"They're going to ask questions about the relationship-" your publicist reminded you as you stood to the side of the stage. This was the first talk show you were doing in a while. "-remember you don't have to answer any of them." She finished looking at you directly with a reassuring look.
Nodding you, adjusted top trying to compose yourself.
Waving at the live audience, you smiled brightly. The best fake smile you could muster as you approached the host who was standing up. His hand reached towards you as you shook it politely before taking a seat.
You'd been in the clear for the first few minutes until the dreaded question came up. "So is it true?" You caught the end of the question, the beginning was a blur, but you knew exactly what he was talking about.
'Remember you don't have to answer any of them.' Your publicist's words rang in your head and you smiled awkwardly intertwining your fingers in your lap.
"I'm taking this time to really focus on my career and that's what really matters to me right now" you feigned a cheerful smile, something you'd picked up being in the business. You weren't lying, you were only exaggerating the truth.
Actually, the truth was that you were miserable. Life without him was miserable. Without your best friend. Without the person, you'd confided in and thought was your future.
It didn't help that you couldn't grief in peace. It felt like the world was looking at you with a microscope and you couldn't leave your house without the questions. The noise and fuzz over the break-up. You didn't have time to process it all.
"I think we should keep things professional," you whispered as Tom held you close. One arm around the small of your waist, one hand on your cheek. Both your arms were curled on your chest, holding the collar of his shirt.
Things had moved quickly. His lips were on yours before you could think or breath and soon your arms were curled around each other pulling each other closer.
But the small voice in the back of your head told you to stop. You couldn't do this again. You couldn't go down that road again. Not with Tom. You didn't want to ruin things with him. Not like your previous relationship. Who, shocker, had also been with a co-star and did not end well.
Tom knew that.
Yet his lips felt so right on yours and neither of you wanted whatever it was you were doing to end.
"I want to be with you," Tom whispered back brushing your cheek with his thumb before planting a soft kiss on your lips. His lips lingered on yours slowly peeling away to breathe. His forehead pressed against yours.
"I don't want things to end badly," you sighed shutting your eyes. You felt Tom shaking his head.
"They won't."
That'd been a lie. A big fat lie that you relived every day.
Exhaling, you slumped your shoulders. You were home safe. No other questions were asked apart from the one you answered, not really answering it. You made it clear you weren't there to talk about it. But it was the only thing you thought about on the ride home.
It was the only thing you could think about now as you wiped your makeup off. The reflection in the mirror was tired and weak. Emotionally drained. You could feel your throat tightening as you ran a damp cotton pad under your eyes, remembering the time you were so tired he carefully tried wiping your eyelids.
Splashing your face with water, you swallowed the knot in your throat. Shutting off the lights, you dragged your feet towards your bed crawling into it burying yourself under the covers. Your body relaxed as you laid your head on your pillow.
Somehow you could still smell him on your pillows. Maybe you were going crazy, but you got a whiff of his cologne and you felt the knot in your throat coming back. This time the tears were quick and before you could stop yourself, they were running down your face and onto the pillow.
"I trusted you, Tom." You breathed rapidly trying to stop yourself from hyperventilating. You could feel your throat closing, your chest compressing, you felt dizzy.
"I'm sorry," Tom rushed behind you trying to reach out to you, but you shrugged him off. You were in his hotel room, but the distance between the two of you felt infinite.
Your head was fogged with the images of Tom with another woman.
"It wasn't like that," He continued talking, but you couldn't understand him. His words had no meaning.
"Stop," you breathed, your heart pounding and the tears hot on your cheeks. You leaned against the wall trying to gather yourself. "How could you do this to me? You knew what I went through, you knew why I was scared of this-" you were out of breath your voice was getting louder as you spoke.
Tom seemed to grow smaller as you towered over him.
He knew this would tear you apart.
"It was nothing. She's a friend," Tom exclaimed, but you were way too heated. Friends didn't stand so close to each other. Friends didn't hold hands like that.
"How could you do this to me? To us?" You huffed shaking your head. The tears were still there, but you were now on fire. You were burning inside with anger and pain.
