A patient said something she thought was in confidence and he (the doctor) shared it with staff? And now TRAs are harassing a woman fighting breast cancer? That doctor needs to lose his license for violating patient confidentiality
A woman in Oregon receiving treatment for breast cancer has been dropped by her health clinic of 12 years because she expressed views critical of gender ideology.
Marlene Barbera, who is scheduled for a mastectomy later this month, told Reduxx that she had commented on the presence of a transgender pride flag that was hanging in the waiting room of the Richmond Family Medical Clinic in Portland last year.
Barbera explained that she had written a message to her doctor on MyChart, a website where patients can access their personal health information, describing that she found the inclusion of “political messaging in a healthcare setting” as “offensive.”
She, like a growing number of women, has “gender critical” views, rejecting modern ideologies that conflate biological sex and “gender identity.” Barbera mentioned she had faced rape and death threats from trans activists on X (formerly Twitter), many of whom would have identified with that same flag.
Initially, the Doctor, who she revealed had been her primary care provider for over ten years, said that he would not take the flag down. But while Barbera had initially believed their correspondence to be private, she later discovered that the note to her physician had been viewed and shared by other staff at the clinic.
This June, while attempting to leave a message for her doctor regarding blood test results, the issue continued to escalate. A receptionist at the clinic, who Barbera speculated was transgender, did not permit her to be patched through to her doctor.
Tumblr media
“The person insisted I make an appointment. I have breast cancer and consequently an abundance of medical appointments so I did not want to do that. They got frustrated with my ‘non-compliance’ and hung up on me,” Barbera told Reduxx.
“Thinking it might have been in error, I called back. I was told I was ‘not allowed’ and that I must speak to the previous person who had hung up on me. I declined as things hadn’t gone well the first time.”
She then questioned whether the refusal from the first receptionist was due to her previous complaint about the trans pride flag in the lobby.
“I asked, guessing ‘did I hurt the trans person’s feelings?’ And the receptionist took offense to the question, asking ‘what did you say‘ slowly and with great emphasis.”
Weeks later, Barbera received an email from Oregon Health Science University’s (OHSU) Stein Berger, informing her that she had been “discharged from receiving medical care at the Richmond Family Medicine Clinic,” effective immediately, with services to be cut off from all OHSU Family Medicine Clinics, including immediate care clinics, from July 29th. The email did in fact specify that she was being removed “because of ongoing disrespectful and hurtful remarks about our LGBTQ community and staff.”
Barbera told Reduxx that the incident had sent her “anxiety through the roof” and that she was struggling with her mental health as a result of the stress.
“I have severe chronic agitated depression since teen years,” Barbera explains. “Now I have no primary care doctor and nowhere else to go. I have been made to feel like a worthless nothing.”
This is not the first time a woman has lost access to critical medical services due to her “gender critical” views.
In October of last year, a woman identified as Emma by the UK’s Daily Mail was banned from having an operation in London’s Princess Grace Hospital because she requested single sex accommodation. The woman, who had been scheduled for a complex colorectal operation, also expressed that she did not want to “use pronouns or engage with such manifestations of gender ideology.”
Despite having experience being the victim of sexual assault, Emma was banned from having her procedure at the facility for requesting single-sex care.

