au where people start researching the shit out of glory's history in an attempt to identify who the fuck lord grim is

and they come upon su muqiu, who was rumored to be equally proficient in all gunner classes

(and he's been gone for years, so maybe he was on a smurf account. maybe he spent that time learning the other classes just as well?)

it starts in certain groups, then it spreads. to the forums. to the world chat.

and when ye xiu logs back on in the morning, he is met with his dead friend's name

it's everywhere. it's horrifying. he tells su mucheng to get off the internet immediately

(but for one second, he considers--he's already committed identity fraud once. wouldn't it be okay, to do it just once more? mucheng wouldn't contradict him--he is her brother, even if he isn't muqiu. and the thought of muqiu finally getting recognition, of his name being known-)

but he can't keep running away

so he ignores it, and confirms nothing, and when the actual identity reveal comes out muqiu's name dies again

(and he regrets a little. seeing muqiu's name splattered across forums, messages--it was almost like he was alive, like he would walk up any second now to apologize for stirring shit up again)

but muqiu knew when it was time to stop. it was impossible to build anew without levelling the old. ye xiu draws on this, tries to be the person muqiu thought he was, even though he was stupid and human and even his team betrayed him, even though muqiu could've done so much more than he had--

it doesn't matter. he keeps moving forward.

"I don't get it, what's so fun?" Zhang Jiale said, slumping against his arm as he watched the game over his friend's shoulder. "Just some back-and-forth hitting and killing, so what?"

"Aw, it's the satisfaction of crushing noobs! See, look at this guy and his clown equipment. He won't know what hit him." His friend grinned, jabbing a finger at the opponent he'd just been matched up with. The symbols and numbers onscreen meant nothing to Zhang Jiale, but he shrugged and watched on as the battle began.

"Crushing noobs" indeed, except, unfortunately for Zhang Jiale's friend, the roles had been reversed. As Zhang Jiale watched, the screen unfolded in a kaleidoscope of light and color—madness, yes, but if he peered closely he could just glimpse the method...

He hadn't even realized he'd been leaning forward, almost falling off his chair. "Hey," said Zhang Jiale, ignoring his friend's spluttering as DEFEAT flashed across the screen. "You said that was a Spitfire?"

"You play around too much," Ye Xiu said, thoroughly unimpressed.

"Yeah, alright, I'm never trying that again," Su Muqiu said, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I'm gonna be seeing colors for days..."

Rec notes: I’m starting off my recs with an easy one, because this fic came immediately to mind when I saw the prompt. There’s just so much packed into all 533 words of this fic. I love the vibe of it—so much history and emotion and nearly none of it is said out loud and it doesn’t need to be. One of my favorite parts of this is that Su Mucheng and Ye Xiu are in this together, and there’s such a heavy weight to their history that comes across in the fic. And also it’s sad pegging, which I think is great.
