On Monday Helsingin Sanomat ran an article on rampant racism in Finnish TikTok comments.

Asmaa Abdi, the 27-year-old daughter of Somalian refugees born and raised in Finland, told HS that she was no longer going to restrict or censor comments on her TikTok account.

"I've been wondering why I should hide the fact that there are a lot of racists here who openly think this way," Abdi said.

Abdi's account touches on aspects of racism in Finnish society and she noticed hate speech ramping up in the lead up to the parliamentary elections last year. Her comments on candidates' discriminatory campaigns released a flood of anonymous trolls hiding behind nicknames.

TikTok's content moderation is automated, meaning no human is involved in deciding what is or isn't appropriate for the social media platform.

Comments can be flagged and reported, but new accounts can always be created if one is banned.

In April, a comment on one of Abdi's posts told her to "kill yourself". She responded with another video citing the comment, which was quickly taken down by TikTok. None of the racist or vitriolic comments against her were taken down though.

A representative from TikTok was unable to answer HS' inquiry into why the platform cannot tackle racist and violent comments.

Private education strike

Tabloid Iltalehti covered a new batch of strike warnings, this time targeting Finland's private education sector from 13 May to 16 May.

The Trade Union of Education in Finland (OAJ), the Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors (JHL) and the Federation of Public and Private Sector Employees (Jyty) announced the strike plans on Sunday.

Iltalehti reported that previous negotiations have failed between employee and employer organisations to reach a new collective agreement.

The strike aims to speed up negotiations on a new collective agreement covering working conditions in the private education sector.

A strike last week in the sector affected around 19,000 children and young people, according to the employer organisation, the Finnish Education Employers (FEE).

Schools that fall under the umbrella of the strike include the International School of Helsinki, the English School and the Helsinki German School.

Third time's the charm

Tampere ice hockey club Tappara won their 20th men's Finnish championship and third Liiga title in a row on Sunday night. Local newspaper Aamulehti was all over the action on the latest instalment in Tappara's trilogy of successive wins.

Aamulehti photographers covered every angle of the action in the Sunday night matchup between Tappara and the Lahti Pelicans.

Lahti had previously won one game in the finals against Tampere, but fell flat in the series clinching game, losing 3-0 against Tampere on their home ice at Nokia Arena.

Aamulehti's coverage wasn't just confined to Nokia Arena though, with photographers capturing the action outside the landmark stadium and at a local pub on Sunday night.

The newspaper was also there to cover the surest sign of any ice hockey win in Finland, locals bathing in a public fountain.

Festival Mancing Mahakan, Perkenalkan Destinasi Wisata Pancing di Delta Mahakam

SAMARINDA- Sebanyak 17 peserta ikut dalam Festival Mancing Mahakam di Desa Muara Pantuan Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara. Festival mancing yang baru pertama kali diadakan ini merupakan bagian dari program peningkatan kesejahteraan nelayan tangkap dalam membangun destinasi wisata pancing di daerah ini, Kegiatan ini merupakan bagian program Nelayanku Hebat garapan PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) dalam meningkatkan kesejahteraan melayan di Muara Pantuan sejak tahun 2018 lalu. Lokasi mancing berada di dua titik lokasi apartemen ikan yang dibuat dari besi oleh nelayan. Apartemen ikan ini menggantikan rumpon yang biasa dibuat dari kayu mangrove yang rentan merusak lingkungan. Festival yang dimulai sejak pukul 07.00 hingga 13.00 Wita berhasil menangkap sebanyak 229 ekor dengan total berat 59,8 kilogram. Tampil sebagai juara 1 Rusdi dari Komunitas Samarinda Fishing Club dengan junlah tangkapan sebanyak 24 ekor , sedangkan Juara 2 diraih Julfi dari youtuber JHL Fishing dengan jumlah tangkapan 22 ekor. “Pemerintah akan mendorong program peningkatan ekonomi masyarakat  demi terwujudnya kesejahteraan masyarakat Kukar,” kata Kepala Dinas Kelautan dan Perikanan Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara Muslik di Desa Muara Pantuan, Minggu (4/9/2022). Muslik mengatakan, pemerintah menyambut positif upaya PT. Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) dalam peningkatan kesejahteraan nelayan demi keberlangsungan usaha nelayan diwilayah kerja PHM. Adanya kolaborasi yang dilakukan pemerintah dengan pihak swasta serta rekan akademisi dalam pembinaan nelayan diharapkan masyarakat  tidak hanya meningkatkan pendapatan dari hasil tangkap nelayan saja, namun juga dapat mengundang pengunjung melalui destinasi wisata pancing. Ditemui dalam kegiatan yang sama, Camat Anggana Rendra Abadi menyampaikan persiapan destinasi wisata pancing telah mendapat dukungan baik pemerintah maupun swasta. Alat kelengkapan pancing, kapal, dan penginapan telah tersedia. Rendra mengatakan, Desa Muara Pantuan perlu dukungan untuk mengembangkan destinasi ini. Dikatakannya, di desa ini listrik belum menyala 24 jam. “Padahal listrik merupakan kebutuhan mendasar  dalam memproduksi es batu. Es batu dangat penting untuk menjaga kesegaran ikan hasil tangkapan,” kata Rendra. Rendra juga mengatakan, kebutuhan air bersih juga masih sangat sulit didapatkan. Pada tahun 2022 pemerintah telah memberikan bantuan penampungan air dengan anggaran Rp 27 miliar sebagai upaya pemenuhan air bersih masyarakat Desa Muara Pantuan dengan penduduk kurang lebih 3 ribu KK. Although there are multiple fine dining restaurants in Miami and Miami Beach, there are not that many waterfront alternatives to choose from. River Yacht Club and Dashi provide a unique dining experience at a waterfront venue located in the heart of the historic Miami River District that includes two fine dining establishments, a beautiful outdoor garden and lounge, and a marina. RYC is a lifestyle destination that brings together gastronomy, live entertainment, maritime activities and art in an urban environment where you can enjoy delicious waterfront dining accompanied by craft cocktails and beautiful yachts going by on the Miami River. If you enjoy brunch, RYC has also made its mark in Miami's culinary scene with its very popular Sunday Brunch party "Rock My Boat Sundays" featuring some of Miami's favorite DJs and a nice selection of mouth-watering dishes.

