Don’t you hear my call though you’re many years away - Chapter 2
A/N As usual for me, I don’t care about my word count, but it’s a fairly long chapter. Forgive and grammar or punctuation issues. If you enjoy this, please reblog!
Warnings: Angst and can get dialog heavy.
Summery: You the reader finally gets to travel back in time.
Tumblr media
That morning, plans started being made. The first decision was when I should go back, and being that summer was just around the corner, that was the obvious choice. But for how long?
After some discussing, I agreed to a month. It would be hard, seeing as I’d have to figure out how to hide this from my family, which I hated. But the idea of spending a month in 1971 London was too enticing. Especially when it involved seeing Queen.
Within a few days the plan was made. I told my family I’d be staying in the dorms with Sierra for the summer, saying that she got a job and hoped I could too. I’d leave my phone with her so she could post updates to my social media periodically. She’d answer my text and emails, but phone calls would have to be avoided.
Maybe when I got back I could get a job, I had worked through the school year at the college itself, but I still didn’t like lying to my family. All they asked was that I come home for my Dads birthday.
Everything was being set in motion.
The last few weeks of school flew by and crawled at the same time. Between studying for finals and planning my ‘trip’ I didn’t have time for much else, that included not thinking about ex boyfriend.
**
I emerged from my last final of the semester, into the summer sun. May was coming to an end, and in June I’d be leaving.
I turned my face toward the sun, closing my eyes, soaking up the light and heat.
My phone buzzed in my hand, drawing me out of my mindlessness.
Looking down I saw a text from Claire
Let’s go get you some funky threads!
Followed by
Yeah I have no clue about slang in the 70s! It’s time to shop hunny!
Laughing, I started my walk back to my dorm.
**
“Ugh corduroy is disgusting” I moaned as I stepped out of a dressing room.
“It is, but they look good on you” Dustin said from where he was sitting in a weird wicker chair. He had found this vintage clothing shop, and decided it would be the best place to look for my 70s wardrobe.
“The styles then were not made for my body type” I said as I looked at myself in a long mirror.
“You’re beautiful babe!” Claire yelled from the other side of the small store, where she was rifling through the clothes.
I laughed and rolled my eyes as I returned the dressing room.
“What about these hair styles” Dustin spoke up again. “Some of them are...yeah...they just are, no words!”
I had just stepped into a pair of plaid bell bottoms that I paired with a white billowy top. This outfit isn’t too terrible, I thought to myself.
Once again I left the dressing room, and responded to Dustin.
“I was thinking of wearing it straight. That was a style then right? Cher had long straight hair...” I said.
Claire rounded a short rack, with a pile of clothes in her arms. She was loving this.
She looked me up and down, smiling she said “get that! It looks great on you! Makes it look like you have legs for days!”
She shoved the pile of clothes at me and piggy backed off my suggestion of straight hair.
“Straight hair was a style, but you’ll have to learn the makeup too!” She said cheerfully.
“Really” I mumbled from behind the heap of clothes “maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. I have to buy a whole new...used or whatever wardrobe, and now the hair and makeup styles? I don’t even keep up with today’s styles!”
“It will be worth it thought!” Dustin said, still scrolling through his phone.
Claire came up behind me and started steering me back into the dressing room all while saying “you have to look the part!”
The “That 70’s” fashion show continued for an hour. And I did indeed leave with a new wardrobe. I walked away with 2 pair of the shortest shorts I’d even owned, 3 pair of bell bottoms, including the corduroy, 7 tops, a few fun tees, and 2 pair of shoes. One of which was a pair of platforms that Claire insisted on, saying everyone wore them. I just hoped I didn’t break something while walking in them. I even found a dress that I actually liked. I wasn’t sure I’d need it, but Claire said to get it.
The entire drive back to campus Claire was going over the things I needed to buy once I was back in 1971. If she written this list on paper, it probably would have been a mile long.
Meanwhile, I sat quietly in the back seat, with my new, musty, apparel.
Dustin was eyeing me in the rear view when he spoke over Claire’s rambling.
“Hey, just focus on one thing at a time. Get a room first, then see what’s happening around you. No need to go overboard” he said.
Nodding, I mumbled “room first.”
Back in my dorm, I began sorting through the clothes so I could wash them, in hopes of ridding the musty smell. But the time alone was giving me time to think. Time to worry. Worry about what would happen if I wanted to come home sooner? Worry about what if something happened here while I was gone? What if something happened to me while I was gone?
