WIP Someday
@ollifree and @aria-i-adagio who tagged me, have some Tevinter-worldbuilding for free, fun and profit. Tagging literally everyone who sees this
The night was moonless. It was believed that Razikale favoured the new moon, that the pristine dark of a night such as this was but the span of His wings as his realm descended upon the living, the silent, shadowed sanctuary of mystery, of prophecy, of dreams.
And of thieves.
Throwing a reproachful look over at his son, who seemed to have paused to tighten the frayed straps of his thin sandals again, Nehmeon Barkhius dug relentlessly at the sand, melding himself into the endless shadow that enveloped the coast. Stealth, in a land as small and cracked as a seashell caught in a storm-tossed sea, would appear superfluous, a point of habit rather than necessity.
Ruins were no novelty in an Empire long past it’s prime, and outwardly, an undiscerning traveller might even have wandered the stretch of the far flung coastline past Qarinus without noticing the circle of ragged villages nestled around the nine ruined shrines, each overlooked by the cracked stone wings of the Dragon Gods of old.
But there was no telling when the secrets that slept beneath these still, pale sands would make even a grave-thief the target of the Magisterium. A weak link, The elders still whispered around the Temple lamps. All they need is a weak link.

"It comes from the bones, my Lady Ambassador. From the ashes, from the sea. The dead demand an answer, and the living- the living prevail."
Jievan Barkhius- local genderfluid necromancer possibly currently engaged in plotting against the Magisterium, scavenging through the temples of lost dragon gods, or raising Venatori corpses for fun and profit.
This stunning commission I recieved from @dela-png who brought Jie to life in so many ways 😭❤️ Jievan's magic, the play of light and shadow, the sheer intensity of the piece, the way you captured so much about him just from the description I gave you continues to entirely take my breath away every time I look at this.

'Til the Sirens Sound
Words: 800
No warnings only yearn
Figured I'll combine the sleeping at last and handholding prompts: "til the sirens sound, I'm safe" + "cold hands in warm ones"
Jievan Barkhius x Blackwall
*
“Is he the forgiving sort?” Jievan rested his chin against Blackwall’s chest, tucking a foot between Blackwall’s beneath the sheets.
“Mm?”
“This Maker of yours, does he forgive?”
Blackwall’s fingers paused between the strands of Jievan’s long, dark hair. “Why-“ He cleared his throat. “Why do you ask?”
“I just wonder.”
Jievan could’ve sworn his Warden flinched, his heart racing behind Jie’s palm on his chest. For a moment, he was more shadow than light, leaned back against the bed, away from the firelight. “I can’t say I know His mind.” He said, tucking Jie’s head beneath his. “For all I believe in Him, we don’t talk very much. Chantry says He might, if he finds it in us. Some days I can’t tell if they’ve ever talked to Him, either.”
“Finds regret?”
Blackwall swallowed. “Ah, redemption. I think.”
“I hope so.” Jievan snuggled closer, leaning up to kiss his bearded jawline. “I love you. I would want a kind God to watch over you.”
“Love, I-“ Blackwall looked away before Jievan’s dark eyes could find him, too much of him. He’d wilt beneath that gaze, or worse, spill the blood on his hands and his burning heart onto his lap, and that, that, if the Maker forgave, his love would not. It twisted him in cords of fire, that choice he repeats in its making. Maker forgive me. “What do you think of yours?”
“The Lost Gods are fallen.” Jievan smiled sadly, tracing the dragonling claws he wore on his stringed bracelet. “I imagine them kinder for it. It only makes sense to hope, doesn't it? That they’d forgive me for falling, too.”
Blackwall closed his palm over Jie’s, his warrior’s calluses brushing against the bruised light death magic left on Jievan’s bronze skin. Even by the fireside, Jie’s hands were cold from exhaustion, cold from the relentlessness of his constant vigilance, cold enough that the warmth startled his mind from wandering. “You haven’t fallen.”