do you have any tips for making it through trans healthcare in the uk because its all pretty confusing atm and you seem like youd know
So because I’m a good girl I waited years for the gender identity clinic and sat through another year of time-wasting appointments and never self-medded or anything like that, and my conclusion from this experience is:
Fuck the NHS, they will be less than no help. Get a GIC referral now, like today, whatever doubts or feelings you have about it. Then work out how you feel. Do everything yourself, even if you have to eat the cost of stuff like private blood tests for hormone levels, then in five or ten years’ time when the GIC actually see you, present them with a fait accompli because you don’t actually need them for much besides a surgery referral if you want that

The uk is so fucking terrible with trans minors like okay the only private gender clinic you can go to for even a diagnosis of gd is gender gp. They only offer hrt because you can’t get private surgery as a minor. Okay, whatever, fine. But nobody accepts a diagnosis from ggp when you’re an adult, so you have to get rediagnosed at another clinic to be able to get surgery. Also shared care for hrt and your gp is super hard to get with ggp so I guess your blood tests are super fucked
Okay, so what about the nhs? In 2019 or something one clinic only saw two people the entire year and had an estimated wait time of one thousand years. People who were put on the waiting lists in 2018 are only getting referred for first appointments now. A second appointment can literally take another year. And when you turn eighteen and become an adult you’re very likely to be sent all the way back to the end of the waiting list for adults instead of getting to jump ahead. So congratulations, you just waited years for nothing
Also unrelated to medical care but Kier Starmer, who’s literally the head of labour, which is supposed to be the more liberal party, has talked about how he thinks schools should out trans kids to their parents if they’re closeted at home. Like, genius, maybe the reason they’re out at school and not at home is because it’s not fucking safe to be out at home, how can you not get this, fuck you

Woa how did u get prescribed t in the UK?
I went private!! I've been on the NHS waiting list for like. four years and they recently told me I'm looking at at least another two years wait (and I'm planning on moving to the US within the next few years so that's not ideal) and I got sick or waiting!! so I looked into private options near me.
I'm in the vague London area so I went with the Gender Hormone Clinic (they work closely with the London Transgender Clinic who cover the surgery side of things). I had to get a dysphoria diagnosis from elsewhere first which cost me about £500 from the Harley Street Gender Clinic, although I know there's other people who the GHC will accept one from. If you want a timeline breakdown, my HSGC appointment was back in January (I requested it in November i think) and then I sent off all my shit to the GHC, I had to get some blood tests done for the GHC back in Feb (through my normal GP), I had a medical history appointment with the GHC in April, and if my irl medical check on Friday all goes well (which it should!!) they'll prescribe me gel testosterone same day - apparently they start everyone on gel bc it's easier. My first appointment with the GHC cost £200, and it's a £49 subscription per month which covers all my check ups, paperwork, prescriptions (although I'll still have to pay normal £9 prescription price too), etc.
This is just the route I went down, but for me personally the money is worth how quickly its taken compared to the nhs? I know a guy who went private via GenderGP which I think is a little more streamlined, he got on T within like 3 months, but I've heard they can be a little sketchy sometimes and their website confused me too much shdhd. Anyway yeah the main hurdle is just getting that diagnosis and then it's pretty plain sailing as long as you have money (my first appointments were funded by my grandparent which helped a lot too)

(disco elysium anon, wanted to send this separately) (and i'm sorry if this is invasive/whatever, also no pressure to respond to this at all! but if you want to talk more/ask questions then let me know however you'd like, i'm happy to send you a proper message and whatever you need)
anyway my point is: you mentioned a gender clinic referral in a tag and i'm a trans man also in the uk with a lot of experience in that area so i thought this might help in some way 👌🏼
if you've gone through the nhs, the wait times are astronomical (the shortest one is about 15 months, the longest around 62 months). the current legal limit on nhs referrals is a matter of weeks so it's literally criminal but that's another story lmao
if you go on the 'transgenderuk' subreddit there's a pinned post with current wait times and there's a wealth of information and people happy to help with anything from name changes to 3 stage surgery. also the nhs are notorious for just. not referring people to their gender clinics so if you did go through them it may make sense to give them a ring and check they did their job!