This allowed the panic to set in. It was overwhelming and devouring any excitement I felt.
I began to feel nauseous. I was cold but sweating. I sat on my bed, taking deep breaths, trying to steady myself. I could do this. I wanted to do this. It had been my idea.
I would do this. I would go back to 1971 and see Queen, possibly even meet them. It would be a fun and exciting, albeit scary, adventure. I would do this.
The days that followed my friends didn’t allow me much time to myself. I’m not sure if it’s because they knew what I was going through, even without me saying, or because they knew I’d be leaving soon and they wanted time with me. Maybe it was a bit of both.
**
The night before my trip I couldn’t sleep, I tossed and turned, my mind was constantly going over scenarios or advice I’d been given.
Finally at 6am I allowed myself to get out of bed, so I went over my check list for the thousandth time.
At 7am I started getting ready. I had to be at Ryan’s at 9am, so I didn’t rush. I made sure I looked at natural 70s makeup and pictures of Cher for hair inspiration.
Once I was ready, I grabbed my suitcase and backpack, and headed to my car.
I still had some time before I was supposed to arrive so I swung through Starbucks and grabbed coffee for everyone. Especially me. Exhaustion was setting in.
I’d completely forgotten what I was wearing when I pulled up to the window. The barista gave me an odd look, and I mumbled something about a 70s themed party. Who had a party this early in the day, I thought to myself. But she must have bought it because she laughed as she handed me 2 trays of drinks.
When I pulled into the driveway at Ryan’s I still had about 10 minutes before I was supposed to arrive. Not wanting to seem too eager, I stayed in my car, leaning my head back and closing my eyes. Being exhausted and nervous a the same time was too much.
Suddenly there was a knock at my window, which caused me to scream and almost spill my coffee.
Ryan was laughing so hard he could hardly stand up straight when I flung the door open.
“Are you trying to give me a heart attack?” I asked, clutching at my chest.
He continued to laugh as he tried to invite me inside. I swatted at him and told him to grab the coffee.
Once we were inside and Ryan had stopped laughing at me, we sat in relative silence, sipping our liquid energy.
Finally he spoke up “you look like you stepped right out of the 70s.”
“Thanks...I’m scared” I finally said it out loud.
“Hey, Y/N, it’s ok...” he was cut off by a loud knock at the door, which then flung open as the rest of our friends hurried in.
There was so much talking and so many questions that I couldn’t even respond. The overwhelming feeling was coming back and my stomach was in knots.
After my friends had downed their coffee, we headed to the room where the “machine” resided.
It was like a dream. I was usually on the other side, waving goodbye to my friend, but the roles were now reversed. They stood there, their faces full of excitement and expectation, while I stared at them with wide eyes and my blood rushing in my ears. My fight or flight instinct was kicking in, but I stood my ground.
I looked each of my friends in the eyes one more time, when I finally came to Ryan, he said “see ya soon”.
That must have been my warning, because the next thing I knew, I felt the air leave my lungs, like I’d been punched in the stomach. It wasn’t at all what I expected. I thought I’d feel like I was falling, instead it was like the snap back when you’re bungee jumping.
Abruptly the feeling stopped, gasping, and I felt soft grass under my hands, I heard the sounds of a city, and I opened my eyes to the bright sun.

I sat down with Josh Hurd, co-founder and partner in Los Angeles’ newest menswear store, Proconsul Clothing. We discussed his background, inspiration, and goals for this new classic menswear destination that features such storied brands as Alden, Tricker’s,  Wolverine, and Bleu de Chauffee.
BH: When and how did you first start working in Men’s apparel?
JH: My first retail job was in the Men’s Sportswear department at Filene’s Department store in Massachusetts. It was the late 80’s (yes, that long ago), and it introduced me to every aspect of Men’s clothing: suits, shoes, casual, luxury brands, accessories and bags. From there I worked at the Gap, where everyone went to be trained… I learned a lot about how clothes were made and I just fell in love with retail. Every day is different and I like being in service to people. Men especially love knowing that they have a guy who gets it and becomes their go-to for their wardrobe.
Tumblr media
BH: What inspired you to focus on menswear for your career?
