough to understand that he was involved in some dodgy things, she still wanted to join in and to help.
when told she was unable to join in on his criminal activity, anavieve naturally found her own trouble.
it was through her own criminal activity that anavieve got into chemistry, after a failed experiment in chemistry class at school gave her the idea to start using dangerous concoctions for her own gain ( to melt or blast doors open, for example ).
from there, anavieve's talents and skills only grew. her participation in the criminal activity escalated, even despite her uncle's growing concerns and warning.
it reached its climax shortly after anavieve's twenty-fourth birthday; by this point, she had gotten herself mixed up in some pretty dangerous dealings, as had her uncle - separately.
her and her uncle's paths crossed in a heist gone wrong; it was the first time it had happened, despite knowing mutual people and frequenting the same places, and it ended in his imprisonment.
anavieve's uncle had attempted to help her out of a mess when he was finally caught by law enforcement; he assisted her with her getaway split seconds earlier.
so anavieve promised her uncle that her time involved with trouble of that scale was over, in order to apologise for getting him put behind bars for years to come, and she put her knowledge to a much more mundane occupation.
trouble still calls out to her, she's constantly itching for adventure, but her weekly visits with her uncle have kept her hands clean - so far.
WANTED CONNECTIONS —
clients - people that anavieve tutors in chemistry, for whatever reason ( perhaps they're in college, need to know for research, or just wish to learn more. they're likely going to be shocked when they learn just how smart she is.
crime friends - those she was close to when she lived a life of crime; she never did anything to directly hurt others, but it was pretty sketchy. they could be past that time in their lives, too, or maybe they're still in the thick of it and are terrible influences for anavieve.
new friends - or tbh, they could even have been older friends, but they're not in the crime scene in any way, and they're connections that help anavieve stay out of trouble ( whether they know it or not ! )
adventure friends - they like excitement just as much as anavieve does, so they're constantly by her side when she's off on some new adventure.
exes - flings, hook ups, one night stands, or fully committed relationships. anavieve is an extremely love oriented person, so she's definitely somewhat of a serial monogamist. she has a habit of getting overly attached too quickly, so i could see her coming on too strong being an issue with her love life. all other details can be plotted between us ! any gender, similar age preferred.
love interest - i think it would be super nice if anavieve found somebody who really encouraged the better sides of her. someone who helped her find her potential in safe and healthy spaces ! all of the details can be plotted between us, but the tldr is that i just think she deserves a healthy relationship. any gender !
anavieve is also open to so much more, i'm happy to brainstorm or listen to any / all of your ideas !

𝐄𝐍𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐃 𝐂 𝐕𝐈𝐑𝐔𝐒
infected in koocheng by one of carla’s j’avo, it doesn’t take long for simmons to undergo mutation. strangely, he has more mutations than the standard biohazard antagonist -the centaur form, the dinosaur form, the “recovery” humanoid form, the mega-fly form - and if we count the unused concept art, he also has another insectoid form to move to the quad tower (as well as the ability to duplicate himself), though these aren’t canon, it’s interesting he seems to be in a constant state of mutation.
though both carla and derek’s mutations revolve around identity - his differs from carla’s (whose final fight involves her identity and physical form dissolving and becoming more and more unstable), simmons’ mutation is made entirely out of parts of him. each form is bad from his body, from visible spines, hands, teeth, eyes - and reforms back into it’s human. it’s easiest to see when he “dies”, his body reforms piece by piece, skull coming back together before splitting apart again. simmons remains simmons during all of his mutations, unlike carla who becomes a huge mass of nondescript colourless flesh (other than the “ada” humanoid figures). in the biohazard 6 official complete guide, it’s stated:
It has been reported that he can mutate freely into multiple forms while retaining his sense of self, and his own skin and internal organs harden and transform into powerful weapons.