if you went through a private gender clinic and haven't heard back in months, 1000% follow up. the longest reply time i've heard is a month or two and the longest appointment wait i've seen is 7 months
lastly: there is another route. it's a lot more popular for transfems to do it, given feminising hormones are legal here but masculinising ones aren't, but transmascs (myself included) can 'diy' hormones, if hormones are the transition route you're after. even after i checked with like... tons and tons of people and different resources i was still terrified but it does work! also i get if a stranger on tumblr dot com doesn't reassure you, but i wanted to let you know about the option because it honestly saved my life and i think more transmascs need to know about this as a route especially those in this hell country lolol
for more info i would recommend the diy hrt wiki, just google that term and it should come up. i should mention though, with this though you're probably going to have to inject yourself which i know isn't for everyone (i used to need to have someone on facetime with me for like 45 minutes hyping me up lol). there is gel available on some sites but it's super expensive. also some sites will have tablets for sale but they don't work to masculinise unfortunately. OH and it's also recommended that you do blood tests semi regularly (once or twice a year) to test sex hormones and some other things like your liver, which you'll probably have to pay for yourself if you diy - in saying this though, the cost of 6 private blood tests, and 3 years worth of T and injection equipment would cost about the same as the initial appointments you need with the more reliable of the 2 private gender clinics. something something seize the means of transition
anyway. this is an absolutely insanely long message and i'm so so sorry if this is too much and too like... invasive but whats the point of having trans resources if you dont share them and whats the point of having a trans community if you dont trans commune 😎🏳️‍⚧️
WHATTTT THSI IS CRAZY THANK U. LOVE YOU. i definitelyyyyy need to look into it all more and start DOING SHITTT bc yeah this stupid fuck country SUCKKKKS. i did go thru nhs and cant afford to do private rn but ill tryyy to chase it :] THANK UUUU this is so so sweet i cld cryyyy 😭😭😭

Just listened to the new episode of Tortoise’s Slow Newscast about Gender GP and it’s sooooo bad. Maybe I should have known better than to bother with it, but I’ve enjoyed their non-gender related stuff. I also know at least one person who uses Gender GP, and I separately have been hearing from an FTM support group I’m in that a lot of NHS trusts are no longer willing to do shared care with Gender GP while still doing it with other similar services. I had hoped maybe it would shed some light on why that might be, because even though trans healthcare is vital it’s still important that it be done ethically and held to the same standards as other healthcare. But no, instead it was basically a referendum on whether medical transition is good/bad. Again. Fucks sake.
(For non-UK people, Gender GP are a private service for transition related healthcare but they can, or have in the past, worked with the NHS to provide shared care e.g. blood tests for HRT monitoring. It is needed because it’s a very, very, very long drawn out and difficult process to access NHS transition care.) The podcast’s thesis was that the founder of Gender GP (a cis GP named Helen Webberley) is not practicing ethical healthcare because there isn’t enough assessment before providing HRT. They do treat children but the majority of their customers are adults. However you can guess which demographic was focused on. No children or adults who had undergone treatment with Gender GP were interviewed. There was a suggestion from the interviewer that maybe Helen Webberley is y’know a little bit ditzy, naive as hell of course, but also isn’t she bad for making money out of this? In this way she is juxtaposed against the NHS, which is the Good and Right way to transition, because they don’t profit off trans kids I guess. This argument stops working in any country that doesn’t have free at point of use healthcare of any kind, but never mind that. Also the podcast to its credit acknowledges several times that there are no currently practicing NHS gender clinics in the UK, and that this is a problem. But that’s about all we get in that department. There’s a waiting list, but no clinics. That list gets longer and longer. It’s so fucked up.
