Might I please ask if you have an opinion of DRACULA? (Either the novel itself or the adaptations); having read both this novel and FRANKENSTEIN, I'm tempted to agree with the reviewer who wrote that one of these is a Classic and the other is actually Fun to read ... (-;
Tumblr media
(Art by Cinemamind)
I completely understand the sentiment of "one's a classic and the other's fun to read" and I don't necessarily disagree with it. I don't read Frankenstein for fun, I read it because it's the book closest to me and it's heartbreaking to think about and it's got one of my favorite characters ever in it and it's got a stake in my soul I gotta renew every year. Dracula, however? Dracula is a blast and it boggles the mind as to how every adaptation can be so crushingly lesser in nearly every aspect. My hardcover edition with annotations is one of my most prized possessions.
It's interesting that people tend to talk about Frankenstein and Dracula like Frankenstein was cutting edge sci-fi while Dracula was archaic and folkloric, when it's really the other way around. Frankenstein is the story of an arrogant dipshit rejecting modern science and thinking to unearth outdated knowledge soon blossoming into a vicious cycle of savagery, where as Dracula is the story of an ancient predator adapting and trying to take over current society and fought by a ragtag team of upstanding citizens using modern tactics to stave him off and eventually fight him, desperately struggling to stay ahead of the curve as he wisens to their tactics.
This book was really ahead of it's time in so many ways. I could easily see excerpts of it, particularly the Demeter journals and Renfield's story, taking off as internet creepypastas or found footage horror films. Dracula's a story about a group of characters playing detective as they update their blog entries about the coming of an initially incomprehensible horror taking over their lives. It's a story that could work regardless of Victorian or vampire trappings, and we know this because Blair Witch Project and Marble Hornets are some of the biggest horror successes of the past decades, all of which follow the same general idea, except in Dracula, they don't just discover the true nature of the horror, they also start fighting back and ultimately destroy it.
Dracula's obviously a great villain, that goes without saying. I don't actually tend to take Dracula seriously much of the time because I'm very fond of comedy takes on Dracula and vampires, but that doesn't at all diminish his impact in the original book. He's barely in the novel for much of it which makes his every appearence Count, and the atmosphere as well as the many, many forms he can show up or be suggested at really help solidify what an incredible presence he can be.
He's the strange ruler in a foreign country, he's the kooky old man with weird customs, he's the creepy house owner tormenting a hapless guest, he's a barbarian who lives in nostalgia. He's the wind on your window, a dog on the street, a bat in your windshield, a storm on your ship. He's a predator in every way possible, he's a handsome aristocrat, he's a tragic victim of his own monstrous nature, he's a demon who threatens to consume all mankind, he's the fucker who assaulted your loved one and has to go down hard by machete right now.
Even if we just threw out the 124 years of Dracula's history out, we'd still have enough material in the book not just for a great villain, but dozens of great villains and characters who could take just about any of these traits and run with them. And still, the thing that really, really stuck out to me about Dracula wasn't him, it was the other characters
Tumblr media
Art by Kiwi
Dracula's cast is so, so underrated, so unfortunately sidelined as a result of adaptations that only care about The Count and try to give him all the dramatic weight and characterization and sideline all the other characters as merely bit players. Stories that twist Jonathan into a useless fop or an active jerk on the idea that he's the "boring" one, that diminish Renfield's story into just being a hapless and insane goon of Dracula, that make Van Helsing the only character who's even capable of putting up a fight and make him a generic badass, that completely neglect Quincy Morris even though he's great and everyone who discovers him is aghast at discovering "holy shit there's a COWBOY in Dracula?" like yes, there is, and he's incredible and everyone should love him and everyone WOULD love him if only the adaptations remembered he exists.
Adaptations that completely sideline Mina when, and I can't stress this enough, she is the most competent character in the book, one of the greatest pop culture detectives, a wonderful and compassionate and incredibly strong and intelligent character and the main reason why they even managed to win against the Count in the first place, and arguably the closest thing the book even has to a protagonist or hero. I'm not gonna go too into it here but, even putting aside the sheer awfulness of adaptations that try and force a romance between The Count and Mina, seriously fuck off with that, why is it that pretty much every "official" adaptation has had considerably less feminist interpretations of Mina than the source material written in the 1880s? It's a complete travesty (and yes, I'm including LOEG Mina in this, anyone who likes the book and character could have done that concept better)
I enjoy aspects of Dracula adaptations, mostly regarding certain actors's takes on the characters like Bela Lugosi (the only saving grace of that movie, honestly, but rightfully considered the iconic performance), or Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. I very much enjoy the Dracula adaptation Orson Welles did because it at least tried to stay faithful to the book. But regardless of their individual quality, I don't have much to say about Dracula adaptations that try to adapt the book other than "WHY in christ aren't you just sticking to what's in the book? Do you not see how GREAT it is, all the great things about it that are just waiting to be rediscovered and loved by new audiences? STOP WHATEVER IT IS YOU'RE DOING WITH MINA FOR THE LOVE OF GOD-"
Tumblr media
So yeah I definitely got thoughts on Dracula. Utterly adore the book but thinking about how much of it's greatness has been lost in the adaptations kinda makes me a little angry. Of course, this doesn't extend to adaptations that tell different stories or just put Dracula into existing stories or reinterpret it. I love Nosferatu and Castlevania Dracula and Hellsing Dracula and Billy & Mandy Dracula and Sesame Street Dracula. Dracula's basically become a sub-category of monster in it's own right and there's no such think as too many monsters, or too many Draculas
I'm very glad that Dracula's public domain because it means not only can he just show up anywhere, but it also means that just about anyone can pen their own Dracula stories. Still, it would be nice if the other great characters of Dracula got brought along for the ride on a couple of those.

