[Mentions of murder, death, war, slave trade, harrasment against women and whatever awful things happened in the viking era. Only mentioned and used as examples. Mostly gender-neutral examples but female-leaning ones are there, too.]
[This part will specifically mention: conversations about love in general (but hinted at to be the Christianity's view of unconditional love. I tried to have it a bit more character-focused), qestioning your bond with Thorfinn, Thorfinn being stupid, speeding through the plot because Canute and Askeladd are the main characters now I guess]
You're Gonna Make Me Go, You're Gonna Make Me Drown...
The snow is cold.
Even as everything is barren and clad in a gravely sick and whitest cloud of snow to let the prince know it is a dream, the snow below still feels cold.
He sees the blood on Ragnar and he knows how cold he feels as well but compared to all that he has known in his life, the rest of the world seemed far colder.
The man stays warm even as he begged him not to go. As he threw caution to the wind at his wise words of loss, of how he must awaken and grow.
He tossed it all aside.
Yet the outside world is harsh and forced his awakening with a splatter of blood.
Canute awakened and saw a familiar back. Under him he could not feel the cold of the white snow of the blankets he laid upon as another round of blood dared to taint his skin.
A viking he reckoned as Björn bellowed like a yet-to-be-seen beast as he threw his arm back yet again to cause another blow to a skull. His eyes wide and milky as he wildly smashed about him. To the left, was the priest with his alcohol. In front of him, with their back facing him, was you.
"...You've woken up now, finally." You soberly began as you watched the one-sided fighting, "Björn and the rest of the band are fighting over you, prince. Whoever wins gets to keep you...and everyone but Björn is ready to abandon Askeladd."
"...Everybody but Björn and Thorfinn."
You explain the fighting before you and the one behind the hills. Askeladd taking hostage and Thorfinn dueling for his right to kill him. You, are stuck here.
The atmsophere is awkward. It was as if the roars of battle did not exist, as if the bloodbath before did not exist - rather there was a silence that was drowning. Looking over your shoulder, you saw that Canute bore the same demure face as you.
"...I've had a dream..."
He began with the faintest of smiles...
"...Ragnar was there and he bid goodbye. He's gone, I know that...now," He seemed to hesitate as he took a deep but shaky breath, "Now...there is no one in the world left who loves me anymore..."
You look back to the ground below you. The snow under had long melted, your hands red and freezing from the contact of it. Your voice barely found the strength to be anything above a whisper. "...I am sorry, prince...I never wished that upon you. This shouldn't have happened but Askeladd is..."
You gritted your teeth. Askeladd was many things...and he seemed to not have an ounce of...care in his heart for his band.
Why are you surprised? The man, the killer and kidnapper of royalty...the leader of a band so vile. Yet it still hurt to be here.
Hearing something shift behind you, though you were still lost in your own, useless thoughts.
"Why...are you out of all people apologizing?"
The grave tone in his question made you snap your eyes to him.
Canute's eyes, though red, seemed...cold and deep.
The evident frown on his face was now a scowl, however, one of slight confusion. Did he...always look like that?
For the first time, you hear him say your name.
"Why...are you out of all people not fighting?"
You startle as he so boldly took ahold of your shoulder. Before that, the prince barely could glance at you.
"You seem so rueful...yet you are one of them who brought me here. You took me hostage just like Askeladd, but you still provide me with your comfort."
Feeling yourself rise and back away from the young man, your eyes widened, mouth silent. Yet Canute did not let go.
"You provide me with your comfort, your pity, your blade and weapon. With your body as a shield yet only out of obligation. You shared your rations out of obligation when Ragnar was no more but still did so with a smile. Why?"
Canute finally seemed to frown.
"The day before...you have killed for one. You rose your blade to kill for Thorfinn and willingly tainted yourself with blood, with sin for his safety. The day after that you shared the warmth and laughter as if none of that happened."
"Prince..."
"You kill and attack everyone but each other...your kindness does not reach anyone but him. I must have simply been lucky...or did I seem so meek to you to lower your guard? For you to be so merciless and ruthless to bring the slightest bit if goodness to a man who is just as cruel...and now you are here demurred by all the unfairness of it all? Is that love?"
Startled like a deer, you shift back. Canute spoke in riddles to you...or, perhaps, the word 'love' did linger in the back of your mind from a time far before your viking era?
That is up to you - but it cannot be denied that this royal must have lost his mind.
"When you kill for each other, is that love? When you indulge in your jokes, is that love? Is it love that you two share while you spare the rest of the world none?"
"Is that a bond of love?"
Moving even further back meant facing Björn and while both men seemed unnerving right now, you'd rather face the perplexing Canute. Though you cannot give an answer to his riddles.
"Do you love Thorfinn? And does Thorfinn love you? I've been wondering that since I knew you two."
You look away. It is hard to say whether or not you spared love any thought since your time here in Askeladd's band. The man and the rest of these vile creatures did not seem to know any love. Not Björn who was killing his own comrades, nor any of the men below the hills that were indulging in the art of battle and its entertainment.
Yet did you know any love?
Did you know love when graced by the shines of the sun? Did you love the feeling of winter, even as it tried to freeze you to death in the darkest of nights? Did you show any love to the critters you've killed for food? Did you know love when greeted by Thorfinn and his many snarky remarks? If so, did you love him from the beginning, when he was his cold, stark self or did you gift him any now, now that you know you could trust him?
Trust him now, even after he left you here to fight for the killer of his father?
It is strange.
It is strange as Canute discussed with the priest. As he compared the love of Ragnar and that of Thorfinn - to which the young prince took offense to.
"Both of them are discriminating. They prefer parts of the world over another. Your Ragnar preferred you over a village, and the young viking seemed to not hold any love for anything but this one." He pointed at you.
It is vile. It is discriminating, their love. They do not love all as they should. Perhaps they couldn't.
And so, the priest pointed at you again; "And this one is no different. You know love and you discriminate. You kill and steal and now drown in the consequences of your lacking love. You showed it out of pity to His Higness, I presume...but it still holds nothing. Even you, as you hold the young viking boy dear to you, can only show unconditional love in your death."
You could only watch with wide eyes. Were they right? Were they wrong? Did they know love better than you did?
Did you even know what all of this meant?
Did you?
It did not seem so.
For you stared in awe at the sight before you - the meek Canute craddling the face of a wild beast, Björn, as he struggled to swing another final blow. Eyes watched intently as he lowered his bloodied fist and held him close to his heart. Embracing him like a mother - a brother - a kin - a hurting heart!
Shocked, you stumble up on your feet as Björn regained concsiousness of his dazed state. This weak royal calmed someone as bloodlusting and barbaric as Björn!
You barely could breath and so was the priest. Mumbling about a miracle as Canute ordered the rest of the surviving men to tend to his wounds - as if he was deserving of tenderness - and to ready a sleigh for him. For he was injured, and the injured needed treatment.
The men berated of the unfairness of it all. Of the rules of fighting and of the winners and the losers. One shall be graced with victory while the other shall suffer.
The prince turned to you, ordering you to help him gather the lost horses as well. Even now his touch was firm but gentle.
"I shall show you the meaning of your battles as well. Even your death if I must. For you still hold an inkling of love...I can offer you paradise on earth if you let it happen."
Feeling Like I'm Living In Your Shadow...
He lost conciousness for a good moment, he know he did...and even though it felt like an eternity, he reckoned he flew higher than the birds...
Even after Thorkell broke his arm, he was still standing. Standing there, tall and alive as he kept asking him the same question.
"Do you know what makes a true warrior?"
Is it the valkyries and their offering hand? The promise for Valhalla? Does one need to die with honor or simply have a high body count?
Thorkell admitted on hoping the son of the man stronger than him could answer the conundrum. But the young blonde was only lost.
Lost on how to kill him. Askeladd had promised to find a weak point but so far the giant bastard has yet to stumble and fall.
His daggers are tainted with his blood but no matter the many slices, Thorkell was not admitting defeat. He challenged him to a duel, he sliced his chain mail, got his arm broken and Askeladd is on the verge of bleeding out...
The cheers of the men around him was deafening, too.
As it felt like an eternity to this fight, Thorfinn did not even notice that he wasn't thinking about anything but Askeladd.
Thorkell promised him tales of his father, who he apparently knew, but even thinking about Thors would only make him lose focus.
He couldn't afford to think about his father right now. Not about his mother or sister, Askeladd or you.
He could only listen to the hollers, the wind, Throkell's steps and the words of wisdom leaving Askeladd's mouth...
"Y'know, it almost seemed like Thors did love my niece Helga..."
Thorfinn backed away from a swing of his axe.
"So is love what makes a true warrior? Ah, no...couldn't be it, now could it?"
Thorfinn blocked it all out. Focus on the axes. Cut through the ankles and biceps. Win and you'll be fine.
And so he seemed to be. Blinded briefly by the reflection of Askeladd's blade and hit in the head, Thorkell fell into the snow. With a bellow, Thorfinn casted aside his shock and went for the eye.
He can win this. He'll win Askeladd back and kill him in a duel himself. He'll win, he'll win!
Whatever else may happen after that does not matter.
And so he won.
Enough not to have him and Askeladd be slaughtered by the others and having escaped with a mere scar and broken arm.
Canute descended the hill and with him, a small army of Thorkell's men. To his right were you, riding close by with a frown that could frighten the men. Thorkell watched the prince's bravery and equal foolishness. His lack of fear irritated the viking but he still believed it to be better to become his vassal instead of being his kidnapper.
You got off to tend to Björn, fastened at the sleigh, just like Canute ordered. As Thorkell's band followed the young royal with perplexed faces, Thorfinn tagged along before his eyes widened at the sight of you.
Running up to you, the calmness that overtook him due to his victory ceased and he almost panted like a dog as he finally reached you. One arm in a sling while the other hovered above yours - almost wanting to grab hold of it.
"You alright?" He panted out as his eyes looked you up and down - and so did yours.
The young fella was truly worn out. Even though he was lucky his arm had only been broken, bruises are surely soon to follow. You couldn't see any blood, blood that wasn't his at least, but it was clear that him even being able to stand could be considered a miracle.
The idiot gambled with another round with Thorkell the Tall, after all. It is a miracle he was alive.
"I am." You responded in a whisper, looking away with a frown. Without another word, you followed Canute.
I Know No One's There, I'll Stay, I'll Stay...
Thorfinn trotted after you like a confused child.
While staying close to the prince, the young viking talked to you mundanely as if nothing had happened. The tales that Thorkell told him - who was strolling alongside Askeladd with a tune - and how he knew about his father. About his mother and the many battles Thors had fought, and how he suddenly seemed to give it all up.
He told you how he now seemed to become a vassal for the princess, as if you had not witnessed it. Thorkell the Tall now following orders from soft Canute out of all people. The same man who almost made mincemeat out of the both of you.
Now there he was, strolling along with his eyepatch.
"What's the matter with you?" Thorfinn rose a brow.
You glanced to him. Arm tightly in a sling as if hugging himself, though his bored gaze made it clear that he was anything but concerned for his own safety. He had talked and talked ever since you met up again but not once did he ask you about your experience up the hill.
It was irrelevant to him. As long as you weren't beaten or bruised or killed, any kind of incident did not matter to him.
He did not even ask if you needed to fight for your survival. If you had to kill any previous bandmates - they did not matter though you could understand from where he came from with that logic.
They did not matter.
No one is left anyway. Eradicated either by Thorkell's, Askeladd's or Thorfinn's hand. Whether or not you helped out with getting rid of the vermin did not matter in the end.
None of that...was love, was it?
"Nothing." You curtly responded and focused on guiding the horses.
You cannot believe how much of an errand boy he was playing.