“Haven’t I?” He turned around to face Blackwall properly, shaking his hair away from his pierced brows. “I’ve killed so much, and I don’t even spare the dead.”
Home was different, Jievan knew, where their dead, closed beneath the last standing shrine to Razikale, were the last sentinel between his people and the Imperium, the slavers who circled their streets like vultures, making for easy pickings among the impoverished, and the roiling seas, where dreadnoughts from Seheron answered cannon in kind.
He was no longer the boy who cowered beneath the temple as it weathered and trembled, nor were his spells the desperate reanimations he’d incanted as he fled Tevinter in the dead of the night. Jievan wondered if it had been the war, or his own power that had stolen his innocence from him. Know that I tried, he prayed, half to his Gods, half to the man he loved. Know that I tried before I was lost.
To me the dead are as your blade to you, He’d said.
Blackwall took a deep, shuddering breath. “It’s war, my love. We all have.”
“I see their faces, at night when I can’t sleep.” Jievan curled his fingers into Blackwall’s palm. “It scares me that it doesn’t scare me anymore.”
“You…you break into it, don’t you? And then you wear it like a glove. Or armor.” His chuckle grated at his own ears. What had he told the Wardens at Adamant? That he’d felt safe in their armor, buried behind a name. That he forgot to flinch from the mirror, and it frightened him too.
“Wear what?” Jievan’s eyes were damp, softened like they did for him. For him.
Maker forgive me.
“Guilt.”
He needed a drink. Two. A dozen. To clear his head, spill his guts. Both. Neither. He set to talking instead, summoning his voice where Jievan needed to hear it. It was good for it, that wretched thing. Lying, and believing it.
“Just because it doesn’t shackle you doesn’t mean you don’t remember. I know the kind of men who make a game of war, who turn monsters for surviving, or worse, for gold. Jievan-“ His touch was a rare quietude Jie had come to afford, a bright, burning calm that robbed his breath and returned it to him. “You’re not one of those men. You’ll never become what-“ What I’d become. What I was. Am. Blackwall smothered it in the fierce kiss he pressed to the back of Jievan’s palm. “One of them. Do you believe me, love?”
“I love you.”
Forgive me.
“Father once said it’s why we pray at all, why we believe.” Jie pressed his forehead against his Warden’s, sighing as Blackwall’s arms encircled him again. “For something great enough to forgive us, when we can’t, ourselves.”
“You won’t suffer that fate. I won’t let you.”
Jievan sniffed, blushing a little at the intensity in his voice. “Or I, you.”
Forgive me.
Blackwall kissed him, Jievan’s hair shrouding him in a dark curtain, and that faint scent of his magic, -- earth and thunderstorm. He kissed him like a prayer, like repentance, like promise.
Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me.

@ollifree I am blatantly stealing this thank
Inquisitor As Companion Asks - Jievan Barkhius
Tumblr media
art by @dela-png ❤️
1. If not for the Conclave, what would drive your character to join the Inquisition?
At the time of canon events, Jievan was research assistant/apprentice to Dorian, and both of them had Issues that kept them away and made them unwelcome in Tevinter.
Jie hails from the fringes of the Imperium, a Laetan mage from the sect of Razikale who swore themselves off the Magisterium back when the first Magisters entered the Black City and committed what his people considered a treachery to the Old Gods, a gross misuse of the magic they then swore to protect from falling into malicious hands.
The political instability of that region is both a serious threat and a unique opportunity, and Jie believes that he could help turn more dissenters in the Imperium against the Venatori, and stop his own people from falling into their clutches.
2. How would they meet the Inquisitor?
During In Hushed Whispers-
"Felix will be here soon enough." Dorian declared, inspecting the damage around them with a flourish of his staff. "He just needs to-"
A shiver of magic, quiet and unsettling, swept through the air.
"That was not you." Solas startled, ears picked up, his own magic beginning to glow at his fingertips.
"No." Felix came in through a small door that led to the cloister, but it was not him who spoke.
A young mage stepped out from the shadows, glancing once at Felix, then at the rest of the room. "That was me."
