Glory is a 1989 film directed by Edward Zwick about the first volunteer fighter unit formed by African Americans in the United Army during the American Civil War.

The film is inspired by the personal letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, who led the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment from its formation in February 1863 until the attack on Fort Wagner in South Carolina, where he died during the assault in July of the same year.

Among the awards received, the film received five nominations for the 1990 Oscars, winning three as best supporting actor for Denzel Washington, best cinematography and best sound.

On September 17, 1862, during the American Civil War, Captain Robert Gould Shaw was slightly wounded during the Battle of Antietam and returned home to Boston on medical leave. During a ceremony in November of the same year, he met the abolitionist Frederick Douglass and at the request of Governor John Andrew, accepted the task of training and commanding with the rank of colonel the first regiment of African-American men of the Union Army.

The men are informed that due to President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, the Confederacy has declared that all captured black Union soldiers will be returned to slavery and the white officers under their command shot.

In the subsequent clashes, the regiment gained the valor and respect of the white soldier and Shaw proposed himself to General George Strong as the first attack force on Fort Wagner, as part of the campaign to secure the port city of Charleston.

The officers are aware that breaking the fort's defenses will not be easy; in fact the fortress had previously been attack by a white regiment but without success (First Battle of Fort Wagner). A front-line force of the 54th, with supporting white companies, begins the Second Battle of Fort Wagner.

The film budget was $18 million and filming took place in Georgia and Massachusetts from February 9 to April 27, 1989.

Rotten Tomatoes indicates that 93% of 40 selected critics gave the film a positive review, with an average score of 7.9 out of 10.

The Libertines are back with All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade, their first album in nine years, which will be out March 8 via Casablanca Records. Peter Doherty, Carl Barât, John Hassall, and Gary Powell recorded the album over a four-week period in February and March of this year with producer Dimitri Tikovoï (The Horrors/Charli XCX) at The Albion Rooms studio in Margate, UK. “We really came together as a band,” says Doherty. “It was a moment of rare peace and unity, with all the members contributing.”

Barât adds, “Our first record was born out of panic, and disbelief that we were actually allowed to be in a studio; the second was born of total strife and misery; the third was born of complexity; this one feels like we were all actually in the same place, at the same speed, and we really connected.”

The first single “Run Run Run,” which was written and sung by Carl and is a corker, with that Libertines swagger and camaraderie intact. “It’s about being trapped, and trying to escape your dismal life, a bit like the man in Bukowski’s ‘Post Office,’” says Carl. “The worst thing for The Libertines would be to get stuck in a ‘Run-run-run’ rut, constantly trying to relive our past.”

The Libertines will preview the album at two shows at Margate’s 500 capacity Lido on December 9 & 10. Anyone who preorders the album will be entered into a lottery for tickets.

The Libertines’ Carl Barât was guest DJ at AFHF 2023 this year. Louis has also backed Andrew Cushin’s first album, released through Peter Doherty’s Strap Originals label.

Andrew Kötting’s haunted pilgrimage across the British countryside takes its inspiration from Iain Sinclair’s book,  Edge of the Orison (1997), and retraces the tragic journey of English poet John Clare (1793-1864)from fleeing an asylum in Epping forest to his fateful homecoming, 80 miles away. Kötting takes the perambulatory possibilities of the documentary further into a landscape his own ranging artistic sensibilities have enabled : between collaged diary, cine-scrap-book and esoteric travelogue Kotting’s world is a visionary mischief found in traversal; a collaborative trek (including regular contributors Alan Moore and Sinclair) into the arcane viscera of Englishness as a territory imagined through happenstance and the muddy miles underfoot. In By Our Selves, Toby Jones plays the wandering avatar of John Clare (his trail in generational communion with his father, the actor Freddie Jones, who has also famously voiced the poetry of Clare), as he makes his way through eerily lensed black and white forests and forgotten lanes.

The Hagley Library is honoring Juneteenth today with these photographs of members of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, a regiment of black federal troops, at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. The regiment began recruiting shortly after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.

Initially, many white Americans in the Union states were uneasy with and doubtful about the black soldiers of the 54th regiment ability to serve. But white abolitionists and black Americans actively recruited for their ranks. Two of Frederick Douglass's sons were early enlistees, the black abolitionist Major Martin Robison Delany and black war correspondent George E. Stephens worked to recruit enlistees, and Robert Gould Shaw, the son of two white Boston abolitionists, was appointed to command the regiment as its Colonel by Massachusetts Governor John Albion Andrew, an antislavery advocate who had long been a leading force in enlisting black volunteer enlistees to serve as uniformed soldiers in the Union Army.

While the over 1,500 soldiers and officers that served in the 54th Massachusetts Infantry would come to conduct themselves in the Civil War with distinction throughout its extensive service, the regiment is most famous for its valor in the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, fought on July 18th, 1863 at Morris Island, South Carolina.

