'We've had severe injuries': Cape Breton care home staff rally against workplace violence
Front-line staff and union supporters demonstrated Tuesday outside Breton Ability Centre in Sydney River, N.S.
The rally was organized by CUPE 3513, which represents nearly 300 members who work at the home for adults living with special needs.
They wanted to voice their concerns about what they say has been a failure to address increasing workplace violence.
"Over the past while, we've had sexual assaults, assaults with weapons. We've had severe injuries,” said CUPE local president Karen McMullen.
Breton Ability Centre's CEO didn't deny there has been an increase in physical aggression but said it isn't fair to paint all residents with the same brush.
"This is stigmatizing everyone who lives at Breton Ability Centre, unfortunately,” said Harman Singh.
Singh admits there has been an increase in the complexity of client support needs, which has made the work environment more challenging.
She added that mitigation strategies to try to make things safer for staff and residents are underway.
"I would say that our hearts go out to them, and we are doing everything we can to prevent workplace injuries,” said Singh.
Back at the picket line, workers were also concerned about having enough staff and resources for when residents are moved out of institutional living, into community-based settings.
"[We are here] to ask the Department of Community Services for a meeting, and to come in and talk about what can we do together collectively,” said CUPE national representative Kathy MacLeod.
Singh said she, too, would welcome an open discussion.
"Staff safety, resident rights, let’s sit together,” she said.
Nova Scotia’s Department of Community Services told CTV Atlantic in an email it has regular discussions with Breton Ability Centre about their needs, including staffing.
The department added it would continue to work with facility management to ensure staff and client safety and address staff concerns.

The Freedman Jazz Fellowships Finalists Media Release.
After a search for Australia's most promising young jazz artist, The Music Trust’s 2020 Freedman Jazz Fellowship finalists have been announced today from a list of 18 nominees from across the nation. This year, the distinguished judges comprised Mike Nock, Chris Cody and Laurence Pike, who are all accomplished musicians, composers and educators. The judges made the decision to extend the number this year to include a fourth finalist.
Judges Comments:
Mike Nock:
“This year’s Freedman Jazz Fellowship submissions were the strongest and most conceptually varied so far. It augurs well for the future of jazz - let a thousand flowers bloom."
Chris Cody:
"The finalists this year show a very high degree of proficiency as well as courage and ambition in their music, with a lot of thought given to the projects and music. The nominated candidates this year demonstrated very diverse styles of jazz from electric ambient to abstract acoustic, from free improvisation to through-composed music, from solo to large ensemble."
Laurence Pike:
'This year's field has proven to be one of the most musically diverse in the fellowship's history, covering everything from electronic-informed drone music to large ensemble improvisation, showing the essence of jazz in Australia continues to transcend notions of style. In what has been a difficult year, a focus on community, social consciousness, and a consideration of what is essential to the practice of this music in Australia also appears to have imbued the applications, as the finalists seek to adapt to an ever changing environment. Our final four applicants represent an exciting cross section of this country's creative talent, all worthy of being the recipient of the 2020 Freedman Jazz Fellowship.'
Dr Richard Letts from The Music Trust comments:
'Our finalists include three bass players and one trumpet player. How extraordinary. But every one of them is distinctively marvellous. Their projects are so different and so imaginative. Is it the COVID? – this is an exceptional year.'
THE FREEDMAN JAZZ FELLOWSHIP:
A highlight of the Australian jazz calendar, Freedman Jazz at the Sydney Opera House typically brings together three of the nation's most outstanding young musicians for an exciting finale to decide the Freedman Jazz Fellow. The prestigious award enables the winner to take the next step in their career with a $20,000 cash prize. In this extraordinary year of COVID-19, the much-anticipated gathering of jazz-lovers and media, under the shells of the Sydney Opera House, is not possible. However, the Freedman Jazz Fellowship will prevail by ensuring participation of finalists via video conference in this life-changing event for the eventual winner. Finalist interviews will take place next month, with the winner announced on Thursday 22 of October.
The Jazz Fellowship is funded by the Freedman Foundation, a philanthropic foundation chaired by Laurence Freedman, which assists young Australians in music and visual arts, as well as providing support to medical and scientific programs. Laurence and Kathy Freedman were made a Member of the Order of Australia for service to the community, to medical research, the arts, and to business and investment in Australia.
The Fellowships are managed by The Music Trust and administered by the Sydney Improvised Music Association.
Past winners of the Freedman Jazz Fellowships read like a ‘Who’s Who’ of Australian jazz. They include guitarists Ben Hauptmann and James Muller, saxophonists Julien Wilson, Andrew Robson and Matt Keegan, pianists Andrea Keller, Matt McMahon, Marc Hannaford, Aaron Choulai, Tal Cohen and Novak Manojlovic, trumpeters Nick Garbett and Phil Slater, bassist Christopher Hale, vocalist Kristin Berardi and drummer James McLean.

August 2022 Wrap Up
I’ve been busy catching up on things, so haven’t actually done much reading this month. All I did was finish reading A Paris Year which I started back in July, and I’m starting Persuasion before watching the new Netflix film. But I did absolutely love binge watching Please Like Me.
I did buy the latest books by Matthew Reilly and Kathy Reichs, Cobalt Blue and Cold Cold Bones.
I’m still doing @bookbandit‘s tbrbusterchallenge2022 to get through as many books on my TBR as possible!
Things of mine to check out: quotes, currently reading and just finished book pics!

N.S. woman speaks out after mother shuffled between four hospitals
A Nova Scotia woman says her ailing mother has been shuffled from hospital to hospital due to a lack of beds and doctors.
Kathy Garrison says her 84-year-old mother June MacLeod has been to four hospitals since Saturday after being diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia.
“I think that the health system is really failing,” Garrison says.
MacLeod was first taken to the Cobequid Health Centre in Lower Sackville Saturday night. She needed to be admitted, so she was sent by ambulance to the Halifax Infirmary.
Garrison says she waited for six hours in an emergency room hallway.
“The paramedics were looking after her and there was many paramedics looking after a lot of people,” she says.
MacLeod stayed in an emergency bed Sunday. By Monday, she was one of 21 people admitted to the infirmary who couldn't get a hospital bed.
Rather than keep her in emergency, staff opted to send her to Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital in Musquodoboit Harbour.
“That facility has nurses and they are great. They're taking care of her the best that they can,” Garrison says.
But there are no doctors on site between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Garrison says her mother's condition deteriorated Tuesday night.
“She has COPD, she has heart problems and she has bacterial pneumonia. I think their choices of moving somebody that sick as opposed to a healthier, 20, 30-year-old person, I think was a very bad decision,” she says
Macleod was moved yet again on Thursday to the Dartmouth General.
The Nova Scotia Health Authority says the decision to move patients to other hospitals is complex.
“It's unfortunate that that would happen to somebody, definitely,” says Peter MacDougall, director of health services at the Halifax Infirmary. “The team does sit and have a discussion around what is the right place, or where is the right place, what the care needs are. So those decisions are not made lightly.”
The family says they've been in touch with their MLA Brendan Maguire. He says it's gone all the way to the deputy health minister, who agreed that what happened to June MacLeod made no sense.
The health minister did not grant CTV News an interview on the matter on Thursday.
With files from CTV Atlantic’s Sarah Ritchie.
