“He’s Just Ken”: An Analysis of Plastic Professionals

so the barbie movie posters led me down a rabbit hole that i’m thrilled to share with y’all. i wondered... is ken really “just ken”? what are his careers like, as opposed to the eternal, ever-working barbie? and how is ken gendered in opposition to and in company with the plastic princess?

part one: career statistics, or, grind on my mind

the era i chose to focus on for this was 1980-2000. this is for a couple reasons--it’s the barbie era i’m most familiar with, it has a good amount of documentation, and most importantly, ken is present throughout all 20 years. if i focused on the earlier years of barbie, ken doesn’t show up until partway through; if i focused on the 2000s-2020s, say, ken is missing for a good handful of those years as well. in addition, these 20 years were the ones where barbie’s jobs became more of a focus; the early barbie years were far more focused on the fashion dream, and it was in the early 80s that the “we girls can do anything” slogan showed that mattel was pushing the brand to be about career and life goals, too.

let’s take a look at the charts...

these are the approximate numbers of barbie dolls released every year from 1980-2000, along with which dolls had a career and which dolls did not. i was a little loose with the data; “ballerina” counts as a career, while “princess” does not. in addition, i counted any doll named Barbie; this includes barbies who are of different ethnicities. barbie’s friends like kira and siblings like stacey did not count.

looking at this chart, it’s pretty clear that dolls without careers outnumber the ones with them. however, this is the case for most playline dolls, and one must also take into account the amount of collector’s releases that naturally tend more towards designer fashion instead. 1998 is an interesting year because there was a line of NBA basketball barbies released; this jacked up the career number significantly. sports is absolutely a job!

now, let’s have a look at ken:

less ken dolls are released yearly. this is just a fact. as much as it’s a joke, ken really is a barbie accessory, and he has been for a long time. he’s no gi joe with his own line--he’s meant to be barbie’s boyfriend, not really his own person. what’s interesting, however, is the proportion of ken dolls with careers vs. barbie dolls. even taking into account the fact less ken dolls are released, more ken dolls have careers than barbie dolls.

here, let me show you some pie charts for a better idea:

“this still isn’t a fair comparison!” i hear you cry. i get it! i understand! it was very bizarre for me to see this, too. proportionally, 6% isn’t a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but it’s still... weird to see ken having a greater number of dolls with careers than barbie.

which led me to look at the second part of this analysis.

part two: gender roles, or, i am a girl like you

barbie and ken are heavily gendered in a societally-’appropriate’ fashion. this is obvious from the brand’s marketing, from the girl toys aisle being named the ‘pink aisle’ in honour of the famed ‘barbie pink’, from how much the barbie line focuses on fashion and style. but... the careers barbie and ken have. how much are these gendered, exactly?

n.b.: i’m trans and queer so the next few categories might seem weird to some, but i grew up in a ciscentric society with a ciscentric view of gender roles, so here we are.

i divided the job categories into three types: traditionally masculine jobs: things like the army, an astronaut, a doctor. if your first image when you think of the job is a man, it goes here. traditionally feminine jobs: things like a skater, a ballerina, a teacher. same as above--if you think of a woman first, it goes here. gender neutral jobs: this might be a hazy category, but jobs like singer/rock star, veterinarian, and movie star go here. these jobs are less or entirely ungendered in north american society, and therefore one might think of a man or woman equally.

(i totally changed the fem jobs to pink because well. it’s barbie)

this is where things got interesting for me. barbie and ken both have a very high percentage of traditionally masculine jobs. It’s less surprising that ken has more neutral-leaning jobs than feminine, and barbie has more feminine than neutral, but the amount of traditionally masculine jobs barbie herself has surprised me. despite knowing full well how many jobs barbie has had over the years, it still surprised me that jobs like paratrooper and doctor dominated over jobs like fashion designer and ballet dancer.

part three: conclusions, or, there’s nothing we can’t do

so what can we draw from this?

firstly: ken may be an accessory, but he isn’t really just ken. proportionally, he has about the same number of jobs as barbie per release, if not more. he’s not the himbo hanging off barbie’s arm we’ve all been led to believe he is by the memes and jokes, even if it is still funny to call him barbie’s trophy husband/boyfriend. he might be ‘just ken’, but ‘just ken’ is as capable as barbie is on his best days.