I would argue that the podcast is sceptical about the entire concept of being transgender, and I wonder if they even realise this about themselves. Two mothers of trans sons are interviewed, one who used Gender GP and one who accessed black market hormones. The first mother says that Gender GP ruined her child. But she was still referring to her child as her daughter and using she/her. You would think that if medical transition was the only concern, the mother would have been fine with the social and 100% reversable changes in pronouns and name. I know it’s hard for someone who has known you their whole life as one name and set of pronouns to remember at first, but this was different, she just hadn’t done anything. Without saying it out loud she was clearly waiting for it all to blow over, and not even considering that it might not. Meanwhile the child’s father (they were divorced) is helping the child access Gender GP, which can’t have helped matters. The mother sadly laments how Gender GP tore her family apart. The 2nd mother was worried about her child accessing black market hormones and using home syringes. This is a valid worry. However she also referred to her child purely as daughter, she/her and actively aschewed his new name. I don’t even know why she was interviewed as her son wasn’t using Gender GP, and this wasn’t a perspective about what Gender GP was clearly designed to be- a safer option in between black market hormones and the endless wait for the NHS. It was very clear she was even more ‘wait for it to blow over’ than the first interviewee. She spoke with apparent disgust (though to be fair was voiced by an actor who may have been hamming it up a bit) that since socially transitioning at school her child was suddenly really popular and was liked by many people he wasn’t before, and they all loved using his new name....that part felt especially weird, like she was angry that her child was being called a name he preferred by his friends. It’s not the first time I’ve heard of parents alluding to children coming out as trans at school to become popular. I read an article where a parent was relaying what their child had said, where apparently their classmate came out as trans in assembly and everybody clapped. The idea that there might be other factors involved, such as novelty that will wear off for the classmates, the classroom social standing of the child in question, or even in the case of the 2nd podcast interviewee’s son, increased confidence post coming out making him more sociable, was ignored. I do understand that this is a relatively new area of medicine without much long term data to draw on. However all types of healthcare has to start somewhere, and I wouldn’t have thought that the fear of an army of angry and betrayed detransitioners one day (which the interviewer was clearly disappointed that Webberley had never seen) should hold back progress. There are older adults who transitioned as children out in the world. On tumblr almost a decade ago I remember young trans guys in parts of the US accessing hormones through informed consent clinics, to much hand wringing from certain reactionary internet circles-see if you can contact those people. How are they doing?
There is so much more I could talk about but I have to stop there or I’ll go on all night. Edited to add: this should not be interpreted as a defence of Helen Webberley, only as a condemnation of the podcast episode’s framing of the concept of gender services that don’t require stringent assessment as very dangerous and scary and automatically malpractice. There’s a reason why I listened in the first place- because I had heard not great things about Gender GP. Sadly I didn’t get a look at its problems and its founder’s problems, I got yet another highly biased condemnation of the entire concept of transness with way too much airtime for parents who don’t believe their teenage children have their own internal selves.
Edit again: I understand now what the podcast was saying about clinics- there are currently no gender clinics in England that treat children. There are a few in the country that treat adults over 18, and the waiting lists are really long but at least you can refer to one in any region. My referral was for Nottingham even though I’m in the south as it currently has the shortest waiting list on the tracker.

Market Dynamics
As the burden of various diseases increases globally, so has the number of laboratory tests. The number of laboratories in both the public and private sectors has increased in response to this need. With the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in December 2019, the demand for diagnostic tests has skyrocketed. Many government organizations have established new laboratories in response to this epidemic and to increase laboratory testing capacity. The majority of nations need clinical laboratories to get regulatory body accreditation before performing diagnostic tests. Additionally, accreditation to ISO 15189:2012 and other comparable standards is turning into a requirement in many nations. Authorities assess a laboratory’s competency and quality system during the accreditation process using predetermined standards. While some European nations, including Belgium, France, Hungary, Ireland, and Lithuania, require accreditation for a variety of laboratory tests, others, like Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK, have practically finished the process.
It costs a lot of money to set up a QC process in a clinical laboratory. Additionally, laboratories must keep a specialized staff on hand to oversee the QC system. Moreover, regardless of the number of tests conducted, QC procedures are expensive. As a result, QC methods are particularly expensive to adopt for clinical laboratories that perform few diagnostic tests. This is predicted to lead to a lesser adoption of QC procedures, along with budgetary restrictions in many hospitals and laboratories in developed and emerging nations.

What are the different types of Ultrasound Scans?
