This recipe is from Somalia. I picked it up by observing my Somali friends during Ramadan and was able to create my own version of it. I can't stop eating them because they are so delicious. They are offered at Ramadan meals, weddings, parties, and other events. An encased cone-shaped package of seasoned ground beef is deep-fried. Ground beef can be changed up by being replaced with shredded beef.

history.
cousin to the rulers of tanzania, malaika knew an advantageous marriage was in her future, a fact she didn't resent but rather looked forward to, but she didn't imagine queenship awaited her. both her parents passed when she was young so her older brother and her were raised alongside their cousins. until her uncle, looking to establish stronger ties with other nations, decided that mal should spend a few years in ethiopia as a guest of the solomans. she loved her time there, spending time in the palace menagerie, reading in the royal library, and learning from the royal tutors. it was during those years that she developed a friendship with the crown prince, who would become her best friend and her first crush.
her time in ethiopia didn't last forever. a brief conflict between her uncle and the current rulers caused mal to be summoned home. she was disappointed to say the least. to distract herself, she dedicated herself to her studies, spending hour upon hour in the library, reading about whatever subject she could get her hands on. it was politics and strategy that interested mala most. she proved herself to have a sharp mind for it. while her brothers and cousins were training for battle, she would sneak into her uncle's meetings and watch from the shadows; the advisors and other political officials often had to tolerate her endless questions.
eventually the short conflict between tanzania and ethiopia began cooling and as it did the two rulers began talks of reestablishing ties between the two countries. a variety of options were discussed but a betrothal proved the most beneficial for both. mal's uncle initially recommended his own daughter but the ethiopian king believed mal would be a better match since she had lived in ethiopia before and had been friends with the prince.
it wasn't long before mal was returning to ethiopia. the marriage wouldn't occur for a few years but living in the country she'd one day rule would give her time to adjust and learn. the current queen took malaika under her wing. under her guidance, mal added the art of healing to her repertoire of skills, one that was needed due to the battles needed to defend the country's lands.
malaika dedicated herself fully to the role of queen, standing proudly by her husband's side and advising him. the longer she ruled and directly saw the darker side of politics, the more wary mal grew of outsiders. ethiopia was blessed that it could stand on its own and thrive; she didn't want that threatened because they let others take advantage of them. her mistrust only grew when chala and her welcomed their first child into the world. as their family grew, she had more and more reason to be skeptical of outsiders.
the queen dowager's death utterly devastated mal. she'd viewed the woman as a second mother and her most important mentor. the two women would often sit together for a few hours everyday conversing, not only on matters affecting ethiopia but more casual conversation. grief and a desire for justice have created a dangerous storm within her; she won't rest until those responsible are punished.
headcanons.
an expert political strategist. she has studied the writings and teachings of many who have come before her, becoming well versed in countless methods and fashioning what ones work best in each situation. if her husband is the warrior then mal is the brain, no less of a warrior, simply one who fought with different weapons.
she's also a skilled healer, a skill that the late dowager queen taught her. she travels across ethiopia frequently to help treat the people if there's ever a battle or a rise of illness.
her knowledge of healing herbs eventually lead her to looking into herbs and concoctions that could do the opposite. poisons fascinated the queen. she began experimenting with them and has brought some of them with her to india as a precaution.
malaika loves being a wife and a mother. her family is extremely important to her; she would truly do anything for them.
around her family and those who have earned her trust, mal is extremely warm and empathetic. but whenever strangers are around, she can come across as cool and distant but still respectful - no one can say she doesn't conduct herself as a true queen should.
in secret, she started a network of spies a few years ago. they have mainly serve as an information gathering force, a safeguard in case other nations try plotting against ethiopia, but as tensions have grown, mal has begun looking for ways that her spies can act, ensuring that ethiopia remains one step ahead and even stop potential enemies before they can strike.
a big lover of animals! the menagerie is her favorite place in the ethiopian palace. she has two pets that she considers her own out of the animals that call the palace home: a female leopard who she nursed back to health and a snake that was given to her as a gift.

