Summary: The sand underneath his hands was cold. The early morning breeze blowing across his face was cold. And he was sure that if he dipped his feet into the water gently lapping at the shore, that would be cold too. But Kisame didn’t really mind it, having grown up on the edge of a colder ocean. He just leaned back, putting more weight on his hands, and glanced over at their cabin. The sun had just barely risen and all of the windows were dark, making it almost seem like the cabin was asleep. Kisame was sure that both Itachi and Shisui were still asleep inside of it and wished he was there too, curled up in bed with his partners. But he had been dragged out of bed by a half-remembered promise.   

It's Kisame's fortieth birthday, and he's not quite sure how he feels about it.

The Narrative Roles of Haruno Sakura (Preview)

Haruno Sakura is a civilian.

Daughter of career genin Kisashi and Mebuki Haruno, a bookish, bright girl determined to do her parents, her friends, her village proud and prove everyone who said she would never be anything more wrong.

She is a popular girl, for a given value of popular. She is more a hanger-on than anything else, hanging out with people who are friends with her friend. She doubts any of them would give her the time of day if she wasn’t bffs for life with Ino.

She is the “best friend” character in the romance novels she and Ino love to read, the sidekick who cheers on the heroine from the sidelines, fated to end up with someone quirky out of convenience, to tie up loose ends.

She loves Ino. She really, truly does. The girl was the first to look at her and see past a crushed self-image and forehead to hide, the first to tell Sakura to dare to be more than the role others consigned her to.

Haruno Sakura looks in the mirror and tries to be happy with being the sidekick.

She loves Uchiha Sasuke with all the force her being can muster.

He’s smart and handsome and serious and everything a romance hero should be.

She’s upset when she learns the rest of the girls in their class claim to love him too, because that means she’s got to work harder than she’s ever worked before, got to surpass them all, to be worthy of his attention.

She’s horrified when Ino says she likes him, because she knows can never surpass Ino. The sidekick never steals the hero away from the heroine, and what are Ino-chan and Sasuke-kun if not the perfect romance novel couple?

It stings all the more when one of the few girls who hasn’t professed her affection for Sasuke somehow gets all his attention.

Mayu acts like she barely tolerates Sasuke, always being rude and insulting towards him, mocking his every decision. And yet she’s the one he invites over to his house, she’s the one whose homemade food he eats, she’s the one he works hard to impress with his own cooking.

It’s not fair. Sasuke should at least be with someone who likes him, and Mayu doesn’t even seem to know what she’s doing, doesn’t seem to care.

It’s not fair because Sakura likes Mayu.

She taught Sakura how to make jam after punching Ami in the face for her, tells stories of pirates and adventure and fearsome women that make Sakura want, brings dango just to trade it to Sakura at lunchtime because she knows Sakura loves it.

The rival who schemes to keep the heroine and hero apart should be evil and foul, like Ami.

Making it someone like Mayu is just too cruel.

Okay so I've had this soulmark au thingy stuck in my head since my mind, running through multiple ideas at once like usual, accidentally crossed wires on "Shisui" and "soulmates"

Fair warning this is a bit long so uh,, sorry lmao

So! Au where the most of the shinobi population and a portion of the civilian population started developing what they called soulmarks because the higher entities got really tired of everyone killing everyone like idiots-

these soulmarks seem to form on your skin (Haven't decided what they look like) after you meet someone you can truly trust to have your back. Since soulmarks are about trust, loyalty, etc they have nothing to do with any romantic feelings (though they're probably romanticized in media). It is very common to have multiple soulmarks, and they aren't limited to just humans! Those with summons/animal companions they work with almost always get soulmarks to represent their animal partner(s) due to their extreme loyalty.

Soulmarks don't tend to form immediately after meeting but over time- though some get suspicious after a year markless. Sometimes people don't fit together as well as they think, sometimes they change and get along after time, sometimes one of them just can't bring themself to trust the other yet, etc. There's many reasons and cases of those who you think you should have a mark for not forming- while a clear reason is unknown, it quickly became a death/betrayal omen in the more superstitious shinobi communities.

Some extra info- Academy kids soulmarks with their classmates are often taken into consideration for team formations. If the person who's soulmark is in danger, it feels like pins and needles under your skin. If they feel extreme emotions, it either heats up or goes cold. Death causes soulmarks to darken and fade, but soulmarks only truly disappear when you can no longer trust them at all- often followed by betrayal. Soulmarks can be onesided- though more often in the case of one of them being very young (ex: siblings).

