first off, thanks @more-than-tender-curiosity for getting this clip!
second off. second off… hoo boy. TWO INSTANCES OF JAY.
alan also sounds like he’s bouta cry which. yea. hugging him. he deserves hugs.
the natsby vibes in this? god. what did we do to deserve this—“why don’t you forget about her?”
the flinch. i am going to talk about the flinch. alan Hated gunshots. you can see this in the start of 1949, and also in a few other movies—Shane being a great example, when Shane shows off his gun to Joey. but why would he flinch here? there’s no gun—it’s just macdonald carey’s hand. is it a character thing or his acting? i don’t know, to be honest, and i desperately want to. he’d been punched in several other films by this point—The Blue Dahlia and The Glass Key, certainly, come to mind. but it’s just carey’s hand. i would say that the flinch—and the reasoning behind it—is probably up for personal interpretation.
and then. “LET/LEAVE ME ALONE.” i can’t very well tell if it’s let or leave me alone, and both would fit just fine. but his voice—his voice. i can’t remember exactly which other movies alan raised his voice in, perhaps The Carpetbaggers? but anyhow, it’s the same in 1949 as it is in whatever other movie he raised his voice for. it’s not bad, honestly.
and also the music at the end. movie composers in the 40s and 50s… i desperately think there should be more recognition of 40s & 50s movie composers.

- Oh, what's the matter with you two? Do you always have to talk about killing people? - We're not talking about killing people. Herb's talking about killing me and I'm talking about killing him. - It's your father's way of relaxing. - Can't he find some other way to relax?

TRIVIA:
English Gothic Punk band, 'The Damned' took their name from this film.
I got the special edition Bluray from Powerhouse/Indicator films. I saw it about 10 years ago from a DVD collection I borrowed from the library. It was HAMMER FILMS but suspense films not they're usual horror.
It was a strangely stark and striking film even with film standards and ethics of the day. I would even compare it to an early 60s precursor to A Clockwork Orange, but with creepy children.
This is also the final "creepy kids" themed film for this Halloween's movie marathon, but not the end of the marathon itself.
Previously I watched Children of the Damned, Village of the Damned, and John Carpenter's Children of the Damned remake. (P.s. They have no connection to this film)

we could have had laddsby in color;
or, the post where i say how unfair it is that we didn’t get alan ladd in color in the great gatsby (1949) and explain that it could have, in fact, been a thing
tgg 1949 was left to sit eighteen months before its release on july 13, 1949. eighteen months before july 1949 -> january 1948
in 1948, whispering smith was released, another film starring alan ladd. that movie is in color! when was it filmed, you asked? filming for that one started in april of 1947. it was released december 9 of the next year.
paramount announced plans for tgg in march 1946, and the book, being what it was, was censored for the movie, due to the hayes code. the script was good to go in october 1947, well after filming of whispering smith
so. being that it was delayed for eighteen months, it was filmed between october 1947 and january 1948, why didn’t it end up in color?
who knows. i can’t find an answer anywhere, but it’s rather upsetting that i can’t.