Cherry, banana and kiwi
Cherry: can you play any musical instruments or can you sing?
I used to play bass guitar but I haven't touched it for 3 years. It was really fun though and honestly, the bass has such an amazing sound it's still my favourite instrument. I definitely can not sing though.
Banana: favourite horror movies?
I'm not a big fan of horror movies but we used to watch them with my class in high school. I really liked Sinister. And I like the old Dracula movies purely for the aesthetics, same with Nosferatu.
Kiwi: what's something that fascinates you?
Uh, there are a lot of things... Okay here's 3 of them:
1. Rivals with sexual tension, makes me lose my mind tbh
2. Tall people, like people over 190cm
3. Biological signals as a whole

Dusty snip
[Charlie] watched [Kiwi] go, standing there, arms crossed as he leaned against the wall. Watched her press the button to unlock his car — she’d never had a remote lock before. Watched her open the door. Watched her pause, and look up. He frowned, and craned his neck, but he couldn’t what she could see. Not from his position. On the edge of the roof sat Kaminsky’s eagle. It was watching her too. For a moment, the puzzled frown Charlie shot her made her want to let him know. But there was no point, was there? It was Kaminsky’s bird, not his. If it flew away, she doubted Charlie’d give a shit. So instead, she lowered herself into the car and shut the door. As she turned the keys in the ignition, she saw the shadow of the bird taking flight on the asphalt, cast by the light of the moon.

Julian: Punch him in the stomach. Then, when he doubles over in pain, kiss him.
Kiwi: Tackle him.

I ve only read a select few fics of yours. but I absolutely love Kiwi an I’m curious what other clan they’d thrive in??
Kiwi would probably do well as a Ravnos, as she's always driving around and shit for Dove and is already one hell of an Obfuscator (Obfuscater?). So she's sneaky, and she moves around a lot.

Elisa and Kiwi were Embraced within weeks of each other. Modian was basically the grandparent staying with the parents to help them with their newborn, but generally thinking everything would be fine because they're both responsible vampires so aside from a few bumps he's sure they should have a handle on it.
Yeah no that went to hell in basically five minutes
Dove: SIRE I PUT MY CHILDE IN THE OTHER ROOM WHILE SHE UNDERWENT THE EMBRACE AND NOW SHE'S GONE???? WHAT DO I DO
Kiwi, who's exactly where Dove left her: ????
Modian: did you seriously lose her ALREADY?
Lettow: yeah I left my kid on her driveway and she just went into a hunger Frenzy and massacred her neighbours, mind if I borrow some of your ghouls to clean up the mess?
Modian: Why did you leave her on her driveway? unsupervised?? wtf??
Lettow: it's a Gangrel thing?? she has to fend for herself for three months before I take her in
Modian: but WHY
Lettow: why not?
Modian: do you want an essay?!?
Dove: hello, my baby is missing??
Lettow: yeah mine went AWOL after the massacre but I'm sure she'll turn up eventually. that happens to Gangrel fledglings a lot.
Dove: nvm, found her! she was exactly where I left her all along??
Lettow: just got a phone call from the Prince. my childe picked a fight with a Brujah and murdered him. we're both in trouble now unless I do a few nasty favours for the Prince but I'm -- *wipes tear from eye* -- so proud.
Modian: are you going to supervise her now?
Lettow: why the fuck would I do that
Dove: Shit my childe is missing AGAIN
Lettow: oh crap mine just left another couple of bodies, brb while I cover it up
Modian: ಠ_ಠ