JH: As a teenager I woke up one morning with this revelation that I didn’t like the way that I looked. I was always artistic and loved to draw. So I drew a picture of what I wanted to look like and went out and bought clothes that achieved that look. It always evolves. Over the years, I went from punk rocker in leather jackets to ‘emo’ guy in long black coats and combat boots to other looks too. Some of these looks have stayed cool and others not. But I realized that looking great in my clothes gave me confidence. When you work with a guy to outfit him, you’re not selling clothes. You’re providing confidence in the form of a look that makes him feel the best he can be. Life is too short to not look good. And it’s not about how expensive something is. The best Vintage leather jacket I own cost me $49 and fits like a glove. I get more compliments on that than almost anything else I wear out.
Tumblr media
BH: What brand and model was your first pair of boots:
JH: I bought a pair of black combat boots in my teens at the Army/Navy store. Corcoran Jump boots. I wore them for like 10 years. I wish I still had them… No idea where they went! The first thing I bought when I moved to LA in the 90’s was a legit pair of UK made Doc Martens. I still have those!
BH: Can you describe the feeling you get when you put on a new pair of boots?
JH: I wear boots 99% of the time. I live in them. Partially because I have very wide feet in the toe box and very narrow at the heel. The right boots just make me feel good… confident. Especially if they are well made. I have some boots that I keep pristine and others that I beat to hell and then condition them to lock in the patina. I have a lot of boots!
Tumblr media
BH: What inspired you and your partner to open Proconsul Clothing?
JH: When we met I was at a crossroads in my career. I really wanted to not go back into the corporate world of retail. Nothing wrong with it, but I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I spent years crafting a vision. I knew what I wanted and he made it happen for me. I love the brands that are built to last: Alden shoes, Tricker’s… A leather jacket that you put the miles on and build patina… Who doesn’t love something that will last for decades?
My business partner has many years of production experience in denim, owning a business that makes clothes. He understood the idea of having a store for people who wanted denim, leather jackets, shoes that were built to last. And the rare (like 12 of an Alden shoe made just for us) and special. And he loved the concept of a Men’s custom casual haberdashery where we either alter our clothes to fit you or make it completely custom to your specs. And for the price of going into a nice Men’s store or department store that does not do that.
Once our customers get into our clothes they want to go deep and get every color or fabric in what fits. They want the Alden or Tricker’s MTO boots that only we have because they know the quality and probably collect them, too. We wanted a place that had what we wanted to buy and wear. And a beautiful store that’s not cool for cool’s sake but a place that you actually want to spend time in. We have seating areas, leather club chairs. We want you to come and hang out.
I named it Proconsul because I am a huge Roman History buff. A Proconsul was previously a Consul, the man that co-ruled the Roman Republic before (and technically after to some extent) there were emperors. Then after his year of leading, he was given a province or country to run as if he were a Consul, which is what Proconsul means. This guy was successful in life, well traveled and had access to the best of everything. That’s our customer.
Tumblr media
BH: How did you go about selecting and curating the selection of apparel and footwear that you offer?
JH: At this point in my life, I am obsessed with clothing and footwear that is well-made, special and hard to find. Items that are made by someone I could actually meet. I tell people that when they try on our denim. I could introduce you to our tailors and production team because they are 25 minutes away. Growing up in Massachusetts, I did know about Alden but really got to know them years later. Any brand that is over 100 years old has it down. I want our clothes to feel like we have been doing it for 100 years as well. Classic fits in jeans, jean jackets, shirts and t-shirts. I’m not interested in fashion. For example, why do people keep going back to Steve McQueen as an icon? Because he looks timeless. Many stores reference him because they get that aspect of Men’s clothes. You shop at Proconsul because you get that. That’s what we make and do. I love vintage, especially leather jackets and I think everyone should have at least one of those. But I also love the idea of being the one who puts the miles on yourself and creates future vintage for the guy down the road. Whoever gets my leather jacket collection will be a very happy person!
Tumblr media
BH: What does a heritage brand represent for you?
JH: The best ones have stayed true to the right way of doing things. Made the best possible way and they are value propositions. Yes, I will spend $600-800 on boots because I’ll have them for decades. Or thousands on a leather jacket for the same reason. When I first started, I saved up for those things in order to afford them. And you feel good about it. Again, I think that leads to confidence in every respect.
Tumblr media
BH: You feature American, French and British made goods, what are the common attributes between these brands?
JH: I just keep going back to built to last, well-made goods. When I have a customer who finds his “unicorn” boot that no one else has, I mean you yourself know that feeling. It’s just so good. Special. I wanted either limited representation or no representation in LA for the brands we selected. You either want to or have to come to us.
