‘Critically important’ for Duke football program to improve
‘Critically important’ for Duke football program to improve
Charlotte Changes throughout college athletics, amplifying the importance of revenue driven largely from football, only served to further drive home the point that Duke football needed major changes. The Blue Devils have lost 17 of their past 18 ACC games over the past two seasons, a big reason why David Cutcliffe and his staff were let go and Mike Elko was hired last December. With the SEC and…

What is the hottest thing you have ever imagined about Coach Patterson that isn't just sex?
I throw a pool party and GP is one of the guests, as well as all the coaches I like (Gary Patterson, Sonny Dykes, Mack Brown, Gregg Popovich, Brian Kelly, Barry Hinson, Mike Scioscia, Chip Kelly, Kevin Wilson, Mike Elko, Pat Narduzzi, Mark Stoops, John Fields, Mike McCarthy). All the coaches are in the backyard, eating barbeque and drinking beers, shirtless and only wearing sheer shorts of varying light pastel colors, blues, pinks, yellows, and whites, with GP wearing white. We get to watch him dive into the pool and come out like Phoebe Cates, from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” and that pool scene. Instead of showing him from the waist up, like her, we get to see him in all his thicc daddy-bear gorgeousness. We watch him walk a bit, wet chest hair stuck down to his thick pecs and belly, his package, swaying side to side, clearly visible through his sheer white shorts before he slowly removes them and tosses them aside... Mmm...

Duke: 2023 Birmingham Bowl Champions
Tumblr media
Todd Pelino kicked three field goals and Duke relied mostly on defense to defeat Troy 17-10 in the Birmingham Bowl on Saturday in Birmingham, Ala., where interim coaches guided both teams.
Troy didn’t score until the second half but made a game of it until a late interception doomed the Trojans’ final chance.
Pelino had second-quarter field goals from 34 and 37 yards, including the latter on the last play of the first half. Combined with Jaylen Coleman’s 1-yard run late in the first quarter and Nicky Dalmolin’s two-point conversion run, the Blue Devils carried a 14-0 lead to halftime.
Quarterback Grayson Loftis finished the game 19-for-29 for 183 yards with an interception for the Blue Devils.
Duke (8-5) received 73 rushing yards from running back Jaquez Moore and 66 yards from running back Jordan Waters.
Troy quarterback Gunnar Watson completed 21 of 36 passes for 230 yards, and running back Kimani Vidal gained 79 yards on 17 carries. The Trojans (11-3), the Sun Belt Conference champions, had a 10-game winning streak end.
Both teams saw their previous coaches depart for other jobs after the regular season. Mike Elko left Duke to go to Texas A&M, while Jon Sumrall departed Troy for the Tulane position.
Trooper Taylor, the running backs coach, was in charge for Duke. Defensive coordinator Greg Gasparato oversaw Troy.
Troy finally got on the board on Scott Taylor Renfroe’s 44-yard field goal with 1:36 remaining in the third quarter. That capped a 10-play, 53-yard drive.
After Pelino’s 45-yarder with 13:29 remaining, the Blue Devils made a fourth-down stop that seemed critical at the time.
But Damaje Yancey’s interception gave the Trojans the ball back. They got going and moved 87 yards in 10 plays to score on Derrick Graham’s 2-yard run with 5:54 left.
Troy forced a Duke punt and started their last possession at its own 11-yard line with 1:40 left. Two plays later, Jeremiah Lewis intercepted Watson as Duke sealed the outcome to push its bowl winning streak to five games.

