DOES A BEAR SNORT IN THE WOODS?
Now playing in the multiplexes:
Tumblr media
Cocaine Bear--This shocker has at least as much right to claim "true story" status for itself as Fargo or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There really was a Cocaine Bear: back in 1985, an American black bear was found dead in the Chattahoochee National Forest in northern Georgia, just south of the Tennessee line. The poor creature had OD'd, having ingested more than 30 kilos of cocaine, valued at tens of millions of dollars.
The stuff had been dropped from an airplane by a smuggler who then died himself in a parachuting mishap. The unfortunate ursine, dubbed "Pablo Eskobear," was stuffed by a taxidermist and ended up on display in a shopping mall in Kentucky, where it reportedly still stands.
The movie, directed by Elizabeth Banks from a script by Jimmy Warden, is set in 1985 and uses some real place names and at least one real person's name (the smuggler's). But it's still a load of gleeful b.s., a highly entertaining sick joke. Unlike the real animal, the movie's bear--arguably the newest addition to the stable of Universal Monsters--turns into a drug-crazed spree killer, mauling and dismembering hikers and park personnel, as well as the drug traffickers that enter the forest in search of the lost product.
Cocaine Bear is as violent and gory as any big-studio movie you're likely to see. But it isn't scary, and isn't meant to be; the splatter is played entirely for gruesomely slapstick laughs. Indeed, the exuberance with which the blood and brains and guts fly is the central recurring and escalating gag.
Except for a single mom (Keri Russell), searching the woods for her daughter and the daughter's friend, most of the major characters are scoundrels or cretins or both, though not necessarily unlikable scoundrels and cretins. All of them are broadly played caricatures, so Banks invites us to leave our empathy at the door, take a cathartic break from compassion and hoot at the horrors which befall them. I indulged, and so did the audience with which I saw the film.
The title character, generated through some reasonably seamless combination of virtual and practical effects, has a guileless personality that contrasts with the bloody mayhem. Indeed, you're more likely to feel for the blameless beast than for most of the humans.
The cast is nonetheless excellent, even if most of them are not employing ten percent of their talent. I've long thought that Russell is one of the more underrated and underutilized lead actresses now in movies. I also don't understand why Alden Ehrenreich hasn't become a bigger deal; he's comically muddled yet sympathetic as an elaborately bereaved drug operative. So is O'Shea Jackson as his weary partner, Aaron Holliday as a dimwit would-be mugger they encounter, and Isiah Whitlock, Jr. as a cranky detective.
The film was one of the last in which the late Ray Liotta appeared. He's in his usual strong form as Ehrenreich's father, the heartless local boss of the drug dealers. It's not a rich enough role to be a worthy swansong, but it's a good performance, and the film is dedicated to him. The great Margo Martindale nails every line and facial expression as a hard-up park ranger trying to get the attention of a naturalist (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). Maybe the best of all are Brooklyn Prince and Christian Convery as the two kids, who get across a genuine affection behind their mild, familiar ragging and posing and their dares of each other. They, along with Russell, offer us somebody to unambiguously root for.
Banks has a lot of fun evoking '80s-movie atmosphere, not only with the costumes and cars and posters and overheard pop songs but with her direction. From the full opening credit sequence to the leisurely camera movement to the driving synthesizer score by Mark Mothersbaugh, the film is as much a throwback to the decade in which it's set as last year's Top Gun: Maverick, and the response to both of those films suggests that maybe today's audiences wouldn't object to a return to that style.

This is a movie Tony’s grandfather would have made about a white woman saving African kids in the slams. I am pretty sure that Tony’s movie will see Kenya through the lens of poverty and colonialism. Tony is not doing anything to help the Black community. The black community does not need a white man whose Grandfather perpetuated black stereotypes in Holliday. The movie will not be a success.
Tony is not his grandfather. And the way I have seen him treat Kerry Washington tells me all I need to know how he treats and respects Black women

                                                             ENTREVISTA*
&. &. BÁSICO
x. Nombre completo: Holliday Erin Conway x. Edad y cumpleaños: 16 de Enero, 31 años. x. Sexualidad: Heterosexual x.
Una canción (su favorita): No good in Goodbye - The Script x.
Y no hubo nada. x.

So I’ve been thinking a lot about the kids in the village. And when I say kids, I mean the babies to the teens, so I’m not thinking of Belle who is in her twenties.
And so I made a list of all of them and their most immediate family members, no cousins because then we would be drowning in Dingles. They are going to be the big characters of the future and the show seems to be diving into the kids more lately. And mainly because I was curious who belonged in what family and how old they were. Stayed mostly with the kids that were currently living in the village, so kids like Molly Sharma are not on this list, since they live elsewhere.
If I did something incorrectly or forgot someone, please let me know.