Tumblr media
BH: What trends do you see in the local Los Angeles market when it comes to menswear?
JH: A lot of street wear. But similar to an Alden special makeup, much of their footwear is collectible. I like that. But theres also a lot that isn’t great. Some stores have a clear understanding of their customer and some don’t. It seems like we are at a crossroads with fast fashion vs. slow, built to last. You know where I stand on that. Where we are on La Brea, we have lots of flavors. That’s good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BH: What’s your opinion of the future of retail, I mean what will change or must change in the face of online and in what ways do you think brick and mortar have an advantage?
JH: It’s a great question. Brick and Mortar is not dead. But only if you give customers a reason to go there. People want experiences. And they want someone who cares, knows their stuff and genuinely wakes up in the morning to deliver the best service possible. If I walk into a store and some employee is on their phone and doesn’t care whether I’m there or not, well I just walk out. In anything important to you I think you want a connection with someone who is an expert, a pro. I love pros, whether they are chefs, bartenders, lawyers, seriously whatever profession where you actually strive to be the best. And products where you know you’re getting something good. Retail has to excel at that.
Tumblr media
We had a trunk show for Bleu de Chauffe. Now they sell online of course. I was so happy to see new customers come specifically because they wanted to touch the bags, to see how they felt on their shoulder. And our job is to build a relationship with them and continue to give them access to the best stuff that they love. All that being said, people are busy and online is quick. I get that. I only buy online when I know exactly what I’m getting into fit or style-wise. And I have the relationship with that brand or store and want to give them the business. That’s my goal for our website. You bought that shoe before and we have another color you like, or it’s time for another jean. I have customers all over the world. They would love to be in the store, but it’s not always possible. So the website gives them access on their schedule. That’s where online works well. But you can’t beat being there if you can. Have amazing product and make it a place that you also want to hang out in and you’ll be in business.

thick paste so concentrated in sugar
I soon chose some of her designs for my and my fabric love affair with Rainbow Vintage Home had started. The first design to catch my eye was Flora Flower Power. It was the kind of late 60s/early 70s design that I adore. Gatsby and Nick strike up a friendship, it is revealed that Gatsby is in love with Nick's cousin Daisy Buchanan and wishes to meet her, which he does and they embark on an affair. However, disaster strikes all parties when Gatsby and Daisy accidentally kill Daisy's husband's mistress which results in her husband murdering Gatsby!.
It evolved out of necessity when there were no canning jars! Real old school apple butter was a thick paste so concentrated in sugar and so diminished in water content, that it would keep without canning or refrigeration. This is the apple butter that has always intrigued me and this project has been on the back burner for a long time, unfortunately, not literally. This year I finally began my journey, to discover, reclaim and record the process of making real apple butter..

TIP! Choose a less popular month to get married if you want to save money. This would be sometime that is not between May and September.
Marriage involves two people joining together for the rest of their lives. But, the wedding can turn into a disaster. This advice will reduce the severity of the planning process.
TIP! You will need to make a choice about how much alcohol you want to pay for, and which type of serving will be most cost efficient. If you have an open bar that is available for long intervals of time, the bill can run up really hard really fast.
If you plan to serve your own food at the wedding, try shopping wholesale at places like Costco. If you’re shopping wholesale, you are able to get a lot of food for less money than shopping retail. Also, ask family or friends to help offset the cost of the food.
TIP! Wedding dresses are notoriously expensive. When you go shopping for your wedding dress, think outside the box and look at dresses that are not typically considered wedding dresses.
Wedding dresses are not cheap. Don’t limit yourself to considering dresses that are marketed specifically as wedding gowns. A Bridesmaid dress can be a good fit, and it doesn’t cost half as much as a wedding dress does. Besides, you can have a dress altered and still likely spend less than you would have on a wedding dress.
TIP! Choosing your favorite gown online can be faster and cheaper, but do so well in advance to allot extra time for alterations. It is perfectly possible to purchase a gown for a few hundred dollars and have it altered for as little as $200.
If the bride has sensitive skin she can find ways to take the stress out of their lives so they don’t end up with facial irritation. Look for a bridal facial treatment that includes skin-soothing and brightening ingredients like rose, sea salts, oatmeal proteins, and creamy scrubs.
TIP! If you’re short on money, consider renting diamonds for your wedding day. This will give you the stunning look that you desire but will not cost you a lot of money, allowing you to stick to your budget.