secondly: barbie herself is not as highly gendered in terms of workplace environments as one might think. she’s a legally blonde type; she might be pink and pretty, but that doesn’t mean she’s to be underestimated. mattel has given her a higher percentage of traditionally masculine jobs than might be usual for a playline doll directed at girls, and i genuinely have to applaud them for that. barbie is for every girl, even the ones who don’t have traditionally feminine interests.

i was born and raised to be a basketball enjoyer, and i very much am though i don't follow any level of basketball anywhere near as closely as i follow hockey! but i went to nba games with my parents when i was a little kid (foundational experience) and watched a lot of college basketball throughout my childhood and teens. (ncaa tournament on the tv in school also a foundational experience.)

i went through a flirtation with soccer fandom in the mid-aughts but it really didn't stick, beyond the level at which i can be convinced to watch most sports at least a little bit. really the only thing i've never been able to get psyched about even a little bit is like ... physical fighting sports? wrestling, boxing, mma, that kind of thing. golf does not compel me. tennis is just okay. volleyball too. (more fun to play than to watch, tho.) (it's possible i still have some deep-seated volleyball annoyance from years of incessant beach volleyball primetime nbc olympics broadcasts, bc the us was good at it but also a little bit like, is this just because it's women in bikinis?)

i go a little out of my way to not watch (american) football, because of ethical and health concerns regarding the sport, but not leave the room if it's on levels of effort. i can be compelled by the narratives of football, but i feel guilty about it. otherwise you can sell me just about anything with a good narrative but in terms of me making an effort to actually watch, other than hockey it's pretty much unc basketball, the olympics, occasionally the nba playoffs (my hometown nba team has not made the playoffs in more years than we need to mention but i will root for golden state in the playoffs on account of steph curry being my hometown's designated special basketball boy).

i do not feel particularly romantic about baseball. it's fun to watch in person tho.

The Black community has unfortunately seen a plethora of our favorite celebrities making terrible decisions this year. While many of these celebs have apologized and worked towards making things right, others are firmly standing in their controversies. Here’s who had a rough 2022.

Kanye West

Kanye West was canceled by nearly everybody in his life this year, including his family, friends, brands, and fans. In October 2022, West wore a “White Lives Matter” t-shirt to a Yeezy fashion show and when he was criticized by the Black Vogue editor, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, he took to the internet mocking her and causing some celebrities and people in the fashion industry to voice their disapproval of his actions. He also doubled down on the “White Lives Matter” beliefs,sparking a friendship with Candace Owens to condemn the Black Lives Matter movement. Kanye also spent much of the year bringing his family drama to social media, airing out the complications with his ex-wife Kim Kardashian. Kanye West was canceled by Instagram and Twitter after sharing anti-semitic views, and his accounts were restricted and locked. Kanye’s anti-semitism led to his ultimate downfall this year as he lost deals with Vogue, Balenciaga, Gap, and Adidas.

Dave Chapelle

Dave Chapelle spent 2022 feeling the effects of his transphobic and homophobic comments that he shared in his comedy special, “The Closer”, released in 2021. In July 2022, First Avenue in Minneapolis canceled Dave Chapelle’s show only hours before showtime. The venue released a statement that it was prioritizing its staff, and apologized for accepting the offer to host the show. There was also backlash towards SNL for allowing him to host an episode in November.

Tiffany Haddish

Tiffany Haddish was canceled in August 2022 after she, along with Aries Spears, were sued for child sexual abuse. The children in question were 14 and seven at the time. In September, the accusers dropped the lawsuit “with prejudice.” Haddish claimed that all of her gigs and jobs were taken away due to the lawsuit. In December 2022, Haddish made her first red carpet appearance since the lawsuit for the film Emancipation.

Candace Owens continued with her conservative agenda all year long, with one of the highlights being becoming besties with disgraced music artist and designer, Kanye West. In October 2022, Candace Owens joined West in wearing “White Lives Matter” t-shirts. She even had his back after all of the criticism following West’s doubling down on the movement. In return, he was by her side when she released the film “The Greatest Lie Ever Sold,” a film criticizing the Black Lives Matter movement.