Relix Presents: Yonder Mountain String Band, Railroad Earth, and Keller Williams & The Keels Live at The Eastern!
What more can I say except Atlanta loves their bluegrass and jam bands? On April 11th, Yonder Mountain String Band (YMSB) announced a Fall tour presented by Relix for later in 2023 that would feature Railroad Earth and Keller & the Keels (Keller Williams and Larry & Jenny Keel). I am here to tell you from experience that this is one of the best bluegrass/jam/jamgrass tours of 2023! Not only did Relix snag Yonder Mountain String Band and Railroad Earth, but they also got Keller & The Keels to come along for this wild and crazy ride. It is not often that a tour comes around that features so much talent and musical experience between all the touring bands on this bill.
My girlfriend and I knew that we would be attending the tour stop at The Eastern in Atlanta no matter what. So, we quickly purchased tickets when this show was announced just in case I was not approved for photography. Between the crossover of musical genres between all three bands and the eclectic fanbase that attends these shows, I knew that this was going to be a memorable night of Flatpicking and dancing for us all. The vibe with the crowd was at an all-time high from the time the door opened for those who waited patiently in line outside the venue.
Kicking off the festivities, Keller and The Keels is a supergroup formed by combining the powers of Keller Williams with Larry and Jenny Keel. Keller & The Keels have released three (3) LPs together since 2006 with Speed being their last release in 2019. What makes this tour special for me is that this little supergroup decided to reunite for this tour with other amazing and very talented musicians.
Keller Williams is a bluegrass/folk/alt-rock/jazz/funk/reggae/electronica/dance singer/songwriter from Virginia who has been performing since 1991. Keller has released seventeen (17) LPs, two (2) Live albums, one (1) children's album, and eight (8) collaboration albums. This would be my first time watching Keller perform live and I know I have missed out on some great shows.
Larry Keel, with his wife and bassist Jenny Keel, are Bluegrass royalty and have been performing together in various bands over the years. I have seen The Keels perform previously and sometimes even when it was just Larry joining someone else on stage. Regardless of the times, I am a big fan of the Keels and all the performances that I have witnessed. Tonight would be no different. This would be one of my favorite sets of the night hands down. Especially near the end of this blistering set when Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth) and Dave Johnston (YMSB) came on stage to join Keller & The Keels to create some magic for the fans! I hope that we can get another Keller & The Keels tour sooner rather than later. A dream tour would be Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway with Keller & The Keels co-headline tour.
Follow this link to check out Chris Griffy’s album review of Speed by Keller & The Keels exclusively over on Concerthopper.com.
Next up, Railroad Earth is a folk rock/progressive bluegrass/Americana/jam band from New Jersey that formed back in 2001. Currently, the band consists of Todd Sheaffer (guitar/harmonica/vocals), Tim Carbone (violin/accordion/electric guitar/vocals), John Skehan (mandolin/bouzouki/piano/banjo/vocals), Carey Harmon (drums/hand percussion/vocals), and Dave Speranza (acoustic bass/electric bass/vocals). While on tour, Mike Robinson (acoustic guitar/steel pedal/banjo) and Matthew Slocum (keyboards) also lend a helping hand in melting the faces of everyone who comes to their shows. We got to see Railroad Earth on tour at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Ga. back on May 10th, so I can say that I was well prepared for what the crowd was witnessing during their incredible set. I was very happy that they started off the night with “Elko” and “Slippin’ Away” back-to-back. By the end of their set, their diverse mix of bluegrass mixed with rock and country kept the crowd happily dancing along with their music.
Check out Railroad Earth’s set list from this night at The Eastern below:
·      “Elko”
·      “Slippin’ Away”
·      “Old Man and the Land”
·      “Potter’s Field”>
·      “Mourning Flies”
·      “Dandelion Wine”
·      “Any Road”>
·      “Walk Beside Me”
Finally, Yonder Mountain String Band (YSMB) is a progressive bluegrass band (also can be described as jamgrass) from Colorado that started in 1998. The band consists of Ben Kaufmann (bass/vocals), Dave Johnston (banjo/vocals), Adam Aijala (guitar/vocals), and Nick Piccininni (multi-instrumentalist/vocals). According to Discogs.com, YMSB has released nineteen (19) LPs, one (1) EP, and has been featured in one (1) compilation. I knew that the night was going to end on a great note when YMSB opened their set with a Marc Anthony cover of “I Need to Know”. Between their progressive bluegrass jams to their foot-stomping traditional bluegrass tunes, to me, YMSB is one of the best jamgrass bands on the touring circuit today. The night ended with an epic all-star jam of “Dancin’ in the Moonlight” featuring Tim Carbone, Larry Keel, Matt Slocum, and Carey Harmon.
Check out YMSB’s fiery set list from The Eastern (09/22/2023) below:
·     “I Need to Know” *
·     “Just the Same”
·     “On Your Dime”
·     “Used to Call Me Baby”

·  “On the Run” > “Mother’s Only Son” > “On the Run"