Ultrasound is a sort of soundwave that is beneath the human scope of the hearing. The tools in Private Ultrasound Scan Clinic in the UK can utilize these soundwaves to make point-by-point photos of your inner parts. The ultrasound test conveys the sound waves, which will then, at that point, be quickly returned by various types of tissue inside your body. The test will gather the ultrasound repeats and transform them into clear photos of your organs that will move continuously. For more information visit the Private Pathology Laboratory in the UK.
Tumblr media
1.   Pregnancy Scans
Pregnancy scans are the most notable sort of ultrasound. We can utilize ultrasound to beware of a child's development and improvement during pregnancy. It is feasible to evaluate for explicit circumstances like Down's disorder and to check for many various irregularities. It can also ensure that the doctors of the Private Pathology Laboratory in the UK are ready to give any extra treatment that might be expected upon entering the world.
Tumblr media
2.   Diagnostic Ultrasound Scans

• Thyroid scan: An ultrasound of the thyroid organ in your neck, normally to analyze developments.
• Transvaginal scan: An inner ultrasound to look at the ovaries and uterus.
• Testicular scan: Ultrasound to check for issues, for example, testicular twists or developments including malignant growth.
Tumblr media
3.   Vascular and Doppler Scans
Ultrasound scans don't simply show us what's going on with your organs. These scans have the specialty of checking veins and many more and getting to know about the supplements needed. Issues with the progression of blood through these vessels can have serious outcomes. We can check for blockages, for example, blood clumps that could cause issues like profound vein apoplexy.
The Private Pathology Laboratory in the UK empowers us to quantify the development of blood through your courses. The scan is typically performed on the carotid vein that provisions the mind. What You Need To Know About Coronary Angiography
What is Coronary Angiography?
Coronary Angiography is a diagnostic test that uses X-ray technology and a contrast dye to create detailed images of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle. The test helps doctors to diagnose and evaluate the severity of narrowed or blocked coronary arteries, which can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, and other symptoms of heart disease. The procedure is performed by threading a thin, flexible tube called a catheter through an artery, typically in the leg or arm, and up to the heart. The contrast dye is then injected through the catheter, and X-ray images are taken to visualize the blood flow in the coronary arteries. Coronary angiography can also be used to guide treatment procedures, such as angioplasty or stenting, to open blocked or narrowed coronary arterie.
Coronary angiography is typically an outpatient procedure that takes about 10 minutes to 15 minutes to complete. However, the total time spent at the hospital may be longer, as there is usually some preparation time and recovery time afterwards. The preparation time may include obtaining informed consent, an IV line insertion, and some blood work, and this can take 30 minutes to an hour. After the procedure, the patient will be monitored for about 4 hours in the recovery room or in the cardiac catheterization lab. So, the total time spent at the hospital can be around 6-8 hours. It is important to note that the time may vary depending on the individual case and the facility where the procedure is being performed.
What are the risks involved in doing coronary angiography?
Allergic reaction to the contrast dye used in the procedure
Bruising or bleeding at the puncture site
Blood clots in leg or wrist artery
Heart attack or stroke
Damage to the blood vessels or heart
Kidney damage
However, these risks are generally considered to be low, and the procedure is considered to be safe when performed by an experienced operator. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure with your doctor to determine whether it is appropriate for you.
What is the cost of coronary angiography in India?
The cost of a coronary angiography procedure in India can vary depending on a number of factors such as the location, the hospital, and the type of procedure used. On average, the cost of a coronary angiography procedure in India can range from around 20,000 to 50,000 Indian Rupees. However, in some private hospitals, the cost could be higher. It is important to note that this cost may also vary depending on whether you have health insurance or not, and what type of coverage you have. It is always recommended that you check with your insurance company to see what your policy covers, and to get an estimate of the out-of-pocket costs you will be responsible for.