The meeting with the king was intimidating enough - you thought your good intentions to Canute would grand you to be on the good side of the king but he was keen on assanitating his own child. Canute seemed well aware and, with Askeladd by his side now, planning to kill his father himself.
It was intimidating. The meek, fair princess now plotting murder. He was so small to you, a frail bird too scared to fly - now he intended to conquer the sky.
You wished you weren't there. But as Canute introduced you as his guardian, you didn't really have a choice in this matter.
If you are female, well, having you there might do more harm then good. King Sweyn questioning his son's sanity on putting his life in the hands of a woman.
Still, what is done is done, and Thorfinn played along nicely. Both you and Askeladd could see that. The young man was training despite his broken arm, made a self-made sling or what you assumed to be support as he stabbed through the air.
The evening was cold but not refreshing to you. Spending the night in the barn next to the inn, where everyone merrily ate and celebrated the prince's safe return, you strolled along the house as if lost in a forest.
The inn was warm but unwelcome, even if Canute was in there. He ordered food to be prepared for you and Thorfinn but you'd rather wait outside than go in (Again, as a woman going in might be a bad idea).
The door opened and you watched Askeladd carefreely taking a piss on the snow. He grinned at you. "Not going to come in, into the warmth? The food is good."
You declined, saying that food would be prepared for you. The older man clicked his tongue as he shook his head. Pride is going to freeze you to death. Just look at all the men he lost.
"Only you and Thorfinn remain, oh, and Björn, too. What are you going to do after all this, eh, kid? I wouldn't call you loyal to me."
Scoffing, you turned away. Perhaps you did have a plan. Wanting to run away to a far-away place, start your own viking band or stay as Canute's guardian. Or maybe, you were as clueless as Askeladd made you out to be. Wandering like a lost child.
"Are you just gonna keep following Thorfinn like a pup? Or maybe he'll keep on clinging to you after he got his revenge."
You turn to him with a glare. Askeladd truly was an enigma of a man...does he hate you just as much as he hated his other bandmates? Why does he keep having you around when Thorfinn is a much better tool? Even now he does what he says in order to get a duel. And why would Canute, the one who spoke of love to you, recruit a cruel man like Askeladd?
You couldnt find any answers that night. Thorfinn kept on stabbing through the air, only the aroma of food making him stop. He gobbled it all up and you kept on pointing out the scraps of food stuck on his lips. Watching him eat, you absent-mindedly called his name.
"...Why do you keep me around, Thorfinn?"
The blonde let out a confused noise. You took a scrap of meat off his cheek before eating it yourself.
"Why would you ask that?" He kept on stuffing his mouth. Truly, why? He was the one who asked you that question many months before, he was the one confused by your behavior and actions. Yet here you are putting his into question?
"I don't want you to die." Though he kept on eating, his eyes stayed downcast and his voice barely above a whisper. Still, that was enough of an answer to him. It had been before. But you did not seemed satisfied by it.
"It's just strange." You mumbled and inhaled sharply to gather your words, "Thorfinn, do you-"
You halt, then hesitated. There was furstration in your eyes that even he could make out.
Was his wish for your survival his gracing of love?
Then why did he not love when surrounded by the sea, by land, animals and food?
Why did you gift love to the one companion to when he aims to murder out of honor?
Sighing, you sat back and leaned against his shoulder. Swallowing the last crumbles, Thorfinn wrapped you in a blanket as best as he could with one arm.
"Take this. It gets freezing cold here at night."
"...Why is my friend such a fool?"
You whispered and Thorfinn let out an offended 'huh'? He flicked your cheek before making himself comfortable. "You're acting so strange."

Major powers of the Andromeda Galaxy, Part 1: The Xana Arm Federation
This post is a brief overview of the species of the Xana Arm Federation.
The Xana Arm of Andromeda is home to 6 major sapient species, whose planets have formed the Xana Arm Federation. These species are Parallans, Celestans, Lolai, Valians, Valikin, and Tsanans. The Xana Arm confederation was established in 2018 CE. Membership in the HAF is fully voluntary, on a per-system basis. As of January 2023 CE, there are 6,442 member systems.
Interstellar trade is done through Xana Credits, which are almost always handled electronically, but "coins" in the form of small cylinders, colored to show their value, exist for small transactions.
Tsanans (tsawhe)
Tsanans are a humanoid race, native to the moon K'aazipelh of the planet Tsana in the Caset system. K'aazipelh is a superhabitable moon, being slightly larger than Earth with shallow oceans and a denser atmosphere. Tsanans were the first species in Andromeda to invent FTL travel via Subspace, nearly 5 million years ago. They explored inward along the Xana Arm during this time, controlling much of the core of the galaxy, including the galactic bar and the roots of both the Xana Arm and the Mehiti Arm. Tsanans even crossed the intergalactic void, having a small presence in the Milky Way. They studied humans as they evolved and their societies formed as well, interfering as little as possible. In 100 CE, however, Tsanans had to abandon the Milky Way due to a war with the Glian Mycelium, leaving little behind in the Sol system, however some planetary bases and orbiting ships were left behind in many other systems. The area around where the Tsanans built their first Intergalactic gateway, now known as the Galactic Backwaters, has a lot of abandoned Tsanan ships and bases scattered through it.
Having come to almost universally appreciate the stories that humans created for teaching about how mythology develops in society (information lost to them millennia before), many Tsanan families today continue to name their children after human gods and mythological figures. Tsanans have also mastered genetic manipulation, many having traits from animals like cat ears, bat wings, or bear claws. These traits are often shared within families, as a sign of their togetherness, and it is a big deal when Tsanans get their first gene edit, typically around age 15.
Parallans (palanal / ashal palanu)
Parallans are also humanoid, almost indistinguishable from Tsanans (sans gene mods) and humans. They are, however, taller than both on average, with some even reaching 7'10". Parallans are native to the planet Parallax (pala), in the Yakuin system. It has a worldwide archipelago, with the largest islands being approximately the size of Australia. The foliage of Parallax is violet rather than green, taking a rare approach for photosynthesis by absorbing only the peak wavelengths of light from Yakuin.
Parallan culture focuses on equality and learning in all stages of life. They have public scientific institutes, which (pending approval) any citizen of the Parallan Federation can use for independent research. The Parallan Federation also has many universities, at least one in every Parallan settlement.
Celestans (Selasyk)
Celestans are the only other sapient humanoid species native to Andromeda. They are native to the planet Celesta (Seleste) in the Yakuin system. Celesta and Parallax are neighbors in the Yakuin system, with Celesta being a bit farther from Yakuin. Celesta is covered almost entirely by a large forest, with many lakes and rivers dotted within. However, there is one large, almost star-shaped sea in the northern hemisphere.
Unlike their neighbors, Celestans are quite anatomically different from humans. They have larger, pointed ears, and some even have horns growing from their heads. Their biology is also changed by their planet, which has a lot of Ninai deposits. Ninai is a mineral only found in Andromeda which interacts with Vipris, a type of exotic matter which does not usually interact with normal matter. Celestans have Ninai in their blood and nervous systems, which allows them to manipulate Vipris to create magic-like effects. No species on any other planet has this adaptation naturally, but there are a few ways for other species to gain it, which is common among Parallans.
Lolai (Lolai)
Lolai are a group of many species native to Celesta that have been uplifted by proximity to the Ninai crystals in Celesta's crust. There are many species that this has happened to, but not all members of those species are affected. It is passed down from generation to generation, but both Lolai and Celestans have insisted on conserving the populations of their non-uplifted cousins.
Lolai and Celestans both have a connection to the wildlife of Celesta. The mycelium of Celestan fungi form a planet-wide network which allows communication among much of the planet's plant-life, which Celestans and Lolai have found ways to use as well. It acts as a sort of long-range telepathy, but it only works on Celesta, and doesn't have any mind-controlling properties like Glian Mycelium does.
Valians and Valikin (valinal / valinal yu)
Valians and Valikin are native to the rings of the planet Vali I in the Vali system. They are reptile-like species, who both biomineralize metals and ores as scales to protect from radiation. Valians are large and draconic, with large wing-like appendages which allow them to maneuver within the gasses in the rings of Vali I. Valikin are smaller, around human-size, and lack wings. They instead jump between the rocks that make up the ring, or rarely they are allowed to ride along on the backs of Valians.
Both Valians and Valikin are mute, despite the gas being thick enough for them to breathe properly and for other species to talk. Instead, they communicate through a few different systems. Close up or intimately, they both use a system which consists of holding hands or feet and vibrating and pulsing special muscles in their palms/soles. For communicating at a distance, Valikin use a combination of dance and sign language, and Valians use a kind of semaphore with their wings. That said, many of both species have learned Parallan Sign Language as well, in order to communicate with other species, and some have learned to understand spoken language, though this is more difficult for them.

No, I Don't Want It, I Don't Want It, I Don't Want It...
No more was this a viking band - the majority has been killed by their own leader.
This was now the newest vessel of the youngest prince of Denmark. Leading of what remained of the men with Askeladd being his right-hand man.
Sailing along with all the tricks in the book that he had, all of which he had learned in his life felt like it was meant for a moment like this, for a future king like Canute.
And you had no choice but to go along with it if you wanted to keep on living.
Askeladd seemed more alive than ever. Youthful even as he grinned and spoke and chatted with Thorkell and Canute as if he had been waiting all his life for an opportunity like this. You and Thorfinn had never seen him this upbeat before, unless he was with Björn.
The man in question was still on a mat, resting though.
So in his usual fashion, the older man confidently stood on the boat with his typical shit-eating grin while crossing his arms. He spoke with carefreeness to the prince as they neared a dock in York. Left and right a crowd congegrated at the incoming ship, whispering among themselves on the return of prince Canute.
Yet as loud as their curioustiy was, deadly silent was the arrow that pierced the vulnerable chest almost precisely.
A thud ensued and a scream from your direction caused a commotion from the docks. The ship hurried to land and brought the wounded royal quickly to aid. While few ran over to him, another hurried away from the scene.
Clothes were ripped apart as someone abruptly stopped from taking out the arrow. The weapon was deep but what truly caused many to gasp and back away, was Canute himself approaching the dying woman.
You watched with a glare of anger (or perhaps pity? Indifference? Shock? Disgust?) as Askeladd casually trailed after Canute while letting out the obvious elephant in the room that someone apparently wanted him killed.
The leader made sure to purchase a slave with a form and stature similiar to the prince to act as bait. He ordered you to cause a commotion on land to have the culprit panic and escape from the scene - and then have Thorfinn silently get rid off him. To show the assasins that Askeladd is well aware of their presence and capable of taking them all out.
He has his tools for it, after all.
"Play the dumb but genuine witness," He grinned as he pointed at you before shooing you and Thorfinn out of his sight. Do your part and you'd all safely arrive at York. For now.
The perpetrator was cut down and the commotion that was supposed to bring the attention on the dying woman unfortunately was also brought to Thorfinn.
Still with his arm in a sling, he found himself surrounded by a few guards who also shadowed the culprit but put the blame on the young blonde instead. You hurried to him but even so, your own acting wasn't really able to save him.
"As if!" One pointed out, "You're just a kid, just like him! Obviously you two are in this together so you are trying to save his skin!"
"I told you, it wasn't me. It was him, he had the corssbow in hand."
Still, the guards were not relenting, drawing their swords at the two of you. Behind them was a much smaller man who called out, though his voice was way too meek compared to the spitting insults of the guards.
One insult too many and one step too close to you, and Thorfinn took one out with a single biff. As intimidating as the men seemed, they quickly turned tail and ran off at the sight of his two daggers.
"Thorfinn Karlsefni!"
The young lad who took Thorkell down with just two knifes - gossip turned real at the sight of the beaten blonde.
