Who Did What for Sonic the Hedgehog's 900th Adventure
So the 900th Adventure was basically this years Annual in spirit, but instead of multiple shorter stories, it told one big story, but with the number of writers and art teams that you would get in a multi-story annual anyways. Sure you could easily read the credits, but it's more fun this way. Obviously spoilers ahead so everything past part 1 is is gonna be under a Read More
Part 1 (pages 1-6): Set-up with Tails
Tumblr media
Writer: Ian Flynn (the original main writer on IDW Sonic and post-Metal Virus continues to be one of the main writers, including being the main writer of IDW's Classic Sonic specials. Been with the franchise since becoming a writer for the Archie comics back in '06 and served as the writer for Sonic Frontiers)
Artist: Adam Bryce Thomas (one of the main IDW Sonic artists. been around since the latter half of Archie's reboot)
Colors: Valentina Pinto (initially a secondary colorist whose biggest credit was doing the Imposter Syndrome miniseries, recently seems to have graduated to being one of the main colorists this year)
Part 2 (pages 7-12): Amy and the Orca
Tumblr media
Writer/Artist: Evan Stanley (the other main writer of IDW Sonic post-Metal Virus as well as one of the main artists, been around since late in Archie's pre-reboot era)
Colors: Gigi Dutreix (regular cover artist and occasional inker and has even written a few stories; co-authoring Victory Garden from the 2019 Annual and its follow up Future Growth, which they also colored, and solo-writing The Catalyst from 2020's Annual)
Part 3 (pages 13-18): Knuckles and Metal Sonic
Tumblr media
Writer: Nigel Kitching (one of the main writers of the old UK Sonic the Comic published by Fleetway Editions back in the 90s)
Artist: Mauro Fonseca (regular artist, major credits so far include Sonic Learns to Drive from the 30th Anniversary Special, co-designing Surge & Kit, doing the A-covers for the Imposter Syndrome miniseries, and doing a bunch of stuff in the concurrent and upcoming main book issues. Also relevantly used to be a regular contributor to the Sonic the Comic-Online fan continuation)
Inks: Rik Mack (recent regular inker, being the main inker on Mauro's more recent interior art for the comic as well as inking other artists, most notably on Tails' 30th Anniversary Special. Recently did some coloring on the back-half of issue 61 as well. Also another former StC-O regular)
Colors: Reggie Graham (one of the main colorists on IDW Sonic post-Metal Virus, after having been a regular on covers beforehand, as well as being another former StC-O regular)
Part 4 (pages 19-24): Eggman and his Mech
Tumblr media
Writer: Daniel Barnes (writer of Weapons from the 2022 Annual and the Scrapnik Island miniseries)
Artist/Colors: Min Ho Kim (fairly recent addition of the IDW Sonic crew, being a regular cover artist since Scrapnik #1. Also the character artist on The Murder of Sonic)
Color Assistance: Evan Maly
Part 5 (pages 25-30): Blaze and Cream
Tumblr media
Writer/Artist: Aaron Hammerstrom (regular artist, most prominently being the main artist for IDW's Classic Sonic stuff. Also previously wrote/drew the 2022 Annual story Rough Patch)
Inks: Matt Froese (regular inker, mainly works on Aaron's art. Most notable non-Aaron credits include the two Yardley-drawn issues of Zeti Hunt and the first and last parts of Trial by Fire)
Colors: Nathalie Fourdraine (The 1:10 Retailer Incentive variant cover artist for every issue the main book as well as semi-regularly doing covers for side books. Served as the colorist for the Classic Sonic stories Dr. Eggman's Brithday and Amy's New Hobby, as well as the colors and A covers for the Scrapnik Island miniseries)
Part 6 (pages 31-36): Babylon Rogues & Shadow/Rouge
Tumblr media
Writer: Caleb Goellner (writer of the Team Sonic Racing one-shot, the 2019 Annual story Jet Set Tornado, and the 2020 Annual story Reflections)
Artist: Abby Bulmer (regular cover artist, as well as artist of the 2020 Annual story The Catalyst and the 2022 Annual story Hero Camp. Notably way back in the day was the artist of the very first StC-O story, and her time on 2000 AD often involved her serving as a colorist for Richard Elson, one of the main StC artists.)
Colors: Heather Breckel (IDW MLP's main colorist, who's been a recurring secondary colorist throughout IDW Sonic's run, often filling in for other colorists)
Part 7 (pages 37-40): The Warp Topaz Cave
Tumblr media
Same team (Flynn/Thomas/Pinto) as part 1