"Sweetheart, please-" Tom begged trying to get a hold of you. You brushed him off shaking your head.
"I can't do this, Tom. Everyone has seen those photos," you shook your head biting your lip as the tears continued to form and fall. You wrapped your hands around yourself. "You did the same thing he did," you shook your head.
"I thought you were different," you sobbed turning on your heel and towards the door. It closed with a soft thud as you left.
Swallowing the memory, you grabbed your phone. You were curious to see if the interview was circulating. You were sure it was. People had been in your business since your first relationship and they'd been so invested in the one with Tom.
The one you hoped would be different.
Through blurred vision, you saw people were reposting the part of your interview where you talked about it. Everyone was quick to jump to conclusions. But what caught your eye was not all the reposts and the added commentary. It was him.
A screenshot of something he'd posted on his stories. Something that seemed to be a direct reply to your interview clip. Someone had posted it and though you hated that people were so invested in your love life, you were glad they reposted it because there was no way you were looking at his stories these days.
It was a quote. A quote about loss and forgiveness and you don't know if he was directly talking about you, but it sure felt like it.
You felt your heart fall to the pit of your stomach and suddenly your hands felt clammy as you held your phone.
Inhaling deep, you turned it off. You had to sleep.
But as you placed the phone on your nightstand, the screen turned on illuminating your dark room.
Shakily, you brought the phone back under your covers shielding it as if there were others who could just look over your shoulder and see your phone. You huddled under your covers seeing the notification. The three letters and the spiderweb emoji flashed on your screen.
You opened the message. The thread of messages, the grey bubbles took up your screen. The unanswered messages all pleading to talk. Had you been childish to not answer his messages? Maybe. But he'd hurt you in a way you weren't expecting.
Can we talk please
The text read. You weren't going to answer. You refused. You were about to turn it off when the phone started vibrating in your hand. He was calling.
You let it ring once. Twice. Three times, until you inhaled deeply swiping your phone bringing the phone up to your ear.
"Don't hang up please," Tom's voice made your heart flutter and you froze. "Please let me talk to you," he begged. His voice was low, but there was a hint of gratitude that you'd picked up the phone.
"Okay...talk."
He talked. You listened. It wasn't going to be easy, but you also couldn't let go of Tom. You hadn't been able to in the weeks that you were separated.
He was it for you, so you listened.

4
Later that night when Henry was back in Kensington, sitting on the couch in his living room, having a glass of whiskey, he couldn't stop his thoughts from running through the night's events again and again. He was disappointed, he was angry, he was sad - he simply felt terrible. Kal was lying beside him, his big head resting on Henry's lap, enjoying a bit of tender love and care.
When his phone beeped, his heart skipped a beat.
Ella?
He took a look at the screen and closed his eyes with a sigh. Charlie. His brother knew Henry had a date tonight and now he was trying to tease him.
"Hey, supes...how's your date going. Already saved the damsel in distress? Holding her in your arms rn?"
Henry considered ignoring the message but he decided to answer anyway.
"Nope. Back in my fortress of solitude. With empty arms."
His phone started ringing only seconds after he'd sent the message.
"Hi Charlie." Henry greeted his brother not too enthusiastically.
"Hey, Hen. What's up? You're already back from your date?"
"Yeah...."
"You don't sound so good. What happened?"
"I fucked it up, Charlie. That's what happened." Henry pinched the spot at the root of his nose with his thumb and middle finger. He felt a bad headache coming. He was going to need a painkiller.
"She turned you down?"
His little brother sounded much too amused for Henry's taste.
"Well, we had kind of a Daenerys-Ser-Jorah-moment..."
"Ouch...she friendzoned you?"
"Yep."
Charlie laughed.
"I can hardly believe it. But good to know even you can't have every woman you want. I mean normally they jump you before you can count to three."
"Oh shut up. That's not funny." Henry snapped, his voice loud and sharp.
"Okay, okay...I'm sorry brother. No need to get mad."
"But I am mad. Mad at myself."
"Why. What did you do?"