The scene clearing out so fast left you a bit relieved - perhaps speechless even. Would tension like this cease so quickly in the future too, whenever the name 'Karlsefni' was uttered?
Still, one stayed - the little man in the corner you had noticed. His green tunic was well kept for someone his age, short with half of his light hair already gone on his head. With his moustache spikey but kept short as well as his shining but wide eyes, you doubted this old geezer could pose as a threat.
"...Thorfinn...?" He muttered in a horse voice, "Thorfinn...Son of Thors? Are you the son of Thors?" With each word, he gingerly approached. You watched as Thorfinn merely rose a brow before his own eyes widened.
"...Uncle Leif?"
You watched with bated breath.
The hand on your weapon had long ceased shaking and resting upon it yet still; It was balled into a fist at your side.
Your eyes darted between the two men and their exchange of the past. With your back to the wall behind you and Thorfinn resting on the edge of the dock as this 'Leif' never seemed to stop talking about Thors.
About Iceland.
About family. An 'Helga' and an 'Ylva'.
"That does not concern me." Thorfinn uttered as he got up and adjusted his arm sling, "I am asking you about Vinland. Father wanted to go there and I want to know if you did anything about it."
"But Thorfinn," Leif stepped closer, his arms open as his eyes threatened to tear up again, "You don't need to be here. You want your revenge but what about your mother? She's been getting worse and worse ever since you got taken from us. Ylva has been worried sick as well, you could go back and see them. I'm sure Helga will feel better-!"
"I said that doesn't concern me!"
Swiftly the blonde spun back with dagger in his good hand. His face had quickly contorted into sheer rage once again. "I'm here to take my revenge! Nothing else!"
Seeming to lose air, Leif sobbed as his voice shook. "It's been enough! We've lost you since you were six, Thorfinn, six! You have been in this hell long enough, we can go back home! Go back to Iceland!"
You could feel it. Feel the familiar ire ooze out of Thorfinn. A hatred unrivaled and unequalled in a way you have never seen nor felt in your young years.
"Enough?" His tone was akin to a growl, like a switch.
"It will never be enough! Have you not seen it, how Father died?! As long as this damn bastard is eating, breathing and shitting, it'll never be enough! You hear me?!"
He tried to take a deep breath and in the next moment, grasped your hand and marched back to the boat with you in tow. His grip was tight enough to hurt you. Yet that was the least of your concerns.
Looking back, you could see the man tear up.
"I'll stay...I'll stay right here until you change your mind!"
Never have you heard of such absurdity before.
"I won't give you up, Thorfinn!"
A man from the past - a mere, old, harmless merchant - insisting on bringing someone back home, someone like Thorfinn. To have looked and searched for him. Embracing him tight like a son and weeping at the sight of him. Alive and safe.
"Let's go back home! Please!"
Such bravery, such determination for someone like Thorfinn. That is love, is it not?
You'd certainly feel loved if someone like that was searching for you.
"Let's go back to Iceland!"
I Don't Want It But I Know No One's There...
The day is quick to be over and morning approaches yet again.
Today at noon is the meeting with the king and all his investors and allies. Askeladd insisted on being there as well but you couldn't care enough about the details of high and mighty masteries.
About spying, about rumors, about hired assassins and slaves only to get rid of them...
You would love to say that Thorfinn shares your sentiment and he does but still approves on playing a puppet while you stay rigid and firm on the stage. Not moving.
You simply had watched. Watched as bands fought over a prince, watched as he tamed them like beasts, watched along as the band was reduced to mere three people that serve a royal now. Watched as Thorfinn continued to play along and along and along...
He was as focused as ever today. Today he insisted on getting his duel and revenge.
You sat still and watched. Perhaps a part of you adjusted his arm sling yet again. Out of kindness, out of pity, out of fear, anger, exhaustion...
You just didn't want him to die.
Gods, would it be awful. Would it be foolish if he were to die now.
Though it was noon, the sky was dark. Clouds forebode a storm or blizzard and Askeladd complained about the awful timing. How it had to be so close to the meeting...that two stubborn idiots insisted on dueling him now.
You went up the hill, next to Canute and Thorkell. Both of them said nothing as you invited yourself to their company.
Thorkell, who almost crushed you. Your shorter, younger body that of an insect compared to him, as well as in his eyes.
Canute, who was too bashful to glance at you. Someone who grieved and cried while clinging on your sleeve now seemed like a different, stronger person than you.
And the second dour fool...Björn crawled up the snowy path with nothing but a sword and his wound. He needed to go first and Thorfinn seemed to grant him that wish, watching from the sidelines.
Though the duel was quickly over. So fast and one-sided that it could barely be called a match, let alone a battle. Even as Askeladd held a sliver of shine and love in his eyes as Björn died in his arms, as he confessed his wish and reciprocated it with his own...as he gave him the final but merciful blow to send him to Valhalla...none could find it in their hearts to really feel anything for the old man anymore.
"...Awfully sorry to have kept you waiting, lad." He threw the blood off his sword with a clean swing after he covered the body.
While walking over to Thorfinn almost like in a trance, your eyes never left the snow sullied in blood nor the body growing ever so cold or the sword in Askeladd's hand.
"I shall be witness to this duel and as the prince here, I shall also be the one to decide when it ends." Canute spoke in a loud tone, it was hard to believe he only used to mumble. You didn't look back but felt thankful that he went out of his way to ensure Thorfinn's safety.
Even if that meant not satisfying him and his lust for vengeance.
And here you were in front of Thorfinn, yet again tugging and adjusting his arm sling - which he had also wrapped his dagger around, refusing to have it any other way while dueling the older man - to make sure it stayed put and firm. Firm enough to not have the weapon fall out of its grip and to not have the stubborn fool injure his arm more than needed.
He watched silently, his glare the moment he laid eyes on Askeladd today not yielding. Not softening at the sight of you as they ususally do.
Wordlessly you tug and tie and press the dagger deeper into the grip. Though your work is done, and even needless to an extent, your cold hands stayed on the sling. Cold, bare hands red from the chilling winter day. Hands that have seen and caused chaos gingerly carressed the sling and bandages alongside the blade. Your eyes never left it and neither did Thorfinn's.
No one commented a thing. All waited patiently for both men to begin.
Slowly, ever so slowly and reluctantly, your hands glided down his sling and swung back to your sides. Finally, you looked back at him and stared into his hardened eyes with your softened ones.
"...Don't die. Please..." Was all you could muster after an enduring silence. Thorfinn only left you there as he went up to Askeladd.
The sword is thrown into the snow.
Daggers in both hands, one broken.
Still, as he stood there, ready and unarmed with his neck so delicate and vulnerable, Thorfinn got pummeled nicely; One fist after another as he was headbutted, kicked, uppercutted, held by his hair and biffed until his face was red, blue and black. It was hard to watch.
Thorkell and Canute chatted about bets and strength. The giant of a man teasing you even for probably being the type to bet it all on your loyal friend and buddy Thorfinn even as he is getting the daylights beaten out of him. You refused to talk to him.
You never uttered a word during the duel nor to the other two, yet Canute could easily tell how tense you were with each punch Askeladd threw at Thorfinn. You were just watching with bated breath and a racing heart.
Even though this one-sided brawl was easily, so, so easily in Askeladd's favor, the leader grew more and more frustrated with each swing.
A fool. An idiot. Stubborn and small-minded, braying like a blind animal and lashing out in the most childish way he has ever seen. A real warrior.
How he wished he'd just get into his thick skull, use a bit of his brain! Just a damn bit for once, that complete moron!
Yet as he kicked him for one last time, having the young man fall head-first into the snow, knocked out cold, he rose his sword over his head, only to quickly raise his other arm the moment he heard stomping through the snow.
Canute had called out to you as you rushed towards the man with your own blade - cutting into his hand as he stopped the weapon from piercing through his chest.
Your glare was as dark as thunder and so akin to Thorfinn's. It made him laugh and just as frustrated.
"Calm down now. I didn't even harm a hair on his head." Askeladd gestured to tip of his sword dug into the snow, right next to Thorfinn's head. Swiftly, the man grabbed your own blade, pushing you away with a shove and shaking the blood off his palm. He eyed you with a matching scowl. "Don't get worked up over an fool like him. He'd just cause you trouble."
You paid no attention to his words. Throwing your weapon aside, you were fast as a storm, kneeling by Thorfinn's side and turning him around, holding him in your arms.
"Thorfinn! Thorfinn!" As you attempted to waken him, Canute followed close behind you, yelling out that the duel was over. Askeladd did not reply but instead, took a seat on a few bricks of an abandonded bridge. With a scoff he watched the young blonde regain conciousness but even as he awoke in your arms, the simpleton just jumped to his feet despite his injuries and whipped his head around in search for his prey.
Even as Canute explained the outcome and even as your hands and arms supported him like a mother, as Thorfinn looked dumbfounded at your hurt gaze at the sight of his blue, bloodied and pummeled face...he was still looking for Askeladd.
His blue eyes watched as you tried to wipe the blood off his nose, at the mere graze of your touch had the young viking jump in pain. It must hurt so much to see him make a fool of himself time and time again. Nevertheless, he keeps on crawling back to Askeladd and it sickened him.
For the first time in a long while, Askeladd called out your name in a calm and placid manner.
"Don't waste your enegry on an moron like him. He keeps on getting these injuries because of his own stupidity...you're better off without him."
At that Thorfinn let out an offended groan - Askeladd gestured to his outburst with an unimpressed sneer. "As I said. The idiot brays, then takes out his weapons and thinks himself the hunter as he charges head on while going for my neck. He thinks he's already won...by just roaring out a little victory chant and throwing himself into battle, just like all these self-proclaimed warriors do. They've all lost sight of the nice things in battling."
"Björn was right...I hate all warriors like that. Bastards that take, rampage, pillage, kill and then rob an entire culture of all that they had. Especially those Nordics...those vikings." Taking a deep breath, he called out calmly once again. "Laddie. Let me tell you...how to really murder an abhorrent bastard."
Don't Let Me Go, I Have Nothing Left To Lose...
His eyes never left him. Nor you.
The tale was as old as time for him, funny even in a way. A past that shaped him and all his actions he has done and will ever do but simply reciting it all brought a few chuckles out of him from the memories. The treatment. His mother and her belief of an returning king. The never-ending mountains of ash. The fools of half-brothers he used to have. All the wealth from the murder. The soft 'Why?' as his father met his end.
He didn't even think he'd remember that much!
But it all did happen...he remembered the respect he earned and how he dug her grave in Wales. It is all still there, he hoped.
The kid knew how to kill him now...he wondered if he would actually suceed after hearing his advice.
"So you know now, Thorfinn if you listened to me of course. I've managed to kill my most hated enemy within two years and still here I stand about ten later. Use your wits for next time, you damn numbskull." The man had long stood up and marched over to Björn's cold body. He threw one brief glance over his shoulder to Thorfinn - who was simply fuming in his own blood.
"Shut it!" He got up as briskly as he could from your arms, "Shut up, bastard! I'll, I'll kill you! Until my final breath, I'll rip out your heart! I will definitely-!"
Another clang. The sword hit the snow, it's tip dug deep within the earth. With more fiersome intent than him feigning the final blow on Thorfinn. If you were not mistaken, you reckoned to hear the metal crack.
"Damn it all. You're really pissin' me off."
In an attempt to control his anger, Askeladd balled his shaking hand as he scowled like a wounded beast at Thorfinn. The latter was startled, you noted.
"...You talk about killing and killing and killing. Yet you haven't achieved a single thing. Look at you, lad. You're covered in blood, snot and saliva, it's disgusting. You had so many, so many chances to kill and gut me yet you never used your damn brain for any of them! Look at you!"
