CAPODANNO AL FIVE SPOT

Capodanno 1959, seduto in prima fila, proprio sotto il contrabbasso di Mingus c’era Orson Welles, quasi un alter ego del jazzista, per genialità, esuberanza, fierezza, complessità. E anche per le tante disavventure artistiche. Per Mingus era un idolo, lo seguiva dai tempi radiofonici di The war of worlds, adorava Quarto potere (dove in una scena c'era il suo amico d'infanzia Buddy Collette che suonava il sax in una festa sulla spiaggia), ammirava il suo modo di vestire, il suo impegno politico (sempre in prima linea per la difesa dei diritti civili, il suo Macbeth tutto nero è del 1936), la sua voce (“mi ricorda Coleman Hawkins. Potevi sentirla a un miglio di distanza”). E non era il solo jazzista a essere stato sedotto dalla voce radiofonica di Orson Welles, anche Miles Davis lo citava come un’influenza sul suo modo di suonare: “Fraseggio, tono, intonazione: tutte queste cose possono avere come modello un maestro della parola”.

Il 1959 sarà un anno d’oro del jazz per quantità, qualità, creatività. Al Five spot, piccolo, fumoso, maleodorante locale di Bowery, scelto come luogo di riferimento da artisti e intellettuali, l'anno comincia con un formidabile double bill: sono di scena, uno dopo l’altro, Sonny Rollins, alla testa di un trio con il bassista Henry Grimes e con il batterista Pete La Rocca, e Charles Mingus con il pianista Horace Parlan, il batterista Roy Haynes (che sostituisce il fedelissimo Dannie Richmond arrestato) e i sassofonisti Booker Ervin e John Handy. È la prima sera dell’anno, ma nel club di Bowery dei fratelli Joe e Iggy Termini è anche l’ultimo impegno di quel prestigioso, favoloso cartellone con Mingus molto irrequieto per tutta la scrittura. Aveva appena registrato la musica per il film di John Cassavetes Shadows, una colonna sonora bocciata nel rimontaggio finale (la stessa cosa sarebbe successa anni dopo con Todo modo di Petri), aveva ripreso i suoi musicisti brutalmente e una volta aveva minacciato violentemente i clienti di un tavolo che, durante il suo set, non smettevano di parlare. Oltretutto ogni sera tendeva ad allargare il suo set e Sonny si inferociva, talvolta rifiutandosi di suonare. Ma era un gran clima, entusiasmante e effervescente. Rollins era in un momento di transizione, alla vigilia di un ritiro clamoroso per rinnovare il linguaggio del suo sax tenore con il leggendario e solitario corso di aggiornamento stilistico sul ponte di Williamsburg: «In un posto tranquillissimo, un angolo morto che oggi sarebbe impossibile ritrovare con il traffico che c’è» il suo racconto, dove poteva esercitarsi liberamente.

Anche Welles, come Mingus, era reduce da una delusione cinematografica: la Universal gli aveva tolto di mano la post-produzione del nuovo film, L’infernale Quinlan, ne aveva tagliato una ventina di minuti e aveva fatto girare nuove scene, modificando il primo montaggio. Più o meno nello stesso periodo era finito in soffitta un documentario intitolato Viva Italia (Portrait of Gina) perché Gina Lollobrigida aveva messo un veto, non gradendo il suo ritratto di giovane attrice ambiziosa e la Abc tv lo aveva bocciato ritenendolo cosi poco ortodosso da non poter essere trasmesso. Era un film di mezz’ora scarsa sull’Italia, paese che Orson ha frequentato per 20 anni (la terza moglie è stata l’attrice italiana, Paola Mori). Dopo un lungo oblio (Orson aveva perduto l'unica copia esistente all'Hotel Ritz di Parigi) è stato riscoperto nel 1986, proiettato al festival di Venezia ma poi di nuovo bandito su intervento della Lollobrigida.

