03.09.23 Michael Byron's new work In One Second There Will Be A Thousand Plateaus Perhaps for two pianos and small orchestra featuring pianists Joseph Kubera and Steve Beck with Petr Kotik conducting members of the S.E.M. Ensemble. At Roulette Intermedium.
Michael Byron - Halcyon Days - pieces for percussion, and other pieces for two pianists
Michael Byron’s “Halcyon Days” is unique percussion (marimbas, xylophones, vibraphones, glockenspiels, tubular bells, maracas) and keyboard music that’s both wild and pensive, played by an all-star group of new-music performers that includes William Winant, the William Winant Percussion Group (Winant, Tony Gennaro, Michael Jones, and Scott Siler), Lisa Moore, Vicki Ray, and Aron Kallay. Except for the final track (a piano solo written in 2016), these pieces are from a previously under-documented period of Byron’s work—the mid-’70s, when he composed unique and remarkable minimalist-styled music. This album treats us to clangorous clouds of polyrhythms and simple, direct, quiet works, both of which explore rich harmonies and bespeak a sense of transcendent motionlessness.
Byron comments about the album, “Poet Anne Tardos wrote that ‘Time doesn’t pass. We pass.’ Most of the pieces on this CD were composed in the 1970s. It seemed like everything was beginning then. Lifelong friends were made, and improbable ideas were shared; composing neither began nor ended. This CD features virtuoso percussionist, and my oldest friend, Bill Winant. Over the last 50 years he has performed and premiered every percussion piece that I’ve ever composed.”.
Michael Byron’s music tends to be harmonically rich, rhythmically detailed, and virtuosic. It’s often praised for its ability to create dense constructions out of relatively limited materials. His works have been performed and recorded by such new-music champions as Sarah Cahill, Joseph Kubera, William Winant, FLUX Quartet, Kathleen Supové, and Thomas Buckner. The Wire’s Julian Cowley has written that Byron is “one of those contemporary composers who can justifiably be classed as crucial. . . . Byron’s music dances with tremulous iridescence.” (Byron’s music has appeared on seven previous Cold Blue Music albums.)

Receiving this album for review the fact is I actually shed a tear when, upon opening my mail, I found the cover of this album cause my emotions to jump to regions of nostalgic memories deeply treasured.
Another fact is that, due to COVID 19, the virtual stoppage of all live concerts, and shifts in my scheduling priorities I had stopped following the career of Mr. Gibson (1940-2020) for the last…

One of the few movies I've watched where irony gets
personified with such grace that it makes you feel that there is a
little bit of good after all in this God forsaken world. The
movie starts of with introduction of 3 parallel stories. Joseph
(Achyuth Kumar) being an honest officer. Raaji (Vasishta Simha) and his
love track and lastly Kubera (Raj B Shetty) somewhat struggling as a
small time robber.The
narration goes on a bit slow as the characters are being introduced. The
3 stories do take up a lot of time to unfold in the first half, Right
before intervening the seeming 3 parallel/separate stories, leading to
the suspenseful interval. What follows next is the comic solution to all
the problems.Set in the
period of demonetization and its after-effects. We see the struggles of
a common man portrayed through some of the characters. What
sets the story apart however is the beautiful picturization of the
irony through certain characters. Though honesty gets you in some
trouble, instead of facing it with heads held high, if dishonesty is
chosen upon, it'll lead to deeper graver problems and how honestly helps
to face it back.Things that work :1. Natural acting by Achyuth Kumar, Raj B Shetty and Vasishta Simha. A prime example of casting done right.2. Brisk pace in the 2nd half that holds the audience to their seats. Exclusion of songs helped. 3. Great comic timing especially the banter between Achyuth and Raj BThings that didn't work :1. Slow first half2. Little to no marketing was done.