With a sudden shout he pointed at him. You and Canute could not help but jump in fright. "You're quick, you're strong, you're talented! I can't deny that...and still you insist on going off on your emotions and losing each little duel you so wholeheartedly persist on! Keeping on losing your cool and brainlessly charging forward. You had so many chances, Thorfinn, and you had equally as much chances to get killed for your brainless behaviour if it weren't for them!" His digit went to point at you. Your breath got caught in your throat.
"If it weren't for the only damn friend you got in this messed up world, you'd be long dead! You owe them more than I owe you! And still...they're gonna end up being the death of you, too."
With a sharp gasp, Thorfinn once again swung his dagger at him. However, he struggled to catch his breath. "Don't bring them into this! This, this is between you and me! It always has been!"
"Don't be laughable, boy!" Askeladd bellowed at him, "It always has been until they arrived! Little dog that you are, you clung onto their hip since then and today as well! Your little attachment will get you killed, fool!"
Oh, how long Askeladd had waited to say that straight to his face! Thorfinn's attachment to you will end up killing him! And what good does that bring when a corpse can't avenge his father?
You watch with a darting, wide gaze between the men. Thorfinn kept denying it, throwing his tantrum with the same threats as before - the same threats he has been spitting his way since he was six years old - only for Askeladd to point out every. Single. Thing. He has ever done for you, sacrificed for you and only you. For your survival. For your honor. Everything. He can't fool him, boy.
"It all started with your absurd, small 'trades'. Yes, I've seen it as you threw them that bunny as amends. I've noticed you bringing in the horses, fix your gear together, having each other's back on the battlefield as you barely even acknowledged our existence. You think I haven't been paying attenton aside from our duels?"
He saw it in the early dawn of spring when you hunt and Thorfinn shared his prey with you. He witnessed it in the deadly cold night of winter when you are huddled and cuddled close together. He saw it when Thorfinn's dear dagger is in your hands as if it was nothing and the lad doesn't see anything wrong with it. Damn it, he sees it in his smile! He smiles when near you, at you and is brought only by you!
Boy, you are laughable!
"And when I told you to go fetch His Highness from Thorkell's men in an exchange for a chance to kill me, you just had to turn around and save their skin. You are as predictable as I thought, Thorfinn." Askeladd couldn't help but snicker, "I've given you so many chances and you all threw them away the moment your little friend just seemed to be in danger. You can't even focus on your goal, idiot, you kept on prioritizing a life that won't help you achieve it. Maybe if they'd never joined, you would have long gotten your revenge."
Askeladd calmed down enough to grin and jest, "But no," He feigned disappointment and shook his head, "You still refuse to have a bit of your wits about you. When I threaten your friend's life, you throw yourself in front of them. When I tell you to fight Thorkell the Tall, you do so only to be the one to chop off my head. And now...you are here. And so am I. Really, you've helped me along the way, Thorfinn...you've been an useful tool."
The young viking stepped back with a choked breath and a gut-wreching hole in his stomach that seemed to take his heavy heart.
"You're like a dog chasing after food. I should be thankful to Thors."
Everything seemed grow hazy around. The cold, the figures talking away, the ground underneath him. The air seemed more piercing with every breath he so depserately struggled to fill his lungs with, fill it to live but that seemed like a task too great for him. Pain shot through his broken arm and his legs gave out as the snow softened his fall. Everything dislimned before him as if all this never happened at all.
You caught him before he could fall into the snow and suffocate. His body freezing and heavy against you. The second dagger slipped out of his hand.

Anyone, Everyone I will Crush Them All...
Thorfinn felt even better in the morning. You were being so considerate to him after last night, at least in a way to not make it obvious to the other bandmates.
But Askeladd wasnt like the others...man got a brain inside that skull.
You stuck by Thorfinn, often glimpsed at him to check on his well-being, talked when something was directed at the both of you.
And if that change wasn't obvious enough, then sharing the same camp, food and pain certainly was. It was interesting to watch this flower bloom.
Anything that touched ones heart can be a drive and a weakness at the same time.
It was only a matter of time. The prince was within arm's reach, just behind the smoke of the wildfire and Thorkell's army.
Thorfinn is truly perfect. Stubborn and foolish, he follows every command as long as he can duel Askeladd in return. Without any hesitation, he buckles up on his horse, lets himself be soaked in water and storm blindly into the enemie's territory all alone. What a perfect tool.
And what a sweet, sweet and perfect opportunity this is.
Askeladd stands on a higher point at the outskirts to 'get a better look at things', he claims. The man stands behind you, tall with his hands on his hips as he watches Thorfinn, with the latter glaring at him in return.
Good.
One hand slides down to the hilt of his sword before raising it. Tilting it to the side, he aimed for your neck.
Thorfinn's eyes widened while you stayed ignorant of what's to come.
The horse brayed in pain as the blonde almost snapped the rein back, pulling towards him and steering it back. Watching Thorfinn's face twist into one of rage, you turned around to see Askeladd's blade coming down for your neck.
With a scream, you stumble as you are yanked back and Askeladd withdrew his sword before the young man could harm him. Thorfinn lets go of your collar as he stands between you and the man.
"What the hell is the meaning of this?!"
More questions are thrown but Askeladd stays unnervingly calm. He clicks his tongue and waves his finger down to the massacre below. Thorfinn should better hurry up.
Seething with his nosetrills flared up and teeth gritted, he snapped his eyes between him and the battle, back to back. Unintelligable grunts leave him and he grabbed your arm (or a fistful of your collar) and hoisted you up with him on his horse - desperately quickly, rough and without explanation.
Your weapon almost slipped out of your hand, feeling too distraught to really focus and the many battle cries around you didn't help.
In fact, you were no help at all. Thorfinn trampled down men that stood in his way and dragged you off it with him as he stood defensively in front of the prince and his soldiers. One hand tilted his dagger upward so he wouldn't scrape you as he once again yanked you behind him.
He is not going to leave you alone with...that senile, old bastard!
What the hell even was that?!
Trying to kill your own bandmate - no, you weren't part of these brutes, you were just following orders for your own benefit but never did you do anything that deserves to have your head chopped off! What was that supposed to be?! How is this of any help?!
He may have hauled you right into the battlefield, in the eye of the storm, in the smoke where out of all people, Thorkell is waiting...but you are safer here.
You are safer with him.
Thank goodness that for whatever reason Thorkell the Tall did not want to fight. His reasonings made no sense nor did you want to understand a monster like him as long as you did not need to battle him...you couldnt deny your relieve despite the stressful ordeal.
The prince seemed unharmed but Thorfinn couldn't care less. He was half-heartedly listening to the retainer and Askeladd (while biting bis tongue on what the hell he did right before the battle) as he kept on glancing to you - until the glances turned to straight up holding onto your shoulders as you were the one harmed. It may have happened due to Askeladd's trick or during the battle or maybe even Thorfinn himself inadvertently hurt you. It's hard to tell after the storm passed but your injury remained.
Thorfinn WILL say something. He would have no qualms about interrupting Askeladd's deal of protecting the prince right then and there or he might say something after that first. Maybe the both of you are on the boat at the back - like you usually are - but instead of talking or joking, you're clinging to your side. It isn't fatal but the fact that it happened through such circumstances is what's getting to the blonde.
"ASKELADD!!!" A ear-piercing scream made the prince and his soldiers jump while said person barely turned around. You're sitting, laying, enduring the pain at the back of the boat as Thorfinn was hunched by your side with his hands balled into fists, teeth gritting. The older man hasn't seen him so angry in years.
"What was the point of that?!" Thorfinn would yell out while Askeladd wouldn't even reply. A mere shoulder shrug or, if he feels like it, an excuse of 'You saw that wrong' or 'My hand slipped' would be all he'd get.
This would anger him more.
No, it's just not 'anger'. The pounding fear he felt when you were just about to be beheaded rooted itself in his heart and irrational fury was born from it. The blonde is confused and scared. Nothing that the leader did made any sense and...he was endangering you. The only thing clear in his mind is that this bastard tried to kill you!
Askeladd tried to kill you! The murderer of his father tried to kill you!
There was no turning back now. Even as empty-headed as the other men are, they notice the harsh shift in the boy's behavior and attempt to calm him down - some are at least, the other (still very oblivious) ones keep asking what the hell the kid's so getting worked up for. You're still alive and it isn't fatal. Give the wound a few days rest and it'll turn into a nice scar.
It's even more troublesome when the band doesn't even know why he's so upset. Due to the smoke and their high trust in Askeladd's leadership, none would think he would ever attempt to kill one of his bandmates (hee hee, if only they knew).
'C'mon, lad, don't be like that', 'You're making a ruckus, we just got the prince', they'd say and if any of them dared to approach with open palms, Thorfinn would be quick to draw out his dagger and throw it at the closest one.
"Don't you dare go near them!"
The men grow uneasy but decide to let you two be. Askeladd hides his little smirk while the prince is wondering what he got into and if it was really worth it.
Thorfinn is too distraught, too furious and too emotional to notice his care for you but his actions made it crystal-clear to everyone. None of the danish soldiers thought that vikings would care so much for each other, especially such young ones.
Not like he can afford to ponder about that now. You're hurt and he needs to patch you up somehow - which he does, poorly so as it is evident from his own scarred body. He isn't quite good at taking care of himself, let alone someone else (he realizes he needs to learn it).
Would let none and I mean, none go near you to tend to you. Thorfinn is just decent at taking care of wounds, only enough to not die from them. Even if it were someone as honest as Björn or a danish doctor on board with the prince, he wouldn't let them. Not after that stunt from Askeladd. Thorfinn's distrust blossomed anew.
No. He will take care of you himself.
During the trip the blonde is hostile if he has to interact with anyone. His entire attention is on you even after he patched up, even if you told him you're fine.
Thorfinn can try as he may but if he were to deny his overprotectiveness of you, no one would believe him. Though, he is being too irrational at the moment that no one wants to talk to him anyway, including you.
If you are distraught yourself, the both of you are quiet but close with Thorfinn keeping his eye on you. He'd do the same if you were angry yourself.
If there is just a hint of sadness or even a tear leaking from your eye (but not falling. You swiftly wipe it off, you can't afford to cry here among vikings. Either it's only going to make you feel worse or you will lose all respect and reputation of the band), Thorfinn would absolutely be pissed. He isn't even thinking of shushing you for crying but instead his anger at Askeladd would only grow. It can't be described.
The son of Thors can't think straight. Everything was going fine until for some reason Askeladd, that bastard, that murderer, was...thinking of beheading you. Why? Why? What was the point of that?
It makes no sense. What's the point in killing someone like you? And the man just looked at him, leered at him with that damned smirk, toying with him, toying with you and now is just sitting there, having captured the prince and...!
He keeps on getting away with this.
First his father...now you.
No. No, he won't.
Thorfinn doesn't realize it. He won't ever admit it to himself because he isn't aware of it, but he doesn't want you to die. Thorfinn didn't want you to die.
Just the thought of it...which he would repress whenever he could, is just...awful. Imagining your body dismembered on the battlefield like the thousands of men he killed is an awful thought to have. That's all he knows.
The young man is hostile through and through. All of this happened in the span of a few hours and he is just expected to be over it?! To turn a blind eye because 'it didn't happen the way he thought' and that your injury isn't 'that bad. You probably were just careless'.
Oh, no. Fuck that.
The mercaneries were able to shake of Thorkell's army long enough to rest for a bit. Night came but that didn't mean they couldn't take their chances when it came to a monster like that. Let the prince rest and calm down and then keep on marching.
With you in tow Thorfinn made sure to stay far, far, far away from the other men, even preferring to sleep deep within a forest, as long as Askeladd can't spy on him with his ugly mug. He is too pissed off to really care about the other dangers lurking around.
