Inktober Days 22-24

Day 22: "Scratchy"

Saguaro, cholla, prickly pear, pincushion, hedgehog, barrel cactus—how magical are these amazing plants? Iconic, unique, perfectly tuned to their environment. The pleats on a saguaro help it bulge and shrink to accommodate water availability, and the inhospitable trunks provide shelter for desert birds.

Saguaro NP produces some of my favorite educational videos in the system, thanks in part to Feature Fridays with Ranger Freddy Gutiérrez Fernández-Ramírez. Just to add to the scritchy-scratchy theme of this prompt, some of the more unusual videos featuring Ranger Freddy show how to remove jumping cholla barbs from your skin and clothes. Rangers in Saguaro carry hair combs in their first aid kits—and it’s not to fix flat-hat hair!

Day 23: "Celestial"

In recent decades, park managers have come to recognize natural soundscapes and pristine night skies as tangible resources, just like clean air, land, and water. As I was entering the NPS field, a big effort was kicking off to designate certain units as Dark Sky parks, and Big Bend is the king of them all. It has the lowest levels of light pollution of any park in the lower 48 and is famous across the NPS for its breathtaking starscapes.

Protecting natural darkness opens up amazing new opportunities for visitors and rangers. I love assisting with night sky programs, because I remember how I felt when I first traveled away from the greater I-85 corridor and saw my first pristine night sky. It’s a primordial type of magic to see stars unveiled from urban lights and humid haze. And the good news is, unlike other endangered resources, dark skies are salvageable. When towns and cities take steps to reduce their light and air pollution, there’s no slow, agonizing recovery—the stars come right back. They’re just up there, waiting to peek at us again.

Day 24: "Shallow"

I have to confess—I used to look down on Congaree, despite it being the only national park in my home state of South Carolina. I thought of it as muggy, buggy, and a bit boring. But when I was researching wetland habitat for A Field Guide to Mermaids, I was stunned to realize just how special this landscape is. Our country used to be covered in immense floodplain forests along river corridors, but the natural flood cycles that made these lowlands so fertile also meant the land was prized for agriculture. Rivers were straightened, forests were cut down, and the rich soil was planted with crops. Because of this, Congaree protects the largest swathe of bottomland floodplain forest left in the United States.

And it’s a gorgeous park, as well. There’s something evocative and eerie about walking the elevated boardwalks over tea-colored water. Spooky cypress knees reach up through the water like outstretched arms, and several massive national and state champion trees loom up out of the thick forest.

This park may not have the accolades some of the grander, more storied parks have, but I’m proud that it’s my home state’s park and glad that it protects one of the last intact forests of its kind.

HRU Preview: Charlemagne

Not nearly as bad as I expected but still not exactly what I want. I like the parallel to Quirinus's on-crit-trait-effect thing, and it's especially nice that the 5 turn duration means unlike Quirinus there won't be any uptime issues. The star bomb is flat out unnecessary though and he would've been much better off with better NP gain up or....i can't believe I'm saying this, but yeah a small battery would've probably been better. A conditional one preferably, like based on how many X trait you have (paladins, knights, whatever). Also just like Quirinus, we really didn't need another "Crit focused Lancer/Saber with AOE Buster/Quick NP".

Either way, great for Charlie's gimmick, would be a lot better if his gimmick was something more unique rather than just a convuluted way of upping his NP Damage. At least with Quirinus you can use his Roma status with other Roman specific effects, this one is JUST for Charlie and his NP, so....yeah, let's give him wayyyyyyyyyy more! As well as take away one or two things, because Charlie's biggest issue is how redundant his kit is, whether in the sense of regarding himself or regarding how many servants already fill his niches.

Honestly this is only like 70% of what I have planned I'm still probably gonna give him at least 2 passives and definitely an NP rank up but since his official rank up for a skill dropped and people are asking, i'll go ahead and save that for the full write-up and post these now!