La presenza del regista di Quarto potere al Five spot non era casuale

Nel club di Bowery si poteva incontrare chiunque, da Jack Kerouac che leggeva le sue poesie, alla mitica baronessa Pannonica de Koenigswater scesa dalla sua Rolls Royce, a William de Kooning che voleva respirare la libertà del jazz, a Leonard Bernstein che si divertiva a curiosare nella notte, allo scrittore Norman Mailer con la sua passione per quella musica. Ma la musica da sempre è stata una grande passione di Welles. La mamma pianista gli aveva fatto prendere lezioni di piano e violino e Orson aveva anche mostrato un certo talento, tanto da essere considerato un ragazzo prodigio. In gioventù era stato un grande sostenitore del jazz di New Orleans, ma sicuramente ammirava Charles Mingus per la sua musica e la sua personalità, il suo impegno, il suo agire tellurico.

Hi Carot!

Finally binge played the whole main game and side games (except for T2A2G, which was the first game I played)

I think I had a different emotional journey in OW than most players; I was interested in Orlam from the beginning.

I’m aromantic and don’t enjoy the situation where a love interest already has a hardcore crush on the protagonist (though I could sympathize with Iggy’s struggle about how blurry the line between romantic intimacy and sexual one is for allo/allo people), so a character who’s not involved in the love triangle somehow being a love interest seems interesting for me.

I’m not sure that you were expecting people to find out what exactly happened between Genzo and Orlam (something romantically or/and sexually intimate) before Arc 3, but I could tell there was something more than just a bully and his victim going on between them.

For example, in the BBQ scene where Orlam tried to hint at Genzo's sexuality and the conversation from the first Orlam’s revenge, the combination of dirty jokes and the mention of "after-prom" were so obvious.

I was fully convinced that Genzo didn't just bully Orlam awfully but also broke his heart when fake guilt-tripping Genzo in Kiddie Kruise mentioned that Orlam helped him after the loss of his sight. Why would a victim help a powerless bully? Orlam’s body sitting on a bed instead of lying is a dead giveaway (pun intended).

After the disappearance of Genzo in Arc 3, I thought Iggy would find out Orlam turned out to be a monster and was going to cry, so the choices caught me off guard. Choosing a man whose heart was broken by your friend over the forementioned friend who has a crush on you? SIGN ME UP ALREADY. (Don’t get me wrong, I like Genzou, but I'm here for THE INTENSE GAY DRAMA) (I’m also here for THE COMPLICATED TRIC TRANSMASC DRAMA) (but they once caught my eye PHYSICALLY and tried to pop it out MY EYEBALLS WANT TO STAY IN THEIR SOCKETS COMFY HELLO???????)

The emotional roller coaster ride of the end of Arc 3 was WILD, and his relationship with Iggy was also a good surprise, so when I reached Arc 5.15, seeing he's suffering from something I would never experience was really painful.

Whe I played Save the Last Dance, I figured out the way to get End 2 out by the hint (the player should gain points) and Orlam’s personality; he loves being in a dominant position and fears betrayal.

The game makes you trick him to get the wrong hope that Genzo will choose him over Iggy and stab him in the back (figurative language) (technically he stabbed him in the front this time). That's exactly what he did to him on the after-prom.

Now we know Arc 2 Genzo was not a ordinary person who was traumatized by the experience of killing someone he knew from his childhood; he killed someone who's happy in his last second of life because the man who once broke his heart cried for him.

Their fucked up relationship is one of my favorite parts of the game, and I'm also happy for the sidegame version of Orlam, who is no longer suffering from his feelings (we could see he's still bitter about Genzo, but as long as they're not trying to kill each other literally, I’ll take that as a win).

BINGED, MY GOD that must have taken so long I feel hghgjgy even aside from the long main game playing all the side games would take a while too 🤣💦 I am both impressed and honored that you'd play through everything like that LOL

and I'm very happy you like Orlam!! Orlam is such an interesting character for me personally just from a reception point of view as he's gone from a char no one seemed to like to the most popular char of the entire game... (and often with such intensity that I feel a tad overwhelmed at times jjgjfhg 💦). but I do find his story in general to also be one of the most interesting and he's easily the one I've always had the most fun writing and his scenes are always some of my favorites LOL there's a reason I spent so freaking long making sure the climax of his character arc, so to speak, in 5.15 was the best i could absolutely do 🥺

