i’m so glad i found this blog!!!! i’m now interested in mycology lmao — i hope to learn lots about it ^^
do you know any good books/websites/etc. on mycology that i can look at? it’d be greatly appreciated if you could list some! /nf
all your facts are really cool and informative!! :DD
anon, this is such a cool ask !! feel free to ask me anything like this anytime. i love sharing info even outside the FOTDs :-) here are some lists-
what i use / recommend :
field guide to mushrooms & other fungi of south africa by marieka gryzenhout & gary b. goldman (likely less useful to people outside RSA)
using pinterest to find pretty photos, then reading through the wikipaedia for more info. ^^
inaturalist website !!
the fantastic fungi documentary on netflix.
fascinated by fungi podcast.
@wyldefungi, @fungitopia, @mushrooms-switzerland & similar blogs. (let me know if you want to be untagged)
this is all i've currently looked at since mycology books are rare & very expensive here (though i do have a wishlist) !!
what i've seen people enjoy :
entangled life by merlin sheldrake.
fungus identification apps like shroom iD.
local wildlife tours.
i also recommend checking local bookstores / online stores cos what you have in your country will be very different to mine. ^^

If one were to visit South Africa, what sites and activities would you recommend? Also, which is safer cash or card?
South Africa is one of the most dangerous countries for crime (especially violent crime), so 100% card. Do not carry cash.
It depends what sort of things you enjoy, but I would recommend visiting the Western Cape what is called "The Garden Route" here. It's the most beautiful part of the country and you can get a LOT of tourist attractions involving our nature. The Garden Route is also along the coast so you can have a choice of visiting Game Parks to get guided tours to see our wildlife including Elephants and lions.
Some parks have Rhinos too but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T TELL PEOPLE ON SOCIAL MEDIA WHICH PARKS HAVE THEM AND DO NOT PUT PHOTOS ONLINE!!!!
We recently have an old bull poached because an international tourist couldn't keep their fucking twitter to themselves and HAD to let everybody know which park had a large bull. And that tourist got that animal killed. And yes I am STILL fucking angry about it.
Anyway
Being along the coast you can also get things like charted vessels to go see the whales that come to our shores.
If you go to Cape Town you can also enjoy a lot of the art scenes, visit Table Mountain, visit Robben Island to see where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, but also you can check out the old Dutch forts and the canon which fires every hour on the hour.
Just be sure to have a VERY good idea of where your GPS is taking you and avoid driving through anywhere that looks dodgy. It would be best to get in touch with a local of some kind who can help you get around in a way that is safe if you are going to any bigger city of any kind.
Do not go to Johannesburg.