RYC has built a loyal following based on its dedication to simple clean flavors and good technique. RYC's seafood-centric fare is comprised of crudos, tiraditos, and simply grilled fresh seafood, proteins and fresh vegetables. Upon arrival for my Miami Spice dinner with my friend Zach Roof, we were promptly escorted to a very nice waterfront table. I decided to whet my appetite with the El Capitan craft cocktail with Zacapa Rum, guava, fresh basil, a squeeze of lemon, and topped with Champagne. For my appetizer, I enjoyed the Salmon Crudo with orange dressing, horseradish cream and seaweed. I also sampled Zach's very flavorful Kalua Pork Belly with pineapple, radish salad and micro herbs. My entrée was the Skirt Steak with caramelized shallots, mashed potatoes and shisitto peppers. Zach chose the Pan-Seared Snapper with black lentils, tomato-onion relish, and plantain chips. For dessert we had a lovely selection from RYC's pastry chef, which I complemented with the New Waterfront cocktail with Don Julio tequila, passion fruit nectar, jalapeño, cilantro, fresh lime and sumac spiced rim. 

I also enjoyed the Miami Spice dinner at Dashi, the latest addition to RYC. Dashi operates as a stand-alone restaurant within RYC. Chef Shuji Hiyakawa, a protégé of Iron Chef Masahuru Morimoto and a descendant of three generations of Udon makers, oversees Dashi's culinary operations. Dashi is the perfect complement to RYC's stunning waterfront setting and provides diners with an innovative menu very much in harmony with RYC's seafood-centric menu of crudos, tiraditos, and simply grilled seafood, proteins and fresh vegetables. I chose the Cha-Soba Salad as my appetizer. My entrée was a masterfully prepared Seafood Udon, which I followed with a Green Tea Ice Cream for dessert. I also enjoyed an American Samurai cocktail with Woodford Reserve bourbon, yuzu juice, dry vermouth, a splash ginger ale, and lemon orange peel.

After enjoying my dining experiences at River Yacht Club and Dashi, I sat down with RYC's Executive Chef Jun Hee Lee to learn more about this unique waterfront fine dining destination.

Rafa Carvajal: Where are you from and why did you decide to work as a chef in Miami? Chef Jun Hee Lee: I am originally from South Korea. I spent some time in Vegas before Michael Mina opened StripSteak at the Fontainebleau and asked me to join his team, which is why I moved to Miami.

RC: Tell our readers about your culinary background. JHL: I was born and raised in Korea until the age of 28. I then moved to the United States and graduated from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. My culinary background is modern-Asian influenced Euro cuisine.