Miles Bridges

NBA Hornets player, Miles Bridges, was canceled for allegedly assaulting his partner, Mychelle Johnson, in front of their two children in June 2022. Bridges pleaded no contest to the domestic violence charge, but agreed to probation time, counseling, parenting classes and community service. As he is a free agent, his future in the NBA in uncertain and he may face disciplinary actions from the league.

Will Smith

Academy Award-winning Will Smith was canceled big time this year after cursing at and slapping comedian Chris Rock for joking about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s lack of hair at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. Following the slap, Hollywood and watchers of the ceremony were split about whether he was right to react the way he did. Smith has since apologized for his actions, but he was banned from attending another Oscars ceremony for 10 years. Allegedly, several projects Smith was working on at the time were put on hold.

Deshaun Watson returned to playing football for the Cleveland Browns after paying a $5 million fine and an 11-game suspension, which was increased from an original 6-game suspension, after being accused by over a dozen women of sexual assault, starting in 2019.

Kyrie Irving

Brooklyn Nets player Kyrie Irving has been canceled for several things in recent years, but his biggest issue in 2022 was sharing an Amazon linkon social media to a movie called “Hebrews To Negro: Wake Up Black America.” The film spread anti-semitic views. Irving was given a list of thingsto do in order to get back in good graces with the NBA, including paying a $500,000 donation, meeting with Jewish leaders, and having anti-semitism training. He has also been dropped by Nike and The Athletic.

Antonio Brown

Antonio Brown has unfortunately not been in the news for positive situations in 2022. He was released by the Buccaneers in January after leaving the field mid-game, and has been getting into trouble ever since. He became the president of Kanye West’s Donda Sports. He broke up with singer Keyshia Cole on Instagram Live in May. It was revealed in October 2022 that Brown exposed himself to a woman in a Dubai hotel pool. In December, an arrest warrant was issued for Brown on a domestic battery charge.

NBA head coach Ime Udoka was canceled this year for cheating on the Black community’s sweetheart, Nia Long. News broke in September 2022 that Udoka was in an intimate relationship with a Celtics organization employee. Udoka has been suspended by the Boston Celtics for the entire 2022-2023 season.

Liz Cambage

In 2022 WNBA star Liz Cambage was accused of calling Nigerian national basketball team members “monkeys” and of telling them to go back to their country in 2021 while playing for the Australian Opals national team. Cambage announced in August that she will be stepping away from the WNBA.

Clarence Thomas

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas isn’t new to the hate train and this year he was not exempt. In June, Thomas voted to strike down Roe v. Wade. While Americans panicked, he also added that he intended to challenge same-sex marriage and contraception rulings. He also falsely claimed that the Covid-19 vaccine contained aborted fetus cells.

NFTs face major investment challenges

The valuation of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) became a hot topic earlier this year when digital artist Beeple sold an NFT for nearly $70 million.

The high prices in these sales and many other businesses make the job of accountants difficult. How valuable is an NFT that is on a company’s balance sheet, written by an individual, or even owned by a digital artist and ready to be sold?

As with many current assets, the answers to these questions are not easy, and they present some difficult questions for CPAs to consider.

The NFT market is new and growing. NFT is a digital crypto instrument. They are digital symbols that represent and determine the ownership and authenticity of assets.

In March, the blockchain entrepreneur purchased Beeple’s digital collage files at a Christie’s auction for more than $69 million, making it the first NFT digital image sold by the auction house. The third highest price paid for a work by an artist is paid by a major auction house.

One reason for the popularity of NFTs is that they offer a way for artists and creators to assert their rights to ensure that their NFTs are redeemed or used only as directed and are protected from future charges.

People have raised questions about the high prices of some NFTs as images appear to have been copied from public websites and used without paying. However there are special rules for assets, such as driving the market and increasing the value of NFTs. Buyers purchase NFTs for speculation and/or investment.

What is NFT?

