A few of my favorite ships are Damen/Laurent from 'Capive Prince' novels (kind, protective, bigger build seme x clever, kuudere, beautiful uke) and Andrew/ Neil from from 'All for The Game : Foxhole Court' novels (both have strong personalities, can be reversible couples, looks weak but actually strong)?

Sorry for this long ask, but can I ask, for BL recs that have the same vibe as one or a few of them (up above)?

Hello! No worries, it's a joy for me to recommend BL and if people enjoy my selection, it makes me all the more happy! However, unfortunately, I haven't read the novels you mentioned... So I feel like my recommendations will be way off the mark but I'll try my best ~

My Dear Agent (Ebino Bisuke): This one has bigger, kind, and protective seme and a cool, beautiful, and funny uke (not a kuudere, though). I not only enjoyed but laughed a lot, and the art is gorgeous so highly recommended! Can be read on INKR (or you can buy it from any place you can get TOKYOPOP titles).

Lullaby of the Dawn (Ichika Yuno): Another bigger, protective, puppy seme with a reserved/detatched, beautiful uke pairing with fantasy elements. I've only read the first volume so far but it's super emotional and beautiful inside and out! Can be read on Bookwalker (or any other place where you can get ShuCream titles).

Our Paradise (Greeneer): My last big & cute, puppy seme with reserved, beautiful uke recommendation that I'm nowadays going crazy over is Our Paradise. You won't regret giving this webtoon a chance! Not only the main characters, but their friend circles and the second couple we started to explore more in 2nd season are also fun & really interesting! And obviously, I need MOAR people to scream about it with me. Can be read for free with daily pass on Webtoon.

Just Love, The Monster (Tsukizuki Yoshi): This is a high school delinquent x honor student kind of story. Both MCs are headstrong and fight a lot obviously, but it was fun to read! It's in Futekiya's library, can be read with your subscription plan.

Total Submission (Tsushiko): This is another delinquent x honor student story with dom/sub element that I love! If you're okay with spicy BL and you love seeing hotheaded characters getting tamed by their sweet and kind senpai, this is for you. Available on Futekiya's subscription plan.

We Aren't Secure (Sojima Yuco): This title is an Omegaverse set in high school. MCs are childhood friends and the story has a bittersweet tone to it, and it's definitely nice to read characters who are on more equal terms in Omegaverse instead of an apparent power hierarchy in between. Available on Futekiya's subscription plan.

BONUS

God is Probably Left-Handed (Mushiba): If you've read any of Mushiba's works before, you might know it takes time to warm up to their stories. They are full of surprises, wacky coincidences, and interesting characters that you don't usually see in BL. But these are the exact reasons why I love Mushiba's works so much, and they are quite unforgettable. God is Probably Left-Handed fits into only one of the criteria you're looking for (I won't mention what it is so I won't spoil the story) but I was sooo surprised the way the manga ended! If you're looking for something different to read, Mushiba is your artist. Highly recommended!

As I have said, I haven't read the novels soI just went with whatever seemed suitable to the dynamics you mentioned, hopefully you'll find something that'll be of interest to you. Thank you so much for the ask and have a nice day!

Favorite MC - I'm not usually very good at picking favorites, but the MC that's coming to mind is Lee from Dead Man's Rest. I ended up liking him way more than any of the LIs, which is almost never the case for me.

Favorite LI - I know this isn't an indie, so it might not be in the sprit of the question, but Kent from Amnesia. I love that strange boy.

Favorite Tropes - Kuuderes. I like when a normally stoic LI has strong feelings for someone and is cute and/or awkward about it.

Some more specific ones - Overly affectionate drunks who accidently reveal their feelings to their crush, that thing where a character wakes up from being sick/injured and their LI has fallen asleep watching over them.

I SHOULD SAY IT'S BL and i know that's not everyone's fancy but i personally think that like even if you someone isn't a fan of the genre to give it a try. There's no like nsfw outright, hints to it but it's not done in like a fetish way. I've cried my eyes out to this one because the characters all just feel so real. the author did an amazing job just making the characters come alive and so even if someone is like ew bl PLEASE give it a chance.

yes this is another BL. Let me explain. there are nsfw scenes and whatnot but like, the CHARACTERS THE CHARACTERS. another one where I've cried to. The "top" for lack of a better description is somewhat aromantic, but not like oh I'm toxic man way but like in a. that's just the way he is because he can't figure out what love even is, so he uses his money to show people love because that's the only thing that makes sense to him. I am not giving an apt description but seriously, it's amazing as well, like you really get invested in the characters and i just love it.

