Stage

Sesungguhnya ga inget kapan pertama kali I caught interest in stage production, tapi I do realise that I have A LOT OF interest in it in the last 3 to 4 years (kayanya turning pointnya Kpop sih covid 2020, + ps. beneran kalau mau having the best audiovisual experience of a stage, itu di Kpop sih gaada yang ngalahin, I’m sorry Coldplay, or western act in general, I still think u kebanyakan gimmick… *emoji salim*). Kalau interest di sound engineering mah sepertinya udah bisa di-trace back lebih jauh lagi karena dulu tiap Wisjul, Wisapril, Wisokto kalau mau cari Noni ya akan selalu hadir Gladi Resik di Sabuga H-1 hari wisuda, berdiri stand by di lantai 2 di belakang mixer tried to make sure suara condensor satu ga lebih gede dari yang lain, suara contrabass-nya ok, dsb.

2023 ini sendiri Alhamdulillah aku sudah datang… Music Bank di La Defense Paris, Lollapalooza Paris, Beyonce, The Weeknd… (Trevor Noah dan Chris Hadfield ga kuhitung show karena mereka technical intricacy-nya ga sesulit music show dengan live band). Orang-orang kadang mikir aku nonton konser solely for the ARTIST (which is not entirely wrong, I respect the artists with my entire heart of course). Tapi beneran, kalau respect-ku ke artis nilainya 100, respect-ku ke the whole production/stage crew, literally orang-orang behind the stage yang ga keliatan yang technically working their ass off to put the show together: yang nyusun track list, ngatur flow, CONTROLLING WHICH CAM TO SHOW ON THE SCREEN??, speaker di mana ada berapa, controlling lampu sorot dan fire/pyro atau gimmick apapun lah yang dipake, the audio engineers, dan semua-semuanya pokoknya, itu 100x respect-ku ke artist, jadi nilainya 10.000. Menurutku orang-orang ini hero sih. Posisi mereka in my heart hampir setara dengan orang-orang yang putting together the foundation of science: Lyell, Darwin, Wegener (well, MY field of science).

Bahkan ga cuma pas show-nya sih. Pre-show dan post-show juga. Yang selalu ku perhatikan betul-betul adalah gimana they do crowd control. Kemarin O2 Trevor Noah itu literally 20k orang. What was the biggest place I’ve been to? London stadium? Yes, it’s London stadium 80k.I always observe how they separate the entrance, what kind of tech they use to scan your ticket (I am very conservative I prefer having people do the scan with handheld device manually rather than self-scanning on a turnstile), how they do security check. Masih paling fascinated with the way people here do crowd control post-show sih. Pre-show yaudahlahya orang masih dateng di jam yang beda-beda. Lah post-show literally sejumlah manusia ini keluar berbondong-bondong di waktu yang sama dan in most cases they will take the same line of tube gitu kan. Apa ga risk hazard banget itu orang dempet-dempetan ngantri ke satu stasiun tube yang sama???

Terus yaudah ku masih yang “wow bisa ya ini semua diatur kalau semua pihak kerja sama yang bener, punya common goal yang sama”, si policenya bantuin, si arena-nya juga ada role buka tutup pintu, EO concertnya hire security yang bener (well mostly dari arenanya juga sih biasanya), terus yaudah artistnya juga jadi ga perlu ikutan mikirin hal-hal teknis selain performance?? Mereka tinggal latihan aja yang bener terus perform yang bener.

There is very specific reason why I chose to be a researcher/scientist: I find working with people sucks. I also chose to work with rocks ya simply karena rock won’t complain aja, and they are fair, unlike human. I think mindset ini unconciously muncul ya karena I used to work in environmentnya Indonesia, orang-orangnya sucks aja in general. Mungkin karena miskin (don’t @ me), jadi competitivenessnya tinggi sekali and you have to step on other people to be on top. Gabisa gitu yang be on top together (kalau ada orang Indo bilang “see you on top” to you, maksutnya adalah bukan kalian akan be on top di level yang sama melainkan dia di atas lo dikit, lo masih di bawah dia dikit).

Jujur mau ngomong apasih Non inti pos ini apa. Gatau. Lagi capek aja kayanya.

Oh tau deng. Intinya cuma mau bilang I take pride on what I am doing especially when it is related to things I have big interest on, contohnya adalah: stage, and performance (other things include: field trips related to science and rocks, and teaching). Terus ya kadang orang gabisa lihat aja gitu kayak how enjoyable things are for me? Kaya misalnya ku ngeluh capek nih emosi sama orang gara-gara ngurusin stage terus orang yang dicurhatin yang: “yaudahsih kak gausah dikerjain aja kalau gitu?”. BRO. You have no idea. Terus kadang aku frustrated banget juga karena si lawan bicara aku gapunya specific thing yang they REALLY enjoy doing?? Atau they REALLY have HUGE respect of? Jadi susah gitu loh ngejelasinnya. Kalau yang ngomong adalah teman yang suka lari gitu misalnya, ku bisa bales bilang “I really can’t say to you ‘yaudahsih gausah HM (Half-Marathon) kalau emang capek trainingnya?’, can’t I?”. Tapi ya logis juga sih, orang-orang yang ngasih komen kaya gitu juga (sorry banget nih), ya emang orang yang ga punya thing they REALLY LOVE or enjoy doing juga makanya mereka gabisa relate alias lo ngapain hidup di dunia ini only for being boringgggggg.

Udah tapi itu aja unek-unek yang mau dikeluarin: cuma that I have MAD RESPECT for people who are running shows. Whatever kind of show they are doing: live music skala kecil di pub, huge concert in arena (ESPECIALLY HUGE CONCERTS IN ARENA), talk show, stand-up comedies, musical, play, bahkan live talk show di TV juga. Ku kayanya kalau ga jadi geologist dulu (dan kalau di hidup ini kita ga butuh uang, which is a very impossible scenario), bakalan ambil sekolah audio engineering deh (sebetulnya recently lagi suka banget painting lagi juga kan, pengen ambil art juga sih, atau botany! Capek banget jujur keep up with my own interest, I feel bad for my brain). Props to my people in show business! (Which I have no friend in). (I also just started to realise how boring my friends are, where are my COOL friends??!) (Ya gak kerja di academia in the first place sih Non kalau mau punya cool friends, we are ALL nerds).

Dah gitu dulu aja sepertinya for today, mau tidur dulu sebelum my new thought interrupting my other recurring thought. I had a fun day indeed. I also just realise how much I love seeing people in general walaupun kadang pengennya tu Minggu cuma baca buku aja gitu kan apalagi kalau cuacanya hujan-hujan dingin kaya tadi (But I did read a chapter earlier in the morning! About ants di Manu reserve forest. Very interesting. I recently got into biology and conservation for no reason…).
