Internal Section (Positron / Square - PS1 - 1999)

“Often described as a twisted fusion between Tempest and S.T.U.N. Runner, this Positron game was released exclusively in Japan in 1999, at a time when the PlayStation games catalogue was already vast and varied. Dynamic and irreverent, Internal Section is essentially a complex ‘tube shooter’, an unusual angle that can be considered a welcome addition at a time when horizontal and vertical scrolling shooters were predominant. The mere sight of the initial presentation, or the bizarre imagery printed on the bizarre game manual, tells Internal Section apart from a common shooter. Instead of acquiescing to the adolescent anime characters and pseudo-plots, it evokes the same mature, impersonal and hi-tech ambience of the demoscene computer art subculture. Each of eight levels is divided into four sub stages (A, B, C, D and Boss Fight). When the level guardians are reached, game scheme switches from its tubular form to that of a circular rail drawn around the enemy, where greater shot precision is often required. Internal Section‘s gameplay is utterly unique, allowing the player to instantly choose between twelve different shot types, each of them based on a Chinese zodiac sign: apart from dodging bullets and other obstacles, the key to success lies in the use of the appropriate sign for each situation. Far from a hardcore shooting game experience, Internal Section is all about the experience and aesthetics – rather than superhuman skills – with scattered checkpoints and infinite continues that make it a short, albeit extremely enjoyable video game.

The first impact created by Internal Section originates from the awkward graphic style. Their lack of texture mapping is properly compensated with the addition of smooth and lustrous shading, drawn in vivid colors and wonderful contrasts. Flat polygons pervade the screen as each level displays a predominant color, and each sub-stage exhibits a rich and artful array of pictorial themes. Due to its spartan aesthetics, this uncanny Squaresoft release is bound to be compared with Rez, released by SEGA two years later.

iS also aspires to a perfectly balanced blend of audiovisual and gameplay, including a carefully selected techno music playlist. While not as memorable as the licensed soundtrack from games such as WipeOut, the disk includes 16 original themes that help bring some strong sense of rhythm into the game experience. Similar to Ridge Racer, it also lets the player swap the game disk for an audio CD, essentially giving it a customizable soundtrack. Customizations also include the selection of different ambiences for the levels, a factor that dramatically increases the game’s appeal and replay value.

If carefully observed today, in light of modern shoot’em up revivalisms, iS has achieved a certain state of grace, having risen to a level that only a handful of its counterparts were able to attain. Its flat polygon graphics running smoothly on the television screen and its responsive controls prevent the game from looking or feeling obsolete. In fact, everything about iS contemplates innovation, as well as a very strong desire to evade the usual patterns that have long infected this stagnant genre. Did anyone already ask for tattoo headcanons for Chairman sera?

Thank you for your patience while I recovered from the holidays and finished researching for the backlog of requests I've received! I love reading for these. I actually got 2 requests for a tattoo head canon for Tojo 3rd Chairman Sera Masaru around the same time. He's a popular guy!

For Sera I decided on one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals. They are Yasha - a race of warriors and one of the Eight Deva Guardians of Buddhism, (along with dragons and Karura) who were the personal protectors of Yakushi Nyorai ("Medicine Buddha"). Sera is a member of Nikkyo Consortium, a select group within the Tojo that works as assassins looking after the well-being of the Tojo. Sera later becomes the 3rd chairman of the Tojo during the events of Yakuza 1.

The Heavenly Generals each represent the 12 cosmic directions, the 12 months of the year, and 12 hours of daylight. Each one is representative of one of the signs of the Chinese zodiac, though there is some disagreement over which warrior is associated with which sign. Sera is listed as being born in 1956, the year of the monkey (coincidentally, the same sign as Kiryu). The Heavenly General for the monkey is either Anchira Taisho or Makora. The generals are not really represented as having individual personalities beyond being fierce warriors, but The Monkey is characterized by being clever, witty and mischievous.

For a flower I chose the Cape Primrose, which in Japanese flower language carries the meaning "listen to whispers" and "respond to trust" which I thought would fit a man in charge of a secret sect of the Tojo, and how trust and secrets play into his role in 1. Sera works as an assassin in the Nikkyo Consortium in 0, working to eliminate anyone who threatens the Tojo, and works his way up to chairman by the events of 1. He is the one keeping Yumi's identity secret, and is involved in the plan involving the 10 billion yen.