Ten years ago, Claire Hines lost her unborn child—and her short-term memory—following a heartrending tragedy. With notebooks, calendars, to-do lists, fractured pieces of the past, and her father’s support, Claire makes it through each day, hour by hour, with relative confidence. She also has a close-knit community of friends in the remote Alaskan town where she teaches guitar to the local children. It’s there, in the reminders.
As determined as Claire is to regain all that’s disappeared, she’d prefer to live without some memories of her before life—especially those of her mother, Alice, who abandoned her, and Tate, the ex-boyfriend who broke her heart.
But when Alice and Tate return from the past, there’ll be so much more for Claire to relive. And to discover for the very first time. Through healing, forgiveness, and second chances, Claire may realize that what’s most important might not be re-creating the person she was, but embracing the possibilities of being the person she is.
Suspense

Neena Ryder isn’t a fellow lady of leisure. A life coach with off-the-rack dresses, personal issues, and a husband who hasn’t delivered, she’s anxious to move up in the world. This beautiful new town is a step in the right direction. It’s also making Neena aware of what she doesn’t have. Namely, William. When Neena’s infatuation escalates into obsession, it’s just a matter of eliminating a few obstacles to get the life she wants. The life next door.
As Neena’s secret fixation grows, so does her friendship with Cat. But beneath their cordial interactions is a wealth of temptations, secrets, and toxic jealousy. For both women, the desire for a perfect life can turn perfectly dangerous.
Historical Fiction
Under a Gilded Moon by Joy Jordan-Lake, Pages: 409, Publication Date: 1 December 2020
Tumblr media
Synopsis: From the bestselling author of A Tangled Mercy comes an enthralling novel of secrets, a tumultuous war of ideas, and murder as classes collide in the shadow of Biltmore House.
Biltmore House, a palatial mansion being built by the Vanderbilts, American “royalty,” is in its final stages of construction in North Carolina. The country’s grandest example of privilege, it symbolizes the aspirations of its owner and the dreams of a girl, just as driven, who lives in its shadow.
Kerry MacGregor’s future is derailed when, after two years in college in New York City, family obligations call her home to the beautiful Appalachians. She is determined to distance herself from the opulence she sees rising in the Blue Ridge Mountains, however close its reach. Her family’s land is among the last pieces required to complete the Biltmore Estate. But something more powerful than an ambitious Vanderbilt heir could change Kerry’s fate as, one by one, more outsiders descend on the changing landscape—a fugitive from Sicily, a reporter chasing a groundbreaking story, a debutante tainted by scandal, and a conservationist prepared to put anyone at risk to stoke the resentment of the locals.
As Kerry finds herself caught in a war between wealth and poverty, innocence and corruption, she must navigate not only her own pride and desperation to survive but also the temptations of fortune and the men who control it.
Memoir
Jew(ish) by Matt Greene, Pages: 199, Publication Date: 1 December 2020
Tumblr media
Synopsis: What does it mean to be Jew(ish) in 2020? Caught between tradition and modernity, between a Jewish family and a non-Jewish son, Matt Greene ponders the big questions concerning identity, religion, family and Seinfeld.
When his son was born to a non-Jewish mother, Matt began to consider the upbringing he’d put behind him—the sense of not belonging, the forbidden foods, the holidays that felt more like punishments. There are more types of Jew than there are bagel fillings, and for every two there are three opinions. But if you’re not a black-hatted frummer, if you’re allergic to groups, if you observe but don’t believe, or you don’t observe at all, does that make you less Jewish?
In this wide-ranging series of essays, at turns irreverent, insightful, urgent and iconoclastic, Matt considers what might loosely be termed ‘the modern Jewish experience’, and asks what it means to be anything in a world obsessed with the self and the other.
Domestic Suspense
Open House by Katie Sise, Pages: 255, Publication Date: 1 December 2020
Tumblr media
Synopsis: A missing young woman, ten years gone. A town still held in the grip of an unsolved mystery. A breathtaking novel of psychological suspense by the bestselling author of We Were Mothers.
A decade ago in upstate New York, art student Emma McCullough walked into the woods and was never seen again. It’s a mystery that still haunts her bucolic university town and her broken family, especially her sister, Haley, whose need for closure has become an obsession. But now, finally, the first piece of evidence in the vanishing has been found: Emma’s bracelet, lodged in a frozen piece of earth at the bottom of a gorge. For Emma’s three best college friends, for a beloved former teacher, and for Haley, the chilling trinket is more than a clue in a resurrected cold case. It’s a trigger.
Then a woman Tis attacked during an open house, and the connections between the two crimes, ten winters apart, begin to surface. So do the secrets that run as deep and dark as the currents in this quiet river town.
Biographical Fiction
The Empress by Laura Martinez-Belli, Translator Simon Bruni, Pages: 402, Publication Date: 1 December 2020
Tumblr media
Synopsis: From a bestselling author in Mexico comes her English-language debut—an enthralling historical novel about the tragic reign of Empress Carlota of Mexico.
It’s 1863. Napoleon III has installed a foreign monarch in Mexico to squash the current regime. Maximilian von Habsburg of Austria accepts the emperor’s crown. But it is his wife, the brilliant and ambitious Princess Charlotte, who throws herself passionately into the role. Known to the people as Empress Carlota, she rules deftly from behind the scenes while her husband contents himself with philandering and decorating the palace.
But Carlota bears a guilty secret. Trapped in a loveless marriage, she’s thrown herself into a reckless affair. Desire has blinded Carlota to its consequences, for it has left her vulnerable to her sole trusted confidante. Carlota’s devious lady-in-waiting has political beliefs of her own—and they are strong enough to cause her to betray the empress and join a plot to depose her from the throne. As Carlota grows increasingly, maddeningly defenseless, both her own fate and that of the empire are at stake.
A sweeping historical novel of forbidden love, dangerous secrets, courtly intrigue, and treachery, The Empress passionately reimagines the tragic romance and ill-fated reign of the most unforgettable royal couple of nineteenth-century Europe during the last throes of the Second Empire.