Why Fleetways Sonic the Comic deserves a collection release
I want to put forward a case on why Fleetways Sonic the Comic deserves to be re-released as a collection.
Since we've seen discotek pick up AOSTH, I've been hoping to see the British Fleetway Sonic comics get the same level of love because they feel like a piece of lost Sonic media now since the only way to read them is through ether scans or picking up old print comics on eBay for high prices.
Sonic the Comic has some absolutely amazing world building and original ideas along side a touch of that dry humour well known from the UK comic industry at the time. Its sad when people think of Sonic the Comic its just “Oh Evil Super Sonic” because there is so much more there and it sucks Evil Super Sonic is the only thing people really know about STC.
Understandable with the events that shook the archie comics years ago that Sega might be reluctant to dig this stuff up but Nigel Kitching and the entire team that worked on Sonic the Comic are really cool guys and I wager they would be happy to sign off on a collection set and even do some commentaries for it.
It would be wonderful for these stories to be picked up by a new generation as well as having a nice print collection for old time fans to own.
Fleetway brand is owned by Rebellion now who I think have worked alongside Sega in the past so working out rights might not be that bad since the brand is no longer within the hands of Egmont.
It would be a dream for a chance to own copies of these stories and give them the respect they deserve so both old and even new fans can have a chance to rediscover them.
Also would love such a collection to have the other series like Decap attack and the game adaptations but I could understand the mess of rights issues with that but I can dream.
But STC is just as much a part of the Sonic Multiverse as SATAM, AOSTH, IDW and a part of the franchises rich history and it hurts to see it abandoned to history like this while archie got stuff like the Sonic archives and a number of anniversary collections at least before the legal drama happened.
I wouldn't say this is an open letter but I would ask people share it around and even add their own desires or input.

Hi Neil,
Do you remember who was the artist on the two pages of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles you wrote for Comic Relief ? His name is not mentioned in comics FAQ on your site.
I'm pretty sure it was drawn by Nigel Kitching. (But it was thirty four years ago and, as Terry Pratchett liked to say, we've all passed a lot of water since then. so my memory may not be reliable.)

Sonic the Hedgehog's 900th Adventure is out, and I got to draw the story written by Sonic the Comic's Nigel Kitching! Me and Rik and Reggie worked together to try and do a nice story that's a heartfelt pastiche of the vibes of Sonic the Comic.
Tumblr media
Some thoughts after the cut
I got a bunch of pages as reference, not just for stuff like poses, but also how did the Metallix get shaded, how did the mechanical design of locations look, how did effects look, how did panelling work.
I didn't do a perfect job of pastiche-ing Elson, but I think it worked well enough.
Tumblr media
Here's some location planning, the small lab, on multiple angles, so I know where all props are, etc. Normally I prefer more "logical" mechanical design, so the very Jack Kirby-esque tech stuff here was directly referenced from multiple StC bits.
Tumblr media
I also did some studies of poses from Elson's stories but with modern Sonic models. (ignore the Umineko joke Amy and Tails drawing where Amy's holding a sketched hammer but most people interpret it as a syringe lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BTW 2nd time I got to homage this panel from StC Issue 147 (not a Kitching story but an Elson one)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mr. Kitching was a wonder to work with, nice script, very descriptive but also leaving space for leeway in interpretation, etc.
Would enjoy working with again! And I hope you guys enjoy reading it.

