The History of Bape

For my video posts, I’m going to stick with Threaducation. Enjoy!

  Nigo (Bape founder) was born in Maibashi Japan on December 23, 1970. In his teen years, he developed an interest for music and fashion and when he was 16, he bought a set of turntables with the hope of becoming a dj. Who really sparked his interest in fashion was Hiroshi Fujiwara who was known as practically one of the “founding fathers” of streetwear. 

  After graduating highschool, Nigo decided to move to Tokyo Japan to pursue his love for fashion. Once he arrived in Tokyo, Nigo enrolled in the Bunka Fashion College. While going to this college, he didn’t really focus on his studies, he focused on partying. 

  What made a big dent around this time was becoming close with Jun Takahashi. When they met, they bonded over their shared love for streetwear. Nigo started making a name for himself in the dj-ing community, but also was known for his distinct style. Hiroshi Fujiwra noticed Nigo’s style and hired Nigo as his personal assistant. 

  In 1993, Nigo had decided to start his own journey into the world of fashion. Nigo and Jun Takahashi founded the branded Nowhere. Nigo and Jun were selling many different kinds of streetwear brands. Nigo ran into a problem with the store he and Takahashi created because the store was divided into two sections. One section was Takahashi’s side and Nigo’s was the other. Takahashi’s side was selling more than Nigo’s which was good for the store, but not so great for Nigo. 

  Hiroshi was made aware of the store’s issue and had done a 5 hour marathon of Planet of the Apes which became the inspiration for Bape. Skatething had made a graphic design for Bape and Nigo started printing the logo onto T-shirts.

    Even though Bape was a new brand, people started seeing Bape as a higher end brand and soon enough, Bape shirts were seen all around the city. Soon enough, Bape was brought into NYC. In 1994, Biggie Smalls would be seen wearing Bape. 

In 1999, Nigo pulled Bape off the shelves of many retail stores and opened the first ever Bape store in Hong-Kong. 

  In the 2000′s, Nigo introduced the iconic shark camo Bape hoodie and the Bapesta (Bape shoes). The Bapesta was a reimagined version of a Nike Airforce. 

Airforces were a very popular model of shoe in the US, so when the Bapesta was released, they were a big hit. 

  In the early 2000′s Pharrell would be seen wearing mostly Bape which definitley helped Bape skyrocket it the fashion community which  lead a Bape store to be opened in NYC. Besides Pharrell, Lil Wayne and Kanye West were also seen wearing Bape. In this period, Nigo and Kanye were close friends and became collaborators. 

In 2007, Bape released the Kanye West Bapesta. In this time period, Bape was collabing with even more brands like Supreme, Kaws, Undercover and Starwars. 

��Nigo later had sold Bape for good because of the fact that he was losing money. He sold it for under 3 millions dollars. He started a new brand called Human Made which shared many style similarities to Bape. Even though Nigo made a less successful brand, he was much happier and that’s all that matters.