Now with all of that, some ideas-

• Kakashi's first soulmarks were his ninken

• Tenzo's first soulmark was Kakashi, i think it kind of freaked him out

• Shisui and Itachi formed soulmarks for each other as soon as they met, despite Itachi being so very young

• Shisui has soulmarks with his Yamanaka family despite refusing to realize he was practically adopted

• Shisui has soulmarks for his summons, which is a very big matter of pride for them

• Kakashi never formed soulmarks with his childhood team

• Gai has shed tears of joy, multiple times, for every soulmark he has

• Shisui and Kisame formed soulmarks for each other

• Kisame got a soulmark for Samehada and Shisui lost his mind when he found out because wtf

• at least one member of Squad Two has unknowingly formed a onesided soulmark with Naruto

• Genma has a habit of checking his soulmarks multiple times a day

• Raidou is fascinated by soulmarks and wants to study them

• Kagami never had a soulmark for Danzo, Sarutobi did and refuses to acknowledge what it means now it's gone

And now the one idea that started it all ✨

• Squad Two not having a soulmark for Shisui, possibly onesided where Shisui has theirs, until right before Danzo betrays him :)

Two main ways you could take this- Shisui somehow surviving the first attempt bc everyone who has his soulmark is pretty much alerted to that he's in danger

Or in hope au style, Shisui doesn't survive and wakes up in the past only for the others to get his soulmark and getting almost phantom sensations bc he's reacting to a danger that technically hasn't happened- maybe even his mark being unnaturally darker than it should be..

Also I'd just love to see how the others would react to having a soulmark from Shisui during his long mission bc it seems like it just kept getting worse for him LMAO

"Can you tell me again why we're here?" Looking around the small shop, Kisame seems reluctant to move past the entrance, his body big enough to block it almost completely. Shisui just smiles at him, his left eye crinkling with delight and amusement while the bandages on the right side of his face moves accordingly to his expressions. "I told you already, Ki. We're here to buy flowers." Kisame huffs a bit at the nickname, by now almost used by it. "And why we're buying flowers, exactly?"

The woman behind the counter seems unfazed by them, and Shisui adjusts the big hat on his head to better see her, smiling. "It's for a small celebration." He says, but he's looking at her and not at his teammate. "Can you show me your selection?" And they stays in the shop for nearly an hour, and when they finally leave Kisame seems ready to strangle Shisui, but the boy merely takes him by the hand to drag him somewhere, flowers carefully kept in his free hand.

"What are you celebrating?" Kisame asks after a while, whatching with almost amusement as Shisui turns left and right in the streets, until they're outside the village and on a green cliff looking at the ocean. Peaceful, quiet and calm. "You shouldn't even ask!" Shisui says, shoving the flowers against Kisame's chest. "It's the third year you forget, you know. Today's the day we became teammates!" A small, almost invisible blue-ish hue appears on Kisame's cheeks, and he doesn't know if it's because of Shisui or because he's embarassed that he forgot. Shisui just grins, amused. "Next year I want a gift, just so you know." And there's more behind those words. It's not just the anniversary, it's an unspoken promise to survive long enough to see another year pass. Together. Kisame finds that he doesn't really find the Uchiha as annoying as he thought at first.

Not me reading about the whole Kisame-Shisui thing "He's from Konoha but he's so Kiri"/"He's from Kiri but he's so Konohan" and imagining some sort of Hogwarts AU where Shisui is in Hufflepuff and Kisame in Slytherin and they become friends almost by accident and after a while Shisui starts seeing so much loyalty and sense of justice (the whole Kisame thing is that he values truth above almost everything else, I mean...) usually associated with Hufflepuff in Kisame while Kisame starts seeing a more ambitious and resourcefulness side of Shisui that is usually associated with Slytherin

(And also ofc Slytherin/Hufflepuff always makes the best pairing, both platonic and romantic)

And then kisame finds himself paired with shisui in a group protect in their DADA OWL/5th year class, identifying curses on an artefact as half of their final project's grade, and-

Shisui isn't some angel. He knows far too much about casting dark magic, he manipulates the staff like a pro, there's a devilish gleam in his eyes and his famous dimpled grin can tug into a devastating smirk. He is alarmingly ambitious and resourceful.

Kisame isn't a monster. He is diligent with his work and sensitive to those around him as well as with magic, he has a strong moral compass and a spine of steel, his fierce gaze can soften with fondness and his mouth can quirk with amusement. He is disarmingly truthful and loyal.

i have one setting so sophie is kisame BUT it's like, early him so he's not super super buff and the 'find me in the future' means that shisui is searching for a ridiculously buff shark dude instead of this normal looking dude who gets cursed (the sophie curse) to be a shark and then copes with it by bodybuilding

it's also even funnier because Shisui only glimpsed the huge shark guy, right? Right after he lost his fucking normal sight? So he's like

Shisui: are you sure??? How big???

