La Maison Rose Paris is a city of contrasts with some buildings remaining unchanged, retaining their architectural integrity - whilst others are off-beat and modern. ‘La Maison Rose’ endures as one of the former - since it was first built to fill the triangular plot of land at the corner of rue de l'Abreuvoir and rue des Saules. The pastel pink house with green shutters and dreamy vines growing up the side of the neighbouring walls is perched on one of the most beautiful cobblestone streets in Montmartre. ‘La Maison Rose’ first opened around 1910. The restaurant’s founders were a French-Spanish couple associated with Pablo Picasso. Laure “Germaine” Gargallo Florentin Pichot opened the restaurant with her husband, the Catalan painter Ramon Pichot Girones after marrying him in 1905. Germaine had previously been a lover and close acquaintance of Picasso before settling down with Pichot. Germaine and Picasso stayed close friends after their relationship ended. It was artist Maurice Utrillo (1883-1855) born in the 18th district who first immortalised ‘La Maison Rose’ in 1930 - and its iconic exterior. The painting entitled ‘The Little Pink House’ became famous, not because of the subject of the painting, but rather that it sold for so much at auction. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #paris #pastelpink #restaurant #montmartre pablopicasso #carloscasagemas #salvadordali #ramonpichotgirones #belleepoque #lauregermainegargalloflorentinpichot #lamaisonrose (at La Maison Rose) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHhzOThFDYe/?igshid=17cav0hk77qb8

La Maison Rose When La Maison Rose was purchased in 1905 by Laure Germaine (Laure “Germaine” Gargallo Florentin Pichot) and her artist husband Ramon Pichot Girones, the building was beige in colour. Germaine, who was always an artistic person and once Picasso’s muse and lover, decided to paint the building pink after a trip to Barcelona where the colours inspired her. Together Germaine and Pichot added the words ‘La Maison Rose’ written in green with shutters painted the same shade to match. Pichot was a very well-known painter in his native Catalona, Spain. It was there he nurtured a fledgling 10 year old Salvador Dali when he was just beginning to paint. Pichot regularly spent time in Cadaquès where he met Dali’s family, quickly becoming a mentor to Dali. Germaine was the former love interest of Picasso who she had met in Spain. Picasso's best friend was a painter and poet by the name of Carlos Casagemas. Picasso and Casagemas traveled from Spain to Paris together to visit the World's Fair in autumn 1900. It was in Paris that Casagemas met Germaine. Casagemas quickly fell in love with Germaine but Germaine, who was married to Pichot, spurned Casagemas’ affections. Casagemas became obsessive and Germaine constantly fought off his advances. On February 17, 1901, at the cafe ‘L’Hippodrome’ on boulevard de Clichy in front of his invited guests, including Germaine, Casagemas committed suicide. Picasso, who was not there that night, felt so guilty that he was unable to prevent his friend from suicide, he became severely depressed. This phase in Picasso’s life is known as ‘The Blue Period’. It was during this time that Picasso painted ‘The Death of Casagemas (1901) meant as a celebrate of his friend’s life. After Casagemas’ death Picasso continued to visit Germaine. It was a comfort to Picasso. Eventually, Germaine became a muse for Picasso. Even in their dotage the two remained close friends and Picasso was often found at 'La Maison Rose’. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #paris #pastelpink #restaurant #montmartre pablopicasso #carloscasagemas (at La Maison Rose) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHhzIl5lC8F/?igshid=att0tpr4xfuf