Oooooh, lovely challenge, let's go! 

kuudere クーデレ = a character who is calm and collected and never panics, shows little emotion, and can even be completely emotionless. They may be hiding true feelings deep down, but rarely (if ever) show them. This archetype is popular for: older siblings, teachers, morally grey, ancient supernatural (gods), and warrior characters.

Kuudere Characters in BL

There are fewer of these in general because Thailand dominates BL and they do NOT like kuudere, too emo. But I think I can find you a few. They mostly gonna come from China tho, so that means censored bromances. It also means this is almost always the seme character. 

FROM CHINA 

Advance Bravely's Yuan Zong. 

We will never know if he's secretly a cinnamon roll, but I suspect as much. Still I think he fits the bill. Warning this BL is wackdoodle, Chinese censorship got ahold of it and instead of sad or depressing like normal, it just got weird af (with no actual f, of course).

Guardian's Puppet Master. 

This is a censored bromance but this side couple is so cute - very grumpy sunshine. He is stoney faced and entirely unflappable, as one might expect from an ancient alien with a super creepy power. Are they a couple? Maaayyyybeeee. Certainly in my universe. 

K.O. from Love O2O. 

Unequivocally my favorite on this list. This is a very very subtle side couple, but they gay, no doubts here. K.O. is pitch PERFECT kuudere. He doesn’t enter the series until half way through and they are very very side dishy, so you might not want to bother with the series just for them. Still, perky sunshine coder and badass hacker is probubly the best pairing ever to happen in modern cinema and I am wrecked we haven’t gotten an actual BL for this trope yet. 

Mr frostypants from the Untamed. 

Yeah yeah, bite me. But I think you could make a case for boy’s got a kuudere flute stuck up his proverbial arse. In the best possible way, of course. 

FROM THAILAND  

There may be a few more from Thailand than I listed, but I think that it is mainly wooden acting. (I thought long and hard about Itt from My Gear and Your Gown and then was like, “Why I’m I thinking so much about this crap show?” and stopped.) 

Phu from Oxygen. 

He’s about as close as Thailand gets to kuudere. This is the side dish seme in this series, and I found him profoundly unlikeable, but he fits the bill. 

Dean in Until We Meet Again. 

Okay he cracks a smile a few times but generally he’s totally unflappable. Honestly, I stuck him on this list because he is basically linguistically kuudere (SO COOL). Which is to stay, the way he speaks Thai is SO curt, and he is almost always entirely stoney faced. That changes in the later half of the series, but his language always remains sharp, and cool, and abrupt, bordering on rude but somehow not. And he’s allowed to get away with it because of his personality!  

There were a couple boys who almost make this list from Korea and Taiwan but actually turn out to be too much stundere semes for me. 

Honestly, I am probubly missing a ton from Japanese dark BL. 

It’s an archetype they loved to use (like Boys Love) often in the uke character. This is because, narratively, when a kuudere uke won’t budge or relent he gives the seme “license” to spiral into murder, mutilation, rape, and so forth. But there is a reason I only watch those shows once.

i’ve been watching a lot of thai BL dramas lately but i kinda got stuck on that one ship from my engineer (ramking). i really enjoyed where your eyes linger too, i only wish it had been longer. and before that i was really into the untamed (still am actually). also i just finished playing the last of us 2, which was pretty intense (i’m still shaken up), so i often check the tumblr tag, but that’s about it.

