Olive's plan for dealing with Camilla's fears was to ask Upton to let her take his horse out for her morning rides. Olive has been close to Adeline from when she was young - she has made her flower crowns from when she was six years old and even made a ribbon that was tied around her tail.

Adeline also adored Camilla. She was one of the only people who has never gotten bucked off and she would allow to hug her. The bond between a girl and her first horse is strong.

Their rides are long. Exercise for the horse and a chance to think for the girl. It was also a chance to not be around anyone. No tutors, no parents, no minders. . .

Just herself. After one of her rides, she made it back home. . . only to be surprised by a house full of people. There was a party planned for her birthday!

She cheerfully said hello to all of the guests. Her future husband was there, along with his brother the king, the queen, several people from the church, and other nobles. Volkivia was also there, although under the guise of a servant.

Elanor was one of the first to give Camilla her gift. It was new dresses, all in beautiful teals and golds, but there was also a note inside. It details how she was arranged to her husband when they were young, still teenagers themselves, and they have a beautiful relationship with four children.

How she could never imagine loving anybody more or having a better partner through the ups and downs in life. It also detailed how terrified she had been. How she had feared that he would be a horrid man behind the scenes. . . But she kept faith in the Watcher, her parents, and the king and everything worked out.

Sister Emma de Ebor gifted her with a copy of the Holy Book. Something to help guide her as she shapes into a proper lady of the court and no longer a child.

Father Walter de Stapleton gave her a holy candle to burn by her bed. To stave off disease - especially since he understood that she had health problems of her own and her mother had complicated pregnancies. The thoughtfulness almost brought a tear to her eye.

Finally, Thomas meekly approached her. She was surprised how nervous he seemed to speak to her. While they were given nobility and her father was respected. . . they weren't of royal blood. Which made their nobility lesser, at least that's what she heard from the other noble children most of her life.

"Happy birthday, my lady." He said, after taking a deep breath. . .

Inside the box was a health tonic. While that in itself was already appreciated, there was also a note rolled up beside it. When she opened it, her cheeks went red and quickly placed it back inside. It said:

"To my future wife,

I know that we are not strangers, but I also understand we are not yet friends. I am sure you have many doubts about who I am or what expectations I have of you. Let me reassure you, I have none.

We have the privilege of getting to know each other as we wait for your dowry to be ready. Although I wouldn't worry about that too much - my brother and sister-in-law are giving you 20,000 simoleans for your birthday so that should help you with the amount you need.

If it were up to me? I would marry you for free.

Love eternally, Your future husband."

After reading this, she grabbed Thomas by his arm and tugged him to the side. They spent the rest of the night chatting about almost everything. . . and he shamelessly flirted with her the whole night.

She had never considered herself particularly beautiful. . . But she still managed to catch a prince's eye.

Celebrating Jonathan Frid

Jonathan Frid (December 2, 1924 – April 14, 2012) was a Canadian actor, best known for his role as vampire Barnabas Collins on the gothic television soap opera Dark Shadows.

Frid was born of Scottish and English ancestry in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His birth name was John Herbert Frid. He was the youngest son of homemaker Isabel Flora (née McGregor) and Herbert Percival "H.P." Frid, a construction executive.

Frid served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. He graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton in 1948, and the following year was accepted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. He moved to the United States in 1954, and received a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Directing from the Yale School of Drama in 1957. As a student at Yale in 1956, he starred in the premiere of William Snyder's play A True and Special Friend. He went on to star in the first productions at the Williamstown Theater in Williamstown, Massachusetts and stage productions in Canada, England and the United States.

He began using the stage name Jonathan Frid (rather than John Frid) in 1962, and made his Broadway debut as an understudy in the 1964 play Roar Like a Dove.

Early television roles with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation included parts in Julius Caesar, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Our Town, and The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Frid is widely known for the role of vampire Barnabas Collins in the original gothic serial Dark Shadows, which ran from 1966-71 and in which he appeared in 594 episodes. He also starred as Barnabas in the 1970 movie House of Dark Shadows. In 1967, Frid had made plans to move to the U.S. West Coast to pursue a career as an acting teacher when he won the role that ultimately made him a household name. As Frid explained on his Web site, he had barely entered his apartment as the phone call from his agent came informing him that he had won the role of Barnabas Collins. He agreed to accept it after being told it was a short-term one that would provide him with extra cash while he prepared to move. As the character's popularity soared, Frid scrapped those plans.

After Dark Shadows ended in 1971, he returned to performing in live theatre full-time with starring roles in the Broadway plays Murder in the Cathedral as Thomas Becket and Wait Until Dark as Harry Roat. Frid had previously played the role of a psychiatrist on the CBS Television soap opera As the World Turns. In 1973, Frid appeared in the TV movie The Devil's Daughter, starring Shelley Winters, and the following year starred in Oliver Stone's directorial debut, Seizure. In 1978, he returned to Canada for a time and later returned to New York City in the early 1980s.

In December 1986, Frid joined the Broadway cast of Arsenic and Old Lace co-starring with Jean Stapleton, and subsequently spent over a year with the show on the road. Earlier in 1986, he formed his own production company, Clunes Associates, with producer Mary O’Leary to tour universities and performing arts centers in a series of readers' theatre entertainments, principally Fools & Fiends, Shakespearean Odyssey and Fridiculousness. "Frid makes the tales live with the wonderful instrument of his voice and his zest for entertaining" went one of his noteworthy reviews.

Frid retired to his native Canada in 1994. From time to time he would perform his one-man shows for charitable and fundraising events.  In June 2000, he returned to the professional stage in a limited engagement of the play Mass Appeal, first in Hamilton, then at the Stirling Festival Theatre in Stirling, Ontario.