"I didn't listen to my intuition." Henry said with a deep sigh of exhaustion and disappointment. "You know when I asked Ella out and she agreed my gut feeling told me to take her to a simple Italian restaurant, nothing trendy, nothing too expensive. Just a normal place for a normal date. She even suggested going out in Uxbridge because she knows some nice restaurants in her neighbourhood. But my ego knew better. It was like...make this date different. Take her to a place ordinary guys don't have access to. Let her see how special you are and what you have to offer...and my intuition was beaten."
"You wanted to show off to her" Charlie stated the problem in one sentence.
"Yeah. I wanted to impress her. Of course I chose the Aston Martin and not the Audi or the Tesla. And I took her to "Gianni's"..."
"Oohh...Fort Knox..."
"Exactly. The food was great, she loved it, but she was intimidated by the atmosphere and the exclusivity. She was tense and felt uncomfortable and our conversation was dragging and uneasy. It didn't help much that I made a fool of myself, trying to make her loosen up. On set the director would have stopped me for overacting. And I don't know what happened when she went to the toilet but when she came back she was pretty jazzed and somehow distressed.
And now she thinks our lives are too different, that she doesn't fit into my world and that we're better off as friends. Oh and she mentioned not being completely over her ex but that was probably an excuse to make me feel better. To put it in a nutshell, I was bragging and it totally backfired"
"But why? Bragging is not much like you."
"Honestly? I don't know. There's just something about her that puts me off. And that's crazy because she is really down-to-earth, humble and nice. I'm sure she's not the kind of woman that's impressed by status symbols, money or fame. I knew that the minute I met her. But I have this irrational need to show her what I've got. Maybe it's because I subconsciously think that all that's left when I show her the real Henry, without all the luxurious and impressive extras, is an ordinary, average, nerdy bore."
"You can hardly call it subconscious when you can name the core problem so accurately." Charlie threw in.
"Shut up, smartass. That's not the point."
"No, it's not. The point is that somewhere underneath all these muscles and this superman aura you're still the insecure teen, who always had the feeling to be not good or cool or attractive enough."
"Oh come on, Doctor Freud. Don't try to analyze me."
"There's not much to analyze, Henry." Charlie sounded serious now. "You have this tendency to feel bad for who you really are. An ordinary guy who likes pc games, books, animals and sports. But that's not nerdy, it's perfectly normal. You're a home loving man in his late thirties who prefers a netflix marathon to a wild night out. That's not boring, it's what millions of people our age do. But it collides with your public image, with your looks and the characters you portray, so you play this role when you date women and they're attracted by the man you pretend to be, by all the glamour, money and VIP stuff and when you can't live up to their expectations when a relationship evolves it doesn't work and they leave or you leave or whatever."
"Are you done with your psychological profile?" Henry was annoyed and Charlie could almost hear him rolling his eyes.
"Not yet. What your little brother is trying to tell you is the following. When you're not showing your true self you attract the kind of women you actually don't really want and who don't really want you. Physically maybe but not for the real thing. So the fact that Ella doesn't want your jet-set self, that she doesn't like all the glitter and gold, shows that she's perfect for you. For the real Henry. Got it?"
"I don't know. Sounds a little complicated to me. But even if you were right. The damage is done. She just wants me as a friend."
"Then be a friend. Spend time with her, talk to her, show her your world outside the biz and when she gets to know you better she'll realize that you're not a poser and maybe there'll be a second chance someday."
"Mmhhh..."
"That's all you have to say?"
"I'll think about it, Charlie."
"Good. Maybe, just for once, you listen to your annoying little brother."
"Yeah...maybe."
*****
Jackson took a big bite of his slice of pizza looking at Ella with a frown. Ella had invited him and Katie for a crisis meeting at her place and they had shown up with lunch exactly after Ella's taste: Pizza and donuts. Ella had put them in the picture about last night and now they were discussing the events.
"But I don't understand why you're not willing to go out with him on another date. Why not give him a second chance?"
"Why would I? This one date was enough to tell that I don't fit into his world."
"You're just scared, he's really 10 inch." Jackson teased with a lewd expression and Katie started to giggle.