Even if you started to feel better after the few hours, for the very first time, Thorfinn will insist on doing everything. He is going to get food, he is going to set up a fire, he is going to keep watch and you are going to rest.
Don't get it wrong though, he isn't saying it in a nice way. While he won't yell or grab you, he is going to sternly order you to stay right there and sleep. Don't even think of being of any help, the way that you are now, you won't be any, anyhow.
He's definitely going to literally look down at you and point his finger at you while saying this.
So, he does as he claimed. Food, warmth and protection are all brought and done by him as he sits close to you.
You're the only one wrapped up in a blanket as Thorfinn keeps watch and cleans his dagger.
You lay down, watching the fire crackle. Thorfinn is quiet.
If you are angry and aggravated yourself, it's best if you don't say anything or else you're going to sour Throfinn's mood more than it already is. In fact, it's better if the both of you stay quiet to digest the whole situation.
If you cry, again, do so silently. Thorfinn won't and can't make an attempt to comfort you. He doesn't know how to on one hand, but also refuses to try for he is too proud and angry to do anything.
However, that doesn't mean he won't notice or won't feel anything over your feelings right now. Having felt death almost brush you, no matter if it came from friend or foe must...feel awful. Your silent tears would let the anger inside him grow but also leave him with his heart falling to his stomach.
Nevertheless, you try to sleep. Laying on your good side, you fluttered your eyes closed, trying to ignore the cold. Though, you really couldn't complain right now. Your stomach is full, the fire was warm enough and you could rest without having to worry...
You glance back up to Thorfinn who was still cleaning his dagger. He seemed calmer than a few hours ago though you could tell that the anger was still bubbling inside of him...just not as strong.
"...Thank you, Thorfinn..." You mumble quietly and if he wasn't wrong, the blonde reckoned he heard a bit of an painful crack in your voice. He stops and looks at you.
Thinking back to the battlefield an slight cold shiver that ran down your back from the sensation of Askeladd's blade. Your face grimaced. Realization hit you that night.
"...You saved me..."
Thorfinn's eyes would widen as well.
It's true...he hadn't really thought what he was doing when charging back. Ignoring the mission.
The young man pouts slightly and doesn't know what to say, especially if you're looking at him with such big eyes. He'd look around as if he's searching for something even if he had no reason to. He simply doesnt want to look at you right now after you said that...
With a small wave of his hand, he brushes the comment, no, the statement off.
"Sleep while you still can. We'll be off before sunrise." He softly let out without sparing you a glance. You can add anything you like but Thorfinn would keep pestering you to rest so you better stop before you start annoying him.
Having no other choice you fall asleep. Thorfinn only looks back at you once he knows you're asleep and can't sense him staring at you. Something akin to a small frown on his face.
He lets a hand hover over your head, he doesn't know why. Once he cant find any proper reason, he lets it rest on the ground. Few men are noisy enough to even reach the deep woods but the blonde doesn't seem to hear them as he's staring at you.
Just as he promised, he kept watch until you all had to go.
The day went on unexpectantly alright.
You and Thorfinn would be at the end of the row, riding on horses the prince still had at his disposal. Only two were left, the other ones didn't survive Thorkell's men. So to test their remaining strength if they could pull the wagon of his highness, and with you two being the youngest and lightest ones of the mercenaries, you were deemed test subjects for the horses. (I just need you two to ride horses...)
You ride in silence, the band marching in front and behind you...but you can't help but glance at Throfinn again and again through the march. Ever since the battle, there has been something eating away at your mind and its bothering you.
Leaning closer to the blonde, you finally ask why he did all of these things. Why he'd go out of his way to do all of this for you...saving you, patching you up, protecting you, feeding you, looking out for you, sticking by you...it was all so much in such a short amount of time. You were helpless and Thorfinn acted like it was his duty to take care of you.
You just needed something. Anything as an answer.
He glanced back at you before quickly staring at the road. "What, did you want to die?" He would let out and nothing more.
You ask again, explaining yourself. It isn't like you don't believe he wouldn't do this for you or - or that you weren't willing to do this for him! It...happened so fast and perhaps you were scared but you've never seen Thorfinn this dedicated to anything else but his revenge before...
He frowns for a bit and stays quiet. He's contemplating on his own, on one hand pondering how to express his feelings and on the other, not really knowing what he feels in the first place.
"I don't want you to die." He kept on staring ahead as he let out in a whisper. Still, he said it like it was a fact.
Your eyes widen and you lean back to properly sit on your horse. Never did you think Thorfinn actively wanted you to die but you never thought you'd...hear him say that either.
Of course. You supposed things made sense now.
"...I don't want to die either." You admitted, feeling a bit low. Obviously, you didn't want to die.
You lean back to the blonde but not as much as before. Your eyes held sincerity even as you sounded a bit blue. "...And I don't want you to die either, Thorfinn".
Finally, he straight up turned to you. There was an unreadable expression on his face even as his brown eyes seemed wider than usual. For a moment something on his visage shifted and he swiftly turned his head away again.
With a low, quiet, seemingly inaudible chuckle, he scoffed; "You're strange".
You almost couldn't believe it as you leaned closer. Was there the slightest and smallest of smiles on Thorfinn's face?
A chuckle of your own escaped you. "You're strange!" Teasingly and with small laughter you let out.
Turning back to you, you were right. This was the first time you saw a genuine smile on his face even if it was faint.
And for him it was the second time he saw this glint in your eyes and warm grin on your face. The first time was when you talked about Vinland.
Aftermath thingies:
A few quick reminders before yall are gonna have to deal with the prince:
Ever since that night where he finally realized that he saved you, Thorfinn has been acting unusually soft with you.
He saved you out of his own will. Not because it will mean he'll get a favor or a duel with Askeladd, it simply meant that he didn't want you to die. There wasn't a single thought running through his head as he attacked the man who tried to harm you (at best. At worst he wanted you dead which is something Thorfinn wholeheartedly believes) even as he was being possessed by his rage. He wasn't thinking when he dragged you with him to the prince, to Thorkell nor did he plan anything through when attempting to patch you up.
He just followed his gut. What he felt.
He caved easily to the rage he felt towards Askeladd and any of the men that did not believe him or dared to mock you both for it. He gave into the belief that right now, injured like that, you were weak and an easy target so he'll take care of things for now. He let the fear muffle his senses when he saw the sword only this close to your neck.
Thorfinn doesn't know if he cares for you. And if he did, then he wouldn't be aware of it. He just doesn't want you to die.
A man as young as him is easily swayed by his emotions.
Was returning his dagger all it took for it to spiral it this way? First a few compromises that turned to favors and now selfless behavior for the other? Was it the slightest speck of respect for his late father, not for his physical prowess but his strength as a person, which he hadn't gotten in years? Was Thorfinn battling the loneliness so hard and desperately that all it took was a soft glint of your eyes and a warm smile when talking about hopes and dreams for him to seek you out?
The image of you dying on the battlefield, butchered and beaten... of the man called 'leader' betray you so cowardly...of you defeated and collected as a 'prize'...it all so angers and frightens him.
Thinking back to that battlefield and imagining how it would be like if you did die...
You would just be another body lying amongst the soldiers and waiting to be reclaimed by the earth as crows take the first bite of your damaged, rotting flesh...
Thorfinn would move on without you. He would be alone again with not a single, upstanding soul by his side. Kindness, jokes and companionship would be no more...
If you died, would his father visit him on his dreams again, telling him he lost his friend?
He cannot explain it but it feels wrong. So much so he feels a disgusting shiver run down his spine just thinking about it.
He gets blinded by his own feelings. And he doesn't even know it.
The lad is like a dog chasing after food, after all.
Theoretically he may confront Askeladd in the middle of a duel (if he gets one in the first place). Asking him what the hell he was thinking, he could have killed you. He would have! Throfinn is sure of it! (No matter what the others say).
In turn, the man just taunts him more, subtly, however. In a way that witnesses might not fully understand, aside from Björn maybe.
(In fact, Björn might be the only one aside from you and Thorfinn who knew what Askeladd was trying to do but he keeps quiet. However, that doesn't mean he approves of his actions. It actually makes him more suspicious on what Askeladd's true feelings about his mercenaries are...)
Back to the taunting, that would anger Thorfinn more than he already was and make him charge at Askeladd without thinking - which, of course, causes him to lose.
This bastard better not mock him! He knew what he saw even if he doesn't understand the intention!
Thorfinn doesnt truly understand that he is being used as a tool. He takes things on a surface level with the way he feels, smells, touches, tastes and sees. And he saw him trying to murder you.
Even so, one day he has to put his issue with that aside if it means having to be the prince's bodyguard while also wanting to get a chance for the next duel. That doesn't mean he will not ever forget waht Askealdd did however...

No awful things this time - except lots of potential harrassment of the other bandmates and men in general is mentioned. Many female examples in general + gender-neutral ones.]
Also literally had to split my original post in two because tumblr said no 🤡 one more word and youre out
i simply have;;;;;; too much brainrot ughhh too many thoughts
Sweet Things Thorfinn would Do For/With You Now That You Trust Each Other And Get Along And I Have Too Many Thoughts In No Order BUt Uh Things Literally Start From 5.1 Better Read That First :)
Well, the son of Thors better stop complaining, cause when it's your turn to keep watch and he sleeps, he is even worse.
Since he isn't that tall, the blonde can easily nuzzle into your neck or at least lean against your shoulder (Things are harder if you are female, he wouldn't know where to even lean his head on without going too far or you getting the wrong idea. He is small enough to nuzzle his head into your chest but for him that is a no-go. Damn it, why does it have to be so complicated with, ugh, women???).
That would be the one thing he would not accept if you told him it's okay to lean against your chest. He can (with a few grumbles and patience, his eyes avoiding you while doing so) accept leaning on your shoulder, holding you piggy-back, wrapping his arms around you...but not this. This isn't something he'd do...or what he came for to do. He is a warrior, not someone who plays around.
He refuses while adding that nobody knows what they do in their sleep. You, for example, could toss and turn, drool or might straight up hit his face in your sleep (it's up to you if you really do that).
Even if you insist that you trust him and know he wouldn't ever stoop so low, he can't. Thorfinn secretly feels touched that you hold him to such high regard (lol to not be a pervert is not something to be proud of, you're doing the bare minimum) and while everything you are saying is true, Thorfinn can't.
You don't understand. He is not comfortable with it.
Holding someone in his arms in the first place is embarrassing...and on top of that, the feeling of your warmth, your body, your scent and him leaning against you and ending up feeling the softness of your chest...
No. No, he can't. He doesn't want to.
He won't tell you exactly so though. You get that it's not the most appropiate thing but Thorfinn won't ever go to the lengths of explaining this embarrassing, flustering feeling he gets just thinking about it - why are you even arguing about this?! You may be okay with it but he is not.
Fine, the shoulder it is. Here, you'll even hold his head so he won't lean on anything else while sleeping.
Sure, go ahead and make as much fun of him as you like (actually maybe don't he barks back) but he'd gladly take that over anything else.
Of course, this only really happens when you even have a conversation like that.
However, besides the arguing, there is one more disadvantage as being the one keeping watch...
Thorfinn is known to have absolutely awful nightmares. You are aware of them too, saw him struggling right in front of you but this is a different experience when you are this close to him and keeping him warm.
The young man is more aggitated and wild in his sleep as one might think. Every nightmare starts out similiarly and slowly to the point where you can tell when he is having one.
He squirms around a bit and mumbles incoherrently at the beginning, usually when things haven't turned for the worst. Through a few trials and tribulations (he unfortunately has a bad dream almost every two nights, the poor guy) you learned that hushing him and rubbing his back can help.
It feels similiar to calming down a child and you suppose it might be exactly that. When witnessing Thorfinn, the fearless and confident 'Karlsefni' who barges through battles without hesitation, struggle through something as normal and human as a bad dream...it reminds you that he is indeed just a boy despite everything. He too, has nightmares just like any other child, including you.