when considering the c-virus is made from t-veronica and the g-virus - as well as the enhanced virus given to piers presumably containing traces of t-abyss and t+g due to the traits shown - it’s extremely hard to pinpoint what is in the strain simmons was infected with. looking at all viruses, from t-howard to kodoku to phobos and so on, i can’t find anything even remotely similar. at first, it could be presumed traces of the g-virus are in there, most notable in giant eyes in his dinosaur form, though this does not reappear in any of the other - and given how his body reconfigures itself in these forms it does not appear be randomly developed eyeballs like g. whilst simmons undergoes more and more severe transformations (whilst getting bigger, appear to be less complex - from mammal, to reptile to insect), he is completely able to reform to human - unlike birkin - and there does not seem to be the asexual reproduction aspect of it either. whilst in the insect form, he does absorb in zombies into his own mass (and the concept for him turning them into duplicates of himself was abandoned), this is not the same thing.  the insect-like traits could come from veronica, but they aren’t particularly strong enough to be considered the tell-tale traits of the virus.
otherwise it appears to be a completely unique virus (again, in comparison to the one piers has which exhibits the electrical powers of t+g etc).
instead, i’m going with the idea that simmons was given the most pure form of the c-virus (using jake’s blood to remove the imperfections of g and veronica, ultimately making it a whole new virus) in as it’s ability to constantly recover is something that carla would want for her own mutation but presumably, simmons would have fallen under the same hive-mind that c-virus infected have, particularly the j’avo. a reversal of the roles they had held previously, with simmons now being the subservient one. another idea could be that she wanted him to bond with the virus and keep his consciousness and sense of self so he was painfully aware of what was happening - she outright says this, though it seems odd given how well he seems to handle the virus. it’s assumed she did not expect just how well he would take to it.
𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
this form is a quadrupedal creature capable of using his organic matter (bone) as projectiles, and after sustaining damage, mutates further into more of a centaur-like creature with a humanoid “torso”. this form is the fastest one, able to outrun a train, and far more agile in it’s movements than the later one. i believe the mindset of the host does effect some aspects of the mutations that occur, and given this is when simmons is at his most confident, it makes sense that this is a powerful and aggressive form that is capable of acting and thinking rationally. he even spares the time to constantly insult and berate helena/leon/ada, and is very aware of what is going on rather than being driven by some kind of animal instinct or impulse - although later on the rooftops cannot tell the difference between ada and carla anymore.
𝐇𝐔𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐈𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌
in between his main forms, his body reconfigures into his human form - albeit incredibly scarred, with exposed muscle and flesh, his voice changing. it’s interesting to not unlike many other villains, simmons has the ability to shift from b.o.w to humanoid at will and does so repeatedly throughout many of the fights. up on the roof of the quad tower, this humanoid form changes somewhat - referred to as a “scorpion”, in this form simmons is almost entirely humanoid save for the mass of bone and muscle from his back, forming a scorpion-like tail that he can attack with. whilst powerful, he is much more vulnerable to damage and much weaker than his prior mutation. similar to his final form, he is able to absorb material in order to heal himself.
𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐎𝐒𝐀𝐔𝐑 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌
unlike his first form, simmons begins to act much more on instinct in this form - he relies on brute strength and force. this form has more vulnerabilities than the former, given the eyeball weak point and the muscle on his back - but has armoured plates similar to the napads covering them.  even with the lack of rational thinking, his form forms these plates to protect himself in response to being attacked by leon and helea in his first form - the desire for self-preservation making him larger, stronger and more armoured.
𝐌𝐄𝐆𝐀-𝐅𝐋𝐘 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌
after consuming the surrounding zombies, simmons mutates into that of an insect-like form (originally in concept art based on a camel spider, which was much cooler imo and really shows the anatomical nature of simmons’ mutations better). despite being a “lower” form of life, it is much larger than the previous forms and gains the ability to spite toxic material at leon and helena - something that may be inherited from the t-veronica genes, as well as the insect form in general. the body is protected by an exoskeleton - but each time he takes damage, he continues to absorb in zombies to keep him going. in this form in particular, he seems to be based entirely on instinct, thus absorbing in the lightning rod over and over again rather than noticing what happened and...not doing it.
as he “dies”, his body reforms - and attempts to mutate once again as he’s impaled, but due to the lack of blood fails to do so (and it’s a comical amount of blood...).
𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐀𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐒𝐈𝐒
given the...ridiculous amount of blood that comes out of simmons (as well as being struck by lightning over and over not killing him, but being impaled by something small does apparently) , i’ve decided to rewrite that last part. it’s likely, even if it took a long time, that simmons would have eventually mutated and his body reformed - especially given the sheer catastrophic deaths and amount of zombies that would be in china meaning eventually, they would find their way to him and he could absorb them into himself - although it would likely be a much weaker and smaller form to allow him to get somewhere where he would be able to fuel his mutation enough to revert to his humanoid recovery form.
for post-six roleplay purposes, simmons is still infected. he is able to maintain his humanoid form, though has suffered extensive scarring across all of his body, and in order to survive must consume much more food to provide the energy and mass in order to hold himself together. it’s extremely unlikely he could go back to being human, but it’s something that could perhaps be possible with the anti-c vaccine made from jake (although we don’t know how it works as it’s barely mentioned, and likely could kill anyone who has already mutated, especially someone like simmons whose mutation is keeping him alive).
should he lose control or willingly mutate further, i would like to include the ideas from the art director:
I thought it would be interesting if his arm turned into a dinosaur when he attacked, he ran on four legs, and did other things that he did during his previous mutations.
this really highlights the chaotic nature of the c-virus. even someone like simmons who has shown he has an incredible amount of control and sense of self during his mutations, would continue to mutate over and over. whilst the j’avo can be killed, they don’t seem to share any particular weaknesses (they combust and turn into chrysalids, and much like veronica don’t really seem to be effected by fire; haos and simmons are both damaged by electricity but it does little more than the melee attacks, etc).

What’s Up With That Shit?
So, I thought it would be fun to do something besides just a standard review— welcome to “what’s up with that shit,” a (hopefully recurring) piece where I’ll look at an issue/aspect of the genre as a whole and ponder about what’s up with it. Hopefully by the end I’ll reach a conclusion, but who knows! It’s the journey, not the destination.
For the inaugural What’s Up With That Shit? I’m going to be looking at three 80s horror movies with surprising depictions of mentally ill villains, and picking apart 1) why I like them, 2) why their portrayals are unique/good, and 3) why we don’t see many similar portrayals anymore. Ready? Let’s kick this off.
What inspired me to do this was a movie I watched last night, called Pin (link to the full movie on YT). Released in 1988, Pin follows the life of two siblings, one of whom (the older brother, played by one of the actors from Cube) becomes obsessed with a medical dummy his father used to use to teach them (via ventriloquism). The brother, Leon, becomes obsessed with the idea that the dummy is alive, and this only worsens following the death of his parents. He murders his aunt and attempts to murder his sister, Ursula’s, boyfriend. She destroys the dummy, causing Leon’s personality to fracture (Pin takes over completely).
Leon is described at one point as a paranoid schizophrenic (versus having DID/MPD, but this is from the 80s so I think shitty understanding of mental illnesses can be given a mild pass), and his sister is hesitant to send him away, wanting instead to help him at home, where she can be there for him the whole time and support him. At the end of the movie, it is revealed that Ursula has found in-home care for Leon and visits him often, continuing to look after him despite Pin taking over completely. The horror of Pin comes from the tragedy of Ursula watching her older brother degrade and being unable to do anything; Leon’s not turned into a monster by the end of the movie— he’s still a human, and one who hasn’t been abandoned or forgotten either! Damn.
Next up, Mortuary. Now, this is a little more standard than Pin with regards to its portrayal of its villain, BUT, and that’s a big fucking BUT: the villain of this movie was not shaped by his own actions, but those of his father. Paul Andrews, Mortuary’s antagonist, is a high school boy working in a mortuary with his cold, verbally and emotionally abusive following the death of his mother (the parent he was close to). He’s portrayed as strange but isn’t hated by the other students— our main characters even sympathize with him. Later in the film, it’s revealed that the main girl’s father tried to get Paul help for his mental illness, but Paul’s father refused and the problem spiraled out of control to the point where Paul began killing.