Ram is one of the most popular Hindu Deity and Hero from India’s epic literature Ramayana. His name is associated with various major Hindu festivals and also with sociopolitical movements in India (which we will be discussing in separate articles).
This article focuses on what Ram actually symbolizes. This is the conversation between Sages Valmiki and Narada at the beginning of epic Ramayana. This conversation thus highlights the the qualities of Ram and the very reason why Hindus worship Ram. While worshipping Ram; one actually worships the qualities of Ram and tries to imbibe the same in himself or herself.
As Joseph Campbell rightly puts it in his seminar work; The Hero with a Thousand Marks; Pain and pleasure do not enclose him, he encloses them - and with profound repose. And since he is what all of us may be, his presence, his image, the mere naming of him, helps.
Sage Valmiki:
Who can possibly be full of virtues in this world at present? Nay, who is possessed of prowess and knows what is right? Who is conscious of services done, truthful of speech and firm of resolve?
Who is possessed of right conduct and who is friendly to all living beings? Who is a man of knowledge? Nay, who is powerful and who has a singularly lovable appearance?
Who has subdued his self? Who has conquered anger? Who is possessed of splendor and who is above fault – finding and who do the very gods dread when his wreath has been provoked in battle?
Sage Narada:
There is one; descended in the line of Ikshvaku, and known by the name of Rama. He has fully controlled his mind, is very powerful, radiant and resolute and brought his senses under control.
He is intelligent, sagacious, eloquent, glorious and an exterminator of foes. He is distinguished with broad shoulders, powerful arms, a neck shaped as a conch and a stout chin.
He is marked with a broad chest, a mighty bow and a collar bone covered with flesh, and is capable of subduing his foes. His long arms extend right up to his knees. He has a well formed head, a shapely forehead and a charming gait.
He is of medium stature (neither very tall nor very short), has well-proportioned limbs, has an unctuous complexion, is mighty, has a rounded chest, large eyes, is full of splendor and has auspicious marks on his body.
He knows the secret of virtue, and is true to his promise and intent on the good of the people. He is illustrious, full of wisdom, pure in his dealings, a man of self-control and concentrated mind.
He is supporter of the creation like Bramha, Affluent, The slayer of his enemies, A protector of living beings, and a staunch defender of faith.
He is a vindicator of his own virtue and the protector of his own people. He knows the truth of the Vedas and the sciences auxillary to them and is a past master in archery.
He knows the real meaning of all the pious, high-minded and shrewed.
He is always sought by the righteous as the ocean is by rivers. He is noble, nay, alike to all and always wears a pleasing countenance.
He is endowed with all excellences and enhances the delight of Kausalya. He vies with the ocean in profoundity and compares with the Himalayan point of firmness.
He is replica of Lord Vishnu in prowess and is pleasing of aspect as the moon. In anger, he resembles the destructive fire at the end of creation and is a counterpart of mother earth in forbearance.
He equals Kubera in liberality and is another Dharma as it were in point of truthfulness.

Hailed by Village Voice critic Kyle Gann as one of “new music’s most valued performers,” JOSEPH KUBERA has been recognized as a leading interpreter of contemporary music for the past 30 years. Mr. Kubera has had a long and committed relationship to John Cage and his music since the early 1970s. One of the few pianists performing the difficult chance-based, post-1950 works, he has recorded the complete Music of Changes and the Concert for Piano and Orchestra, and has toured with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company at Cage’s invitation. Composers who have written for Mr. Kubera include Larry Austin, Anthony Coleman, David First, Alvin Lucier, Roscoe Mitchell, Howard Riley, and “Blue” Gene Tyranny, among others.
I can’t exactly recall the first time I heard Roscoe Mitchell’s music. I was introduced to him by our mutual longtime friend and collaborator, Thomas Buckner.
Roscoe’s music-making was astonishing to hear the first time, and it has amazed me every time since. It is not simply a matter of his astounding virtuosity, but of his sense of space, poise, and then the genesis, development and transformation of materials as they present themselves in performance, both in solo and ensemble contexts. Often I get the impression that it’s Roscoe’s instrument itself that is offering ideas, in real time.
Then, beyond his musicianship and creativity, there was the pleasure of getting to know this kind and generous soul on a personal level and as a collaborating performer. For a number of years, I was honored to be part of his New Chamber Ensemble, and particularly honored that Roscoe wrote a piano piece (8-8-88) for me.
A profound insight that I learned through working with Roscoe was a sense, new to me at the time, of allowing new musical ideas to take their own space within an improvising ensemble, and introducing them at the right time.
Roscoe has been a real inspiration to me, and I treasure our longtime friendship.