Waga rano pokazała pierw 90.7 czyli że niby nie przytyłam a potem 90.9 i tego się trzymam czyli 0.2 na plusie. Dziś byłam u lekarza i mam coś z płucami więc dostałam antybiotyk na 10 dni. Nie wiem jak ja tyle wytrzymam bez chodzenia. Wytrzymałam do 14 i wtedy zjadłam, potem poszłam spać i o 17:30 jako 2 posiłek wypiłam smothie. Nie ciągnie mnie tak do jedzenia jak zazwyczaj bo jestem chora. Dziś miałem wykład od matki że jednak babcia zrobiła dobrze ze zatrzymała ten samochód i nic się nie stało bo ja ja wiele razy upokorzalam czyt. Krzyczałam i wyzywalam jak byłam nastolstka ( początki zaburzeń osobowości) I to jest ok że pomogła mi dotrzeć do domu !!! JA TAK NIE UWAŻAM, POCZUŁAM SIĘ UPOKORZONA I KONIEC!!! Druga sprawa że powinnam iść do psychologa i bym nie czekałam bo to że ojciec po mnie podrzeznia, obraża to też jest przemoc domowa i taki psycholog mi się z mety należy- co do tego mam wątpliwości. Że ma zmienić moje myślenie i odbieranie to jak coś do mnie ktoś mówi w dobrej wierze i że coś robi dla mnie ze to nie z litości choc wiele razy tak było. Np wpychanie się do lekarza poza kolejnością lub dawanie mu miej niż bierze bo się znamy dłużej albo nie za bardzo mnie stać. Wg. Mnie to jest właśnie litość. Oto foto dzisiejszego bilansu.

Oglądanie przez mojego tatę uwagi twn o anorektyczce i później przez mnie anorektycznych tik toków pomagało mi nie jeść. Misja !!! Nie jeść w nocy słodkiej bułki I batonika jak wczoraj.

This is probably close to be as far as he goes at level 70 but he’s so good here. Mine is 9 9 9 however there isn’t anything about his skills coming back that would have saved him here unfortunately because none of them allow him to survive an extra turn

Also I couldn’t get my np in the third turn when the taunt walls died to save my life. Thank you for taking the cards every single time George

The damage is surprisingly not that bad. It is an AOE nonupdraded np but you can land the occasional lucky crit because of his star per turn skill so you do get there with the damage

Like what gets to him really is the lack survivability. If he could survive at least one or two more turns he would’ve won

But he counters this boss really hard. Cleo is all about landing her imperial privilege (which works more often than not when it’s on the aí side lol) and invulnerability when you break the bar and he shits on all that

But she gets debuff cleanse then and that’s when things get bad

I thought about using atlas to get more use of his clown laughter skill after she cleanses it but then I feel like the damage would be too low

Consider that this is apparently a level 85 stage and he’s level 70 9/9/9. If he was even level 80 I believe he could do it already

Which is impressive for aoe but as I said he counters this boss really well

Also I am using black grail. Surprisingly I can get further with it than the Guts CE

This was really fun btw

#this is what I mean when I say lack of survivability is annoying here #he counters the boss better than Babbage but because Babbage actually has survivability (and more reliable crits) Babbage wins even at 70

All the elements of the periodic table in the Kichwa language

Jose E. Andino-Enríquez, Manuel A. Andino-Enríquez, Francis E. Hidalgo-Báez, Sisa P. Chalán-Gualán, Santiago D. Gualapuro-Gualapuro, Simone Belli and Michelle B. Chicaiza-Lema recently published in the Journal of Chemical Education a proposal to adapt the names of the 118 elements of the periodic table to Kichwa (Adaptation of the Periodic Table to Kichwa: An Ecuadorian Native Language; J. Chem. Ed., 2022 99 (1), 211-218, DOI: 10.1021/acs.jchemed.1c00383).

The authors explain that the Kichwa lacks scientific tools to respond to educational needs, triggering the gradual loss of intercultural diversity. To adapt the periodic table to Kichwa, they took into account the different linguistic variations of the language and the opinion of the speakers. This is the adaptation compared to the Spanish version, the language most widely spoken in Ecuador:

Frequency Tables for “Incomeperperson”, “Lifeexpectancy” and “co2emission.”

I decided to run a program for three variables, which are the following:

‘incomeperperson’

‘lifeexpectancy’

‘co2emissions’

Regarding the variable “Income per person” we can notice the vast majority of the values are between 0 and 15000.

As far as “Life expectancy is concerned” we can notice a quite more normal distribution. We can notice values at a lot of different categories (bins)

The same result as with “Income per person” has occurred with “co2 emissions”. On the bottom line, the bins I created did not have a specific pattern. Maybe it is needed to use a specific approach to create bins tailored and depending on the data, in order to acquire a more insightful and comprehensive view of the data distribution.
