Ire of Beasts: Blake, The Tyger, & Vampyr

"If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.”

“You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough.” There is both beauty in beasts, and there are beautiful beings that are secretly beastly. In William Blakes The Tygerand the video game Vampyr, there is one common theme: the aspect of creation, specifically sentient beings whom can look normal or beautiful in one but dangerous in all or most others. In “The Tyger” it is questioned how could God, who made the sweet and peaceful Lamb, have made the fearsome and roaming tiger. In the game Vampyr, there is the main character Jonathan Reid; a doctor, a person who heals and saves life, is turned into a vampire, a being who hunts and takes life. The question is how such a possibility be allowed let alone what does Dr. Reid now do. William Blake is a famous writer who is able to pose such themes and questions in his works.

William Blake was born on November 28th, 1757, into a moderate London family right before the American Revolution in 1775 then the French Revolution in 1789. He had a fairly peaceful childhood and upbringing, as one of seven children and his father a hosier. Blake was also an imaginative child, in one instance he said that he “saw a tree filled with angels, bright angelic wings bespangling every bough like stars”. His parents enrolled him into drawing school at age ten, in his early teenage years Blake did commissioned for engravers, at twenty-one he enrolled into the Royal Academy while having a job as an illustrator for novels from Don Quixote to Ladies’ Magazine. Blake witnessed the London Riots in 1780 firsthand, and married Catherine Butcher August 18th, 1782 who after Blake’s tutoring would help and work with him in his works. In 1784, William was a printseller and also had to face family issues but throughout the years, politics, religion, the times, and his brother Robert helped shape him and his skills of literature for years to come. He even had a group of followers who called themselves “the Ancients”. Other pieces Blake would make are The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Songs of Innocence, Visions of the Daughters of Albion, to his “Minor Prophecies”; two of which being The First Book of Urizen and The Book of Los. William Blake would eventually pass on due to jaundice and gallstones on August 12th, 1827. William Blake’s The Tyger, in is piece Songs of Experience, 1794, Roams mainly questions the existence of such a creature. The inspiration is by the works of John Milton, Blake using the phrasing of the name tyger, of which at the time it was to describe any leonine beast for the word “tiger” didn’t yet exist, suggest that both heavenly and infernal forces “Could frame thy fearful symmetry” (line 4, first stanza). In the first line of the second stanza “distant deeps” can be contextually linked to Hell and “skies” or “distant skies” to Heaven. The work itself makes one think and look about tigers; the black stripes and orange fur, long whiskers, feline eyes, and how they simply be in nature can be considered regal, beautiful even. Yet at the same time, it can be bewildering with how ferocious, savage, and nightmarish a tiger can be baring fangs and claws as it hunts, fights, and kills. Blake refers to God in the fifth stanza, third line “Did he smile his work to see?” with Genesis 2:2 “who ended his work on the sixth day of Creation” when in 1:30 the tiger was one of the many “beasts” created in the “evening and the morning”.

In the videogame Vampyr, the setting is 20th century London during the Spanish flu. The player immediately is placed into the role of early 1900s surgeon and WWI veteran Dr. Jonathan Reid, who upon just beginning to settle in London is killed and turned into a vampire. You are then pulled into dealing with the underside of society: of horror and supernatural like more than one vampire faction. The dichotomy of the game is the push and pull in the creature you have become. Like the tiger, Dr. Reid at his appearance is a normal handsome man as the tiger is natural and beautiful. Yet the surprise is in how both tiger and the doctor are capable of being the most violent and scary of creatures. How can such a nature dwell in one, a creature that is regal and to be honored, and the other a being that is helpful meant to be trusted? In most dialogue, role-playing games, it is encouraged to interact and talk to everyone but in Vampyr you are a character that is know a predator; a being higher on the food chain than others, who has a natural instinct and need to feed and gain power from it. This option of cutting of such interacting experience, which can possibly skip unknown narratives, is a good example of internal conflict not unlike in William Blake’s The Tyger.

Anyone can agree that a tiger is amazing, both amazingly magnificent and amazingly dangerous. It can also be considered that a vampire in comparison can be normal and abominable. William Blake was a poet worth his renown, yet at his time was not publicly known for there were other more noted authors, like Wordsworth and Coleridge, around. After his death however, did is publicity blossom for other writers would tribute to him and make him known. Vampyr, like The Tyger, is a work that can pull at one’s moral core. As Dr. Reid says in a game trailer “My life has become a waking nightmare. I did not choose the thing I’ve become, but I can choose the lives I now take. Cursed be the choice”. It is this irony in The Tyger and Vampyr, that properly shows the struggle of such existence of the two creatures in both these works. (Vampyr art is owned by Kme on deviantart)