I don't really talk about the whole Genzou and Orlam thing outside of the game itself much. for one, because it's one of the many things I kinda would rather leave open to interpretation and for people to take away whatever they want from it (similar to some of the other stuff i don't go into detail much, such as some specific moments of all of their pasts, some of the chars' reasons for doing things, etc). and for another, because I don't really wanna romanticize it at all (and honestly feel uncomfortable if I see ppl doing so) so I mostly just avoid it in general jghgjgh to me they are awful for each other in every way, which is why I love how tragic and awful the whole thing is, but I don't like pushing it more than that LOL I do enjoy their dynamic in the AU-ish side games though as in those games I tend to head canon most of the Most Awful things as not having happened so they're not as toxic but they still clash horrendously which just makes for funny banter

I'm very happy you enjoy their tragedy and drama though dhdhdh sob this whole game is just pure convoluted drama laced with a bit of horrible death and a few bad jokes I swear 🤣💦 and tbh it grew more convoluted as production went on because both arcs 3 and 4 turned out a lot different from how I'd planned (4 especially). I still think 4 might be my favorite of all the arcs just because of how serendipitously I feel it all came together and also how much it broke my heart... though arc 5 once it's fully finished might take its place just because I love how it brings all the chars' arcs to their heights (and also I think the production value is the best LOL). Arc 3 though was where the game finally started to get a bit of traction (and also took such a huge turn) so I've always been fond of it, too

I feel like I might have gotten off track with this answer though that might be due to the aforementioned bit about me generally avoiding talking about those two too much so I instinctively veered LOL but I really am glad that you've enjoyed the game and its chars and all its tragic horrible drama so much!! 😭💦 And also thank you for taking the time to write out such a long and thoughtful message!! 💕

Is that allo gendie insane? You didn't employ any racist tactics or whatever, you're literally pointing out that black women are forced to play a very specific and demeaning role in the music industry despite being multitalented people with potential. Like it is SO obvious that most American black women who reach a certain level in the celebrity industries are not treated well at all, or allowed to be the full spectrum of themselves. Oh my gosh LAKDSJFL This is such a delightful little message, thank you anon 💕 I don't wanna really ever confirm or deny head canons in any way??? Mostly because I feel like they're all legit and valid, so I never want to confirm one thing that might make someone else's head canon no longer work, etc. LOL And it's also why there will always be some things I do keep open to interpretation in the story itself as even though these are all set chars in my mind and there are some things that are simply Canon (e.g., Iggy being ace, etc.), I still do want people to be able to enjoy them and relate to them in however they want to because they're all so complex I could never possibly think of the many different ways people might interpret them or see themselves in them or relate to them.

Il y a des mouvements citoyens de rue qui la remette au centre de l'actualité avec plus ou moins d’écoutes et de réussites, il faut veiller que cela englobe d’autres causes. Et les performances politiques de personnes comme Déborah de Robertis, Pussy Riot, Femen, ou Megumi Igarashi ou Act Up, à l’époque notamment nous touchent et validons leurs actions

Quels sont pour vous les tabous à dénoncer ?

Nous devons dénoncer la norme ! Nous sommes toutes et tous différents, A notre petit niveau nous pouvons juste mettre la lumière sur ses points qui nous bloquent et modifier leurs états de conscience

Quels sont vos moyens d’actions?

Nous agissons avec nos fonds propres avec beaucoup d'huile de coude. Nos idées se concrétisent tout d'abord par un visuel de base commun à toutes nos perfs et nous utilisons l'image, la musique, le texte et le geste vers le public qu’on associe toujours à nos performances

a. Quanti anni senti di avere? 45-50.

b. Per quale personaggio letterario o cinematografico potresti sviluppare un sentimento platonico, fatto di corteggiamenti e sogni, di timidi avvicinamenti, senza alcun contatto? Guarda al massimo posso fare lo sturm un drang segreto con la consapevolezza che una storia vera è impossibile, il sentimento platonico fiorellinoso no.

c. Qual è quella particolare cosa su cui continui a mentire a te stesso, quella bugia che ti racconti per superare l’occasionale brivido d’imbarazzo lungo la schiena? “La prima impressione non conta niente, è presto superata dai fatti”.

d. Qual è la fantasia erotica che ti fa pensare il peggio di te stesso? Non sono capace di vergognarmi con me stessa dei miei desideri e ho fantasie erotiche molto comuni, banali e poco dettagliate.

e. Cosa ti dici di notte, al buio, per addormentarti quando non ci riesci? “Zitto cervello, le cose che pensi di notte sono cazzate paranoiche” seguito da recitazione di cose ripetitive a memoria/contare i respiri.

