#OTD in Irish History | 6 February:
797 – Death of High King of Ireland, Donnchad mac Domnaill, called Donnchad Midi. His father, Domnall Midi, had been the first Uí Néill High King from the south-central Clann Cholmáin based in modern Co Westmeath and western Co Meath. 1685 – Coronation of King James II. King James II of England when he was Duke of York by English painter John Michael Wright.
He was the spare who became king since his eldest brother Charles didn’t have any legitimate children (but had tons of illegitimate children), but was kicked off the throne by his daughter Mary and son-in-law/nephew William for his Catholicism and not reading his subjects’ minds.

The Twelfth
Tumblr media
Source: The Guardian
Today is The Twelfth in Ulster and parts of Scotland when the Orange Order, which was founded in 1795, march through towns and cities to commemorate the victory of the Protestant William of Orange over the Catholic King James II at the Battle of Boyne in 1690. The victory ensured the success of the 1688 Glorious Revolution in the United Kingdom and the deposition of James. It also ensured the continuance of the Protestant ascendancy in Ulster and the domination of its Catholic minority which continued at least until the 1999 Good Friday Agreement. As a result, the Orange Order marches have been flashpoints for political tension and sectarian conflict each year.
A slightly more benign commemoration of the Boyne is the Sham Fight which takes place on or about the 12th at Scarva, near Portadown in County Down. Scarva was where William camped the night before the battle and each year after an Orange parade, the battle is re-staged as a fight between two horsemen, one decked out as William and the other as King James. William (known by Ulster Protestants as “King Billy”) of course wins every time.

King George VI by Herbert James Gunn (1957)
Herbert James Gunn: ‘The King sat for me and I managed to finish his head before he died. I had to stop work on it but it was a commissioned portrait and last year I was being pressed for it so I borrowed the Queen’s Garter robes and put them on a dummy.
There was trouble about the hands - so as mine were similar I painted them.
The King always wore a gold signet ring on his left little finger, so I copied this from my previous portraits of him.’
Gunn also recalled that the King was displeased with his first rough sketch: ‘His Majesty looked at it and said - “Gunn, I don’t stand like that, I’m not so snooty. Change it.”’
- The News Chronicle (November 21, 1957)

Can't wait to watch this!!! 😀 Nikolaj will play William the Conqueror while James is playing Harold II, the Earl of Wessex. It'll start filming next year to air on the BBC in the UK and possibly Paramount+ in the US (though it says Paramount is selling it even here in the US so it might go to a different streamer/network instead). More cast will be announced soon too.
ETA: Adding on from James' Instagram post this is the first time this part of history and the Battle of Hastings has been told to this scale. It's an 8 episode miniseries too.

Cannom (Headcanon Rough Draft)
Roland knocks on Cedric's door with his foot. He calls out to Cedric, "Cedric, come quick!"
Cedric opens the door in a panic from Roland's tone of voice; had something happened?
Cedric looks to see Roland holding a baby James in his arms.
Roland had the most sweetest of smiles, "Cedric, you will not believe what James just said!"
Cedric was caught off guard from the shift from urgency to delight from him. And as if he didn't know anything about believing, but that was another story.
"What James said?-" Cedric now realized, "He's said his first words?!"
"Yes!! Isn't that amazing? Look look, watch this!" Roland held baby James up to his own face; James giggled at how goofy his father looked.
"Boom goes the.."
Baby James chimed in, waving his arms up, "Cannom!"
Roland let out a cheerful laugh, "That's right son, cannom!" Roland raised James up playfully in celebration of his first word: Cannom.
Cedric looked a bit confused. Was Roland also pronouncing it as 'Cannom?' "Your Majesty, I believe he pronounced cannon the wrong way."
"I know, but it's his first word after all."
"So, shouldn't you be saying it the correct way so he learns how to pronounce it correctly?"
"Oh, I didn't think about it that way. Thank you Cedric," Roland went back to his son, "That's right, it's a cannon. Boom goes the-"
"Cannom!" Both Roland and Baby James were laughing from their little moment together.
Cedric couldn't help but wish he had that kind of father.

#OTD in 1690 – Siege of Limerick commences when William of Orange encamps just outside the walls of the old city, with an army of about 26,000; the Irish defenders were similar in number though not nearly as well armed.
The Williamite War (1689-1691) did not go well for the Jacobites. Crushing defeats of troops supporting King James II at the Siege of Derry in December 1688 and the Battle of the Boyne on 1 July 1690 had forced the Jacobites to retreat west to Limerick and Galway. William of Orange, at the head of the Williamite army pursued them, reaching the city of Limerick on this date in 1690. The Jacobites,…