Dukes head basketball coach
Tumblr media
Among the running backs, Jordan Waters is a name to watch as the second leading back last season as he now enters his junior season with the opportunity to step into the huge shoes of Durant.ĭefensively, the secondary is similarly inexperienced as UVA’s is heading into 2022 with a few returning veterans - safety Jaylen Stinson most notably - but with the necessity of young players stepping up to ideally out-perform last year’s veterans. The offensive line should be the strength of the team with a number of key returners filling starting spots and a few transfers adding depth. Sophomore quarterbacks Leonard and Moore are in competition for the starting job but could likely each play a part in the Duke offense with Leonard more talented as a passer and Moore better as a runner.īobo’s departure weakens the team’s receiving corps, but Jalon Calhoun should step into the #1 role fairly well with a few other guys including Eli Pancoli and Darrell Harding Jr. In their first season with Elko at the helm, there are plenty of questions on either side of the ball for the Blue Devils. Key new faces: HC Mike Elko, OG Andre Harris (Arkansas State), OT Chance Lytle (Colorado) Key departures: QB Gunnar Holmberg, WR Jake Bobo, RB Mataeo Durant, S Lummie Young IV, S Jalen Alexander Key returners: QB Riley Leonard, QB Jordan Moore, WR Jalon Calhoun, LT Graham Burton, RG Jacob Monk, RT John Gelotte, DT DeWayne Carter, LB Shaka Heyward, S Jaylen Stinson Elko’s arrival will bring a defensive reset that will need to fully reboot that side of the ball for the Blue Devils to make realistic improvement from 2021. While the offense had Durant to rely on in 2021, the Duke defense was practically Swiss cheese will how many different holes opposing offenses were able to create both on the ground and through the air. Meanwhile quarterback Gunnar Holmberg and leading receiver Jake Bobo have each hit the transfer portal. Durant set the school’s record for single-season rushing with 1,241 yards on the season. The team was led by running back Mataeo Durant who is now gone and is now trying to make it in the NFL. The team did proceed to pull off three straight wins over North Carolina A&T, Northwestern, and Kansas.īut, then, ACC play started and the Devils from Durham went 0-8 the rest of the way including a horrific 48-0 shellacking at the hands of your Virginia Cavaliers. Losing to Charlotte in game one, 31-28, set the tone for a campaign to forget for Blue Devils fans (of which, for football, there are few). 2021 Recapĭuke’s 2021 season got off to a poor start and never truly got back on track. Former defensive coordinator at Wake Forest, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M,Mike Elko has now taken over the reins in Durham with the hopes of turning around a program that has been in the dumps in recent years. Another ACC Coastal squad with a new head coach this fall, the Duke Blue Devils enter 2022 with plenty of question marks and a roster picked last in the division preseason poll.

Texas A&M targeting Duke’s Mike Elko as Aggies’ next head coach: Sources
Texas A&M is targeting Duke’s Mike Elko as its next head coach, two sources briefed on the hiring process told The Athletic. Here’s what you need to know: Elko is 16-9 in two seasons as Duke’s head coach and spent 2018-21 as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator. The Aggies fired head coach Jimbo Fisher amid a 7-5 campaign that included seven consecutive losses in games decided by one score and a…