It is heart-wrenching when one thinks about it...hence why you try to help whenever you can, even if the blonde is not aware of it.
You aren't doing this as a favor...you want to help him.
Unfortunately, a few hushes and rubs to the back will not always be of aid when the nightmares reach their peak. The young man then starts to truly panic and you have a hard time keeping him in place as he seems to slowly notice that he is being physically held and tries to push you away.
You aren't an all-soothing prodigy so it is only a matter of time when he wakes up screaming. There might have been times where he quickly outflung his dagger at the feeling of someone else's presence but calms down when he sees it's you who is holding him.
Thorfinn snaps his gaze around to understand where he really is. This isn't Iceland and not the warm meadow covered in blood he just saw...this is where he fell asleep with you. You can try to explain the situation to him and he wordlessly takes in the information while still panting heavily.
You can try to offer him to go back to sleep but the chance for him to refuse and keep watch this time instead is high. He lets out a sigh and shakes his head, evidently trying to clear it. Trying to sleep wouldn't help...
But when there is the slight sliver of a chance that he accepts, he does so eerily quiet. In these situations, Thorfinn is incredibly exhausted and unwittingly in need of comfort. He can feel his heart pounding in his chest, like it's trying to rip away from his bones like a bird desperately escaping its cage.
He lies back down and you wrap your arms around him. There is not a peep from him as his eyes seemed glazed and tired, looking down to the ground. He seems to be in a completely different world as he follows your command.
You lie back down as if nothing happened. The young man's hold on you is looser, he doesn't find the strength to grab you any tighter. Instead he just leans into you, eyes tiredly blinking into your shirt.
There is not a single thought in his head. If he does let it happen, he'd just be haunted by the nightmare he saw again; by his father and his words of wisdom and warnings. He can't bear to think of him. It hurts too much.
...And yet, there is something else that feels familiar. When you hold him like this and he goes back to basking in your body warmth, it almost seems nostalgic. Of course...he used to have a home, a bed that was once so warm.
A normal house with a normal bed and a normal family. There was this girl...his sister, Ylva, wasn't it? She would cuddle with him too, even if he wasn't in the mood for it.
Yes, she'd hug and squeeze him tight and tell him to stop complaining...it was warm just like now.
If you do anything Ylva used to do during his sleep, a wave of nostalgia would wash over him but he cannot explain why.
It feels comfortable and Thorfinn is surprised at how easily he can fall asleep again.
There can be the slight chance that you also confide in each other although there isn't much to tell from Thorfinn's side.
He is just a normal young man - aside from watching his father die by Askeladd's hand. It's something you already know from the time he somewhat hypnotically told you of his nightmare and what they are about (give him a break, he was sleep-deprived and had suffered from enough dreams the nights before).
Yet he could tell you a tad bit more when you bring up your home, family or tales and ask him about his own...like that he is from Iceland and he remembers having had sheeps, a mother and a sister...
He doesn't know what to say about them though. There are...objectively true things such as his sister being quite older and him remembering his mother always having been sick.
When you ask him if he doesn't want to see them again if they are even alive still, he cannot answer. He just looks away with an thoughtful but unreadable gaze.
When you tell him of your past and troubles Thorfinn surprisingly enough listens attentively, especially if your tale is rather sad or leaves you depressed.
Usually Thorfinn doesn't give a shit about anyone else's sob story to be frank. It shows how special you are that he even listens and doesn't spit out any insults.
He cant offer much comfort though, I'm afraid. The best that comes to his mind is to utter a soft "sorry about that" or rub your back briefly.
To be fair, it is also difficult to comfort Thorfinn. The young man never had the chance to properly grieve his father and can only boil his entire emotions into hatred. Hatred, hatred, hatred - all for the man who he follows into battle. Anyone else simply talks about his father as if he was just some man, if it wasn't for the short demonstration of his power.
The topic is delicate. Anything that is said or done too much or too little cannot lead to any comfort even when that is your full intention. Thorfinn might snap and say that you didnt know him so don't talk like you do. Or he just brushes your attempt off and sulks by himself. He is too emotional to really talk about anything. I believe a part of him even dislikes thinking back to that day even as he sees it as his sole purpose. Whenever he thinks of avenging Thors, he also thinks of the words he keeps on telling whenever he is plagued by his nightmares. Thors is telling him he is doing something wrong but he cannot accept that. It's hard to really remember each and every word in detail but the feeling he gets thinking about them are akin to getting his heart ripped out.
You can try...and over time or during an especially carefully treated situation, Thorfinn can appreciate your thoughtfullness (it makes him realize, once again, that you are a normal person amongst killers) with a small smile. It...feels strange to just talk about everything that happened...but he supposes it's not bad, even if it is hard.
He will lean against your shoulder afterwards, claiming he is tired and is going to take a nap. Wether or not he really does so is up to him. You let him rest anyway and it's one of the reasons why he has a soft spot in his heart for you.
As you can imagine, you and Thorfinn travel a lot together, for several months, even years maybe.
Each season has its perks and challenges.
Spring is lighthearted and easy to get through. Flowers bloom and the weather is getting warmer. You two often forage for anything sprouting under the snow and hunt animals out of hibernation.
Summer is harsh in its temperature in contrast. Water is shared ("Is that an indirect kiss?!", the men whoop which only makes Thorfinn glare) and you'll be straight up jumping into lakes to cool off. (Again, harrassment from the band when they see you heading towards a lake. No, you are not bathing together).
Fall makes one anxious. It just means you'll have to be sparse with provisions and prepare for the cold. The food is tasty this season though and you share again.
Winter is the crulest one of them all. Both of you probably have no choice but to share your blankets and cuddle to stay warm. You could do so on your own but it is definietly warmer when hunched close together (Expect more comments from the men).
On the very rare occasion where you hold hands, is when it's dark and cold. One of you holds a torch and in order to not get seperated in this darkness, you hold hands. The feeling of each other's fingers tightly clasping the other's hand feels the most safe.
Oh and ALSO
I think there IS a difference when you started becoming friends/met him when he was 14 y/o.
Things are a bit different, Thorfinn is a bit different back then. More merciful, not as emotionless and not as hardened by the cruel reality of battles and raids.
SO when you were friends at that age already (or becoming friends during that stage, slowly of course) I think there would definitely be more trust and affection from Thorfinn.
He wouldn't trust you any less or feel different about you if that were not the case, but the thought of having had a friend since the young age of 14, meanig having someone at your side for at least three years out of these grueling eleven, can mean a lot for someone.
You definitely are someone he cannot lose. Someone he has to protect and keep safe. What would he do if his one shred of normalcy was just gone and he has to keep moving with these beasts? It would devastate him.
Definitely more honest about his feelings. He would be just as curt and brief as ever but he would at least tell you a bit more.
More trust, more about his past and father, more of what he thinks of Askeladd and his men, more of what he thinks of you and more affection. More smiles directed at you and brought by you. Definitely.
So, as you might have guessed, Thorfinn trusts you an awful lot.
Enough that you won't stab him in the back.
After all that has happened (and will happen) why should he not trust you? It's the one thing that sets you apart from the other mercenaries. Trust.
There is that smooth flow between you two when you interact and it is heavily underlined when it's happens in the presence of the others. You two seem normal in comparison to them. Like normal young kids among blood-thirsty, crass vikings.
It certainly gets the attention of the others...
Again, it is all done away and from the ratio of. It's clear you don't like them and there are certainly some that do not like you either.
Speaking of the others, by far almost everyone must be aware of your bond by now. If it wasn't you two constantly hanging out, then it certainly must have been the time Thorfinn was so adamant on keeping you away from everyone when you were hurt. His aggression over your state was crystal-clear.
There would definitely be some that talk or even gossip about you. Either that you're stuck to each other's hip since you're almost like twins, like-minded brats or even lovers. Certainly some will straight up harrass you two when passing by on where you are going and what you are going to do, just the two of you, all alone.
When such things happen, Thorfinn responds rather aggressively. He will not pick a fight, he cannot afford to since he keeps on saving his strength and energy for Askeladd. Besides, he does not care for some random and self-proclaimed 'warrior'. If anything, he'd just bark at them to shut the hell up.
He would be especially agitated if he does hold romantic feelings for you.
If you are a woman, regardless of age, there will also be men who will harrass you personally (usually newbies). There might even be some that are foolish enough to get touchy, but before that happens and even before you can even do or say anything, Thorfinn will be by your side and will either tell them off or even get physical. It depends on wheter or not they are too close to you or said something that pissed him off.
The most he'll do is dislocate a joint and kick them in the kneecaps - afterwards he draws his dagger while standing in front of you, telling and warning them to never go near you again.
Thorfinn in general is very protective of you - overprotective even. He may deny all accusations of his care for you but his actions speak louder than any of his defenses. Everyone notices that as well.
He is especially and incredibly, exaggeratingly overprotective of you if you are female.
However, after a bit of time Thorfinn does not care what any of them think anymore.
The whipsers, the gossip...it does anger him and he will bark back when he is spoken to about it directly but that won't make the blonde act any different around you.
When you march and there is a need to, he has no qualms about having you lean on him, carrying you piggy-back style, nudging and annoying you...and neither do you mind doing all of this for him. The band can say and think whatever they want, it is clear you are a duo.
In fact, many already are aware that you two aren't really part of the band. You just happen to listen to Askeladd and so do they. (Maybe there are a few newbies that are like huah??? Wh-what??? Why aren't u saving us, we, we are Team 🥺???)
Some have given up on talking about and to you two. Let the kids think they can overthrow the world, they're young and stubborn...
The only ones you care about is each other. The other is always protected and cared for, no matter what.
It might make some grumble...while others wish they could have what you two have (cough Björn). Either some will take their distance due to this or straight up try and approach you two constantly. It's a double-edged sword.
There will be some just to bother you two because you are so close. ("Hey, patching up Thorfinn again, huh? We need help too, whaddabout us?" Or "You think a tad bit rain is going to chip your friend's nail? You're too fussy, Thorfinn!")
And in turn there will be some who sigh and avoid you two, saying you two aren't worth the time. ("Let 'em. Kids only think about themselves." Or "No use tryin' to make a deal with that duo. If ya aren't one of them, they won't raise a finger.").
Another little scenario: If you ever find the privilige to travel with a wagon and you get to sit on it? You can bet Thorfinn will be there too.
Actually, he'd be there first and reserve a seat for you and just for you. None of the other men better not get the idea that the blonde is going to let them sit next to him.
He'd sit down right next to the last seat on the end of the wagon and the moment someone even thinks of approaching that one free seat, he will snap his leg up against the wall of the wagon and a loud 'bam' and a slight shook will follow. Whoever that tried to sit there better take the hint.
If they don't, then Thorfinn's glare as dark as thunder will certainly make them understand.
On that note, Thorfinn will make sure that you won't ever get to sit beside someone else other than him. Its the reason why he saves the last seat, so you can sit next to him. The other thing right next to you would be the wall.
He would always do so in situations like these if you are female. He wouldn't let you be close to the other men in general then.
Even those that have no intentions at all or are outsiders...it doesn't matter. He wouldn't let any of them get close to you.
Now for an very female-hinted scenario:
As mentioned, Thorfinn is ridicilously overprotective of you if you are a woman. He is aware of many things but tends to go overboard with a lot of things too. Any man is a danger to you in his eyes which is also one of the reasons why he always sticks with you wherever you go.
Kids and women? Pah, you can deal with them, no matter if they are pickpockets or just want to scam you or something (unless of course one approaches you with more vile or flirtatious intentions).
A man? Egasp, what's that bastard thinking talking to you?!