BACKGROUND

IN THE STREETS OF DISTRICT TWELVE, MADGE UNDERSEE STICKS OUT FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS. her dresses, always beautiful, are always a tad too new. she never learns what it means to go hungry. when it’s time to sign up for tesserae, madge’s family never does so. always the precocious child, madge asks her father, mayor undersee, why she couldn’t opt-in and donate the rationing to someone who needed it more. he informs her of the stakes, and she is wholly unfazed. ensuring someone else could eat, at the risk of entering the arena, appeared a small price to pay. 

mayor undersee’s gaze darkens. to think she saw so little value in her own life. she was of his blood, and her brazen attempt to throw away her life becomes a slight against himself. after all, he and his wife had done to ensure she never be met with hardship. when he storms off wordlessly, madge is made to piece together her wrongdoing through her father’s silence. 

friends come and go easier than expected. madge is kind, but she’s somewhat eccentric. her interests frequently deviated from that of her peers, which became the most notable amidst conversation. madge, who knew little outside the confines of the undersee household and the piano lessons she frequented, was nowhere near the conversationalist most would’ve expected from her. still, she welcomes each and every friend.

it takes several failing friendships for madge to realize that there is a flaw in her friendship philosophy. she realizes that those select few people would only desire association based on her name alone. that was no way to sustain a friendship, and they tended to fizzle out one way or another. the people she often considered her friends most likely didn’t realize how dear they were to her. you could care about people from arm’s length.

when katniss volunteers, madge is reminded of their shared lunch table. she’d noticed her sitting alone one day. next thing she knows, she’s sitting diagonally from her— her other table mates watching her perplexedly. no words are exchanged beyond awkward first greetings, but madge knows there’s something about the girl she likes. it’s why when the time arrives, madge relinquishes her aunt’s mockingjay pin, insisting that she wear it in the arena— meant to serve as a symbol of district twelve.

when rumor of rebel activity begins circulating, mayor undersee becomes increasingly suspicious of his only daughter. while she tended to walk the straight and narrow, she’d proven on more than one occasion that a bleeding heart often led her to trouble. she’d have no particular interest in leaving home, but mayor undersee arranges for her to attend music school in the capitol.  she’s somewhere far away from the rebellious district. 

when she graduates, she lands (though she suspects this was also arranged by her father) a position in one of the top orchestra companies as a grand pianist. madge is ethereal when she plays, giving into the piano’s every whim. still, it's no secret that her talent surpasses her interest. she possessed the notoriety and accolades, but her heart wasn’t really in it. it’s during a visit home that madge stumbles across rebel activity without realizing so. it’s almost immediately that she knows what she needs to do.

madge abruptly abandons her career as a grand pianist. to the outside world, she’s merely taking a hiatus to find herself, to perform with the same vivacity as she once did. she begins training as a volunteer medic— a position of her own choosing (a freedom she’s unaccustomed to.) there are faces she recognizes, faces she recognizes in a way she didn’t before— with the newfound knowledge of what they’re all working toward. 

FUN FACTS

madge has a ten year old calico cat named sweetheart. she adopted her while working in the symphony, wanting company in her quiet studio apartment.

while she and her parents are on good terms, they were never particularly close to begin with, as if there was immediate distance between them the moment she's born.

despite her father being the one to insist on her playing piano, madge has always held a special appreciation for music.

training as a medic makes her feel differently, though. she feels fulfilled in a way the music never made her.

2022 Wrap up (4 Top 5)

Hello and happy holidays! Over the last few weeks I have been pouring over lists of the top albums, songs and movies of 2022, thrilled to see what the world (or at least high budget magazines) are saying about these past twelve months. This year has felt a little more ‘normal’ (not really sure what that word means anymore, or if it even should exist) than the past two and as a result we have received a lot of exciting art.

If I love anything, its making lists. I love keeping track of what media I have consumed, things I need to buy, people I have been romantic with (zodiac signs included), and ranking my various ‘best of’s’.  Below you will find 4 lists of my Top 5 of 2022; TV shows, movies, albums and songs. Each selection is deserving of its own several page deep-dive, but I limited myself to a one-sentence review of each as I know attention spans are quite fleeting these days (my own included). Please enjoy and share your own thoughts!

TV Shows:

HOT D, Season 1

Game of Thrones with a bigger budget, advanced technology and more feminism.

2. Rings of Power, Season 1

Like HOT D, Lord of the Rings but with more than just white men, and a $1M/minute budget (yes, you read that right).

3. Our Flag Means Death, Season 1

Taika Waititi’s new project about gay pirates—do I need to say anything more?

4. Derry Girls, Season 3

Martin Scorsese likes this show, so if my endorsement isn’t enough for you his should be.

5. The Summer I Turned Pretty, Season 1

I feel like most of my life is trying to get back to being a teenage girl and this show really did that for me.