Even if your gut tells you otherwise, you should never commit to a wedding photographer without considering several other options. You do not want to have someone taking wedding pictures that you are not pleased with. Some excellent ways to narrow your search include talking to friends or checking out websites.
TIP! Brides should a skin care routine that offers a glowing complexion without causing irritation or breakouts. Seek out soothing facial treatments that utilize sea salts, rose hips and oatmeal scrubs.
Don’t rent a reception venue that has little room for dancing. You don’t want to have dancers crashing into seated guests or knocking over the dessert table, so ensure you have adequate space available. If necessary, move some chairs and tables out of the way to make more room.
TIP! You need to provide the DJ at your wedding with some songs you want to hear, but you also need to give him a list of all the songs you do not want to hear on that day. If you hate a specific song or a genre, such as heavy metal or country, you don’t want that played at your wedding reception.
Don’t leave your guests waiting while you, your new spouse and the wedding party have an hour long photo shoot. Pictures of the bride, groom, bridesmaids and groomsmen can be snapped in advance. Also, pictures of the couple with their parents can be taken in advance; this reduces the waiting time for guests coming to the reception.
TIP! When you invite your family to your destination wedding, see if they’d like to stick around for the honeymoon, too! Everyone can save if you stay longer, as you will likely get a great discount from the hotel. This can help them have a memorable day and a great vacation.
“Destination” wedding guests will appreciate a thoughtful gift of vacation items awaiting them in their rooms. Include useful items like sunglasses, a hat, tourist map, pamphlets and a disposable camera. Providing a restaurant guide will fill your guests in on all of the best places to eat in the area.
Wedding Cake
TIP! If you plan to give a speech at a wedding, write out and practice what you will say beforehand. A poorly planned wedding speech can make the audience uncomfortable or bored, and leave you feeling disgruntled and disappointed in yourself.
If you wish to have a wedding cake that stands out and is a focal point in your reception, you may want to consider a matching piece of fabric. Whether you choose patterns or solids, the fabric should add another dimension of visual interest and help to tie your wedding cake in with your wedding theme.
TIP! Flowers that are plentiful in your state may be difficult to find at your wedding location. Consult with experts near your wedding location to see which flowers are seasonal at the time of your wedding over there.
See if you can borrow a special item of apparel from a friend for your wedding ceremony. This jewelery can help you get a great look for your special day!
TIP! If your wedding is held outside, make sure you have another plan for bad weather. You could for instance rent some tents, or choose a venue with a park and a hall.
Plan every wedding detail, from all the events you are having down to the food. By ensuring that your guests are comfortable and enjoying themselves, you are expressing your gratitude for their presence.
TIP! If you are going to travel for your wedding, make sure you understand the local laws. Whether you have to worry about residency, fees, forms, or any other bureaucratic red tape, make sure everything is in place before you start booking your hotel, venue, or services for your big day.
Prior to meeting with a wedding planner, do your research. Take all of your ideas and incorporate them into one place, such as a design book. Anything that is special to you, such as items from magazines, can be used to convey your ideas to the planner.
TIP! Have your wedding’s theme match with all of the decorations. Retro and vintage themes containing bright colors require robust, wistful flowers that give the feeling of nostalgia.
If you are planning an outdoor reception, make sure that your caterer is aware of this. Various foods will need to be judged for their ability to withstand outdoor conditions, such as wind, heat or cold. It might be possible to cover the dishes. Keep a small refrigerator around to cool drinks down.
TIP! Make sure your bridesmaids know what they are wearing. Disagreements in bridesmaid’s gowns can ruin a friendship.
Carry all your wedding’s aesthetics to every element of the decor, including the flowers. A retro feel requires bright, stunning flowers that speak to days gone by. These may include peonies in yellow or pink, bright daisies, and red poppies.
Potted Plants
TIP! You might want to think about serving a smaller dinner for your reception. Having a large amount of guests can really drive up the cost of the food.
If you want to avoid allergies or the expense of floral arrangements, consider using potted plants to decorate your wedding space. You can embellish terracotta pots with colorful ribbons, paint or decoupage, or you may choose glazed stoneware. Once the wedding is over, it is possible for guests to take home the potted plants as a memento of the wedding, or the newlyweds may want to plant them around their new home.
TIP! Always be aware of Mother nature and how she can cause the most unexpected weather related problems. If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, you need to have a Plan B in case the weather turns bad.
