Ok do you think if someone used their true name to order them to lie, Faeries could lie? Or end up in a repeat cycle or end up like rumplestilskin and rip themselves in half or just lay down this is Holly black’s faeries btw
the beauty of language is that words have multiple meanings. so if you were to say, "Larkin Gorm Garrett, I order you to lie", i expect he would lay down on the ground, because that is another meaning of lie that he can easily accomplish without putting himself through An Ordeal.
however, if you were to be more specific with your words, and say, "Larkin Gorm Garrett, i order you to repeat after me for the next five minutes. i am a mortal girl who did not poison Liriope." i think maybe that might be a way to circumvent the system. though, i suppose it depends on which holds more weight in their system of magic: words or true names.
i also have a theory that lying just causes faeries a great deal of pain, which is why they "can't" do it, and i may or may not have gotten this from my faerie folklore studies (but i can't quite remember).
of course, only Holly herself can tell us for certain 😌

Taryn x the Ghost
I Ship it. We need more of it.
I know there's a lot of Nicasia x Taryn shippers out there. I get it. I ship that too, but there's something so sweet and caring about them. They both suffered from Locke and I think they could find healing with each other. Not to mention I think The Ghost would be so good to her.
Ask me about a ship!

“There’s the lean, handsome faerie that looks at least part human, who winks and tells me to call him the Ghost. He has sandy-colored hair, which is normal for a mortal but is unusual for a faerie, and ears that come to very subtle points.”

Will we ever find out what Cardan’s true name is?? I mean, I’ve accepted that it’s Cardigan
sfgkfdjfkd Cardigan 😂😂🙈 i love it.
i feel if this isn't part of Cardan's name, it is at least the nickname given to him by his loved ones in moments of endearment and mockery (likely culprits: Jude, Kaye?, Vivi, and/or Heather). and while i can't say with certainty if Holly will ever reveal Cardan's true name, we can entertain ourselves by making some plausible guesses.
we know that true names usually come in three's, involve either nature or Celtic meanings, and that Holly seems to have a penchant for alliteration in these name triplets.
there's Rath Roiben Rye and Larkin Gorm Garrett. to my knowledge, those are the only true names we know.
we also know that, likely, the name of the character is one of the three names of their true name.
Rath Roiben Rye is called "(Lord) Roiben" throughout the books, and in QON Madoc calls the Ghost "Garrett".
so Cardan's true name could conceivably include "Cardan" and one or two other C names. it is unclear whether or not "Greenbriar" would be included as part of his true name, or whether this is simply an indicator of his royal lineage–since most of the other fae do not, to my understanding, possess surnames.
taking all of this into account, here are some potential C names for Cardan:
Calix- means "chalice", or "most beautiful", which would be fitting. the "calyx" is the part of a flower shaped like a funnel, and Cardan also has flower references in its meaning.
Caspian- like the sea. and another fictional prince.
Calder- meaning "cold brook".
Cuinn- meaning "wise, intelligent" or "leader".
Caradoc- meaning "adored" or "loved". name of a legendary Welsh king and one of the Knights of the Round Table.
Castor- as in "Castor and Pollux", the twins from Greek Mythology. Castor was mortal, Pollux was immortal, and Pollux agreed to share his immortality with his brother. they became emblems of immortality and death. Castor is also the seed of a plant (invasive, and found in wastelands).
if his true name does include Greenbriar, here are some potential G names for alliteration purposes:
Garland- honestly, i just like the way "Cardan Garland Greenbriar" sounds. rolls off the tongue. i think it means "wreath of flowers" or something, which is suitable for our High King.
Gwydion- meaning "born of the trees", and a figure in Welsh mythology.
Garance- the deep, vivid red colour that comes from madder root.
additions are welcome!

idk who else to talk about this too but isn’t cardan an alias because True Names Are Important™?? i could’ve sworn i read a mention of it in one of the books, then we get the exchange of vows scene in qon where he uses cardan and wasn’t it previously established vows where to be exchanged with like, true names? in wk when taryn marrying locke like didn’t jude bring up the wedding customs of fair folk? i’m so sorry this is a mess of an ask but idk who else to talk to (i’msorryifi’mmisremembering)
Hi there, Nonnie!
Thanks for the ask! You've certainly come to the right place to shriek/conspire about all things TFOTA 🥰
I can see how you got there from what we’re given in the series. It’s explained just enough so that we know True Names are, indeed, Important, but not enough to where we remember all the rules off the tops of our heads. Fortunately, I can help you.
Here are some things about True Names and vows, as I understand them (but also, if anyone has any evidence to the contrary, feel free to share!):
1) True names are basically just full names. For instance, Lord Roiben's True Name is Rath Roiben Rye, but everyone calls him Roiben because, for obvious reasons, his full name isn't common knowledge. The Ghost's True Name is Larkin Gorm Garrett, but Madoc calls him Garrett in QON to prove to Jude that the Ghost is under his control (”The Ghost” is just a codename used by the Court of Shadows to further conceal identity).
2) You can’t control a faerie without saying their entire name. For example, in QON, when the Ghost tries to climb out of the pit in Hollow Hall to kill Cardan, Taryn must say the Ghosts's entire name in order to make him forget Madoc's orders to kill the High King. The only exception to this rule is, of course, if the faerie in question is already pledged into your service (a la Cardan to Jude in TCP).
So it's likely that Cardan is one of his names, but he has two others that make up his “True Name” that we don't know (Greenbriar, I'm guessing, is just a lineage name).
3) In terms of vows, I don't think a true name is required. The Fae are bound by their words, their promises. Since vows are essentially just more concrete, clearly-worded promises, you wouldn't need a True Name to bind them.
For example, in TCP, Cardan pledges himself to Jude for one year and one day, but he doesn't say "Cardan Greenbriar" or even "Cardan" anywhere in his vow. He just says "I swear myself into your service...". And Jude was indeed able to control Cardan for the rest of TCP and most of TWK.
Therefore, we can conclude that the vow, albeit made without a name at all, since it came from a faerie’s lips, was binding as any- including the vow of marriage at the end of TWK where Cardan uses "I, Cardan, son of Eldred, High King of Elfhame" but not his true name.
Where you could have been mislead is the reason for privacy behind marriage vows in Faerie. Having no one there to hear them might make whatever those vows are seem like a secret (at least to us). A logical assumption would be that the reasoning for privacy is faeries tell each other their true names. However, I don’t think that’s ever explicitly stated in the books. What is explicitly stated in TWK is this:
4) Faerie marriage vows are private, not because they say their true names, but because no witnesses are required. The Fae are beholden to their word. So any promise they make, formal or casual, they are technically bound to keep. Unlike mortal marriages where, traditionally, a witness's presence is legally required during the vows in order to hold the people making them accountable for what they say they will do (since we can lie/break our promises).
I reckon it might even be considered an insult amongst the Fae, to request the presence of witnesses during such a ceremony, because that would imply they don't trust their word (basically comparing them to mortals). Though, this is just an inference I’m making, not something stated in the books.
5) Most importantly, vows are promises, whereas the giving of one’s True Name is a complete and total submission of power. I think it would be irresponsible for the implication of marriage in Faerie to be that you must fully submit to one another. What’s more, I don’t think Cardan, given his own history with feeling/being controlled, and knowing how power goes to Jude’s head, would willingly give her his True Name unless the circumstances were very dire.
Cardan wants Jude to trust him, just as he trusts her. That does not require a power dynamic, but rather, an equal balance of power. 🖤💫