His overprotective nature comes from genuine concern over your well-being rather than jealousy. Unless...that guy has been pestering you for too long and Thorfinn does hold some romantic feelings for you...👀
If he does, you can be sure he doesn't notice it. Thorfinn literally is the last person in the room to notice he has feelings for you. Askeladd and Co. could give him a powerpoint presentation including foul-proof evidence and he'd still would deny it - because he genuinely is not aware of his feelings.
Nevertheless, platonic or romantic, Thorfinn will be quick to step between you and the person. It doesn't matter if they were trying to sell you something, ask you something or were indeed harassing you. They could be a bulky, intimidating fighter or a simple gosling villager. Thorfinn would glare up at them regardless and spit at them with a scowl to get lost.
You see, aside on the sea and lonely shores, there is one village where Askeladd's band is welcome and that is the village of his uncle. You can easily stroll through there no problem, perhaps get some items on the way from a vendor or get a few weapons repaired by the local blacksmith. Normal things anyone would do and you are going through these chores with Thorfinn in mind, too! The guy's beaten up body could use some salves or a better shield...
If you were any other lass, nobody would bat an eye. Unfortunately, some would approach you saying 'oh, you are new! Haven't seen you here before!' whilst quickly realizing with the armor and weapns you bear that you are part of great Askeladd's band...
So that also means that you might get pestered by a young greenie trying to convince you to convince Askeladd to let him join the mercenaries...he has heard all the tales and wants to fight too! Be part of the battlefield and kill a commander! And, on top of that, you would get a handsome, pretty warrior to protect you...
It is a possibility that can happen with these inexperienced, big-eyed folks. It's almost endearing as it is equally stupid how much they revere the battlefield...if only they knew...
It is even worse when you are being spoken to by an actual experienced warrior. Their arrogance is off the charts.
Asking what such a young woman is doing here being part of the band and why you wouldn't want to stay here in this village instead...you're still young and have all your limbs, going out there into the sea might be the last trip you'll ever have! Better stay on safe land with a strong warrior to protect you...it's best if women like you are safe and protected anyway, so you can get married and have children. Perhaps even with him...
Long story short, bleh things happen to you as a woman, unfortunately.
That's where Thorfinn comes in. Either having trailed after you right by your side the whole time or having looked for you - after all, he wants to keep you safe.
So there he is telling either this gosling or hulk of a man to get lost. The problem is that Thorfinn honestly thinks a few threatening words would work. There is usually a 50/50 chance that actually works, mostly with normal farmers and villagers who just wanted to try their luck (and in Thorfinn's mind they are foolish if they actually thought they had a chance with you).
Still, there will be some people, inexperienced in battle or not, who will not take Thorfinn seriously due to his age and stature. A little minion like him thinks he can just insult him like that? (Again, they might say that but there are a few people who immediately are intimidated by his thunder-like scowl. Shortie or not, better not mess with that guy).
Those who are scared of him run away as soon as they can. Thorfinn scoffs, muttering what a coward they were - before turning to you. I can imagine him just asking you if you are alright and telling you to stay close to him, there are real idiots out here.
However; If the man runs away while yelling out a quick profanity at Thorfinn? The blonde would just grumble. If he insulted you however while running away? Oh, he gets pissed.
Seriously contemplates if he should run after the guy and uppercut him. But he decides to let it go for now. Still, after hearing such a thing it causes him to stay even closer to you and also letting you know not to stray from his side. If a guy like that straight up gets angry enough to insult you while you did nothing wrong, who knows what he might do if you were alone.
It all sounds so demeaning from him. But know that he is saying all these harsh things to protect you.
As metioned, there is a 50/50 chance that his threats actually work. For those that do not heed his words, Thorfinn is ready to pull some punches.
There will be some that will proudly yell out around him to concegrate everyone nearby around him for a duel. However, there is only one kind of duel Thorfinn wants to fight, so before the guy can even finish his sentence, the blonde quickly overthrows him with one punch to the ground. For his age and stature he is strong (remember when he broke another kid's arm when he was six?).
He doesn't have any time for this. Once he sees that idiot not standing up anymore, he takes your wrist and leads you somewhere else with a gruff "let's go." He doesn't care for the looks he'll get or what Askeladd might say or who he just punched the daylights out or even if there are some other "friends" of the unconscious guy telling him to stop, he will not. This is a waste of his time and you aren't safe so you two are leaving.
If, however, someone (or the same guy who somehow remained conscious) throws any more insults at you, he might stop mid-track.
Either one of his "buddies" or the guy himself approaches him (shakily, trying to hide that though) and asks "What he is doing defending some harlot like that?"
Excuse him?
With a glare he turns back silently, his grip hard on you and pushing you behind him. The man cackles nervously, saying that you were the one coming up to him like that, flirting with him. If Thorfinn should punish someone it should be his woman cheating on him.
Some peple nearby might freeze in awe, whispering amongst themselves.
You do not even need to defend yourself.
Before the guy can blink, he is swept off his feet and once again punched right in the jaw so hard it leaves him toothless. Thorfinn is quick to shake off the saliva and blood on his hand.
He glares down on the guy (who is definitely out cold now) and everyone else around him too, no matter if innocent or not.
"No one goes near that woman."
He says before quickly returning to your side and leading you out of there for real this time.
Something like that wasn't the first time happening and certainly will not be the last.
Maybe after some time and after thanking him constantly for the savings (which he always brushes off or uses the opportunity to scold you for just...being there. Again, not in a demeaning way, he just wants to keep you safe. It's hard though when you are a woman and he understands that but still remains harsh with his words) you start to feel guilty. You can try as you may but situations like these happen. You can't control the actions of other people.
If you start to try to repay him with food or taking over his chores and orders, he'll tell you to stop. He didn't do all of this to get a favor to you. It was to keep you safe.
I mean, I'm sure you are aware that Thorfinn cares for you just as you care for him but if you were to ask him why he even goes to the lengths of protecting you from creeps and harrassments, he'll bark back his usual counter questions. 'What, did you want that to happen?' Or 'Something serious could have happened to you if I didn't intervene. Nobody else would do that. What kind of questions is that anyway?!' - Anything to make you drop the topic. He can't overcome his pride and embarrassment to say: 'Because I want to keep you safe. I care for you.'
It is especially hard for him if he does hold romantic feelings for you.
While he is not really aware of them, he can't deny his heart picking up on speed and his face getting hotter when you look at him like that. There is also this slight disgust he felt when you are obviously being harrassed and flirted with, though platonic Thorfinn feels that too.
If someoone outside the band questions your type of relationship? Pisses him of too.
Actually, lots of things piss him off.
Someone might straight up go ahead and asks: "Is that your woman?"
Thorfinn scowls and tries to ignore that person. If he says no, they might try to pester you and if he then intervenes it will lead to a 'Huh? But you said that isn't your woman...fair game!'
If he says yes...that'd be a lie, no matter what he feels for you. It is also very flustering and very embarrassing and anyone would clearly be able to point out his red cheeks then. Besides, lying about something like that to keep you safe is not something he sees as necessary. Thorfinn can keep you safe with these two hands and daggers.
If you approach him and tell him to just 'play pretend' when outside of the band to avoid confrontations like that, he will actually refuse. You argue it is for your safety and much easier to deal with than him constantly having to barge in and save you with a few whippings but again, the blonde refuses.
He does not need to 'play pretend' he can keep you safe like this if you just stay close to him. Stick by his side and nothing will happen to you.
In reality, he cannot deal with the mere words 'That is my woman. She belongs to me.' It feels wrong, messes with his brain and not to mention is embarrassing. He would feel his heart beating against his chest like crazy just thinking about these words and he finds it easier to beat people to a pulp than say them even if it was just pretending.
Sometimes...no matter if he feels platonically for you or not...there are times where he constantly has to think about the things you do and say. Your affectionate words and gestures, the things you risk in order to save his life, the things you had already done for him in the past before he considered you so precious, the sheer gentleness that is deeply buried within you that you have to crack open your shell at times just to share it with him to comfort him...it all festers in his head and eats away at his mind. You smile and laugh and joke and care like a normal person...and it all so touches and bothers him so. He can't stop thinking about it.
If you catch him being lost in his own thoughts, the above mentioned things might be the reasons why.
Jealousy...is not something Thorfinn really feels.
It is usually hate, hate, you, hate, keeping you safe, hate, hate, staying with you...
You get the gist.
Really, there is never a reason for him to feel jealous of anything or anyone at all. What's there to be jealous about these men who raid and kill? What's there to be jealous about Askeladd? (Aside that he managed to kill the person he hates in two years and Thorfinn couldn't do it in eleven...).
What's there to be jealous about you? Hell, he feels glad he met you and has you with him!
But when it comes to you being with other people...it might spark that green monster to life.
Platonic Thorfinn would be perplexed to find you easily talking to another person with such...friendliness like you do with him (like someone like Prince Canute). However, with Thorfinn it took months, maybe an entire year to even get to this level of closeness and friendliness but here you are talking to that person you've known for a few days and you seem so...normal??? Relaxed???
And that person seems harmless too...and enjoys your company just as much.
At first it's just confusing. How come you found someone else who you can have real, lasting conversations with that is not Thorfinn??? But Thorfinn is your friend??? Not them. Why??? Are?? You??? Hanging??? With??? THEM???
Then you seek them out more and more and Thorfinn feels like a cat being ignored (even though that is not the case). He sulks and ignores you too until he starts grumbling out claims. Such as you being such good buddies with that person. I must be great to talk to them.
It somewhat makes him insecure. The young man knows he is curt and blunt, harsh and mean. He doesn't care about anyone but you. So when the one person he cares about and for just easily finds a good conversation partner - which Thorfinn is really not - he realizes that you are the normal one. He is abnormal.
Kinda wishes you never met that person to begin with and instead had all your attention on him. There is this idealistic fantasy of his where you are only his friend and vice versa. You do not need anyone else. It is you and Thorfinn against the world.
Romantic Thorfinn is even sulkier and aggressive. Aggressive against that person who makes you smile so much.
Again, it starts out with confusion. It's this disgusting feeling seeded in his stomach that makes him so uncomfortable whenever you aren't with him but instead with them. He watches you from the corner of his eye as you smile and laugh at someone else.
There you go again, being the shred of normalcy in this band, in his life. You are laughing and smiling as if you weren't a viking. As if you are leading a normal life.
Thorfinn's life is doomed though the moment he sees that blush on your face.
It happens in slow-motion. His eyes widen in utter shock of what he is witnessing. In the very first seconds of observing your cheeks becoming a cherry red, tinted and flushed...Thorfinn doesn't understand it at first. It's like watching him discover a completely new side of the world, not even being able to comprehend the sight of your face and what it means.
But just a second later, he does.
It kinda is a stab in the chest. Thorfinn witnesses a new side of you bloom and it's so wonderful and it is not directed at him. At this very moment, you aren't a viking but just a young person slowly getting aquainted with love.
And it's not him.
He gets soooo passive aggressive with that person it is ridicilous. 'Accidental' pushes and shoves, grumbling when he has to speak to them and ugh, help them let alone save them. No, thank you.
Around you he gets...sadder. Again, there is a slight insecurity of not being able to offer you everything that person can offer. He is strong...but he doesn't know if he can make you as happy as they can.
Yet at the same time, completely tries to deny any kind of feelings for you to himself. Why is he feeling like this? Why can't he get your flushed red face out of his head and why does it make him so sad?
There is that idealised fantasy of his again...of wanting for things to go back when it was just you and Thorfinn and no one else. He'd be fine if you didn't hold the same feelings but as long as it was you two against the world again, he'd be okay.
I am so sure you already go that but Thorfinn's main behaviour to you is that he is seeking you out, being as nice to you as he can and being overprotective of you.