How did you fuck up your OC and why?
Stolen shamelessly and self indulgently from @bixbiboom 's anon. Fellow members of the Vamily are welcome to join in!
Madeline Jones: Fed her blood to Strauss to save him from torpor, resulting in her getting kicked out of the Chantry and Los Angeles because the Tremere freaked out about it. Did it to give her some time on her own, and to teach her that undying loyalty is not always rewarded, and is certainly not worth it when not reciprocated.
Meredith Jones: Maddy's disappearance destroyed her. That was just a natural consequence of Maddy becoming a vampire lol so it was not done intentionally, but it allowed me to explore something I don't often see touched on - what happens to the people left behind.
Jonathan Grey: Losing Meredith, his wife, sucked, but what really fucked him up was becoming a ghoul in his forties, and eventually having to cut off his own children to preserve the Masquerade for a bunch of people he hated but could kill his girls because he had to hide his inability to age. Did that honestly because I found it interesting, but it (unintentionally) also really hardened him up into the kind of person Clan Lasombra eventually found interesting - much to his dismay - setting him up for his own Embrace. This plays a huge role in his never ending internal conflict - the Brujah ghoul he was (rebellious, compassionate to ghouls) VS the Lasombra Kindred he became (scornful of weakness and losing control).
Elisa Mulgrew: Everything surrounding her Embrace, her kidnapping by Lampago, and basically up to VTMNR (and also VTMNR itself). She was on her own struggling to survive without a sire to guide her, and I did this to explore her as a contrast to Maddy. Maddy is very low generation so even though she was an orphan, she had a lot of inherent power that made her vampiric life substantially easier as it was harder for elders to walk all over her or otherwise coerce or intimidate her. Elisa, in contrast, was generation ten - not that high, but high enough she seriously struggled and barely survived her childehood. I found it an interesting back story and am often drawn to the concept of feral children. Even if they're childer instead of actual children.
Rose d'Eleanor: Like Elisa and Maddy, she's another spin on the lonely orphan concept and in a way combines both of them - Rose is low generation at gen six, but an orphan of possibly the most persecuted clan outside of being an actual Baali. How do you survive on your own when you're completely and utterly alone? At least Elisa could talk to other Gangrel. Rose had nobody but a mortal, unghouled mother to look out for her, and so entered kindred society at almost a century old. Like feral childer, I find the concept of someone struggling to survive on their own, and hiding in plain sight to do so, quite compelling - especially when that person resolves to build her own community and bring it back from the brink. She parallels another OC of mine, Liriel Lavellan, in a lot of ways.
Olivia Martin: Was blood bound to a man who kidnapped her and genuinely fell in love with him underneath the blood bond. Other than her captivity and the obvious consent issues, he treated her quite well. She eventually escaped him, but she was on her own and struggled even more than Elisa and Rose did, and often missed the safety and security of her captivity. Her struggles with freedom, her genuine affection for her captor and his treatment of her otherwise being quite good for a captive fucked her up way more than the actual captivity and kidnapping did and she really struggled to reconcile those complicated feelings. I did it because I was like "fuck it, I want to explore a relationship that has genuine love in there but is actually pretty fucked up in a way that's not full of arguing." Because it seems like most fiction only explores the toxicity of relationships in ways that involve constant fighting. It was really fun to explore.
Kiwi: Having to drive for the Camarilla despite her derangement - needing to use willpower to be visible, including any vehicle she's in - making her a complete fucking danger on the road. She lives with a constant, low level guilt, a knowing that this is a choice she made that she's responsible for, but shows no signs of stopping. I wanted a character who's more "human" (for lack of a better word) in that she was more willing to endure the guilt of being a danger if it meant taking the easy option of not rebelling against her sire and entire support system because she was scared of being on her own and without support in a world she barely understood.
Oliver Stonecreek: It didn't really fuck him up so much as cause a constant source of annoyance in his life, but being Embraced at twelve means that he has to take extra precautions regarding the Masquerade than most as he can't move around human society freely like Kindred Embraced at adulthood. I thought it'd be really interesting to see how his life would be different as someone who appears twelve, and his young Embrace means he has a perspective other Kindred don't due to "missing out" on experiences most other Kindred had as mortals.

Kiwi fic excerpt that will probably be cut.
“Do we need to talk with her about the Masquerade?” said the cosplayer, Modian.
“Nah,” said the Polish guy. “I’m sure Charles has it handled. He’s discreet. Even the ones that don’t know about it keep their mouths shut because their regnants just tell them to.”
“Charlie’s an asshole,” said Kiwi.
Now they noticed her. The Polish guy looked amused, eagle preening itself on his shoulder. “Sure you want that getting back to him?”
“What are you going to do, dob me in?” said Kiwi.
“Dob?” said Modian, frowning.
“Sounds Australian,” said the Polish guy. “Mulgrew’s Australian. Has a similar accent, but more American. She said her father’s American.”
“He’s not going to be a problem, is he?”
“No. He’s in Australia with her mother.”
“I’m from New Zealand,” said Kiwi. “Name’s Kiwi.”
“Are their accents similar?” said Modian, as if she wasn’t there. “Because that sounds very Australian. I had to work with one of Sarrasine’s people once and he sounded like Crocodile Dundee.”
“Who’s that?”
“That’s exactly what the guy said when I mentioned it. They don’t have Crocodile Dundee in Australia.”
“What’s that? Some TV show? I don’t watch TV. I don’t know how to change the channel.”
“It is, yeah. Have you tried using the remote?”
“The what?”