After the regiment was tasked with leading the assault on Fort Wagner, Colonel Shaw was killed in battle along with 29 men of the 54th. An additional 149 men from the regiment were wounded, and 91 were captured, later died of wounds from the battle, or were declared missing in action. While Union forces were ultimately unable to capture Fort Wagner, the 54th received wide acclaim for their conduct during the battle, and their reputation spurred the enlistment of other African-American volunteer soldiers and helped substantially to improve white Northerners’ opinion of black soldiers and the prospect of emancipation. One member of the regiment that was among the wounded, Sgt. William Carney, born into slavery in 1840, was awarded the Medal of Honor on May 23, 1900.

Our second post for National Photography Month features the Andrew S. Dibner Collection of Tintypes, which includes more than 16,000 tintypes, mostly unidentified 19th century portraits produced by studio and itinerant photographers in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, eastern Canada, and elsewhere. Massachusetts physician Andrew S. Dibner collected these photographs between 1992 – 2003.

There is also a head that blocks center stage and the action is often lost behind it. Act two is much better with no blackouts and only some heads on the bottom that are worked around well. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. There’s a lot of chatter and rustling from the audience, but the sound is otherwise excellent. Includes playbill scans.

The lighting in this theater really liked my camera and I know the show almost “by heart” so I think I followed the action as well as possible. My battery died during the last song, but it starts at the very beginning with only one drop out during dialogue.

NOTES: Closing show! Or “rock concert” if you ask Christy Altomare. Yeah so this is a pretty obstructed video. Everyone was really excited so people were standing up, people were moving around, and honestly I had a little trouble paying attending to my viewfinder with all of the tears streaming down my face. Like Beetlejuice I would say it’s mostly like highlights, but all of the things that happen in the center part of the stage are captured really well and the video is DEFINITELY Christy centric. “Journey to the Past” is complete and gorgeous and you will cry. First act starts around when Anya meets Dmitry and the second act starts during “Crossing A Bridge.”

Carl Barat has shared an update on progress on The Libertines‘ new album, as well as speaking out against the term “landfill indie”.

Barat was speaking to NME while giving us the tour and lowdown of their new hotel, bar, restaurant and studio The Albion Rooms in Margate – which he said they wanted “to be an engine for art and artistry”. As well as finally opening the doors to the public, the band have also been using The Albion Rooms to work on their long-awaited follow-up to 2015’s ‘Anthems For Doomed Youth‘.

“It’s been going well, but it’s been difficult with COVID,” Barat told NME. “We started writing here, and that was going really well but John [Hassall, bass] is in Denmark and Pete [Doherty] is in France. It’s been a fucker to travel. We’re just waiting to get back on it, really. We’re all writing and it’s all positive. We’re just waiting to get back and lay stuff down, it’s just a matter of when. It would be nice if we could do it here. That would make a lot of sense. We’ve never been readier. We just need to get together and do it.”

Last year, bandmate Pete Doherty told NME that the band’s fourth album featured “freestyle rap” and had a diversity of styles akin to The Clash’s divisive ‘Sandinista‘.

“It started off as ‘Sandinista’, and the reason we said that was so that everyone could bring everything in without anyone controlling it, then at the end we’d choose the best ones,” Barat responded. “I don’t know if it was very representative soundwise, but then we’ve all got different influences and we’re trying to bring it all together. It’s a bit of an odyssey every time we make a Libertines record.”

Asked about if he heavily considered the band’s influence and what they ought to sound like in the musical landscape of 2020, Barat replied: “I do pay mind to it, I paid too much mind to it to the point where we had to stop and start again. Meanwhile, the band’s name was recently brought up in an online debate on “landfill indie” – a term used when remembering and celebrating the prevailing guitar indie scene of the ’00s. Barat told NME that The Libertines “did their very best to not be lumped in with Britpop” when they first formed in ’90s, and didn’t feel part of a scene from thereon.

“Landfill indie is a very cruel term! It’s so harsh to a lot of my dear friends, brothers and sisters from over the years,” he said. “I don’t understand it. It was a halcyon era, a golden time.”

Elba - What are your fave idioms/sayings?

This isn’t something I say, but I have this one friend who says “to each their own” so often it’s lost all meaning.

As for me, for some reason I like horse-related ones--”healthy as a horse”, “could eat a horse”, “horsing around”, “hung like a horse” although I have less occasion to use that one than the others, etc. It could just be that “horse” is a fun word to say. (I used to deliberately pronounce it in an odd accent, as @goldoans can attest.)

Bath - Which historical figures do you admire most?

I’m not counting saints even though they are historical figures because that’s not really what this question is asking. I take a “never meet your heroes” attitude towards the personal biographies of historical figures whose public lives I find admirable. (The big exception is J.R.R. Tolkien, who’s been such a huge influence on my life that I’ve been contending with various aspects of his life, times, and beliefs since mid-childhood.) With that disclaimer, I have a great admiration for the public legacy of John Albion Andrew, Governor of Massachusetts during the Civil War and one of the few figures of that time to staunchly oppose both the Slave Power and the Know Nothings.