Ella made a face at him but she couldn't help but grin. "Why would I be scared? Have you seen your brother naked lately." She asked with raised eyebrows and a smirk.
"Eww...Elsie...gross" Jackson made a puking noise.
"You started it..." She gave him a friendly nudge.
"Guys..." Katie laughed. "Back on topic, okay? I understand Ella, Jax. Maybe his lifestyle really isn't what Ella's looking for in a man."
"You can hardly judge his lifestyle after one date. Maybe he tried to impress her and went a little over the top. And Ella, I'm not saying I know the guy but what I've seen of him on set was all humble, decent and very friendly. No signs of airs and graces, no extravagance.
"Yeah, maybe. But it's not just the car and the restaurant and his VIP friends or his job. I really think it's too early. I'm not ready for something new...after Craig." Ella nibbled a donut, shaking her head before giving Jax a shrug.
"That's bullshit, Elsie, and you know it." Jackson replied, his tone pretty annoyed. "You had zero problems fucking my brother only two months after the break up. And now you're trying to tell me you're not ready to date after one year? He wasn't asking you to marry him. He was asking for a second date. You have to be open minded if you want to move on"
"Oh, stop lecturing me, Jax. That's not what I need right now." Ella got up from her chair with an angry snort. "I need to pee." She left the room and slammed the door behind her.
Jackson took a deep breath and rolled his eyes.
Katie turned to him with a soft smile. "We both know you're right about Craig but don't be so hard on her."
"I'm not hard on her, Katie. She's hard on herself. Why does she make such a fuss about a little swagger? He tried to impress her, so what? Isn't that kind of a compliment that he tried so hard? Truth is...she's scared to be not good enough for him...that's all. Elsie thinks she has to be glamorous and  extravagant to fit into his world. She feels not special enough, not beautiful enough, too average or whatever strange fantasies are running around on her mind. She is afraid that he loses interest soon but instead of taking a risk she chickens out and just wants to be friends with him."
"Maybe it's for the best...A bird in the hand...you know. I don't want her to get hurt…"
"No, Katie. You didn't see them at the party. There was this chemistry between them...it was incredible. Like in a movie, you could almost see the sparks and little hearts fly from their eyes. They're meant for each other. As lovers, not as friends." Jackson let out a sigh. He sounded just as frustrated as helpless.
"Yeah...I thought so, when she told me about it. The way she talked about him, with so much enthusiasm, it was remarkable. But Ella doesn't see it that way. Or she doesn't want to." Katie shrugged. "You know how stubborn she is. And how much a cerebral person. Reason tells her that he's out of her league and that his world is too different from hers, from ours. She won't let us tell her otherwise. So just let them be friends and if you're right, if they're made for each other, destiny will find its way."
Katie patted Jackson's knee giving him a comforting smile.
"Yeah. Or maybe she wastes the chance of finding the love of her life and ends up on her own..."
"That's not our responsibility, Jax."
"What's not your responsibility?" Ella asked, entering the room, obviously in a better mood again. It was typical for her. Close to throwing a tantrum the one minute and back to cool, calm and collected the other. Her temper was unpredictable sometimes.
"Your happiness." Jackson replied, giving her an apologetic smile. "I didn't mean to lecture you, Elsie. I'm just trying to help."
"I know, doofus. And I didn't mean to snap. It's just...let me handle this my way, okay?"
"Okay, at your own risk." Jackson got up and hugged her.
"At my own risk." Ella mumbled into his chest.

You're welcome :) I haven't watched k-drama since rediscovering the beauty of animation after university. May I ask for recommendations? Btw I was thinking of how to ask about the Pidge/Allura fic that you mentioned at the end of Heartstone so I'm guessing(hoping) Heartstone p2 in one of those screenshots means it is still a thing
Bahaha, yes, the Heartstone p2 in my Ideas screenshot is the Pidge/Allura one I mentioned. I’m trying to figure out what to do with it but so far it’s “Pidge and Allura fall in love, Keith attempts to learn to people.” WHO KNOWS maybe the new seasons will knock something loose.
