In 1994 The B-52’s (still minus Cindy Wilson) appeared in the big screen live acrion version of The Flintstones and performed The Bedrock Twitch in the film and recorded their own version of the theme song which played over the film’s closing credits. In the film the band is now called The BC-52’s, keeping with the prehistoric theme. The film was directed by Brian Levantand written by Tom S. Parker, Jim Jennewein, and Steven E. de Souza. It is a live-action adaptation of the 1960–1966 animated television series of the same name. The film stars John Goodman as Fred Flintstone, Rick Moranis as Barney Rubble, Elizabeth Perkins as Wilma Flintstone, and Rosie O'Donnell as Betty Rubble, along with Kyle MacLachlan as a villainous executive-vice president of Fred’s company, Halle Berry as his seductive secretary and Elizabeth Taylor (in her final theatrical film appearance), as Pearl Slaghoople, Wilma’s mother. The film was shot in California at an estimated $46 million budget, was theatrically released on May 27, 1994, and earned almost $342 million worldwide against a $46 million budget, making it a huge box office success, despite earning negative reviews from critics. Observers criticized the storyline and tone, which they deemed too adult and mature for family audiences, as well as the casting of O'Donnell as Betty and Taylor as Pearl, but praised its visual effects, costume design, art direction, and Goodman’s performance as Fred.

THE FLINTSTONES (1994)
Directed by: Brian Levant
Written by: Tom S. Parker, Jim Jennewein, & Steven E. de Souza
Starring: John Goodman, Elizabeth Perkins, Rick Moranis, Rosie O’Donnell, Kyle MacLachlan, Halle Berry, Elizabeth Taylor, Jonathan Winters, Jay Leno
Just looking at the cast for this adaptation shows Universal wanted to get this right. Whether or not they succeeded is another matter however. My generation is probably the last when it comes to watching The Flintstones (or Jetsons for that matter) and it is way too ‘dated’ now for kids today. But it was a landmark program for Television and not just because it was the first prime time, animated series. It actually had a good mix of great performances, some nice puns, and unique story lines considering it was animation. Remember it was 1960 when the animated series debut and it would take almost another thirty years for anything else like it came out. (Now a days it is common place to see adult animated series on Television.)
The movie in general got the casting right and on the surface has the tone down for the screen. John Goodman is great in anything but him as Fred is just genius and the same goes for Rick Moranis & Rosie O’Donnell as the Rubbles. It also looks pretty damn good with fantastic production design and computer graphics even for 1994. It is like they took everything from the animated series and perfectly translated the background designs. Williams Hanna and Joseph Barbera were in as cameos so I hope they were impressed with this as I was.
Then again not all of it is perfect. The story is very dull at times and quite frankly a bit TOO adult for children. The show did a nice job balancing a sitcom plot but having enough for the kiddies to not bore them, When I see scenes of Halle Berry being over the top sexy or Fred getting involved with embezzlement schemes it bored me at five years old and even now at twenty-four. So the writing isn’t all that great but for the most part your kid won’t care too much with the great design work on hand.
