Turn Week Day 5: Dinner Party (1/2)

Which Turn characters would be invited to my dinner party?

This is a two parter bc of the 10 image limit. Second part won't be as long. :)

To be honest, there is more characters I like than dislike. So, I'll just go down the list of characters and talk about why or why not I would have them at my dinner party. I'll even throw in a maybe category.

I'd probably invite a lot more characters than I would not invite

(Hopefully it's nothing like the Thanksgiving dinner at Samuel Townsends.. )

First, who would I not invite?

I)

Sorry, Simcoe. Unfortunately you didn't make the cut. Not a big fan of having a guest stabbed at dinner.

II)

Robert Rogers is an instant no. Love the character, but do not want him at my table. He'd probably just start arguing with André (spoiler alert André makes the dinner list) also, he pulled a gun out and threatened everyone at the Townsend Thanksgiving.. so no thanks!

III)

Another easy one. Benedict, stay far away from my house. Your wife can come though. Don't need his anger issues ruining my vibe.

Richard was never considered!! Shitty father and was awful towards Anna. Maybe he needs some family therapy with Abe rather than a dinner. Honestly he probably wouldn't believe in therapy. Or mental health.

Who would I MAYBE invite?

I)

Philomena is a maybe. Might be awkward with Peggy there.. and André who kept trying to make her look like Peggy. Might spare her all of that drama. She probably wouldn't even go.

II)

Abe is a definite maybe. He's always caught up in some shite. Maybe he'd be ok because Simcoe, Abe's dad, and Rogers aren't invited. He'd probably steal some food to give to Rogers in his cellar.

Now who would I invite?

Major Hewlett obviously. My tumblr user gives it away but he is obviously my favorite character. He won't have to deal with Simcoe. Good for him. He deserves better.

II)

To me, André is turns sexy man. (Sorry, Ben fans) and he is my second favorite male character. I don't care that he died. He is not dead for my party. He can be with Peggy :,).

III)

Peggy Shippen is a girlboss. She is the moment. She is invited. I love her. She can sit next to André if she wants.

The suggestion of the two names brings an instant, almost visceral reaction from the Constable. “Oh, Mena any day of the week!” he quickly confirms. “Miss Shippen’s fine looking, sure, but she’s a spoiled brat!” Unable to resist a slight urge to gossip, he leans forward in his seat. “And Mena at least is honest about who she is, and how she makes her coin. Miss Shippen, she acts all high and mighty in her big house and rolling around in her carriage… but do you know how many Watchmen have seen her being escorted around the city well past decent hours?” he snorts. “Major Andre and General Arnold? They’re hardly special exceptions for Philadelphia’s little Miss Shippen.” It is no secret that Troy has little use for the wealthy in general, and even less use for the wealthy and hypocritical. Peggy is always trying to play the demure damsel card, or the injured innocent, but the staff who work in the Shippen household? They have their own side of the story, and when it comes to gleaning information, Troy is far more likely to listen to the servants and the slaves. They do not have public images to uphold, and generally have no qualms about speaking frankly to someone who shares their disdain of the so-called better members of society. “Honestly, it’s amazing,” he comments after a minute. “The whole world’s down on Mena for being what she is, just because she makes money off it. But Miss Shippen, she does the exact same thing for free, and we’re all supposed to fall at her feet!” A bit of a wry smirk turns Troy’s lips upward, “At least with Mena, getting her attention for free actually means something—it means you’re worth her while. But you cannot even tell that much with Miss Shippen. So, really, I don’t think Miss Shippen should get to lord so much over Mena—she’s not so high and mighty in comparison even if she thinks she is.”

Norton doesn’t have the money to buy or get you anything fancy. It hurts his heart a little because he would love to splurge a bit on you, but also being stuck in a dangerous manor game doesn’t help either of your situations. (Especially when you are low on clues to get food…)

Norton’s love language is Physical Touch. This man is (already) all over you from the beginning to the end of your relationship. He just loves the way you feel in his arms and it makes him feel a tone better.

You should also make sure to reciprocate these actions. Norton will probably feel even more loved by you knowing that you want to touch him as well.

The Journalist

Alice most likely has her time slots filled with random things she has to get done, so as her partner, she would like you to understand and accept the fact that she can’t spend a lot of time around or with you. What she can do, are Acts of Service.

What she lacks in time management she makes up for in getting things done for you. Too tired to grab your laundry? She’s on it. Need a snack but you're too lazy to go and get it? She’ll be right back babe. And as a last resort, she would take your place in a match for you. ONLY if something bad has come up and the two of you have discussed every possible route you can take. Lily can be easily described as a bundle of energy just waiting to be released. She’s a great company and fills any void of loneliness in your bones. She is bright, funny, and overall an amazing person.