The light caught the constellation of piercings studded across his face, making them shine off his deep brown skin. "I had to check if we were safe before I brought him in."
"Jievan!" Dorian visibly relaxed. "You're finally here."
He smiled- a bare flicker of a thing.
"We heard fighting." Jievan tossed his hair- long, dark, slashed with streaks of burgundy- over his shoulders. "You didn't let me help."
"When we had company? Perish the thought." Dorian retorted. "You'd have drained half your energy in the showing off."
Jievan rolled his eyes. "Pity." He said dryly. His dark-eyed gaze slid across the room, landed for a moment on Blackwall. "I could've used some showing off."
*
If Champions of The Just was completed instead-
"If someone could open this door-" A desperate thud, then another, the sound of something- someone hitting the snow. "Please, we need-"
Cassandra exchanged a glance with Cullen, and the great gates opened.
"Help."The man swayed where he stood, staggering under the weight of the person he was holding up by the waist. Cullen steadied him by the elbow.
"My name-." He panted. "Is Dorian Pavus. We bring grave news from Redcliffe. An army of rebel mages-"
"Venatori." His companion mumbled weakly. He was shivering in the cold, deep purple robes ripped through brambles and vicious magic. "Alexius." He coughed, blood hitting the snow as he crumpled bonelessly against Dorian.
Dorian swallowed. "My apprentice, Jievan. We risked our lives to get here. If you could get him inside-"
"No." Jievan struggled against the grip around his shoulders. "Lyrium."
"Jie." Dorian snapped. "Don't be ridiculous."
"Get me lyrium, Dorian." Jievan lifted his head, shaking the curtain of dark hair away from his face. "I'll make those bastards pay."
*
3. What would some of their cutscenes look like?
The first would be after In Your Heart Shall Burn, where he'd be mourning the loss of Felix, (if In Hushed Whispers was completed), and of the rebel mages that he'd grown acquainted with (if Champions of The Just was completed).
If the Inquisitor allied with the Templars, he openly wonders if it'd have been different if the Inquisition rallied behind the mages. If the Inquisitor allied with the mages, he just remarks that many lives have been saved by this alliance, though he fears what must have become of the templars. Another one, after Here Lies The Abyss, he talks about the Old Gods and the wardens and his people's relationship to them. If the Wardens were exiled from Orlais, he does ask for an explanation, and reluctantly agrees if the reasoning is sound.
After Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts, he expresses disgust for both Celene and Gaspard- if Briala was put in charge, he Greatly Approves, and tells you not to let Anyone talk you into thinking you did wrong by letting the Empress die.
If the Truce ending was worked out, he Slightly Approves, and says that it's for the better that the civil war has only ended in name. Whatever be the outcome, he says he did enjoy watching you dance, and play The Game. After What Pride Hath Wrought, he has Many Questions, but immediately apologizes when he thinks he's overstepping. He's especially considerate of an elven Inquisitor, and says he's glad it was them and not anyone else. If the Inquisitor is human, he tells them that he understands why this is important and he hopes they know how to wield this knowledge, and when to lay it down.
Definitely a cute one when his approval is high enough where he reveals he's secretly been tending to an injured dragonling. A smol sidequest is opened up by this, involving finding dragon memorabilia to give him for Extra Approval. He eventually releases it to the wild once its clear it could thrive, and reminds the Inquisitor that he'd only trust a Friend (TM) with something like that. During Blackwall's personal quest, right after The Big Reveal at Val Royeaux, but before he's brought in for Judgement, he comes to the Inquisitor to plead with them to show him mercy. If Blackwall was pardoned, he thanks them.
His personal quest, Thicker Than Water, is begun by a cutscene where he finally opens up about his past (He's evasive on the details up to this point). He talks about how his family tried to sell ritually sealed secrets of his people to the Magister who was married to his sister, and when Jie sabotaged these rituals, his older sister Akira invited him to her place in Minrathous on the pretext of reconciling with him, only to try and trap him and make him tranquil to get him out of the way.