Hire a photographer that will help make your wedding a memorable one and not just a pile of pictures. When you are interviewing your photographer, ask questions about how they see the day going. Ask them about their ideal process and flow throughout your wedding day. You need to be sure that their work style is compatible with your needs.
TIP! Ask vendors you’re already using to recommend other services you need. Photographers have another ability that you can take advantage of.
When planning out your wedding music, you definitely want to look into the different DJ’s or bands in the area. Ask for a list of references and call those references before booking the band or DJ. When drawing up a contract, make sure that the date, the hours you expect to have them working, the pay and any other variables are all accounted for. This is important, as you want the music for your wedding to be perfect.
TIP! A very nice gift for your bridal party is a customized piece of jewelry that connects you to your girls. This way, after a wedding is over, every girl is going to have a memento to remember this special day.
Now that you are ready for marriage, this article is a blessing. Your wedding should be magical and memorable, and that is possible if you follow this advice. The information from this article will help you plan for your special day.

Why is the jobless rate for people with disabilities roughly three times the national average? Employment discrimination plays a role, but so might clothing. A recent study from researchers at the University of Missouri found that the dearth of adaptive clothing in the mass retail market poses workforce barriers for this already marginalized group.
While Target and Tommy Hilfiger sell adaptive clothing, most major retailers don’t. Adaptive clothing might feature snaps instead of buttons or accommodate someone who’s had a limb amputated or uses a wheelchair. The problem is that the limited amount of such clothing that’s actually available from mass retailers tends to be casual. So what’s a person with a disability seeking a job in the corporate workforce to do?
All too often, the struggle to find business attire leads people with disabilities not to pursue certain careers or to skip applying to jobs they’re qualified for, according to Kerri McBee-Black, an instructor in the University of Missouri’s textile and apparel management department. She and Jung Ha-Brookshire, director of graduate studies in the textile and apparel management department, analyzed the professional experiences of 12 people living with disabilities.
Although that’s admittedly a small sample size, the researchers note that they identified similarities among the study participants. Half had physical conditions, such as muscular dystrophy or multiple sclerosis, while the rest had psychological conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. The need for adaptive clothing is typically associated with people who have physical disabilities, but some individuals with psychological disabilities have unique apparel needs too.
Racked spoke with McBee-Black about how clothing keeps people with disabilities out of the corporate workplace. She also discussed how employers can be more inclusive and why retailers need to start recognizing that people with disabilities exist.
Are there any retailers that cater to people with disabilities in the corporate world?
Many mainstream apparel brands don’t believe this is a big enough population, that there isn’t a big enough market. But if you look at the population, we’re all going to be disabled at some point, at least temporarily, and some permanently. It’s not going away, especially with the baby boomer generation increasing in age.
With the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements and general movement toward inclusivity, maybe now is ... the right environment for the apparel industry to be more inclusive. I don’t want to be completely skeptical, but at the very least, it’s a way for them to make money and be socially responsible, which millennials and Generation Z like. They want their brands to be socially responsible. They want their brands to do good things.
You’ve said outerwear can be difficult to find for people in wheelchairs. How does that affect them in the workplace?
Coats aren’t easy to find for people who use wheelchairs. One person [using a wheelchair] did advocacy work. He would lobby policymakers and go down to City Hall, and he was required to look the part. He was paralyzed, and people who’ve been paralyzed are not able to regulate their body temperature like everyone else. But finding coats is difficult for people using wheelchairs, so a lot of them will wrap themselves up in blankets, which doesn’t look professional. He felt uncomfortable, stigmatized for not being able to wear a coat appropriately.
Your study included people with psychological disabilities as well. What challenges did they have?
The challenges of people living with psychological disabilities were particularly insightful for me. There was this one particular person [with ADHD, anxiety, and depression] who got into a grad school and started to experience stigma from her colleagues and adviser while working on her PhD. She had a very eclectic fashion sense — graphic tees, crazy colors and prints together, vintage. Until then, she never felt the need not to wear that sort of clothing, but she started to dress super conservatively and didn’t feel like she was being herself. In order for her to adapt and be successful, that’s what she felt like she had to do not to draw any attention to herself. In the interview, she told me, “I didn’t want them to think any differently than they already did about me.”
Workplace dress codes can be so restrictive that they lead some people with disabilities not to pursue certain career fields. Can you discuss that?