The final movie I want to look at is Fade to Black, wherein another character, emotionally, verbally, and I believe physically abused (to an extent), winds up killing people who had harmed him (beginning with the aunt who had been abusing him since he was a child). I talked about this movie a little bit in my review of Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker, but it was the first movie I saw out of these three, and it immediately struck me with its portrayal of Eric Binford as a tragic character. Yes, he is the movie’s slasher, but rather than some supernatural force or blind hatred, Eric’s reason for seeking violent revenge is easily understood. It’s hard to fault him.
Now for the juicy bits: what’s up with these films? Why haven’t we seen even more portrayals of tragic mentally ill characters in horror, or just tragic villains in general? What’s up? The most modern horror movie I can think of with a mentally ill character is Split, which I haven’t seen due to the overwhelming shitstorm of a portrayal it is. I remember the outcry online leading up to the movie’s release, and hearing that the way it showed mentally ill characters was actively harmful— I don’t need to give any money or attention to that kind of movie. Then, what about all the horror movies with scary asylums, featuring titles like “Madhouse,” “Dark Asylum,” and “Insanitarium.” What the hell happened?
Unfortunately, it comes down to money, as many of these things do. If people are paying to see a horror movie, they want to be scared! Fuck the plot! Fuck the characters! Bring on the gore, bring on the tension, give me some damn nightmares! I enjoy horror movies with plot and I’ve fallen into this pit a lot, feeling unsatisfied when I sit down to watch a horror movie and it’s not scary. Mortuary is the scariest of the above three movies, but even then it’s too cheesy to really be scary. Horror movies that aren’t scary don’t sell, and, unfortunately, mentally ill people are an easy target. They’re not an audience film companies are afraid to alienate, meaning open exploitation.
All three of the films listed above, were, I believe, smaller budget films, which could also lend them the freedom to portray these characters as tragic versus simply as evil. There’s more pressure on big budget films to make back their budgets and appeal to target audiences, which also helps explain the apparent degradation of portrayals of mentally ill characters. I think this could also be expanded into a pretty interesting discussion of supervillains and their portrayals, though my expertise lies mostly with Batman, which is an interesting case: as Bruce Wayne he’s actively involved with villain support programs, sometimes offering villains jobs at Wayne Industries if they’re trying to reform, and he himself is shown to go to therapy as an adult, which is rare for superheroes.
Touching briefly on supervillains VS horror villains, though, I think there’s a less apparent outcry about supervillains because of the depth and attention they’ve received over the recent years (Harley Quinn having her own comic series and becoming a deep character, etc. etc. etc.) whereas horror villains with mental illnesses are JUST monsters. They’re given no depth, because depth doesn’t sell horror films, especially not to a broad audience. Horror CAN touch successfully on sensitive topics and provide interesting commentary (American Mary is a prime example), but that limits the interest in it. One of my largest gripes with the progression of horror is the expectation that viewers don’t want to think about the movies they’re watching. There does seem to be a shift away from mindless content, but there’s also an over-saturation of remakes. The 80s and, to an extent, the 90s, had a wealth of content that may not be as well-produced as its genre siblings, but provided viewers with real depth of settings, premises, and characters! Strange films, underground films, but DEEP films. Films that could get away with portraying mentally ill villains as still human.