NFTs are created (minted) from digital assets that represent intangible and intangible assets. Each NFT has a unique digital signature, proving that the asset is unique and unchangeable.

Blockchain technology is used to create tokens that can be sold and traded. Information regarding ownership of NFTs is stored and transmitted in this digital file. Competitive Analysis

Evaluating NFTs is an evolving and complex area due to their nature and new uses. The popularity of NFTs also makes them difficult to value. “Value depends on owner and buyer opinion, scarcity, access, and distribution,” Massey said. “NFTs have no physical limitations and have greater visibility and efficiency because they can be instantly accessed and distributed worldwide.”

NFT creators, buyers, and owners differ in the discretion available at the beginning of their lives. It continues because these assets are included on the balance sheet and are subject to review by financial analysts. The value of the NFT at the time of creation will depend on the creator and the characteristics of the NFT, among other things.

For example, the broader market and recognition of famous artists will impact the value of their NFTs more than those of other unknown artists. However, until the NFT is sold, its potential impact on price may be highly speculative. “The value of NFT is based on third-party transactions between buyers and sellers,” Massey said. “If an NFT is purchased through a cryptocurrency marketplace, the value of the asset will be determined by the price of the cryptocurrency used at the time of the transaction because it is easier to determine fair market value.”

Larson notes that this is not the case. It is easy to determine who the next buyer will be or to get information about why they want to pay. Price depends on understanding from time to time.

“If the NFT of art is traded and value increases, the price will increase, but at some point, buyers will decide they can view the digital images on their phones or computers for free, and nothing new will happen.” Does this mean the NFT value is now zero?” Larsen asked.

Traditional NFTs may not have third-party transactions. Sales of other similar NFT holders can be used as data points. Since the value of digital assets can fluctuate widely, the date and time of the valuation are important.

Many CPAs cannot and will not currently value NFTs, and there are very few valuation firms that value digital assets. For art NFTs, the art market may be measured based on the selling price of an artist’s painting or other work of art.

“NFTs are new, and there aren’t many comparable products right now, but one day there will be more,” DiMichael said. A new area of consideration is whether a digital representation of an asset is more valuable than the asset itself and whether there can be multiple digital images of the same asset.

Accounting for NFTs

There is currently no specific guidance in US GAAP on how to account for NFTs. To date, the FASB has decided not to add cryptocurrency and digital asset accounting to its rules. Therefore, the question of whether the asset accounting model is suitable for NFTs arises.

NFTs do not meet GAAP’s definition of cash or cash equivalents, securities, financial instruments, or commodities. “Under the GAAP definition, cryptocurrencies are assets that are not recorded at cost, cannot be written off as increases in value, and are tested for impairment at least once a year,” DiMichael said.

The challenge facing the non-profit model of digital assets is their high volatility and speculative nature. “Profits are always rising, and historical rates are not good for financial consumers,” DiMichael said. “These assets can be sold instantly, and the price of Bitcoin can be checked with a single click on your phone; unlike most other non-value-added assets, the safeguards are more complex and significant, and the assets may or may not be leveraged.”

Financial losses are based on low or fair value. “If there is no business or current business and no comparable property that can be used as a proxy, fair value can be difficult to determine,” Larson said. In addition, different accounting standards apply to investment companies and investment funds that do not own assets. and the NFT must be reported at fair value based on the revenue it generates or similar NFT trading in the market.

There are no GAAP standards for NFTs that specify the accounting at the time the asset is created and whether the costs and expenses associated with the creation (minting) of the NFT until its sale are capitalized or the money is redeemed. A product calculation model can be used. Since it is a digital creation, its price is cheaper, but there may be a cost to putting the NFT on the blockchain and making transactions.

Buyers collect NFTs at a price based on the purchase price. Exchange profits or losses on the cryptocurrency used to pay for the NFT are considered the difference between the fair market value of the cryptocurrency on the date of exchange and the initial payment price.

The name is Isaiah Alexandré Moire, but you can call me Isaa for short, or any other appropriate nickname. This ESTP prefer masculine pronouns, and while I’ll keep the specifics of my age a secret, I can assure you that I’ve reached legal age.