2022 ACC Coaching Power Rankings
Tumblr media
It’s that time of year again. We’re looking at each head coach and seeing how he stacks up against his peers across each league. We always start alphabetically with the ACC. Here’s a link to last year’s rankings if you want to compare.
Oh yeah and Notre Dame is also here because I have no good place to put the Irish.
-
We saw several head coaches cycle through the league this season, so there will be some upheaval in the rankings. The ACC remains one of the weakest Power 5 conferences, there is always some fluctuations going on in the league.
Tumblr media
15. Marcus Freeman
Record at Notre Dame: 0-1
Movement: N/A
Marcus Freeman was brought in under Brian Kelly just last year as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator. It’s quite the vote of confidence to see Freeman succeed Kelly so soon. Time will tell what Freeman will bring to the job, but he’s inherited quite the machine from Kelly.
Tumblr media
14. Mike Elko
Record at Duke: N/A
Movement: N/A
Mike Elko comes to Duke via Texas A&M, where he served as Jimbo Fisher’s DC for the past four seasons. Elko is a step removed from Marcus Freeman, having served as Notre Dame DC under Kelly in 2017, though he came up with Dave Clawson at Bowling Green and Wake Forest. It’s a good pedigree, can it turn things around in Durham?
Tumblr media
13. Brent Pry
Record at Virginia Tech: N/A
Movement: N/A
Brent Pry was James Franklin’s longtime DC at Penn State and Vanderbilt, a partnership dating all the way back to 2011. Pry inherits a Virginia Tech program desperate to reclaim their lost glory. They’re still in a strong position to rebound to Frank Beamer’s lofty heights if the right guy can come through Blacksburg. Let’s see if Pry is the man.
Tumblr media
12. Tony Elliott
Record at Virginia: N/A
Movement: N/A
Our last brand new coach is Tony Elliott, who comes to Virginia via Clemson. Elliott has spent 10 years in Dabo’s program, picking up knowledge he’ll be eager to transmit to his new squad.
Tumblr media
11. Geoff Collins
Record at Georgia Tech: 9-25 Overall Record: 24-35
Movement: Up 4 spots
It isn’t going well. Geoff Collins moved up 4 spots on the list but that’s because four guys ahead of him left their jobs and the new hires are all brand new head coaches. The rebuild is off to a horrible start. The Yellow Jackets were supposed to be improving by now, but Georgia Tech looks as bad as they ever have under Collins. I don’t think he’s going to be in Atlanta very long unless GA Tech starts winning immediately.
Tumblr media
10. Jeff Hafley
Record at Boston College: 12-11
Movement: Up 3 spots
Boston College continues to show signs of life under Hafley. The Eagles were a bit inconsistent in 2022, but there seems to be room to grow.
Tumblr media
9. Mike Norvell
Record at Florida State: 8-13 Overall Record: 46-28
Movement: Up 5 spots
It has been a weird half-decade for Florida State. The Seminoles have been kicked and pushed around in a way we’re not used to seeing. Still, improvement is improvement and FSU started looking like they’d found their footing towards the end of the year. The results Florida State fans want to see still haven’t come. Norvell won’t move higher up this list if they don’t start bowling right now.
Tumblr media
8. Mario Cristobal
Record at Miami FL: 0-0 Overall Record: 62-60
Movement: N/A
Miami was able to land their white whale when they finally poached native son Mario Cristobal from Oregon. Cristobal is a Hurricane diehard and he’s going to put his all into making sure The U sees its third act. Whether he can achieve this lofty goal is hard to say, but he did good work in Eugene. He led the Ducks to two PAC-12 championships and another North Division title in 2021.
Tumblr media
7. Dino Babers
Record at Syracuse: 29-43 Overall Record: 66-59
Movement: Up 4 spots
Sometimes outlasting guys gets you pretty high up the list. Dino Babers did turn Syracuse around a bit in 2022, they won 5 games as opposed to just 1 in 2021. Whether Babers can once again take the Orange to a bowl and beyond is up for debate. The 10 win season in 2018 is feeling like a long time ago.
Tumblr media
6. Scott Satterfield
Record at Louisville: 18-19 Overall Record: 69-43
Movement: Up 4 spots
It’s actually pretty impressive to move up this high when your team hasn’t done all that well with you at the helm. Once again, I blame coaching turnover in the conference. Satterfield also alienated most of the Louisville program when it became clear he tried to leave, so I don’t know how long he’ll stick around, especially with a .500 record. At the moment I think the Cardinals are biding their time until his buyout is cheaper.
Tumblr media
5. Dave Doeren
Record at NC State: 64-49 Overall Record: 87-53
Movement: Down 1 spot
Ok, now that we’re in the top 5 the competition starts to heat up. Dave Doeren actually moves down in the rankings despite NC State putting up an impressive 9-3 record. That’s the breaks when you’ve become one of the top coaches in a power conference. The Wolf Pack came very close to landing their first ever division title, and things are as wide open as possible for them to go for the gold this year.
Tumblr media
4. Pat Narduzzi
Record at Pittsburgh: 53-37 Division Titles: 2 (2018, 2021) Conference Titles: 1 (2021)
Movement: Up 5 spots
It was a down year for Clemson, so somebody was going to break through, but few would have guessed it was going to be Pitt. The Panthers came out of nowhere to claim their first ever ACC Championship. Narduzzi slowly built Pittsburgh back into a contender. We’ll see if he can keep them at that level, but the Pitt program continues to slowly trend upwards.
Tumblr media
3. Dave Clawson
Record at Wake Forest: 51-48 Overall Record: 141-127 Division Titles: 1 (2021)
Movement: Up 2 spots
It really shouldn’t be possible to do this well at Wake Forest. Rebuild expert Dave Clawson has returned the lowly Demon Deacons back to football prominence. Wake had an outstanding 11-3 season last year. While it’s unrealistic to expect to see that kind of output every season, Clawson is certainly the man to keep Wake Forest as competitive as they can be. This is literally the best football Wake has ever played, they can’t fire this guy.
Tumblr media
2. Mack Brown
Record at North Carolina: 90-63-1 Overall Record: 265-139-1 National Championships: 1 (2005)
Movement: Up 1 spot
Mack Brown moves up one spot thanks to Brian Kelly’s departure. It was supposed to be a better 2021 season than 6-7 for North Carolina. Does Mack still have the magic? We’ll see, UNC is at least recruiting like they’re aiming to win championships. Mack knows that’s half the battle.
Tumblr media
1. Dabo Swinney
Record at Clemson: 150-36 Division Championships: 8 (2009, 2011-12, 2015-2019) Conference Championships: 7 (2011, 2015-2020) National Championships: 2 (2016, 2018)
Movement: same
Yeah I mean he’s not going to move down just because Clemson didn’t win the ACC this year. Dabo Swinney is one of the most accomplished coaches in college football and most of the other guys on this list don’t even come close to sniffing Swinney’s achievements. Clemson remains the odds-on favorite to win the ACC every year.