f. Dove si trova adesso la prima persona di cui ti sei mai stato/a innamorato/a? A lavorare in qualche miniera, l'ultima volta che ne ho avuto notizie.

g. Hai un’opinione politica o morale controversa, che ti vergogni di condividere? Quale? Ho opinioni relativamente controverse sull'eugenetica e sul perché sia giusto poter decidere di abortire.

h. Quanti anni avevi quando hai capito per la prima volta di non essere poi così speciale? Mai pensato di essere speciale, tranne forse per un breve periodo durante la prima adolescenza mentre il resto del mondo mi gridava ANORMALE ANORMALE ANORMALE. Al massimo penso di essere un po' insolita su certi aspetti.

i. Dove si trova e cosa fa adesso quella persona che sarebbe forse potuta diventare la tua migliore amica, o la tua compagna, se solo non vi foste separati? Questa persona non esiste.

l. Qual è stato il tuo primo fallimento rilevante? Ho preso un 5 a matematica e ho cambiato totalmente metodo di studio. Considero un fallimento importante anche non essermi laureata in tempo, più che altro perché dice qualcosa su quali siano le mie difficoltà. Come fallimento morale, direi che avrei potuto sicuramente essere una sorella migliore e una persona meno difficile nei rapporti umani.

m. Qual è stata la tua prima bugia importante? Non mi viene in mente niente, o mento solo su cazzate o ho una coscienza debole.

n. Quanti anni avevi quando hai pensato per la prima volta al suicidio? Pensato in linea teorica credo fin da bambina, come cosa presa in considerazione per me verso i 23 anni.

o. Qual è quella cosa che fai finta ti piaccia, perché la cosa ti fa sentire una persona migliore, ma in realtà ti annoia? Nessuna, al massimo ci sono cose che tento e ritento di apprezzare nella speranza di beccare il momento giusto.

p. Qual è stata l’ultima buona azione che hai deliberatamente evitato di compiere? Dare soldi a qualcuno per strada, rifiutare di andare a concerti/eventi vari di amici e parenti che ci tenevano perché avevo troppo da fare e/o mi sarei stancata troppo.

q. Quante persone puoi davvero chiamare tuoi amici? Un paio ma non so se loro si sentano allo stesso modo nei miei confronti. Non sono brava nell'amicizia.

r. A quale libro, film o canzone associ il ricordo più doloroso? Non ho ricordi veramente dolorosi, diciamo che il dance-pop dei primi anni duemila mi ricorda l'infelicità dell'adolescenza.

s. Un quadro, un film o un libro celebre che non sopporti. Quadri: il cubismo in generale mi fa schifo, potrà dire tutto quel che volete come significato ma il mio occhio ne soffre. Film: Fellini mi annoia e penso sia invecchiato malissimo. Libri: Sulla strada di Kerouac, storia di pseudobarboni superficiali sessisti americani.

t. Una canzone universalmente riconosciuta come stupida e insignificante che adori. Uh c'è l'imbarazzo della scelta. Pensa che mi piace quasi tutto di Lady Gaga, Die Young di Kesha e quasi l'opera omnia di Madonna e ultimamente Mo Bounce di Iggy Azalea. Il mio cuore è tamarro.

u. Un film molto famoso al quale associ un pensiero che credi soltanto tuo. Non credo ci siano pensieri veramente solo miei, comunque in modo molto prevedibile e scontato mi sento sempre affine ai procedural con pipponi morali, tipo Il dodicesimo giurato. Inoltre adoro il momento di Amadeus di Milosz Forman quando Mozart dice sdegnosamente “Io devo, però non voglio” che è circa la storia della mia vita.

v. Quanti momenti davvero significativi credi di aver vissuto nella tua vita? Tre o quattro, ma sono stati cambiamenti di impostazione mentale improvvisi più che eventi esteriori.

z. A che età vorresti morire, e come? Preferirei non morire troppo vecchia, perché i parenti che ho visto morire molto anziani non sono stati un bello spettacolo e vorrei non perdere la dignità in quel modo. Idealmente di morte improvvisa o se avessi i mezzi/riuscissi a trovare il coraggio anche eutanasia.