And OH BOY do I have some K-drama recs for you:
Coffee Prince - I think everybody gets started with Coffee Prince because it’s fairly easy to get into, it’s not super angsty, and even though the main dude is a bit of an asshole--the main dudes usually are--he gets over it. Basic plot is a girl gets mistaken for a boy and ends up with a job at a coffee shop staffed entirely by guys. She also discovers a passion for being a barista, in addition to falling for the owner of the shop...who is the one who thinks she’s a guy. It’s basically a coffee shop AU. It’s delightful.
Faith - A modern-day doctor gets pulled back to Korea’s past when the head of the king’s guard comes through a time portal looking for a legendary doctor to save the queen’s life. BOATLOADS of political intrigue, a dash of magic, angst and fluff and people you like die and people you hate die and ultimately, there’s a happy ending. This one was like...so much of my catnip; I loved it. I need to rewatch it soon.
City Hunter - Are you looking for a modern-day drama filled with vigilante justice where a masked hero takes down corrupt politicians? That’s City Hunter. Said vigilante hero in this drama is played by the same actor who was the captain of the king’s guard in Faith, and I adore him to pieces. The female lead is a girl who’s just basically gotten into Korea’s version of the Secret Service, so she often ends up being assigned to protect the very politicians the male lead is going after. Throw in a pretty prosecutor and a very awesome veterinarian who knows how to keep secrets and you have the recipe for a great action-oriented drama. There’s ONE death in this series that I entirely ignore, but everything else is A+.
Mary Stayed Out All Night - I fucking loved this drama, okay. See, Mary’s dad is in loads of debt and he meets an old friend who’s very wealthy and agrees to pay off his debt, if Mary will marry his son, Jung In. So Mary’s dad agrees to this, tells Mary she’s getting married, and she goes “oh hell no I’m not.” So she talks this guy she ran over with her car--Mu Gyul, and I swear it makes sense in context--into posing for pictures with her where she’s in a wedding dress and he’s in a tux. (Actually, I think their friends come up with this idea. Their friends are...not great.) So she shows these pictures to her dad and says “Sorry, Dad, whirlwind romance, I’m already married, please leave me alone and let me finish school” and he goes “...yeah I basically already signed you up for a marriage license.”
And there’s no way for her to get out of that without 1) a divorce and 2) sending her dad to jail for fraud, but she also REALLY doesn’t want to be in an arranged marriage. So what does she do? She tells her dad to give her 100 days where she’ll practice being married to both guys and make a choice at the end of it.
What follows is an absolute delight, because Mary has great chemistry with both Mu Gyul and Jung In, and the boys have great chemistry with each other, and really all together they make a functional adult. It doesn’t end with canon OT3, but you definitely get a lot of fodder for that particular ship and it’s PRETTY CLEAR the actors were totally on board.
The Moon Embracing the Sun - This is another historical, and I am not even going to try to summarize it because it’s so plotty and so much is going on and it’s so good. The very, very short version is: the crown prince falls in love with Yeon Woo and wants to marry her. Unfortunately, his conniving grandmother has another candidate for crown princess in mind and she does not like Yeon Woo at all. And grandmother is willing to do whatever it takes to get Yeon Woo out of the picture. However, another character has, for reasons, pledged to keep Yeon Woo safe and how she goes about that is just...wow. WOW. The characters are fantastic, the sets and costumes are gorgeous, and the story is so, so good. It’s very angsty, but there is a happy ending.
Miss Panda and Mr. Hedgehog - I’m not finished with this one yet but HOLY SHIT I love it. Baking! Found families! A prickly hero with a heart of gold! A sweet plucky female lead 100% determined to make her cafe succeed! Good friends who give good advice! Great sibling relationships! A super cute main romance! I just adore everything about this show and I’m so excited to see how it wraps up.
I think that’s....almost every one I’ve seen over the past couple of years. XD My friends screen them for me before I watch (because I refuse to watch anything where everybody dies at the end) and so far they’ve been really good at picking ones they know I’ll enjoy. :-)