The quest involves finding Akira, who he suspects is aiding the Venatori in the Storm Coast. Once he finds, confronts, and defeats her, her husband and her lackeys in battle, Aki confesses that she only did what she did because the alternative was that the family would kill Jievan, and she was "doing him a kindness."
She also admits that Minrathous is a pit of vipers and she felt like her hand was forced because Jie wouldn't sit down and be good and not be "consumed by the past." At this point, in Dragon Age Fashion, there's a choice between killing Akira, and letting her go. In exchange for her life, Aki offers her alliance to the Inquisition.
Either way that it goes, Jie Greatly Approves, and back at Skyhold, a cutscene follows where he gives the Inquisitor a hug. Though he's deeply troubled by the events that happened, he feels like he needn't look over his shoulder so much all the time, since he's got good people who seems to want to look out for him, and maybe he should let them.
The choice in the personal quest does affect the Epilogue slide, however. If Aki was allowed to ally with the Inquisition, she does give valuable information for a while, and Jie gets to see the rest of his family, but the siblings never truly reconcile. After the Inquisition is disbanded, their relationship grows more hostile, and Akira stops communicating altogether, likely never to be seen or heard from again.
4. What would their romance route look like? Would they be romanceable?
Very Romanceable. He's bi and poly and if the poly isn't a dealbreaker he's Very Much In For Love, (or casual sex tbh he's happy with that too) His full romance route is rather slow-burn, however-It does take a bit of careful effort to earn his trust- but he does make his interest Known if it is pursued.
He's great at dropping suggestive hints and vanishing into the shadows- which I'm pretty sure is how his first kiss scene would go. The mini quest to unlock his Big Romance Scene is picking up all the notes and flowers he leaves around Skyhold- and he later remarks that he didn't think you'd still believe he was worth the effort, and the trouble, but he'd be doing you a disservice if he didn't believe in you now, so he does.
Goes on to wax poetic about every little thing he's noticed about you, etc etc etc. His Romanced Greeting is "And here you are, my love." and his Romanced Farewell is "Be safe, please." If you romance him, a random liddol note might appear by the Inquisitor's quarters.
.5. If they romanced someone as Inquisitor, would they still fall for that person as a companion? How would that play out? How would they react to that person being romanced by the “new” Inquisitor?
Jie's with Blackwall and Josephine, and if both of them are in no committed monogamous relationships, Yes they absolutely do kiss kiss fall in love, following largely the same in-game arc. If they're taken and Sharing isn't in the cards, he sighs at it, but he's not that hung up over it. I can sort of see him getting with Krem? It'd be adorable.
6. Write some of their party banter.
When entering the Storm Coast.
Jie: This feels like home.
Dorian: Disgusting.
Jie: That's a bit rich.
Dorian: Well. Point taken.
*
Cassandra: I hear you practice the arts of the Mortilitasi.
Jie: Not precisely. I've learnt a few tricks from the Nevarran school, but there are differences.
Cassandra: For the better, I hope.
Jie: I didn't expect you to disapprove, Seeker.
Cassandra: Nothing intended- there are certainly- uses for such magic- but I do not share my countrymen's fascination with crypts and the dead.
Jie: Huh. The other Pentaghast I knew thought differently.
Cassandra: Well, my family- wait. What other Pentaghast do you know?
Dorian: (Laughs) Ah. That one.
*
Blackwall: Are you alright, love?
Jie: I can walk. If you're still worried, amatus, maybe you could take a closer look at camp?
*
After Vivienne's personal quest:
Jie: I heard what happened, Lady Vivienne. I'm sorry. If there's anything I could do-
Vivienne: It was Bastien's time, missed as he will be. You were there, were you not? When they took on the wyvern?
Jie: I was. It didn't give us too much trouble- I only wished it'd helped more. Still. He went loved, and in peace. There's pain enough in this world.
Vivienne: That there is, my dear.
*
Cole: It's a pretty song.