Lily has been cheering on others her entire life. Encouraging her brother as she watched him climb the ranks is a fond memory of hers and is cherished deeply. For these and many other reasons, Lily’s love language is Words of Affirmation.

To think that Lily’s enthusiasm would lack or stop when it came to you is just silly. If anything, it grows even stronger. Fiona is a self-proclaimed devotee to her god, but nowadays, she finds her devotion slipping. Her faith, disintegrating into ashes the longer she’s stuck in here. It’s given her a lot of time to think, but it’s also given her more time to spend with you. To forget about the unknown wonders of the world and just embrace your presence in its entirety.

Fiona Gilman’s love language is undoubtedly Quality Time. She enjoys nothing more than to spend time with you outside the games. She doesn’t mind what or who it’s with, just that you're there. She also seems like she’s a sucker for picnics. Just the two of you is best, but if you insist on having others then that’s fine as well.

The Priestess has spent most of her days devoting herself to her religion and belief, which you don’t shame her for. She knows that her beliefs may not align with others, but she appreciates that you don’t give her crap about it. Mary was born with wealth and nobility to her name, she knows the power money has over people and the influence it can make. So she more than understands the currency of this strange manor. Not that she’s complaining though, she has more than enough clues and fragments to last a lifetime.

Mary Kriegburg's love language is Gifting. She has the clues too, so why not splurge on a new outfit for her daring? It’s the best way for her to show you that no amount of money can compare to the love that floods her unbeating heart.

If you do end up gifting something back to her, handmade or bought, she will cherish it. It may seem that Mary doesn’t like the handmade doll you made of her, but she sleeps with it during the nights you can’t accompany her. Her bed does feel cooler without you.

The Photographer

Joseph Desaulniers's love language has to do with Quality Time. He spends his time wisely so that he can save more for when both of you are available. The Photographer enjoys afternoon tea parties with you. Talk about anything or keep your mouth shut, he won't mind either. Your presence warms his dead body and it's such a welcoming feeling for the man that he yearns for it.

Joseph has already lost his brother in an already tragic manner, the Photographer keeps you close to ensure you don't meet an unexpected demise while he's not there. No, he doesn't want you to go back to your dorm room yet. Just stay by him for a moment longer and let him know you're not going anywhere one last time.

Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos 1819-1867 Feast Day: October 5 Patronage: against cancer

Blessed Fr. Francis Xavier Seelos was beatified by Pope Saint John Paul II in 2000. Born in Germany, he was inspired to be a Redemptorist missionary priest in the U.S. to serve the German immigrants. At St. Philomena’s Parish in Pittsburgh, he was the assistant to St. John Neumann, who was his spiritual director and encouraged him to preach missions. Fr. Seelos lived a simple lifestyle, serving the poor and abandoned. He was called the “Cheerful Ascetic,” the “American Wonderworker,” the “Doctor of Souls,” for his intercession in healing bodies and souls. He was assigned to parishes in Detroit, Baltimore, and New Orleans, where he died from yellow fever contracted from caring for victims of the disease.

Turn Week Day 4: History Nerdery

I'm a bit late to this year's Turn Week, but here are my thoughts on today's prompt:

Funnily for me, my interest in this particular historical context started with the series, and, coming from a related background, I quickly started to develop quite an interest in the events that were dramatised in the series.

My favourite pet peeve and Turn-related thing to nerd on about is doubtlessly the misrepresentation of John Graves Simcoe (feel free to ask me anything, I'm down to the level where I know the name of some of his pets, his schoolboy misdeeds, and his hobbies...) as a central villain; however, the more you read, the more I picked up on some of the other, non-Simcoe-related details, too:

The Hessians aren't very convincing, given they don't even speak German properly.

Sally being made into the name of an imaginary pet dog, rather than the sister of Robert Townsend (the one who historically may or may not have been in love with John Graves Simcoe), annoyed me to no end.

In general, the entire Townsend family dynamic was a lot more interesting than the narrative that Robert was effectively a reclusive loner with an overbearing father.

The 'romance' between Colonel Cooke and Philomena Cheer is half based on the alleged affair between General Howe and Elizabeth Loring, and half on General Clinton's, very happy, it has to be said, relationship with Mary Baddeley, whom he did indeed bring back to England, and who remained his partner until his death.

Speaking of Cooke, I'm pretty sure his character was modelled on the way Britsh officers (excluding Sir John Copeland, maybe) were represented in the 1925 Broadway musical Dearest Enemy.

John André's terrible braid is based on a case of mistaken identity; indeed, a similar braid appears in a portrait of a British officer labelled as John André, yet, as the British flag in the background suggests, this portrait was created post-1801. Furthermore, the regimentals do not match 'the' John André's service record.