“We are here to break male dominance in the field of birding,” says Judith Mirembe, the chair of the Uganda Women Birders Club, as the group reaches the botanical gardens on a day where the weather cannot decide between light rain and sunshine.
Mirembe, in the check shirt, with other female birders, using their phones to find out details about a bird they’ve spotted.
“There are very few female birders in Uganda. The tourism industry in general is yet to fully appreciate women,” she adds.
Two dozen women follow Mirembe in silence, hoping to spot a “lifer” – a bird on their wishlist. “Everyone has a different lifer,” says Linda Nakalema, one of the club’s 80 members. “We see the red-chested cuckoo all the time in Uganda but people from South Africa are very excited when they see it because it only migrates there seasonally. It is their lifer. For others it is the marabou stork that we see scavenging through our rubbish every day. It looks so elegant when it flies.”
Tour companies describe Uganda as a paradise for birdwatchers. About 50% of Africa’s bird species, and 11% of the world’s, are found here. Uganda has the highest concentration of birds in Africa. The country’s birders have an ambitious target of bringing in an annual $700m in tourist revenue by 2030. In 2019, tourism in Uganda generated about $1.37bn, about 3.6% of total GDP.
Mirembe believes that female birders are entitled to a share of these earnings. At the International Conference for Women Birders the club hosted in Uganda earlier this month, female enthusiasts from all over the world met to discuss their unique challenges and discuss how, together, they can bring more money to women in the sector.
“Birding is expensive and many Ugandan women are struggling to meet costs such as buying binoculars, telescopes and cameras to record and share the birds they sight with other people,” she says, adding that cultural expectations of women as caregivers mean their spouses may not let them go for week-long birdwatching tours. “This is our reality. Even tourist operators do not take women seriously and we know that we must work twice as hard as men to get the same respect.”
Members of Uganda’s Women Birders Club, which started in 2013, meet in Entebbe every Sunday. It is a training ground and a support network. Many of the women already have careers in tourism and wildlife. Others join to make new friends and learn.
After the satisfaction of spending hours looking for birds and the joy that reverberates through the group when someone sights, accurately names and describes a bird, the women sit down for lunch in a restaurant. Over smoked beef and matooke (mashed green bananas), they speak of a time when birding could be a hazardous pursuit for women.
People would see women with binoculars, accuse them of trying to steal land and beat them up. Others could be hostile to the women because they wore trousers – a taboo in some Ugandan cultures. They recall tour operators who would send them to the field with drivers who’d sexually harass them and tourist accommodation where the women would be put in a shared room with men.
Miremebe watches the younger enthusiasts with pride as she tells them how Uganda was the first country in Africa to start a female birders’ club, and how there are now similar associations in Rwanda and Kenya.
“We must not let fear hold us back from opportunity. We need to keep it going against all odds,” is Mirembe’s farewell cry, as the women leave the restaurant and head back into Entebbe alongside the tired beachgoers and weary market-sellers.

Week 2
BLOG PROMPT: Describe your ideal role of environmental interpreter. What might it entail? Where might it be? What skills might you need? (Keep these all in mind as you begin to work on your assignments – tailor these to that ideal job!)
Hello again everyone, I hope your first week of classes has gone well!
I have two ideas for what my ideal position as an environmental interpreter would be. The first being something that I would consider to be more self-serving and the other would be a position where I could promote change on a grand scale.
Let us dive in!
First, let’s begin with the position of nature interpreter that 7-year-old Olivia would truly enjoy. Something I’ve always wanted to do since I was very young was to live in some country in Africa and constantly be surrounded by wildlife – I pretty much just wanted to be Jane Goodall! Working with a safari company and touring across the savannah is certainly the dream, perhaps Kruger National Park in South Africa. Having so much information about the wildlife, vegetation, and the history of the land while being able to share that knowledge with others has been a goal of mine for as long as I can remember. If I were to take the safari tour guide route, it would be important that I make the excursion enjoyable, but more importantly an experience that is moving and an experience that provokes thought of appreciating and preserving nature. By creating an adventure that is memorable and promoting of environmental stewardship for all visitors, it would be the goal that they can extend their learning and experience to others and become interpreters of their own. Showing how preserving and restoring biodiversity can help stabilize the planet’s natural systems and save life on Earth would be the main message I would wish to convey to my audience.
This same message would be conveyed if I were to take another route, possibly a more political and influential route. While it certainly wouldn’t be as exciting as being a safari tour guide, in order to create the most change on a large scale, speaking on panels or lobbying for climate action would be my other ideal job. This position would be more difficult to offer direct involvement or hands-on experience, but I would hope that interpreting nature in a more formal way to incentivize climate action could create real change. Providing accurate information and engaging audiences to take this issue to heart would be of great importance since I would be less likely to provide audiences with direct involvement; with that being said, I would hope that my interpretations encourage others to actively seek direct involvement in their communities and abroad. I would want my audiences to leave feeling empowered to take action, create change, and feel strongly about protecting their planet.
Regardless of the scale of interpretation, I hope that I always leave this message with those around me. Inspiring just one person to take action or stimulate a certain type of thinking can create a massive domino effect of change that you might not even be aware of. Never underestimate your importance and your impact on the world. If everyone thinks this way I think we could all collectively create enormous positive change.
I look forward to reading about everyone else’s dreams!
Cheers,
Olivia :)