Obito, who also had new additions to his vision and literally no sense of proportion because he only fell to earth like thirty seconds beforehand: Real Big, Chunky???

And because Howl's whole rumour is that he steals young women and 'cuts out their hearts' (both a heartbreaker and no doubt rumors that he's missing his own) SHISUI'S rumour is that he's able to... steal strength, gaze into souls?

So what Shisui does with all his 'mind-fuckery/soul-stealing' is tracking down the strongest men in towns - he's looking for a warrior after all - and he literally studies their magic and soul for a bit, trying to find something to spark recognition. Other people can kinda feel it? So they think he's Big Evil Mysterious.

Shisui couldn't actually SEE that Kisame had been turned into a shark-monster and Obito was similarly coping with new awareness, so he's not just looking for blue people 🤣🤡

Then, he sees Kisame, a seemingly normal blacksmith's apprentice with a spark of something in his soul, getting hassled by soldiers and recognises the particular feel of Kisame's emotions!!! That soul!! At last!! ✨✨✨✨✨

But he's obviously come too early, so Shisui intervenes and sends the soldiers off and then flies Kisame with him back to the forge when Danzo's ROOT lackies try to attack. Shisui tells himself he'll keep an eye (lol) but wait.... and then-!

Danzo curses Kisame, thinking that he must be the "weapon" Shisui has been searching for, thinking that for as long as Danzo's been hunting Shisui for his eyes... Shisui has been searching for a warrior to kill Danzo in return. So, he curses Kisame into a monster so that he's unable to ever be mistaken, to ever pass in human society, to ever gain power against Danzo. The monster is tied to Kisame's emotions, if he tries to kill Danzo then he'll become more monstrous and, whilst strong, easier to out-manoeuver.

And Danzo's not wrong, Kisame is almost killed when Swordsmen arrive at the forge and see it torn to shreds, Kisame seemingly killed and a monster in the middle.... So Kisame flees to the wilderness by swimming upstream in the rivers and, one day, comes across the Moving Castle as it crosses the water. He's been getting bigger and buffer this whole time btw~

Like Sophie's curse is related to her rejecting/disbelieving herself, Kisame's curse is also related to, hm, his feelings of self worth and anger. When Kisame feels particularly monstrous or loses his temper, he becomes less human, more monster, and loses a lot of higher thought. The first time was when Danzo attacked and he trashed the forge and made everyone think the human him had been, like, eaten by the monster. Shisui also questions Kisame a lot, getting to know him and also having insight into his magic/soul, and Kisame's feeling both very defensive and very wounded so lashes back at him.

Ino wants them to stop knocking over her potions >:(

As the story progresses, however, Kisame starts to realise that his monstrous self is only a physical manifestation of his self disgust and rage. As he learns to accept himself, his new strength, and his growing feelings for Shisui, his features settle. He'll never lose the blue skin and teeth and gills etc etc, but it all comes together to form a new him.

Shisui is just watching all this with (lol) heart eyes like he deffo fell for Kisame the moment he saw him again but watching this journey of self has been a TRIP

Shisui, breathless and high-key thirsty: hey can you bench me

Kisame, twice the size of every other human and feeling the disconnect: *internally* only a blind weirdo could say this shit, if I fix his deal with Obito then he's gonna fucking know and-

Kisame, out loud: STOP MOCKING ME

Kisame is rapidly gaining appreciation for Shisui, who he thought was once a Boogeyman story and then, when he actually met him, a far too cheerful blind pretty-boy with Ino as his bratty tag-on... and Obito is a cackling menace that Kisame low-key becomes besties with

Obito is like-

Kisame: *becoming more Shark Bamf Kisame every day, working out and fixing up Shisui's place because he's handy, Shisui's blind + distracted and Ino is the messy one lol*

Somehow we gotta have Shisui's magic-monster-crow form crashing into the water, nearly drowning, Kisame swimming like a shark BAMF to drag him out and get Obito to return his eyes

(Shisui was scared of being alone in his power, so when he caught Obito and made a contract with him, it was so that they'd both live and work together. Now, however, Shisui needs his eyes back because he's falling too much into his magic, forgetting how to just be himself, and Obito's only worsening his condition.)

Now I'm thinking about Shisui blinking his eyes open for the first time since he was a child (the two kinds of vision combine) and seeing Kisame bent over him, prepared for Shisui to scream and reject him, only for Shisui to beam and say that Kisame looks like the sky with his flawless blue skin and the white lines of his markings, his hair blue hair and the glowing sunlight in his gold eyes-!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Shisui, blinking the most beautiful eyes in the world and finally revealing his whole gorgeous face without the blindfold: 🥺 am I ❤️‍🔥 in heaven? 😍