How did you feel about the recent 'Sonic's 900th adventure' issue of IDW? Personally I thought the story was a little underwhelming but the callbacks to locations from the games were fun and as a huge Starline fan I loved the little nod to him at the end with the 'Greatness Began Here' carved into the rock.
I liked it, but I did feel like it ended up being a bit underwhelming, mostly because of the note it ended on.
It got hyped up by IDW as this big event celebrating decades of Sonic comics with wildly varying contributions from both old and new contributors, switching between all these crazy visual styles due to the reality-warping effects of the Warp Topaz with some of the best art in any Sonic comic ever. They even got Nigel Kitching and Richard Elson back to make it a big event celebrating Sonic's legacy in comics! It was really singled out as the Sonic comic EVERYONE should read this year.
And then it's all building to... Sonic fighting the Babylon Rogues in a cave? And also Shadow and Rouge show up, and Shadow is smug and annoying? And then Sonic just puts the Warp Topaz back in the cave where Starline found it, and that's it? I was expecting something more creative, or some kind of big reveal or twist at the end. I'm not saying I thought the Freedom Fighters or Tekno would show up (although... well, was I the only one wondering if that might happen, given the focus on Sonic's comic legacy and the reality-warping premise?), but I figured there'd be SOMETHING noteworthy at the end. Maybe that's on me for not keeping my expectations in check
I dunno. It's a fun romp with a lot of extremely cool shit in the preceding pages that makes it more than worthy of checking out, but it ends on the weakest story, and that kind of takes the wind out of its sails. It would've benefited from shuffling things around a bit

HAPPY PRIDE FROM THE IDW SONIC SHOWDOWN! Made it just in time before pride finishes here in the UK, but pride lasts all year around anyway. However you celebrate and whatever flags you use to represent yourselves, I hope you have a good one Here's a little doodle featuring characters from IDW and a few other Sonic comics who have some degree of queer to them, either in the comics, word of god or popular headcanons. I wanted to include more (shout out to Mighty's gay dad and his dinosaur bf from StC!), but ran out of time and space A little more info about each character, in case anyone's curious:
From top left: Tekno the Canary - From Fleetway Sonic the Comic, a character widely embraced by the queer community. In a conclusion to StC written by series writer Nigel Kitching and released on StC:Online, Tekno is revealed to be in a relationship and have a child with Amy Rose. As of this year, Tekno's creator Lew Stringer gave his blessing for fans to think of her as non-binary, even if he himself wrote her as female - leading some fans to embrace Tekno as she/they Gold the Tenrec - From the Archie Sonic Comics, Gold has been stated by creator Evan Stanley to be attracted to women, although Stanley wasn't sure if Gold was strictly bi or gay, which is why I opted to give her the rainbow flag here Tangle & Whisper - As close as we can possibly get to being a couple without officially being a couple. Hopefully one day! I was actually going to use the rainbow flag for them as well, but as of this month's issue, the duo appeared with a lesbian patterned sky in the background, so they got the lesbian flag Dr. Starline - Headcanoned by some to be a transman because his spurs (which are naturally occurring in male platypuses) are artificial. It's also generally accepted (I think??) that his idolising of Eggman may be romantic. I did a poll for which flag to give him and the gay flag won, so he got that one Nite & Don - Our married bird guys! Good for them! Again, I gave them the rainbow pride flag because it hasn't been stated (that I know) if they're gay, bi, pan or otherwise, but they're happy and together either way Sally Acorn (with tiny Nicole!) - My childhood fave from the Archie Comics. This chipmunk is bisexual and there is nothing you can do about it Lanolin the Sheep - Many of us are optimistic that Lanolin might quietly be the trans rep we've been hoping for from Sonic, as she's a girl sheep with horns Cheese the Chao - As chao are non-binary, I included Cheese to represent them, because Cheese is cool Sonic the Hedgehog - A touchstone to many in the community. I included the asexual, aromantic and trans flags in his speed trail, as Sonic won the t-boy swag tournament on tumblr and Sonic/no one was voted the best Sonic ship on tumblr. As a trans aroace person myself, Sonic's lack of interest in romance and conformity was always inspirational to me growing up. The rainbow facepaint is because I'm sure that he's as important to other members of the community in their identities as well As always, these are my readings and takes on these characters that may not align with your own or be canon in anyway. But I hope that you can find joy and peace in pride as I do regardless :3