RC: What are the top three experiences from your background that you would like our readers to know about. JHL: I was born in Korea and received my Bachelors of Art degree in both advertising and journalism. I was an editor in local newspaper for a few years before I found my passion for cooking. During my time in culinary school in San Francisco, I was given the opportunity to work with Chef Charlie Trotter. Under Trotter's guidance, I was able to hone in on my passion of fine, modern cuisine. I worked under the direction of Joel Robuchon for over eight years at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. I climbed the ladder until I was promoted to chef de cuisine. During my time with Robuchon, we were proudly awarded one Michelin star.

RC: How is the culinary scene in Miami different from that of other cities you have worked in as a chef? JHL: In my opinion, the Miami culinary scene is still behind compared to the West Coast and New York. My biggest challenge here is finding quality cooks. 

RC: What type of cuisine can diners enjoy at your restaurant? JHL: We are providing a unique outdoor dining experience using local ingredients while celebrating some of the South American influences. We use many local fresh fish and produce. I would say we are a modern American cuisine.

RC: What are the most popular dishes at River Yacht Club? JHL: Our seafood dishes are always the most popular. For summer our most popular dishes are the Spicy Tuna Tartare and Salmon Crudo; people want something light and refreshing in this weather.

RC: Do you have any personal favorite dishes? Which ones? JHL: Every dish is my creation so it is really hard to pick just one! 

RC: Tell our readers about River Yacht Club's cocktail program. JHL: River Yacht Club features an extensive wine and cocktail list, which includes private label 'River Yacht Club Rosé,' a blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah from an estate in Côtes de Provence.

RC: Which dishes are you offering in your Miami Spice menu? JHL: Fresh Mixed Salad, Kalua Pork Belly and Salmon Crudo are the choices for appetizers; Skirt Steak, Risotto with summer vegetables, and Key West Yellowtail Snapper for the choice of entrée; and dessert is a pastry chef selection.   

RC: How did you choose your dishes for your Miami Spice menu? JHL: I find our guests here at RYC love our fresh seafood, so we gave them something they want. 

RC: Why do you think it is important to participate in the annual Miami Spice program? JHL: I think it's important for us to participate in Miami Spice so that everyone can have access to the high-caliber cuisine we are producing. Summers can be rough on restaurants here in Miami as we all know, and we want to make sure we stay relevant with our local guests.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about your culinary skills or dining at River Yacht Club? JHL: Miami is going through a culinary renaissance and, although we have a long way to go, River Yacht Club is a perfect example of pushing that envelope. We are located in the hottest area of Miami – Miami River – and we are committed to delivering a memorable experience from the moment you walk in the door. Our restaurant is a waterfront, outdoors oasis. It's a stunning, fun addition in Miami. The culinary aspect is progressive but not aggressive. It's a place that easily defines what Miami is to anyone coming in town.

Helsingin Sanomat reports (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that municipal workers in the capital city region are set for strike action next week after a conciliation committee set up to try to bring unions and employers together said on Thursday afternoon that the parties were too far apart and they could not propose a new agreement.

Agreement now seems far away, as employers and unions have very different views on pay claims. .

Unions are asking for a multi-year pay deal including extra raises on top of normal cost-of-living increases. Nurses have asked for 3.6 percent a year extra for five years, while the JHL public sector union wants 4.7 percent.

"It's impossible to propose an agreement," said Elina Pylkkänen, the civil servant chairing the conciliation committee. "Our work continues."

That means some 31,000 workers in Helsinki, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Espoo, including some 11,500 teachers, will go on strike from Tuesday unless the parties involved reach a surprise agreement. Nationwide, the strike involves 81,000 workers in Turku, Tampere, Jyväskylä, Rovaniemi, Oulu and Kuopio, as well as the capital city region.

Daycare services will be severely restricted in the affected towns, and many schools will be closed.

The strike has been postponed once by the Minister for Employment, Tytti Tuppurainen (SDP), and cannot be postponed again.

Finnair impacts

Business paper Kauppalehti takes a look at Finnair (siirryt toiseen palveluun), the majority state-owned airline that posted first quarter results this week. The company lost 130 million euros in the first quarter, thanks in large part to the closure of Russian airspace to western airlines.

That destroyed Finnair's strategy to serve as a gateway to Asia, with Helsinki as a hub for onward travel to European destinations.

The company is now looking for workarounds, including a focus on South Asia for long haul routes, but none offer the competitive advantages of a direct route over Siberia to China and Japan.

That is bad news for the company but also for Finland as a whole, says KL. Finland is not centrally located, and the Finnair strategy has meant much better — and cheaper — connections even for those not travelling to Asia.

That could now be coming to an end, and people living in Finland might have to get used to it.

Tappara take gold

All the papers cover ice hockey on Friday, after Tampere club Tappara took the Finnish championship on Thursday with a 1-0 win over Turku's TPS.