It isn’t long before the rest of the neighborhood wakes its sleepy head—and the other kids make their way to the park, scattering all of Sofia’s beautiful silence. But with the help of a new young friend, Sofia is ready to show everyone what a snow dancer can do on a perfect day like this. With lyrical language and gorgeous art, this book sparkles with all the joy and beauty of a snow day.

Newly built apartments sadly have a reputation for often being a little uninspiring, so when interior designer Jono Fleming set out apartment hunting in inner-city Sydney, he began by researching multi-residential projects by architecture firms he admired. ‘I admittedly was looking specifically at ‘designer’ apartments,’ Jono says. ‘I wanted to know I was investing in quality, and the firms I was familiar with would come with this guarantee.’
Jono’s strategy worked, leading him to discover a new project by SJB in Waterloo. ‘I had never seen a new build with so much character, but also blank enough for me to bring my own aesthetic in,’ he says. Even though the building was entirely new, the apartments contained design elements normally only found in decades old homes. ‘Beautiful detailed architraves, herringbone floors, and an exposed painted brick wall made the entire space feel like it had some history to it,’ says Jono. ‘It was the attention to detail and the way the apartments were finished that really drew me in.’
Since purchasing the property in 2015, Jono’s home has evolved into a richly layered, character-filled space. To offset the neutral palette of the apartment bones, Jono has introduced colour through art, accessories and furniture, particularly in the living room. The hero of this space is of course the army green sofa by HK Living from House Of Orange, which is surrounded by an evolving gallery wall and the ‘world’s healthiest devil’s ivy.’ ‘This plant just keeps growing and softens the entire space,’ Jono says. ‘Contrasted against the bricks and the industrial black paned windows, the ivy has become my favourite thing in the entire home. I have no idea what I’m going to do if I were to ever move.’
The nature of Jono’s work as a designer and stylist means he’s constantly sourcing new props for styling, many of which inevitably end up in his personal collection. While previously these items were scattered across the apartment, he’s now installed a wall of shelves in the study, where all his new acquisitions and styling props are organised by colour.
Jono’s apartment shows that finding your own home styling aesthetic can take time, even for the professionals! ‘It was originally a very, dare I say, ‘scandi’ vibe with lots of neutrals, pops of blush and a reindeer hide’, he recalls. These days, Jono calls himself a ‘curated maximalist’ with a space that’s a much better reflection of his personality and style.
Check out Jono’s amazing podcast, House Of Style, featuring conversations with prominent Australian design figures hosted alongside stylist Kerri Ann Jones…. including an episode featuring me (Lucy!)

books i read in 2017
this year has been an absolute rollercoaster in more ways than one. i was firmly back in the world of academia and left with very little time to read as a result, especially compared to 2016 when i had a lot of time on my hands, especially in the first half of the year.
i spent most of the year in a reading slump, especially towards the end. i initially set my reading challenge on goodreads to 72, to beat last years achievement of 71, but i ended up reducing this to 60. ultimately, i guess i cheated a little bit at the final hurdle by including a short story, just to complete the challenge and get it out of the way.
as well as a reading slump, i also read more indulgently - and by that i mean i read more romance ebooks than i have since my late teens. when i first began doing goodreads challenges, i did so to try and encourage myself to read more widely, especially out of my comfort zone, but this year i definitely did less of that and i think it was a good thing. i also put less pressure on myself to finish books; my currently reading on goodreads is full of things i never got round to finishing. maybe next year i will manage it.
overall, this year was the one i’ve least enjoyed since doing the reading challenges because of the pressure i put on myself. i found myself choosing shorter books, disregarding any that would be hard-going (with a few exceptions), and that’s not how i want to read. so this year, i’m going to use the challenge function to set my goal at 1. that way i will definitely beat my goal and be able to neatly keep track of things.
my absolute favourite book this year was the hating game by sally thorne, mainly because it cheered me up a lot and i reread it 4 times this year.
i also adored the murder most unladylike series by robin stevens, which were definitely the best series i’ve read in a long while. they were solid mystery stories and a lot of fun, and i can’t wait for the next one to come out.
i also want to give a special mention to i found you by lisa jewell for being one of the most surprising thriller novels i’ve read in a long time. it was nothing like i expected, and was incredibly captivating; it managed to be lighter in tone than i was used to, but completely threw me with it’s sudden change in direction plot-wise.
so, here are all of the books i read in 2017. my favourites are in bold, with my absolute favourite italicised as well, rereads ware in italics, and any with an * beside them were read for academic purposes.