All-Inclusive Guide To ADHD Private Diagnosis Cost
How to Cut the Cost of an ADHD Private Diagnosis
Tumblr media
On the internet, a growing variety of private ADHD assessment services are providing a quick and accurate diagnosis for a minimal cost. However, they come with some significant risks such as the possibility of a misdiagnosis. It is essential to remember that any healthcare professional who conducts an assessment should be a specialist in the area of ADHD. This includes GP's and consultants psychiatrists. Costs The cost of medication for adhd can be prohibitive. However, there are ways to lower the cost of treatment. For private adhd assessment , some patients can receive prescriptions through their GP or private health insurance company. Others can benefit from free ADHD evaluations offered by certain private companies. These free or low-cost evaluations can save families a lot of money over the long term. A reputable private provider of ADHD assessments will take your financial needs into consideration. They can also offer various payment plans to suit your budget. You can choose from various options, such as deposits and five payments or a single payment in front. These services are not intended to replace regular healthcare. It is recommended to consult your doctor or an ADHD specialist. The cost of treating ADHD can be extremely high, even for people who have health insurance coverage. In addition, the disorder can lead to co-existing disorders which can result in other costs, including alcohol misuse anxiety, mood, and sleep disorders, as well as a higher risk of accidents. These issues could result in the cost to society of $122.8 billion annually, according to a study released in 2022 that looked at health insurance claims as well as academic and medical research. In the US, adults with untreated ADHD can cost the country more than $13,000 annually. These costs are primarily related to indirect health services that include lost income and productivity. Other indirect costs include social security benefits, supplemental disability insurance, and other types of welfare. The National Health Service of the UK government has a policy called Right to Choice, which allows individuals to receive NHS-funded ADHD treatment and assessments outside of their locality. These tests are typically conducted by a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist who has been trained to diagnose ADHD. They will conduct a thorough test and may also recommend other treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or counseling. They will also provide an account in writing to the GP and may prescribe medication. Waiting at various times It is time-consuming and costly to diagnose ADHD particularly in adults. A visit to a specialist may be accompanied by additional testing like an IQ or blood test. If you're not insured or a health insurance plan, you may need to shell out thousands of dollars to receive an assessment. There are ways to cut down on the cost of an ADHD assessment and treatment. The wait time for an in-person ADHD evaluation can be long. Many have discovered that they have to wait years for a GP referral, which can be difficult when suffering from symptoms of ADHD. There are a few NHS-approved services that offer shorter waiting times. These services are accessible via the online GP referral system, or by using Right To Choose. The service providers listed on this list are all assessed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). For adults, the most effective medication for ADHD is methylphenidate or amphetamine salts which have been proven scientifically to improve symptoms. These medications work by blocking the reuptake certain neurotransmitters within the brain. This reduces hyperactivity and inattention. The drugs can cause negative side effects like sleepiness and a loss of appetite. Some people experience difficulty adjusting to the medications, while others find that they don't work. When evaluating a patient for ADHD the professional must take into account their personal history as well as how they're performing in the workplace, at home, and in relationships. This information is collected in an ADHD diagnosis that is used by professionals to determine if a patient is meeting the ADHD criteria. The GP may refer the patient to an ADHD specialist for an evaluation and possibly a prescription. The NHS has been criticized for its slow provision of ADHD treatment, especially after an BBC Panorama report revealed that certain private clinics were overdiagnosing the condition. The investigation was criticised for not considering a bigger issue of the poor availability of ADHD services in the public health system. The report did emphasize that ADHD is a real condition that affects a lot of adults. Medication Many patients who undergo private adhd diagnosis in Scotland do so to receive treatment. They realize that their untreated ADHD is having a detrimental impact on their education, work relationships, and financial situation. They