✨ how is the pandemic treating you?

i can’t really complain? i got to chill at home and not see people for two months, which was nice. quarantine’s been lifted here so i’m back to work since june, with a few adjustments (social distancing and all that). otherwise no one i know has been contaminated, so i’ve been lucky. i still struggle with the masks though, especially in this summer heat.

fire on fire by sam smith (blaming that really good ramking fanvid)

✨ recommend a movie.

i just watched relic (2020), and i really enjoyed it. horror is one of my favourite genres but it’s not easy finding real good movies among all the cheap jumpscares stuff. this one is the kind i really like: it uses the “horror as metaphor” trope, and it’s all about the atmosphere, making you feel uneasy without just going for gore and scary creatures. it deals with themes such as mother/daughter relationships, dementia, growing older, death, fear of abandonment, etc. also it’s directed by a woman, which is rare enough to be mentioned, and the cast is all women too, always a plus in my book.

cold, i deal very badly with hot temperatures. surprisingly, winter isn’t my favourite season though: i have seasonal affective disorder and it hits bad when the days get shorter.

my blood type is AB-, which is the rarest group. we’re also universal donors when it comes to plasma (if you’re AB type, consider donating plasma if you can, you can do so more often than with blood).

i’m socially anxious, which i guess manifests in the same way? i have a hard time approaching people and talking to them, even on the internet. i tend to rehearse in my head what i’m going to say when i do, and if i’m thrown off my script i easily lose composure and start sputtering nonsense. and then i take a lot of time to really open up to someone and trust them. i never really stop being afraid i’m annoying. we love feeling insecure.

i go with she/her but i don’t mind they/them.

✨ any pet peeves?

i hate that i still have to justify myself when i say i don’t want kids, i hate being told i’ll change my mind one day, and i hate that my family is pressuring me into having children. i hate being catcalled and having some stranger’s opinion of my looks that i never asked for. i hate invasive people, who get into your personal space and touch you without asking, or look at what you’re doing on your phone like it’s okay to do so. i have a lot of pet peeves, honestly.

i had to google this bc i had no idea there were other dere types than tsundere and yandere. honestly, i feel like these types are really cringy, but i’m gonna pick kuudere, i’d love to be more of a cool and collected person on the outside.

i guess, overall... 6? i’ve had my ups and downs, but it could have been much worse. some days are harder than others, but if i look at it with some distance, i think i’m not doing too bad. i have few friends but they’re really important to me, i have a small flat but it’s a place i can call mine, my job isn’t the best but far from the worst... if i could just stop overthinking everything for a second i think i would actually be happy with what i have.

i’m painfully awkward. i’ll try to sound cool, and it might even work, but don’t be fooled: i’m really just an anxious mess inside. i’ll over-analyze everything and if your answers get shorter and/or i feel a change of tone i’ll probably think i’ve annoyed you and disappear in a hole lmao. i can also take time to reply, bc sometimes even just sending a quick text is asking too much energy of me. but i’m also easy-going, pretty understanding and ask for very little (if anything at all).

Send 🔥 for an unpopular opinion

I don’t really get the appeal of some character type models Jpn series use nor the stereotypes I’ve noticed, like tsundere, kuudere and etc. Sure, they’re easy to build but the one-note aspect can get really boring and repetive, and it does a disservice for the character itself and the whole community as a whole. I believe that a well-written character is more than one stereotype like “he’s gay” or “he’s a tsundere” and *gasp* gives a more memorable impression from them. 

If you base your character on one specific aspect and give them no other qualities it gives an impression how they’re there just for the “diversity” coupon and to fool how you can write progressive characters like J.K. Rowling has supposedly done without actually doing so, I’m still looking for the proof on how Grindelwald x Dumbledore is a thing and feel like false advertising & disappointing to the viewer/reader. This applies to every type of character imo and not only minority groups: them feeling real makes the journey and everything happening in the story feel more genuine and intense. 

A proper example I can give on how to do things is from my favorite series I adore and hold the standard of what a series w/ a gay relationship should aspire to be: Even though the No.6 anime does the whole series great disservice my aster son Shion is shown repetively to be more than just the oblivious gay guy and Nezumi is shown to be more than a fuckin’ tsundere. If you pay attention you can see the traumatic shit affecting him and his worldview and what his core is in the end: an idealistic person who wants to help other ppl even though others don’t get why and how he’d do anything to save his loved ones. If you’ve read/watched the series you know what I mean.

They’re three-dimentional characters and feel genuine to me. Inb4 you ask yes I see Shion to have a good basis, bc the pictured society raises ppl not to question things and he is a literal evidence of that & how he realizes emotions & opinion are a thing is another proof of that. I could go on how I adore Shion’s character development and how he changes during the series and how the final resolution makes full sense. You remember the relationship aspect second and his personality first + same on Nezumi’s case as well. 