What’s up with that shit? Like a disappointing amount of things, money is what’s up. Commercial success, broad appeal, and the need to make more than a film’s budget. Sucks, but c'est la vie. At least we’ve got a little pool of movies we can return to when we’re fed up with seeing bullshit like Split hit the big screens, and we can do our best to avoid contributing to sales for these kinds of movies. Making a small dent is better than making no dent, after all. Maybe we’ll see horror with a message start to leave the territory of independent films and hit big screens in the future. You never know

THE TOO GOOD TEN with Hand Made House
Los Angeles pop band Hand Made House - made up of life-long friends Tucker Click (lead vocals) and Josh Nardine (drums) with Maison Thomas-Eudy (guitar/vocals) and Amin Mortada (guitar/vocals) - celebrate the release of their latest single, “Like The Weather” which follows up the seven song project Honestly, Honesty that released late last year. “Like The Weather” gives fans a taste of an edgier side of pop for the four-piece band and one that they’re excited to explore. Get to know know about the new song and the guys of Hand Made House by checking out their Too Good Ten interview below:
Tumblr media
1. Hand Made House was originally started and created while pursuing degrees at Berklee College of Music. What aspects/techniques/advice from your time there do you still implement in your music or personal lives?
TUCKER: I think we learned to time manage well. We were working, going to school, and trying to start a band from the ground up. I personally took a lot of inspiration out of being surrounded by such talented people all the time as well. I had some professors that really believed in me and the band and I think that set me on fire with direction and drive.
JOSH: Obviously many of us have direct skill sets that we learned from being at Berklee whether that be production, songwriting, or music business. But one of the best things I feel we learned at Berklee was how to be in a band. Berklee gave us the opportunity to mess up and learn as we go without major consequence. We learned how to build our business and write with people. I attribute a lot of our growth to that community whether we knew it or not.
2. Hand Made House is such an interesting and cool name for a band. What’s the story behind it?
TUCKER: I was writing a song about my friend who was going through a really difficult time and was feeling very alone. The last verse of the song had the lines:
“If hand made house / And heart makes home / You’ve got what it takes / To build one of your very own”
I felt like we had built a home within our band and it felt like we had built it from the ground up. I remember telling the other guys I wanted that to be our “thing” we bring to the music industry. I want our fans to want to feel like a community when they come to ours shows. So, we pulled that line and named the band!
3. Being in a band can feel more like being in a family which can have its benefits and challenges. What’s each member’s strongest contribution to the band? How do you guys normally sort out creative differences?
MAISON: Yeah, I feel like we can identify as a family more than most since most of us live together and have lived together for years. We always talk about just how crazy it is that it just works. I mean, we obviously have our moments but we usually sort everything out when it comes up. I don’t think we ever leave a room still dwelling on a problem - we always just talk it out until everyone is back to messing around again. As far as strengths, I think Tucker and Josh have a really good sense of organization. They are the ones to make sure projects get done. Tucker always pushes people to be their best selves and do everything they need to. Josh is always right there with him doing the fun nitty gritty behind the scenes stuff. Amin is the most creatively driven, he always wants to write new stuff and sends new ideas to our group chat every week. I’ll throw my strengths to comic relief.
AMIN: Generally, all our songs are collaborations within the entire band. Usually, Josh and I are heavily involved in the early stages of a song. We’ll workshop an instrumental track a few times before its picked up by Tucker and Maison to be developed even further. When it comes to dealing with creative differences I take the approach of thinking about what’s best for the song rather than what I think is right for me. I think it’s important to separate your emotional attachment from an idea and look at the bigger picture. Generally when the band is running things that way we come to an agreement/compromise much faster.
Tumblr media
4. Congrats on the release of “Like The Weather” which you guys have described as your “edgy comeback” after last year’s pop-driven EP, Honestly, Honesty. What was the inspiration behind this one? Why did you feel inclined to comeback “edgy” than straight pop-focused?
TUCKER: I remember writing this on our drive to LA, while we were still releasing Honestly, Honesty. I think I had a lot of bitterness from being stuck inside due to quarantine and was generally upset with the direction of the music industry at the time. I also had a conversation with Amin and Josh about how I was getting serious imposter syndrome about our last EP, because they’re generally happy songs, and I simply wasn’t happy. I feel like “Like the Weather” is my first touch on a slightly different lyrical style I’ve always wanted to do, and pushes us in a direction I’ve always wanted to try.
