Artist Research - Olga Ziemska
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Olga Ziemska is a Polish-American sculptor who works with natural materials and blends nature with humanity. An extract from her artist statement goes as follows: "Returning meaning back to nature. Making the human body a part of the whole, not the whole part.  Blending the body in. Showing how easily it can mesh, morph and disappear.  The body is nothing without that which surrounds it."
I decided to focus on Stillness In Motion, one of Ziemska’s most impressive sculptures, Ziemska uses only cut willow branches and wire to depict the silhouette of a woman, with flowing branches extending behind her. This piece piqued my interest due to the materials used and the scale of the sculpture (both factors I learned to look out for by watching the sculpture seminar last semester).
Olga's work and her connection between nature and humans is of great interest as well as concerning my project idea. Connecting nature with people and possibly looking at how nature can take over the human form over time is something I may choose to explore in my upcoming electives.