The example on how not to character is build is every shitty BL series bc if they’re not focusing on other than two guys fucking they don’t care on building a good story. Srsly if you can avoid most cliched/edgy series like plague, you can find better stuff elsewhere.

Fall Anime 2018 Watchlist

We’re about halfway into the season so this is probably kinda pointless by now, but here’s a quick rundown of the stuff I’m watching this season.

Dropped

Jingaisan no Yome: This is a 3 minute show and I won’t spend longer than that writing about it (I’m timing myself). I didn’t know it was a short going in. I’m not really into shorts, Saiki kun being the only exception and the story was less MahoYome and more... i don’t even have an apt comparison, it just was maybe more serious about the “marriage” thing than something with a giant floofball character should be.

Tokyo Ghoul: Re 2: It’s simple. I watched episode 1 and realized I had no fucking clue of how any of this related to the ending of the first season, no idea of who half the characters were and where did they allegiances lie and what is Kaneki even trying to do. Although not loyal to the manga, the first two seasons of Tokyo Ghoul had a story that could be followed and made sense, this, however, is just jumping over plot points with no rhyme or reason and there’s nothing but confusion.

Bloom Into You: There’s nothing actually wrong with this show and I was kind of looking forward to a yuri romance that wasn’t rapey or incesty bullshit, but something about this one just didn’t click with me. Like Touko fell in love with Yuu too quickly, and given Yuu’s ace/aro identity, it would feel weird for her to do a 180 and suddenly fall in love with Touko. I kind of want more fun and emotions in my romance stories and this one didn’t have much of either.

Chopping Block

Given a few things the past two weeks that didn’t go according to plan, I fell behind on my anime watching after keeping it in control for the first third of the season and i’m quite annoyed. And because of this, and my upcoming research trip to Japan at the end of the month, I might end up having to drop a couple of series.

Bakumatsu: Objectively speaking, this show is really bad. The production values are poop, the story is a wacky mess that takes itself a bit too seriously and the characters are flat and uninteresting, the villain is egregiously boring. This show also has Matsuo Basho as a secret tive traveling ninja, and that puts me at quite the predicament. I want to see more of this utterly bonkers historical reinterpretation, but boy do I wish they could make it more exciting.

SAO Alicization:  The only reason I, a notorious SAO hater, is watching SAO is because I hate myself. With that out of the way, boy is this SAO boring. We’re four episodes in and the only thing that’s happened is they cut an old tree because nothing can stop Kirito and his new friend, Yellow Kirito. This show needs to start getting offensive and/or stupid soon or i’ll die of boredom.

Karakuri Circus: I hear this one’s from the same mangaka as UshiTora? I love UshiTora and I can see the resemblance between giant guy whose name I can’t remember and Tora. His character and his schtick are so far the most interesting thing to me, with the kuudere puppet girl whose main purpose seems to be to get paired with him  having yet to make an impression on me. I’m also still not really certain what the overall plot is. I do love stories about found families, so hopefully I can stick with this one

Hinomaru Sumou: If my watching schedule were normal, this wouldn’t be in this section. Whilst not the best sports show of the season, and chock full of some of the most eyeroll worthy aspects of sports shonen *cough cough* toxic *cough cough* masculinity *cough cough*, Hinomaru Sumou has the fire and passion for an underrepresented sport that’s usually enough to hook me. I just don’t have time, and if push comes to shove, I’ll prioritize other shows over this one.

Banana Fish: Yo, okay, before you lynch me for being a hater or whatever, let me tell you I have zero issues with Banana Fish. I don’t hate it, I don’t think it’s Bad Representation(TM) whatever the fuck that means, I definitely don’t think it’s fujobait or just another BL. It just doesn’t make me happy. This probably doesn’t make a lot of sense, but I’ve never been a fan of tragedy. It’s also part of the reason I’m dropping Tokyo Ghoul. I don’t like hopeless stories and tragic romances. I’m somewhat spoiled on how the manga ends and each time I find myself less and less inclined to watch the newer episodes because the descent into misery is just not enjoyable for me. It’s not the show’s wrongdoing, it’s just not the kind of story I like. I’m probably too far along to drop it at this point, but also I kinda wish I could drop it because I get so little joy out of it. Also, my main hook is of course Ash and Eiji’s relationship, but 15 episodes in (I’m behind, as is evident) the time they’ve spent together is so minimal, I can’t even appreciate that a whole lot.