Jie: What?
Cole: The one in your heart, the one that puts you to sleep.
Jie: I- oh.
Cole: I'm sorry they took it away.
Jie: They didn't-
Cole: They made you afraid. They took it away. I want to bring it back, but fear- footsteps against wood, thundering, your heart in your throat- branches breaking in the breeze, wind in the curtains feels like a storm, hands in your hair, no, wrong- if my heart sings, they'll know where it is.
Jie:... You and I need to have a talk about tact.
*
After Jie's personal quest, if Akira was left alive.
Vivienne: I understand the gamble you took, my dear. I have contacts in the Imperium who could keep an eye on her.
Jie: Thank you. You needn't go to more trouble than I'm worth, though.
Vivienne: What trouble? Only someone with neither the skill to hold her position or the ability to earn it could be that foolish.
Jie: (Snorts) Akira's always been like that. Desperate. Shows her cards too quickly.
Vivienne: Tragic.
*
After Jie's personal quest, if Akira was killed.
Varric: Hey, Glower.
Jie: I'll be fine.
Varric: I know.
Jie: She had it coming.
Varric: That- doesn't make it much easier...Look, if you ever want to talk about it-
Jie: I will, Varric. Im glad you're here.
*
7. What would be on their tombstone in the Fade?
Corruption. As in- being corrupted. By demons or the world.
8. What kind of Inquisitor would drive them to leave the Inquisition/confront them about their actions?
Essentially someone who's obsessed with their own power and controlling everyone around them for their benefit, terms that take away people's agency, that sort of thing. Also leaving Blackwall to his fate or keeping him in servitude definitely gets his romance with the Inquisitor to end if there was one.
9. Where in Skyhold would they be found?
Curled up by the window-seat in the library. Occasionally in the rookery.
10. If Inquisition operated like DA:O, what would their gift items be? What would their approval and disapproval Feast Day items be?
Little stone figurines of big, scary animals. He lays them all in a row to baby-talk to them. Don't ask him about it. Books work too- if not something magic-related, one of Varric's novels would do the trick. He's a big fan.
11. How would they grow as a person? How would they compare at the end of the Inquisition as a companion to who they were as the Inquisitor?
Jie's Not Inquisitor, but if he were- his arc would revolve around his struggle to make peace with being Seen, I guess? Accepting his own worth as a leader, learning to operate in the open, rather than from the shadows, that sort of thing. This does apply to his companion-arc, but his companion arc is mostly about him reclaiming the youth and joy and his own vulnerability, all that he compromised on and kept under lock and key to become, essentially, untouchable.
12. Do they believe the Herald of Andraste is really the Herald of Andraste?
He's not Andrastian, but he's going to respect an Inquisitor's understanding of what happened to them and not question their faith or challenge how they process things. He wasn't there, after all. The Inquisitor has enough on their shoulders, and if faith helps them as it helps the people, as long as they're not pushing it on those who don't want it, or using it to further their own interests, he's not going to argue with it.
13. If the Herald didn’t have them tag along to prep the trebuchets, what would they do during the battle for Haven? (bonus: would they join in on the impromptu Dawn Will Come choir practice in the camp?)
Reanimating red templar corpses to turn them against their own kind and cause confusion, of course. Also doing a double check if everyone who could be saved, has been. (Jie sings beautifully, but he doesn't do so anymore where anyone can hear.)
14. What's Varric's nickname for them?
Glower.
15. Without the influence of their decisions for the Inquisition, which of the companions do they get along with? Which ones do they bicker with?
Other than Dorian, and naturally, Blackwall, and Josephine, he gets along really well with Leliana, Varric, Bull and Vivienne. Vivienne and him were wary and even disapproving of each other at the beginning- but they found common ground in that they respect and understand the danger inherent in magic, and eventually became good friends.