One particular young woman who used a wheelchair and has a college degree and experience in the banking industry did not feel comfortable applying for a job in the bank when she graduated. She said, “I knew they had a specific dress code and that dress code would make it hard to use the restroom without assistance from others.” She was independent in every other aspect of her life but that, so she never once considered applying for a job at the bank.
Another person with a disability wanted to be a sports broadcaster, but his adviser told him, “Nobody’s going to hire you.” Granted this was back in the ’80s, a different time, but it really impacted him. He’s now a disability advocate and said, “I enjoy my job, but this was not my dream.”
What can workplaces do to be more accommodating of people with disabilities?
Most industries can be more accommodating and need to understand how dress codes impact their ability to access qualified and phenomenal employees. Twenty years ago, companies started to have casual Fridays. Now we need to have companies come up with some innovative ways to be more inviting [to people with disabilities]. There’s evidence that it can be done if the industry is willing to be innovative and to be inclusive.
People living with disabilities are highly underemployed. They have such low income. They’re not being hired, and my little piece of the research showcases how clothing is a barrier.
Wouldn’t it constitute discrimination if a person with a disability applied for a job but was barred from accepting it because of the dress code?
You can’t fire them because they use a wheelchair, but the dress code issue across the board is nearly impossible to prove unless the discrimination is blatant, unless they say, “We will not hire you unless you wear this suit.” That’s why most people with disabilities self-select jobs. They’ll say, “There’s no way I’m going to work there because the dress code is too restrictive.”
Are there any success stories? Any people with disabilities you encountered who are making it work, even as they’re faced with these barriers?
All of them [the study participants] are working, but they still feel like they have barriers. Some of them just stick with a particular brand. For example, one discovered a certain company makes pants that work for him — he could easily get them on and off — so he bought them in every color and every style. Others will have things tailored and customized. One uses a wheelchair and has had several custom-made suits.
Think about that. You’re already buying clothes, and then you have to pay someone to adapt them on top of that. If you’re a poor person, you’re just stuck with whatever you can get off the rack. It’s just a vicious circle.

My gaff was used rarely. As I recall, it was used for the biggest channel catfish I ever caught through the ice, a fish more than 18 pounds (on 4-pound test line, by the way). Even then, {body=[], title=Fishing Tails, url=http://www.fishingtails.info/} after getting the gaff in that fish, my uncle still had to take off his coat, roll up his sleeves, stick his arm in the water and turn the catfishs head so we could get it through the hole. Most of the time, my old gaff was used as a reference to show the size of a fish. More often, it was used to reach down ice holes and extract aquatic vegetation that snagged my bait. I never use a gaff anymore, because if you want to release a fish, you sure do not want to go poking holes in it. Yes, a gaff can make it easier to get a big fish through an ice hole. Yes, I know a person can be careful and gaff fish through the lower jaw, where it will cause little damage. Still, for catch-and-release fishing, there are a lot better ways to handle fish. Big fish can be landed through ice holes without a gaff. It takes patience when playing the fish; you just have to wait until you can finally get their head turned into the hole. Once you get their head in the hole, the rest of the fish has to follow. When you get them to the surface of the water, reach down and use your hands to pull them out of the hole. Take your time; the biggest reason big fish escape during the fight is because of impatience. I rarely see anyone using gaffs in Nebraska. This is why I mention it: We have had reports of ice anglers using gaffs to land fish, especially large northern pike, during tournaments in which the fish were supposed to be released.

Serra, a Store for the Cannabis Cannaseur
Now that more than half the states in the US have legalized marijuana in some form (whether it’d be for medical or recreational use), there is no shortage of stores and e-shops selling modern pot paraphernalia for the high-end cannaseur. (We even rounded up a few of our favorites here.) Serra is such a store. Unlike your local head shop filled psychedelic alien wares and Alice In Wonderland-themed merchandise, this Portland-based shop is a high-end cannabis dispensary that prides itself on providing beautiful, minimalistic pipes and accessories.
Below, I got the chance to chat with Serra’s Brand Development Director Cambria Benson Noecker about “smokable art” and some of the challenges with opening a luxury store for the cannabis market.
Why did you pick this city/neighborhood/storefront?
For Serra’s flagship location we restored an 1889 storefront in Portland’s Historic Old Town District. The striking space and proximity to Portland’s cultural center were two of the main draws. As one of the many native Portlander’s on our team, we were thrilled to be able to contribute to a resurgent district with Historical significance.