may even receive treatment for anxiety, depression and other disorders that could be more effectively managed if their ADHD was properly diagnosed and treated. In addition to taking medication, a therapist is also able to provide behavioural therapy as well as other kinds of assistance. This can be extremely helpful in dealing with the symptoms of ADHD and helping the patient learn how to manage the condition. The cost of a private therapy can be prohibitive for certain families, particularly those with no health insurance. A GP may diagnose ADHD in a few patients, but they are unlikely to prescribe medication for the condition. GPs do not have the knowledge or the training required to identify ADHD or prescribe medication. Additionally, they aren't required to sign a shared-care agreement with the NHS for medications that are prescribed privately. Neuropsychologists and psychiatrists are the best professionals to perform ADHD assessments. A GP may diagnose ADHD but they are not able to provide the thorough assessment required to develop an effective treatment plan. In certain instances the GP might refer the patient to an expert for a diagnosis and a treatment plan. The majority of health insurance plans don't cover the cost of ADHD evaluations or treatment. Some organizations have specific guidelines for what they will cover, but others simply refuse to cover a lengthy and complicated assessment process. In fact, a recent study conducted by ADDitude magazine found that more than 16 percent of its participants reported that the costs of managing their ADHD exceed 10 percent of their annual income. If you are unable to pay for the entire cost of an ADHD assessment should ask their GP to recommend them or consult an expert on their own. They can assist with assistance with finances or payment plans. In some cases, they can arrange for an assessment to be completed in installments to aid in meeting their budgetary requirements. Counseling can also help you deal with the challenges of ADHD. A reliable counselor will be able to provide you with guidance and help that could make a significant impact on your life. Some have even taken on another job to pay for the treatment. Some adults have been able to access services that are free or discounted by their employers or local mental health clinics. While some people have success in finding psychiatrists who accept public health insurance, these providers are not easy to locate. They are typically busy and have a limited number of openings which makes it difficult to schedule an appointment. Tests and interviews are an integral part of the thorough assessment that psychiatrists who treat ADHD conduct. They typically ask about family history, past experiences, history, and current problems. They might also perform additional tests to determine if a person has a comorbid condition like depression or anxiety. These tests may include IQ tests and memory tests. They may also include inkblots and mental health assessments. They may also perform tests for blood and physical examination, based on the individual. A private psychiatrist can provide a more thorough and faster diagnosis than the NHS. Private psychiatrists are skilled in diagnosing adults suffering from ADHD and can offer a range of therapies. It is important to understand that a private diagnosis does not mean that you automatically get ADHD medication. To receive this medication, you will need an agreement for shared-care from your GP. A new service dubbed Klarity is designed to give adults with ADHD a more affordable option. It costs $149 to have an initial consultation and 59$ for follow-up appointments. The company also offers a monthly program that includes medication and therapy. The monthly charges range from $299 to $595 which is a little higher than the typical cost of private treatment for ADHD.

Diabetics face critical medicine shortages as their drugs are snapped up for weight loss treatment
Many of Britain’s 4.3 million registered diabetics face a critical medication shortage as their treatments are snapped up by dieters trying the latest trend – weight loss jabs. A leading testing expert says the UK’s diabetes epidemic means that key drugs should be saved for patients who critically depend on them. Wonder weight loss treatment drugs ‘Wonder’ weight loss drugs, such as Wegovy, have hit the headlines in recent weeks. They can help people shed 10%-15% of their bodyweight, largely by supressing their appetite. However, some of these weight loss jabs are based on semaglutide, first developed for treating type 2 diabetes. This means the boom in demand for ‘magic bullet’ weight loss jabs is contributing to a major shortage in key diabetes medication, says a leading expert. Leading blood testing expert, Dr Avinash Hari Narayanan (MBChB), Clinical Lead at London Medical Laboratory, says: ‘There is now a global shortage of semaglutide-based drugs for treating diabetes. Key among these is Wegovy’s sister drug, Ozempic, used by the NHS as a treatment for managing blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 90% of all diabetes cases in the UK. This will result in both acute and chronic medical complications if left unmanaged. ‘Both Wegovy and Ozempic are produced by the Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk. The problem is that Ozempic has increasingly been prescribed off label (outside of its approved licence) for weight loss as an alternative to Wegovy. Now Novo Nordisk is warning of shortages of Ozempic stretching into 2025. ‘Ozempic and Wegovy became a social media phenomenon earlier this year as a weight loss cure, with demand for semaglutide spiralling after celebrity endorsements. That’s not what Ozempic was intended for and has resulted in demand far outstripping supply. Now Novo Nordisk’s official weight loss drug, Wegovy, is finally available in the UK on the NHS and as a private prescription. However, though this will relieve the demand on critical Ozempic stocks, supplies of all semaglutide-based treatments remain limited. Patients being treated for type 2 diabetes need to know that there are sufficient stocks of this treatment and, if not, patients need a plan to mitigate against supply disruptions. ‘Novo Nordisk now has a market cap of $419.79bn, making it the world's 17th most valuable company.  Astonishingly, the market value of the Danish company has exceeded the size of Denmark’s domestic economy (£395.40bn). We are keen for Novo Nordisk to continue concentrating on the production of vital diabetes treatments, over other semaglutide-based products. The company has stated that it will prioritise treatments for existing patients, rather than focusing on introducing new people to Wegovy weight loss treatments. ‘We support Diabetes UK in urging clinicians to follow Department for Health and Social Care guidance, which states clinicians should not prescribe these drugs outside of their licensed use until the supply issues are rectified. ‘It’s not only in the UK that restricted supplies are causing problems; there’s a worldwide shortage. America’s FDA lists Wegovy and certain Ozempic dosages as being in short supply. So too does Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which says supplies of Ozempic will remain limited to diabetes treatments only until at least the end of December 2023, and that patients prescribed Ozempic for other conditions should contact their doctor to have their treatment reassessed. ‘The shortage doesn’t only impact on semaglutide-based drugs. All “GLP-1 analogues”, as this family of drugs are known, are in short supply. These include the brands Ozempic, Rybelsus, Trulicity, Victoza, Saxenda, Byetta and Bydureon. This appears to be pan-market disruption, complicated by exceeding demands. ‘All these drugs: - signal to your body to make more insulin (the hormone that controls the amount of sugar in your blood) - reduce the amount of glucose (gluconeogenesis) that your liver makes - slow down the digestion of food, so that it takes longer for your body to absorb the sugar from meals - reduce your appetite by increasing satiety ‘It’s the final effect that has created this unexpected surge in demand. However, there is some welcome news of another GLP-1 analogue drug just about to reach the UK. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has approved the use of tirzepatide (brand name Mounjaro) for treating type 2 diabetes in England and Wales. Supplies of this new drug should come on stream within three months. ‘Again, it’s vital this new medication is prioritised as a further treatment for type 2 diabetes, rather than for other purposes. It, too, is likely to be in hot demand by people seeking to lose weight the easy way. In the US, clinical weight loss trials show Mounjaro is even more effective than Ozempic, with patients achieving 26.6% weight loss over 84 weeks. ‘By 2030, diabetes cases in the UK will have risen by 50% compared to 2007 levels, according to Diabetes UK. Unmanaged or undiagnosed diabetes is one of the leading causes of mortality. Diabetes is usually linked to factors such as weight, lifestyle, age and family history. One in ten people will have diabetes by the end of the next decade, and one in three will be at a much increased risk of developing it. The truly frightening thing is that it is quite common for people to have diabetes and not know about it. ‘Fortunately, there is a simple blood test that will categorically confirm whether or not you have type 2 diabetes – even in the earliest stages, long before any symptoms have developed. This home test checks your levels of HbA1c. This biomarker is used to confirm whether you have (or are at risk of developing) diabetes. For anyone who already knows they have diabetes, regular HbA1c checks are also essential to monitor progress. ‘London Medical Laboratory’s “Diabetes - Diagnosis and Monitoring test” can be taken at home through the post, or at one of the many drop-in clinics that offer these tests across London and nationwide in over 95 selected pharmacies and health stores.