Dakaichi: Me: Man I really want a yuri anime without rapey bullshit. Also me: watches BL anime with rapey bullshit. I have literally no excuse. I think the basic setup lends itself really well for a romcom and Takato is a very likable character, it’s a shame it’s the same old rapey bullshit. In my defense, episode two was really sweet and I’ve been hoping for more stories along that line, even though the show has failed to deliver them since. Episode 5 may have pushed the line even beyond what I’m willing to tolerate, but it’s unclear. I might end up unexpectedly dropping it after episode 6. HEY JAPAN WOULD IT KILL YOU TO MAKE A BL ANIME THAT WASN’T RAPEY BULLSHIT? JUST ONE?

Fairy Tail Final: I just want closure man. This adaptation retains all the worst attributes of the previous season, terribly slow pacing (what for?! the manga is over!!) minimal animation, recapalooza. The color palette is slightly brighter than before, which I appreciate. Fairy Tail’s last arc wasn’t as bad as Bleach’s, but it was still pretty bad in the manga; still I hope seeing it animated will make it feel less messy and slightly more coherent. The FT anime has also in the past filled in some blanks that existed in the manga, so hopefully they can make the best out of it here.

Tsurune: No, this isn’t the best sports anime of this season either. Although that’s hard to judge given how it’s barely on its second (third, i’m behind) episode. Technically, I feel more compelled to drop this than Hinomaru, but also I want to give it a fair chance. That said, the first episode was.... profoundly underwhelming and borderline upsetting, with how everyone put Minato on the spot in spite of his having an actual psychologic condition that drove him away from kyudo. I’m all in for stories about growing and surpassing your own obstacles, but I hope they go about it in a less mean-spirited way. Also, the characters feel pretty shallow so far. I’m not even gonna pretend the main reason I want to keep watching isn’t gorgeous guy with the ponytail-san, because I’m now old enough that I immediately gravitate towards the senseis rather than the teenage protags.

In spite of everything, Anime is, in fact, Good

Golden Kamuy: Like with many split-cours, there’s nothing much to say beyond “if you liked the first one, you’ll like this one”. The production values are still tragic, but I think the pace has improved, and the dynamics between the different factions are so fluid and constantly changing they make the story very enthralling. It also continues to have the Best Reaction Faces.

Gakuen Basara: Listen, listen. You all knew I was gonna watch this. And I love Basara so much I still think this show is a masterpiece even when it’s objectively atrocious. I do not reccommend it to anyone who isn’t already a fan (and I mean a blind fan willing to consume anything from this franchise, even in its cheapest, dumbest, worst looking incarnation). That said there are a couple of interesting things, namely the power rivalry between Hideyoshi and Nobunaga, this never happened in the original series because Nobunaga died before Hideyoshi was introduced. Anyway, just shoot that Masamune x Kojuuro fanservice straight into my veins please and thank you

Zombieland Saga: One of the two biggest surprises of the season and one that was nowhere near my radar. An original production by studio MAPPA with perhaps the wildest premiere episode of the season that’s somehow making me like idols?! It’s also giving us the most Miyano Mamoru has ever Miyano’d and it’s amazing and histerical. The characters are also very charming, specially bikegang leader Saki and the always legendary Yamada Tae and the show isn’t scared of letting its cute idols get gross and silly and dirty. There’s also a feeling of mystery that I find very appealing. Definitely didn’t expect this one to be one of the highlights of my week, yet here we are.

SSSS Gridman: Just when I’d vowed a giant fuck you to Studio Trigger, in they come with one of their most quiet productions yet, with characters that speak their lines in soft, leveled voices, tragedies that feel palpable, emotionally climactic battle scenes and a sense of tension and mystery that makes it impossible to take your eyes away. It does have the caveat of oversexualizing the female characters, specially the villain, and not giving Rikka virtually anything to do, but past that, it’s been a very pleasant and intriguing surprise. Also of note, I have no background knowledge of the Gridman tokusatsu series but that hasn’t really been an impediment to enjoy this series.