Movies:

Bones and All, Luca Guadagnino

A coming of age cannibal love story that makes you scream, jump, plug your ears, cover your eyes, laugh and cry—what more could you want?

2. Aftersun, Charlotte Wells

Beautiful imagery, incapacitatingly sad plot (my favorite juxtaposition).   

3. X, Ti West

A love letter to horror film, chock full of references that made me feel like all my years spent on horror amounted to something.

4. Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Halina Rejin

I love blood, I love girls, I love a whodunit, I love jokes—this is my dream film, also Pete Davidson is in it.

5. Tar, Todd Field

This movie is making fun of high-brow art which is funny because this movie is loved by people who love high-brow art.

Albums:

Preacher’s Daughter, Ethel Cain

A 75-minute concept album tackling love, abuse, lots of God, sex and being cannibalized with memorizing vocals, quite the feat for a debut LP.

2. Being Funny in a Foreign Language, The 1975

From dick jokes and a pop song about incel mass shootings to devastating breakup anthems, this album makes you experience most emotions.

3. Renaissance, Beyoncé

This album proves that Beyoncé can literally do anything well; a disco-club-banger-no-skips album invocative of the 70s but that absolutely hits in 2022? No problem. (sorry, this is technically two sentences)

4. Motomami, ROSALIA

Being A Bad Bitch in a Foreign Language: I have no idea what she’s saying but the emotion she conveys through her voice and the flawlessly produced beats transcend language.

5. Caprisongs, FKA Twigs

Another club-banger of an album which deals with being both hot and sad at the same time, relatable.

Part of the Band, The 1975

There is so much to say about this song but the ‘Vaccinista, tote bag chic baristas’ line changed my life and I haven’t been the same since.

2. Killer, FKA Twigs

She called this ‘a song for baddies with a tear in their eyes’ and I cannot say anything better.

3. Anti-Hero, Taylor Swift

Famous for being vulnerable, Taylor reaches a new level of honesty with this song, expressing the very unrelatable difficulties that come along with being Taylor Swift in an extremely relatable way.

4. Hard Times, Ethel Cain

A song about a horrific topic, sung in the most ethereal way with stunning guitar accompaniment— once again, we love juxtaposition on this blog.   

5. Weird Goodbyes, The National Ft. Bon Iver

The saddest lyrics you will ever hear, overlayed with a sick 808 beat.

Born in Gold Coast, Australia on December 23, 1999, Michaela Sommers was introduced to the world of motorsports from a early age. Her father, Tobias, and his younger brother, Travis Sommers, were avid Formula racing fans who idolized the likes of Senna, Schumacher, and Lauda. The motorsports bug skipped over Sommers' older sister, Samantha, before biting her at the mere age of six. By her ninth birthday, Michaela was competing in karting championships along the Australian east coast.

Despite her natural aptitude for racing, Michaela recalls facing discrimination for both her race and gender quite early on while karting. Despite the negativity that would swirl around her reputation, the young driver would win her first national championship at the age of twelve with plenty of rumors circling concerning her future in the sport. Sommers would attempt to enter her first international competition, but was barred from entry after her father lost his job in the summer of 2012.

Without much hope, Michaela would step back from racing for nearly six months before eventually deciding to join her uncle who had moved to England after his marriage just years prior. Travis then became Michaela's manager, working endlessly to ensure his niece would be able to continue climbing the karting ladder. Shortly after her move to England, her uncle would connect with Australian F1 driver Mark Webber who would travel to watch her race in a regional competition in 2013. Stunned by her potential, Webber helped the young girl to catch the attention of a racing team competing in the Ginetta Junior Championship alongside future McLaren teammate Lando Norris. Sommers' transition to racing cars would prove successful, securing a junior championship at just 14 years old.

Sommers would continue working through the ranks, receiving extensive media attention and comparisons to Lewis Hamilton as a teenager. Spending one year at the Formula 3 level, Michaela would race for British team Jagonya Ayam in 2015 finishing fifth in the championship and second in the rookie cup, both below Charles Leclerc. Her performance would catch the attention of Italian team Prema Racing who signed her to development for higher formulae alongside Pierre Gasly for the 2016 season.

Despite an average result, ending her rookie season in sixth place, Prema would resign the Australian who would be simultaneously be selected to join the Ferrari driver development program for the 2017 season. That same year, Sommers would wrap up her Formula 2 season in second place, once again behind Charles Leclerc.

Eventually, Michaela would finally secure a Formula 2 championship in 2018 while signing on as a reserve driver for Ferrari. Her official Formula One debut came after Sommers signed on to be Alfa Romeo's second-seat driver for the 2019 season, securing one-point in her debut race before finishing her rookie season in eighth place.
