Things I noticed on my rewatch: s2 ep3 Part1

This is something I did not notice the first time here but it has to be said again: Zoë Robins is phenomenal as Nynaeve!

something it did notice on rewatch: There are no braid tugs in this ep. and I don't know whether there are any this season and I think they did that deliberately to show that Nynaeve has lost herself. In s2 ep1 the wisdom of the two rivers has forgotten about Bel Tine... and with her time with Ryma Sedai and what happened during the finale it is a great setup for a journey to find herself anew in s3.

they gave her this backstory in s1 and it makes the first arch hit hard emotionally and the third arch even harder eventually, I want to scream and weep with her

the nature locations during the test are stunning! Look at this post if you want to see it and more Laneave in beautiful nature.

I appreciate the plot twist they put into the third arch. Nynaeve saying she will never put the tower over everything and saying goodbye to Egwene felt very real. And the recap at the beginning of the episode shows Lan being sent away by Moiraine to make it even more believable.

Her tests included all the EF5 which is really touching! (even the grief for Rand)

Egewene called Nynaeve by a nickname:

But this is the third time (!) for her to believe Nynaeve is dead and it definitely has to stop! 😡

Ok, but the ONE THING I think was kinda downgraded from season 1 to season 2 of WoT was the costuming design, like, where did all that otherworldly exquisiteness go?

The costumes this season are just not hitting for me.

Back when I'd read eleven WoT books and wasn't really planning on reading the rest because LONG and TIME CONSUMING, I had an idea for an online persona who'd be a teacher. It was a daydream and I never got around to it, but I decided to name her Lini.

Then, later, I made an OC for another fandom and decided to reuse the idea. So I have a character named Lini.

Cue deciding to re-read the Wheel of Time and then, ages later, running into Lini and going: ah. yes. her. this is why I normally don't name people after fictional characters.

BONUS: the time I was trying to name yet another OC and decided Nynaeve and Elayne were both pretty, flora-sounding names for a flora-person, but of course I couldn't just name her Nynaeve or Elayne.

So I named her "Nynaeve" but backwards. That turned out to be "Eveanin," so imagine my shock when, lo and behold, there is a character named Egeanin.

Not to mention the many, many, many names that are just Too similar to those of my main hyperfixation.

I think I liked Nynaeve from the start a lot more than most readers because I was already an adult when I read the WoT books.

So I related a lot more to the "oh no she's stuck babysitting on the field trip from hell with four idiot teens from her hometown" as opposed to the "Nynaeve is so mean waaah" we get from the other kids.

Finally watched season one of Wheel of Time. I love it. Like, they actually did right by Allana and stuff! I just, yeah, WoT written by someone not a total misogynist is actually way better than the books. I hadn’t considered that going in, but without all Robert Jordan’s absurd ideas about gender and stuff it’s like, much more enjoyable. I hadn’t realized just how one dimensional so many of the secondary women characters were until now.

For the form, Nynaeve

Gonna get run out of town on a rail for this but I never really got the Lan/Nyneave hype. Thinking about it, I like it structurally; healer who needs to shed maladaptive strategies and nurture strengths + a systemically traumatized fighter who has different leadership skills, both very embedded in their cultural context. But I never really felt compelled by their chemistry. Chalk it up to different tastes.

The show is actually doing a much better job selling me on it, but that’s also because Lan is so much less toxically masculine in the show than in the books.

she's a blueprint character for me much as ghost in the shell was very foundational to my taste. introduced me to the world of sci-fi and the amazing ways the genre can play with ideas, WHILE serving cunt

G'raha Tia (Final Fantasy XIV)

annoying prodigy historian turned spacetime-ripping wizard powered by and bound to an ancient solar power plant. i cant say more cause then we'd be here all day. im Not Normal about this character

Guts/Casca/Griffith (Berserk)

there should be dissertations written on them. griffith in particular is THEEEE character study of a villain in all of manga but i would not put him as my favorite because i want him shot into the sun and then the sun should blow up

Paul (The Locked Tomb)

this is NOT cheating to put another multiple character entry as one because Paul as a culmination of two characters arcs is important ok and i have a little room in my brain for them forever. (@keawi's art go look ok!!!)

Susannah Dean (The Dark Tower)

civil rights activist who gets isekai'd into a high fantasy post-apocalyptic horror western world, becomes a gunslinger, and proceeds to knock it out of the fucking park. she's two personalities duct-taped together. she ain't got no legs. if you look up "tough motherfucker" in the dictionary she's there

Madara (Natsume Yuujinchou)

not a complex character or anything i just like him so much. hes a kitty. he's funny. he was going to eat natsume but grew to care for him and now they're friends. he will never say this ever. he's actually a giant wolf demon. he lives as a fat cat and goes by nyanko-sensei. he's perfect

Amos Burton (The Expanse)

apparent bog-standard tough guy character actually a huge delight whenever he's on screen, ends up having an insanely compelling arc. prime poor little meow meow material of the S-tier guard dog trope variety and that wins an insane amount of points with me

Ishmael (Moby Dick)

this is not a joke he's my favorite narrator to ever do it. it's so much fun to be in his head, he's deranged and hilarious and a genuinely weird little man. king of tangents and making shit up

I feel like the show is making me ship…Nyneave and Liandrin??

Honestly, how is this a thing that is happening?

Like now I want Liandrin to attempt a redemption arc because she has to prove herself worthy of Nyneave??

But she'd be completely shit at being good. 100% selfish, 100% doing it for the wrong reasons. She totally would not understand the idea of unselfish good.

So Nyneave would reject her…(but in a hot way? Maybe after a night or two of Nyneave trying to delude herself that Liandrin could be good for real…)

And after Nyneave rejects her, she'd finally understand doing the right thing simply because it is right. She'd reject the dark, and sacrifice herself to save not Nyneave but total strangers...(women who could channel, let's say, because she wouldn't be a completely different person).

And then seeing Liandrin sacrifice herself, Nyneave would realise perhaps she was redeemable, and kiss her one last time.

(Only she wouldn't be dead and they would live happily ever after because I don't kill my gays and anyway Lan is super boring and I never got into L/N as a couple, yes I am dropping unpopular opinions here, that is my vibe).

Also I have just realised this is literally Spike's arc on buffy, except for the happily ever after part. Whoops, embarassing.

So if Moraine is actually stilled right now, and not just shielded or blocked, is it possible the show is accelerating how fast Nyneave manages to fix stilling and gentling? Rand is already having a meeting with Logain, and honestly it feels like Logain is going to be more important earlier than in the books. We also don’t necessarily need to have Taim’s half of the black tower story bc it’s not that great once it turns out Taim isn’t Demandred. I think Nyneave is going to ungentle Logain and or Moraine early this season and the other in the next season. Siuan may not even get stilled.