Double Decker: Doug & Kirill: A spinoff to the 2010 superhero hit Tiger & Bunny, we have a less superpowery buddycop comedy with a cool and diverse cast, whose main character wants to BRING DOWN CAPITALISM, okay, put an end to economic inequality and classes, but that’s basically the same thing. The show is pretty far along because it premiered early for some reason, and so far it’s been mostly one-shot stories very thinly connected to the distribution of the illegal drug Anthem, with our main plot having only come up two episodes ago with the fantastic Zabel and Bamboo Man twist. The dynamics between the main duo are great and Kirill is a riot as a protagonist. 

Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru: Or Run with the Wind. Now THIS is the best sports anime of the season. Brought to you by the studio behind Haikyu, based on a novel by the author of Fune wo Amu. Firstly I love that it’s set in university, because it gives the cast a lot more variety in their interests, ages and personalities, their goals, their baggage, and it makes the process of bringing this team of misfits together even more interesting to watch. The characters feel very human in the way they speak, their worries, their relationships, their actions. The show’s done a great job so far in building the characters and making them worth cheering for. Also Ouji is my spirit animal. If you ever wanted a show to motivate you into running, this is what you’ve been waiting for! Another great surprise of this season for sure.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo: Finally part Five is here! And in it we get perhaps the most interesting Jojo protagonist right off the bat, with troubled Giorno and his difficult past and his wonderful Stand ability. His new set of allies is also quite eccentric and interesting and every scene and dialogue has that special Jojo flavor of crazy and ridiculous and always a load of fun. This one will have 39 episodes, so we’re barely getting started and I’m already loving all of it.

Thunderbolt Fantasy 2: Urobutcher’s favorite puppets are back with a vengeance! Every bit as fun, insane, cool and over-the-top as the first season, with the added value of the rapport between the characters, evidenced by how brilliant the few scenes in which Shang and Lin share the screen are. With a brand new story that expands the world of our favorite puppets, and even more new gorgeous puppets added to the mix to make Shang’s life a mess, this show is definitely my favorite this season and potentially of the year. Let Urobuchi keep doing puppets for as long as he wants!

Tsunderes.

i KNOW it's so common to have it and kuudere and tsunderes are very similar but GAH I HATE TSUNDERES SO MUCH because it's usually used as a he or she is a total bitch but don't worry guys it's bc they are shy <3 LIKE WHOT. yes yes they get "warmer over time" but this is why i had to stop watching kaguya-sama love is war because i can't stand that show i couldn't 😭

I know people say the development gets started in the second season and i know it's like critical acclaim and popularity is deserved blah blah but idk man, the first season just turned me off SO MUCH that i haven't been able to pick it back up ESPECIALLY THE END ARC AT LIKE THE FESTIVAL idk i just pining and missed chances and mind games i can only do for like 2 episodes but after that i NEED TO SEE SOME PROGRESSION otherwise i get so annoyed

Hahahahah Such an interesting topic! haha least fav first and then our faves 🤣 ok.. let's see: "Tsunderes"... it depends if they are annoying because sometimes there are Tsunderes that are charming and adorable with a spicy feisty side... those I enjoy, but the ones that only scream and act rude or mean for no reason... I pass. The "pinning", I enjoy it when there is real tension and life actually, either pulls them apart or together (not the random unrealistic "coincidences", I like it if it is believable or one of the characters needs to fully develop before confessing (I need to see them accepting themselves before accepting the love of others) if pinning is well done the ending is well deserved in the long run. The "starts off as a bicth" Yeah I don't like it, I DO enjoy good enemies to lovers because both have very distinct goals or morals but then understand the other's point of view. But if the character is just a bitch for being one without further character development... I don't like that.

In my case I don't have "least fav tropes" but I see these types of content/story/character... I'm closing the page right then and there: Power abuse, gaslighting, mental health being treated as an "accessory" (not depicted as seriously and delicately as it should be dealt), I don't hate it but it is not my fav the "love at first sight" ... I need to see and feel the foundation of a relationship before realizing it is love. and my biggest turn of is if the characters are super annoying or super ..what I call "empty pretty and annoying" Im sorry they could be the prettiest in the universe but if they don't have a personality and are annoying... is a big NO.