JOSH: You know, for the most part we all come from Rock/Punk backgrounds. It’s what we all grew up on and pulling from that felt right for us. About a year ago we had a pretty strong realization while writing Honestly, Honesty about what our identity and sound as a band would be and could be. Back then we struggled to know what the right move was when we were writing those “pop” songs that made it on that EP. We didn’t know how we could possibly transition to that sound and It was a bit of an identity crisis for us as a band. I think we all realized the nature of modern music is very Genre-Fluid and that’s been the approach we’ve taken ever since. “Like The Weather” I feel is the culmination of all those things. I think it’s the beginning of Hand Made House working to create music without restraint.
5. One of the lyrics in "Like The Weather” is “I get drunk / I go and get tattoos” What’s every members go-to drink order when out at a bar? Have you guys drunkenly gotten tattoos before?
TUCKER: It depends on the bar, but I have to say - I love a margarita. And funny enough, the first month of quarantine I gave myself a stick and poke tattoo at like 5 AM after a night of multiple spicy margaritas. It turned out surprisingly good.
MAISON: Well, I’m definitely allergic to alcohol. So, probably water. However, I do wish I could drunkenly get tattoos. One time I had a dream I got a tattoo, and I still want that tattoo.
AMIN: If it’s the afternoon, definitely a Bloody Mary. Night time, I’ll take a nice IPA. Yup...I don’t wanna talk about it.
JOSH: I’m not a big drinker, in fact I barely ever. However margaritas are really wonderful mostly for the salt rim.
Tumblr media
6. You guys recently played the Music Lives 2021 Live Stream festival. What was the experience like? What’s one of the biggest learnings from putting together a performance for a massive live stream like that?
AMIN: Honestly, it was just like any rehearsal. You guys got a sneak peak of what rehearsal looks like during that show. It was super fun and its a great feeling being part of such a great line up.
JOSH: It was a ton of fun! I think it was cathartic for all of us knowing we haven’t played a show in over a year. Playing that set was one of the first times in a while I felt like I was really performing for someone even though it was over a computer screen.
7. How was it finding out your single “In Bloom” had gained traction without much promotion? Does it make you rethink promotion strategies each release?
TUCKER: It was really interesting to see “In Bloom” grow the way it did. “Through You” had been our biggest song for over a year, and “In Bloom” slowly grew until it popped up to our #1 spot. I think it goes to show that - even if we promote a song a ton, the people will always listen to what they want to listen to. Especially with indie artists like us who don’t have the means to promote a song like major label artists do.
Tumblr media
8. What’s one piece of advice or quote – related to career or life – that you wish you would’ve known sooner?
TUCKER: Success is all a mentality. I know there are people who wish they could be in my shoes, just as much as I wish I could be in other people’s. I think it’s important to realize where you’re at currently, respect that spot and continue to try and grow.
MAISON: As far as career advise, growing up with family in the industry and spending so much time with people working at the top of their career paths. I’ve learned that just being a good person and fun to be with will get you far. Other than that, my dad told me once, “be better” not meaning that I was doing bad or that I wasn’t “reaching expectations”. He just wanted me to be better than my own expectations or limitations that I put on myself. As small and simple as it was, I think about it everyday.
9. For each member, if you could only listen to (5) artists for the rest of your life who would they be?
MAISON:
Kings of Leon
Young The Giant
Nothing But Thieves
Foo Fighters
The Band CAMINO
TUCKER:
Nothing But Thieves
Lil Peep
Phoebe Bridgers
The 1975
Frank Ocean
AMIN:
A Tribe Called Quest
Stevie Wonder
Children of Bodom
Steel Pulse
Iron Maiden
JOSH:
Elton John
Jesse McCartney
Frank Sinatra
The Fray
James Taylor
10. What’s the rest of 2021 look like for Hand Made House?
TUCKER: It’s hard to tell for sure with the state of everything that’s going on, but I think we’ll start playing shows again once we feel it’s responsible. I think we’ll be releasing new music that’s outside the box for us, and continue doing what we do best - playing shows and writing music!