Where did you get the name for the store?
Serra, is Italian for greenhouse. We intentionally strayed from the literal use of green in both our naming and branding and worked with the creative minds at OMFG CO in creating both the name and brand.
Has it changed much since it opened? How?
We opened our doors in July of 2007 and are lucky to have worked closely with our environmental designers, interior designer and our in-house compliance officer to anticipate legal requirements and were able to incorporate most obstacles organically into our retail design. That being said, we are continually working on upgrading and refreshing our space. Next up is a custom built hand-rolled joint station that will be an amazing addition to our flagship store.
What’s one of the challenges you have with the business?
The legal state of marijuana throughout our design, build and launch has definitely been the biggest obstacle we’ve been faced with. When starting our design-process having an open, light-filled, welcoming space was a huge priority for us but at that stage we had to have our storefront obscured from public view. We gambled on the hope that this law was changing and incorporated a green house glass and steel wall with privacy film into our design so we could still get the desired feel. In October when the laws changed we joyfully pulled down the film!
What’s your favorite item in the store right now?
Our Serra-exclusive Summerland bong. Summerland Ceramics, a line of gorgeous white ceramic smokeable art pieces that were one the first product lines we approached when selecting our assortment. We were lucky to be the first brick-and-mortar to carry the artist’s pieces and worked with him to develop a special edition piece that incorporated our signature shade of Yves Klein Blue.
What is this season’s theme?
Smoking as a lifestyle. From the flower we selected, to our edibles to pipes, everything was carefully curated to empower smoking to be incorporated into normalcy.
Are you carrying any new products and/or undiscovered gems you’re particularly excited about?
We just launched our first edible line with Woodblock Chocolate, Portland’s first bean-to-bar chocolate manufactory, and have created a seed-to-weed to bean-to-bar infused dark chocolate and milk chocolate bars.
What’s been a consistent best seller?
Flower is our constant best seller and we designed our store to have that product be in the heart of it with our u-shape flower counter. Customers can explore the counter with our docents in their journey to find the perfect strain through our feelings-based approach. Our mantra and motto is “Feel all the Feelings” we assign our strains feelings (happiness, relaxation, creativity, energy, relief and focus) and our flower is coded around the counter with iconography to help them get matched with flower that will help them achieve the feeling they are looking to achieve.
Does the store have its own line?
We have exclusive collaborations with a grower: Pruf Cultivar, a chocolatier: Woodblock Chocolate and many artists with cannabis accessories, such as our exclusive Serra x Summerland bong. Right now under our own product line we have apparel and rolling papers, but we are actively looking to expand our offerings.
Any special events/exhibits/pop ups/collaborations coming up?
We are honored to be participating in Portland Design week and are doing a special two-day open house with a special art-installation. Details are under wraps for now, so stay tuned! We also have an under-wraps collaboration on the edible/drinkable side of the business slated for release on 4/20.
Do you have anything from the store in your own home?
Our home has become a shrine to the gorgeous “smokable art” we carry in our store. I always joke that most items on display on our shelves can either be smoked or store weed. One of my current favorites in the Cannador we carry, think a gorgeous cigar-box for weed. My other favorite is my weed cart, I’ve taken my vintage bar cart and turned it into a treasure-trove of smoking goodies I like to bring out when we have guests.
What’s next for you and your store?
We are expanding into e-commerce! We have an amazing selection of cannabis-lifestyle items, from pipes to bongs, to handmade joint-rolling machines and joint jewelry, we are beyond excited to start offering the items for sale on-line to our out-of-state shoppers.
What’s one lesson you’ve learned since opening your store?
Always be flexible but confident in your choices. We had a lot of obstacles due to the changing legal landscape in Oregon and flexibility was essential in bringing the project to fruition. The other thing I really learned was to have confidence in your voice and design decisions, from the beginning we were told again and again that our store was too-fancy and not right for the cannabis market. We stayed confident in our belief that this was the direction the market needed to evolve to and couldn’t be happier with the path we are set out on.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone who wants to follow a similar path to yours, what would it be?
Right now the cannabis world is one of the most exciting and challenging industries to be a part of. Do whatever you can to be a part of the wild-west of the industry, but never cut-corners in achieving your goal. The hard work pays of personally and for the collective industry.
To visit Serra, stop by 220 SW 1st Avenue, Portland, OR 97204.