Dur-Dur Band Int. - The Berlin Session - return (after decades) of a top Somali band
The first studio album of its kind since the golden days of Mogadishu came to a halt three decades ago. Glamorous discos and beachfront stages disappeared as the city was bombed to the ground. Like a sleeping giant patiently awaiting its revival, we can finally hear a new recording by the living representatives of that distinct era so far heard only on reissues. This record captures the historic reunion which took place in 2019 in Germany’s capital. London-based Dur-Dur Band Int. - itself an eight-piece powerhouse of Somali live-music - is backing three legendary singers. Sounding equally Asian as it does African, a definitive proto-Reggae groove channels the titans as they devotedly draw the bridge between the sorrow of all that was lost and the delight of a magic which survived.
So Why Did We Have To Wait So Long To Hear This Album?
By the end of the 1980s, Somalia’s capital (Xamar as the locals call it) was dancing its final dance. The musicians strived to keep it up as the country fell apart, but when the war eventually entered the capital, exile was inevitable. The national theatre was a battleground and the hotels became the backdrops for destruction, many remaining in ruin to this very day.
Dur-Dur Band for example was then active in the 90s in nearby Addis Abeba, yet most of the scene was eventually dispersed over 4 continents. For a decade, Mogadishu’s veteran musicians remained dormant. For Xabiib, the glamour of stardom and Gucci had been replaced with an occasional wedding - singing alongside a backing track. In 2003, a fund-raiser was held in London for the reconstruction of Hargeisa’s National Theater which had been bombed to the ground during the war. Somali singers, actors and comedians from all over the diaspora were invited. A new Kooxda was formed around Dur-Dur’s founding member Abdillahi Cujeeri - calling itself Dur-Dur Band Int. Yet for the last twenty years they’ve been performing mostly within the Somali community.
In 2015 Berlin-based Nicolas “Çaykh” Sheikholeslami was enticed by Somali music. Little did he know that his mixtape Au Revoir, Mogadishu Vol. 1 - Songs From Before The War would end up sparking a massive international interest in Somali music. Soon he was approached by Ostinato Records with the idea to create a legit compilation featuring those sounds. Thus, Sheikholeslami went on to co-curate ‘Sweet As Broken Dates: Lost Somali Tapes from the Horn of Africa’ which received a Grammy nomination in 2018. Berlin’s prestigious HKW took notice and granted him an opportunity to put together a concert with artists from the golden era. Luckily for us, Nicolas sensed the chance for a recording session to be arranged - and that is how we got this album.

I have this headcanon that I can’t get out of my head where John’s hair actually has a similar texture to the natural hair of black people.
The combo of blond hair + texture was common in John’s region on Lorien but isn’t on Earth. John and Henri find this out when people start commenting on it and asking questions they don’t know yet know how to answer. It makes them both anxious.
Henri decides maintaining the texture and colour is an unnecessary risk. He winds up treating John’s hair with some chemicals that result in it staying straight even when it gets wet.
Fast forward many years to the end of UaO and the war is over. There is no reason to hide anymore. John is in that cave and his mental health is at an all-time low; hé doesn’t have the motivation for hair care besides washing it. So new growth comes in natural but the old stuff is still straight as ever. John hates the difference (it makes him feel ugly) so he shaves all his hair off.
Fast forward again to when New Lorien is established and John is doing much better. His hair has grown back all coils and he’s doing well. He’s reconnected with the Garde and made new friends. He starts talking to the others and Lexa, learning new things about Lorien and begins reconnecting with his culture. Still his hair care routine really hasn’t changed.
Then John befriends a young Somali woman who was displaced from her home by violence. The New Lorien team responded when she asked for help and now she’s staying permanently. Somehow John finds himself discussing his hair (of all things) with her and the depth of emotion he feels surprises him.
From there, somehow someway she helps him figure out how to properly care for his hair. John starts making an old recipe for a cream that Henri used to make for his hair (adapted for earth ingredients). The woman starts experimenting with different styles. Some suit his hair better than others.
Just: John’s hair journey as a physical manifestation of his trauma and healing process from hiding his identity and losing parts of his culture to survive to learning to live without a war looming over him, connecting with his culture and the people around him. Becoming happy and healthy and caring for himself.
Bonus: In John’s region of Lorien it was traditional for people to style their in braids and twists on top of their head that formed the circular symbol for a word. For example, at a wedding someone might wear “unity” or “love” on the top of their head.
John is inspired by this and with this friends’ help he styles his hair like this for a major UN event with world leaders. Up until this point John has not worn his hair naturally to an event like this, partially because he hasn’t been to one in awhile. John is PROUD. He holds his head high walking into the event, though he gets a bit nervous when reporters start probing his hairstyle choice.
John is white passing, especially if you squint (the blond hair and blue eyes contrast with his tan skin and the shape of his eyes and nose). So when he walks in with this hairstyle some people scream appropriation. They don’t know what his hair texture is, his culture’s history of similar styles, how this particular design connects him to that culture. They don’t know about the long conversations he’s had. On the other hand, are the racist people spew threats and demeaning words, viewing him as more of a threat now than they did hours ago. When people hear John’s explanation the former group becomes more accepting, but the latter more viscous.
No matter what anyone says John is proud. He’s connecting with his culture in ways he hadn’t dreamt possible. He’s HEALING