In 2010, he returned to the role of Barnabas Collins for the first time in 39 years in a Dark Shadows audio drama, Night Whispers. The following year along with his former Dark Shadows co-stars David Selby, Lara Parker and Kathryn Leigh Scott, he filmed a cameo appearance for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows film, which became his final film appearance. Just a few weeks prior to the film release Frid died at the Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton on April 14, 2012 following a fall at the age of 87.

Stephen Frears's ice-cold neo-noir The Grifters works as well as it does because of the trio of top-notch leads, a tough-minded screenplay based on a tough-minded novel, unsentimental direction, and a magnificent score by Elmer Bernstein. In short, it's an easy film to admire, but a harder film to like. If it has a message to convey it's that crime may pay, but at the expense of all humanity, including love and family. The most brutal moment comes not with bloodshed, but with Lilly Dillon's (Anjelica Huston) attempt to seduce her own son, a moment that has been foreshadowed earlier when Myra Langtry (Annette Bening) voices her suspicion that Roy Dillon (John Cusack) has been sleeping with his mother. Anything goes, it seems, when you're on the grift. This was the film that made Bening a star -- after a well-reviewed but little-seen performance in Frears's Valmont a year earlier -- and earned her the first of her four Oscar nominations. Adopting a Marilyn Monroe-ish little girl voice as Myra, she makes the character a near-equal to Huston's Lilly, both of them trying to manipulate Roy to succeed in their respective grifts. But as good as Bening, Huston, and Cusack are in their roles, the film also rides smoothly on its supporting actors, especially Pat Hingle as the brutal Bobo, Henry Jones as a kind of Greek-chorus hotelier, and the always marvelous J.T. Walsh as the cunning but ultimately fragile Cole. (Walsh's early death -- he was only 54 when he succumbed to a heart attack in 1998 -- deprived us of one of our most watchable supporting actors. Like Bill Paxton, whose death at 61 recalls the premature departure of Walsh, he was one of those actors who made any film he appeared in just a little bit better.)

This question is, is it ever justified to torture an individual to save the lives of many? And if the answer is yes, how far can you go? This issue is indeed a very sensitive subject and I think it takes guts for any filmmaker to put it out there in the open like Gregor Jordan did. Add to that the clever fact that he doesn’t actually make a choice, but rather lets the audience decide on whatever they want to think and feel, and you have a pretty gutsy and controversial concept. In a nutshell, this film is about a man of American descent who has become a Muslim and has now, as an act of terrorism, planted 3 nuclear bombs in 3 major American cities which will go off in four days. Screenwriter Peter Woodward made some very tactical decisions considering the characters in the story. They are all somewhat stereotypical, but this is no bother because they’re all there for a reason. Carrie-Anne Moss, as an FBI investigator, represents the conscience, the sensitivity and the struggle to make the right decision. Samuel L. Jackson is her polar opposite; the brutal, rational, stone cold “interrogator” who does what he does because he’s the only one who can and willing to do it. The Rise Of Zach Bryan (And What It Means For Country Music)

Zach Bryan is country music’s most surprising superstar this year; forget Oliver Anthony and his subpar working class “anthem” that also shames (overweight) poor folks on welfare, Zach Bryan really is the artist that should have been blowing up for the last few years, and I’m glad he finally did. As of writing this, “I Remember Everything” from his self-titled album, featuring Kacey Musgraves, is both of their first number one single, let alone debuting at one. At the time of this writing, the song got overblown by Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red,” and I can’t be upset by that, because it’s the first time that a hip-hop song has gotten to number one in the last year, but his self-titled is still number one. I’ve certainly contributed to it, as I’ve been listening to it constantly, but in all serious, Zach Bryan’s rise to fame is such an interesting one to me, because I never thought it would happen and this is (hopefully) going to lead to something very exciting within country music.

Zach Bryan is not the type of artist that Nashville would typically be pushing, but to understand why, we need to rewind time about a decade. The era of “bro-country” started in the early 2010s, thanks to artists like Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, and the very much maligned Jason Aldean, who had a minor hit of his own earlier this year that I won’t mention, but these artists all had (and still do, at least the ones still around) the same kinds of ideas and sounds throughout their music — women, trucks, beer, and that’s it. Bro-country was not known for its intelligence, and country was the butt of jokes for many years afterwards. Hell, it wasn’t “cool” to like the genre, and every time you spoke about it, you almost had to “defend” yourself. A few outliers came up around the same time, bucking cliches and conventions, such as Kacey Musgraves and Chris Stapleton, but they were hard to find.

At the same time, there was a bubbling underground movement that was found in certain states and scenes, such as Kentucky and Texas, and people started to take note that country music was doing some interesting things away from the norm. History tends to repeat itself, as the 1970s saw a very similar thing happen when “outlaw country” was becoming popular, and Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash were defying country norms at the time by releasing gritty and raw albums, but the same thing is happening today. It might not be in the same sense, even though a few modern outlaw artists have gotten popular in the underground, but a lot of underground artists are finally getting their time in the spotlight. Just a few years ago, Zach Bryan and Tyler Childers were just underground artists that the mainstream didn’t know or care about, but now they’re huge.

Pop-country is still very much a thing, but it’s not as pop-leaning as it was just five years ago. It seems like both Nashville as a whole and the mainstream is embracing more traditional sounds and styles again, and Zach Bryan’s new album means that people are on board for a sparse, raw, and folk-infused country album that is very poetic and somber in tone. Maybe we’ll get more artists in this vein, whether it’s in the country scene or the mainstream. Country has had a great year, especially for the mainstream, and maybe it’ll continue, but even if it doesn’t, the country scene is alive and well, so I’m excited to see and hear what comes out next.