Sera thought he was weird and his magic was creepy and kept her distance for a while, and he reminds Cassandra a little too much of the more eccentric Pentaghasts. Solas and him have mostly academic discussions than anything else. Jie's generally pretty private, so he's a little on the edge about Cole- spirit of compassion and upstanding young man notwithstanding, he'd Really Like It if Cole didn't air out personal information when theyre scaling cliffs on the Storm Coast.
.16. What would the Fear Demon say to them in the Fade to try and discourage them?
"I am you, Jievan. Believe yourself the hero all you like- you and I know it's only a matter of time before you run again. You will run, or you will give in- like all your people before you, abandoned by your Gods, destined to fail. (Laughs) But you hardly need me to remind you of it, do I? So afraid. Always so afraid. How much longer can you hold on?"
He'd reply with "Longer than you can keep yapping, demon."
17. Where do they hang out in the Winter Palace? What’s their thoughts on the nobles/The Game?
He'd be in the Guest Wing, near one of those balconies, doing a pretty good job and not letting on that he's screaming on the inside. Growing up as he did, he's competent at the game- good at picking things up and reading the room and eavesdropping and giving absolutely nothing away- but it pushes all his trauma buttons so much that he hates it. He would grin and bear it because he doesn't want to fuck up or be a burden, but he'd definitely need time to recover from that.
18. What’s their reaction to a dragon showing up?
"Awww" or "Careful! We don't need to hurt her!"
19. Once Corypheus is beaten, what do they do during the party? Do they stay with the Inquisition, or go somewhere else? What could the Inquisitor do to convince them to stay?
Jie and Blackwall would hang out near Josephine, making sure she's remembering to have fun. They'd both stay as long as Josephine and/or Dorian does; he says he's not going anywhere at the moment, Doubly so if he's romancing the Inquisitor. Probably asks when they can get out of there to Smooch.
20. How do they react to learning abominations can retain their consciousness and identity, and even live peacefully with their spirits/demons, as seen in Stone-Bear Hold?
Idk man they don't sell that DLC here
21. What do they think of the discoveries made in the Deep Roads? Do they make any comments on anything?
Idk man they don't- Fascinated and intimidated, hello? He'd talk Shaper Valta's ear off with all the questions. What they discover about the Titans changes so Much about how magic itself is understood, and he's definitely taking some news back to Dagna.
22. If you have another Inquisitor, how would those two get along, specifically?
I have several- but to go with the Canon Inquisitor- he gets along wonderfully with Narein Cadash as everyone does- he almost comes to see him as an older brother. He connects with Narein's relationship to erasure and history, and he's moved by the consideration and respect Narein gives to his allies and companions. Sometimes Narein comes to his work desk to find a single note written in black ink telling him to take it easy, he is trusted and will not be forgotten.
23. In Trespasser, what “gift” would they give the Inquisitor, if any?
A picnic in some quiet, secret spot he's scouted out. Far enough away from the bulk of the stress and chatter, but not too secluded that he can't see the light.
24. What are their plans for after the Exalted Council? Will the Inquisition staying in tact or being disbanded make a difference?
Whatever happens with the Inquisiton, him and Blackwall are going to Antiva City to get married to Josephine, is what he's doing. They spend quite a while in the Montilyet's estate, then they go travelling with Blackwall, aiding the newly formed Lucerni from a distance via communication crystal, until the time he has to return to Tevinter to help them in person. Post that, he comes back to settle down in Antiva with his partners for good.
25. In the alternate reality, if they were corrupted with lyrium, how do they act? What’s their attitude about the end of the world/their inevitable death?
He pretends to ally with his sister, who was in the Venatori, so that he could spy on Alexius and gather information. It's horrid and completely breaks him down mentally, but he does what he can to make them pay- until Alexius figures out what he's doing and imprisons him. He comes along with Dorian and the Inquisitor and he's convinced the entire time that he's hallucinating it.
He's only kept himself alive that long because he knows what's been happening to Felix and he wants to save him from his father because that was the last friend he had left and he needed to give him at least a dignified death. It's not Leliana but Jie who confronts him about Felix, and when Alexius lashes out in anger, he dies.