And oh boy, don't get me started when it comes to Askeladd out of all people.
Thorfinn does not trust Askeladd as far as he can spit. He is fine with him talking to you, wether of tactics or smalltalk, he does that too. He is fine when you are the one approaching the man. It's a different story when the old bastard is approaching you.
When calling out an order you are 99% of the time with Thorfinn and vice versa. Whatever the leader has got to say, the blonde will catch onto it as well. When Askeladd is asking to speak with you in private? My man is very suspicious. Watches the two of you like a hawk with his trademark pout while others whisper how intimidating good ol' Thorfinn looks. Things like; "Man, he gets reaaally pissed off when it comes to our leader!" Or "Ah, lad is protective and jealous like a mother bird, look at that!"
(Some are just sitting and waiting to watch Thorfinn's reaction. It's just too entertaining).
But when he just appraches you out of nowhere? Oh, nah, nah, nah, hell no.
If he does so while Thorfinn isn't in close proximity to you, the old man can expect a dagger thrown at him when he comes too close to you - at best. At worst is when he touches you out of the blue and he finds himself holding back Thorfinn from hitting him with the hilt of his blade. All it needs is to have him touch a single strand of hair.
The more he hates a person, the more protective Thorfinn is of you when it comes to them. Especially when that person tried to kill you just to see his reaction.
The men have loooooong known and constantly talk about whenever such a scenario happens. Again, how protective, stubborn and tenacious he is. It's downright comical and there will be some who laugh at this - it is almost like a running gag for them.
Aske(chad)ladd does one thing to you, gets too close to you and Thorfinn seems to just jump out of the shadows and try to strike him down only for the lad to drop to the ground or for Askeladd to feign regret and and say that he won't ever do that again, promise. Thorfinn only scowls more at his mockery.
It's something you can hardly control and it does influence your reputation in the band.
No matter what you do or how useful you are, you will always be known to have Thorfinn as your second shadow (or vice versa if you are also oveprotective).
Unfortunately, this obvious behaviour proves to be a disadvantage for Thorfinn.
You have squeezed yourself into his heart, right between the overgrowing hatred he bears for the older man. Just like the hatred, you are both a drive and a weakness.
So, what Thorfinn think would happen? What did you think? Of course Askeladd is going to exploit this weakness!
It starts out small, as an experiment one might say. Askeladd likes to see to what lengths Thorfinn would go for you and what exactly he'd do at certain situations (like the dilemma at the battlefield: Complete the mission and win a duel with him or prioritise your safety?) Thorfinn usually tries to solve these dilemmas by achivieng both goals.
But no matter what, Askeladd notices, you and your well-being are always his priority.
The man can't help but respect that, secretly however. To have someone to protect is something precious. A man without love is empty, after all.
Still, no matter how much respect he bears or how often he plays with the both of you, nothing will make him stop. He has gotten so far already as a leader, he won't stop at just two stupid kids.
Would also try out and see if only your safety is something worth protecting. Askeladd might insult you or give you the most phyiscally demanding order and sees if Thorfinn does anything. When insulted, the son of Thors does bark back at him as if he was the one insulted and at gruelling tasks, he helps out when he has nothing else to do (or nothing more important).
Gods, this boy is foolish. Just a little lad still. His emotions will be the death of him and he better get it together.
[OK this entire thing is out of order but...i had...so many ideas and thoughts and the moment i started to write for jealous Thorfinn I had a rush of ideas for romantic THorfinn AND yandere Thorfinn...it never lets me go sigh
definietly going to take a break i should be doing uh actual importnat things in my life :,)]

Also literally had to split my original post in two because tumblr said no 🤡 one more word and youre out
i simply have;;;;;; too much brainrot ughhh too many thoughts
Sweet Things Thorfinn would Do For/With You Now That You Trust Each Other And Get Along And I Have Too Many Thoughts In No Order :)
Just as a heads up:
Never, never ever would Thorfinn ever express his feelings for you verbally, no matter if platonic or romantic. Not a living soul is going to know what's really going on inside of him (not like he even knows what he's really feeling!). Even you could be the one asking him why he's doing what he does and what he feels in his heart but Thorfinn would only scoff and leave you with no answer. If anything, he'd just come up with a light counter question.
The blonde is careful when he handles you. Do not misunderstand, there will be no signs or touches of affections from him. Oh, no, no, no. Thorfinn pushes, drags and pulls whenever and however he pleases. It's just when he does it with you, he keeps reminding himself to be gentle.
Not because he sees you as fragile, injured or not, but because he wants to be gentle with you. He's just not used to it, hence the remembering.
When he pushes you, he does so with half of his strength and because he wants to keep you out of harms way. While others roll down the hill and break their necks, you stumble.
When he drags you, he is, well, dragging you. Maybe you talk for too long, you're distracted or you're being too slow, ya drag. Again, he doesn't haul you by the collar but instead clasps your wrists and leads you elsewhere.
When he pulls, he is first guiding you, then giving you a brief shove into the right direction with his hand on your back. Sometimes he does pull on your hair though to wake you up. The guy is cheeky like that at times, only when you two are alone though and then he has the gall to say with a grin that he just pulled some hay out of your hair (if you have light-colored hair, then he has the excuse that he couldn't just see the hay and...pulled on a handful of locks). And if he doesn't do that, you can bet he pinches your nose long enough to wake you up.
Over time however, there will be not need to remind himself to be gentle. Thorfinn will just become gentle with you. It's like he's learning.
In general he would not think of anything of your gentle or soft touches. Thorfinn takes it that you find his company pleasant too so he wouldn't be surprised if you were kind with the way you are handling him.
However, he might freeze up like a cat that got in contact with water or even have the slightest of blushes on his face (very faint and very rare though!) if you show him any signs of affections or intimacy.
Your grin could rival the sun or you can giggle like a princess and Thorfinn would only smile at the brief joy you can share. It's nothing that flusters him.
However, if you were to tell him how, depsite everything, glad you are that you met him or that even he can be sweet in the same breath, then prepare to meet widened eyes and lips stretched to a line. It's hard to read what he's feeling in situations like these.
Bonus points if you are being affectionate with him. Nothing grand but something akin to gently brushing his hair out of his face when checking for injuries (the sensation of your fingertips gingerly gliding over his skin is foreign), tapping his face when trying to wake him up (your 'Hey, hey!'s that form as warm breaths hit his skin and your own hand is warm on his cheek) or when he drags you away with his grasp on your wrist, your fingers sometimes graze over his palm (You don't seem upset when he does that. It's like you let him know that you are there). All of these little gestures stun him at times...and yes, he might blush. Do NOT ever point it out or you're dead!
Even so, sometimes...just sometimes...if you are being reaaally cautious, you can catch him being affectionate as well.
It's not his fault. Your affection just has infected him.
The young man doesn't even notice. There isn't a change of behaviour or character, it is just a simple action that passes by like a breeze if you blink. When he thinks your joke was lame, he teasingly gives you light shove pat on your noggin (he acts like he's 'punishing' you for that bad joke even if his touch didn't hurt at all). When he cuts your hair or untangles it, he runs his fingers through as a last check-up (or maybe he does it twice, very gently too). When you are too tired or injured he gives you a piggy-back ride if the band has to move on, careful not touch your thighs (in fact he balls his hands up in fists so he can't have his fingers brush you) and adjusting you so you can be comfortable. You can bet he will tell you to hold onto him tightly so you won't and can't fall off. When he wants to wake you up, he nudges his head with yours, right next to his.
Thorfinn doesn't even realize these things can be seen as trusting or intimate. He just...does them. After all this time, why should he be rough with you?
When on baot, both of you have no choice but to share the same sleeping spots with the other men, no matter how much you dislike them. Either you'd wake up before them to enjoy the stillness or sleep in as much as possible until you have to get up. Since neither of you are of any help on the ship (rather Thorfinn refuses to when there is nothing in it for him and for your age you aren't as strong as the others to row).
On land you can bet your camp is faaaaar away from the others. Even when there are not on the battlefield, they are loud, sing, tell each other stories, pillage houses left behind or end up arguing which always leads to a duel. It's not pleasant to be with them so you two prefer each other.
If there are truly no enemies near, both of you feel free to fall asleep...but after that stunt from Askeladd, Thorfinn would always insist on staying up at least a bit before sunrise. It doesn't matter if Askeladd himself comes near, any of them men could be a potential danger (especially if you are a woman).
You wake up and get ready for breakfast. Anything that is edible will do and you both quickly decide who does what. Both of you are okay with whatever task needs to be done, so there isn't much arguing (neither is there in general). You cook, eat, and Thorfinn often trains during the breaks before the band moves on. He refuses to train with you though. On one hand, since he aims to kill, he cannot afford to go easy in general even if it is for sparring. On the other hand, he doesn't want you to get hurt. The blonde doesn't really believe he ever would, even on accident while training, hurt you (the guy is a bit unaware of his strength though...like, he totally could accidentally hurt you. If you told him so, he wouldn't believe you.) - but, as mentioned - Thorfinn does not risk anything when it comes to your safety.
You can best believe he would never admit that though. It's one, if not the only thing he is very much self-aware of - wanting to keep you safe. So if you ever ask why or you insist on training, he will bluntly and briefly tell you no.
If he doesn't train, you check each other's weapons or prepare yourselves while casually chatting. Better be safe than sorry.
If there isn't anywhere to go or anything to do, you'd usually go through your routine or do things that need to be done.
Patching up clothes or repairing weapons near a river while the other one catches some fish for lunch or as provisions. Getting familiar with the area or finding other useful material in the wild (breath of the wild style).
Wether you like or not, both of you have to bathe sooner or later. It gets rid of the stench, of blood, potential infections and diseases. You can't go on sailing the sea when you are this filthy.
I feel like Thorfinn in general is not fond of bathing. He would only do it if he has to, so he probably waits until the day he really, really needs to. When he is stinky and gross. Go ahead and tell him so while covering your nose, he might immediately defend himself but he needs the reality check.
No matter who you are or how close you two might be, I don't believe Thorfinn would want to bathe with you. He'd prefer to do it alone for...no reason really. He is done with it quite quickly too anyway, so he wouldn't need the help or company. It's just not something he'd like to do (yes, he'd find a way to wash his own back if it means he won't have to bathe with you).
He wouldn't want to bathe with you if you are female anyway. So it's not even a question.
In the meantime, he does not mind if you watch his belongings, inlcuding his dagger. The young man wouldn't let his dagger out of his sight for a second but he trusts you to watch it. However, he'd appreciate it if you wouldn't touch or clean it. He would rather do that.
Thorfinn has no problem with you washing his clothes though! Don't be stranger, go ahead! (Well, you did say he reeks. And what's the point in bathing if the clothes stink as well? He's washing himself right now, he doesn't have time, so...)
But in return, he'd do the same for you.
You can go ahead and bathe, he'll watch your belongings and if you ask, well, fine, he'll also wash your clothes.
Again, if you are a woman, he'd definetly will keep watch over your belongings and for you. The blonde would stay near and have his back turned to you as he keeps watch of the area. He can't risk any of the bandmates or others to see you or steal your clothes while you are bathing.
On a note; when he is washing your clothes, he would only go so far as for your pants, top sections, cloak, belts and pockets. He would not touch your underwear. You can go and do that yourself. It's better this way (Thorfinn would in return not expect you to wash his underwear either. Like, ew.).
Aside from bathing, you'd also groom yourselves.
Both of you have no qualms about brushing each other's hair, epecially when it comes to taking out lices. When asked Thorfinn would drop what he was doing (well, if it wasn't anything important) and brush your hair, no problem. The first few times he did that for you he most likely to definitely hurt you and got stuck on some tangled locks multiple times. He does get better though and gets gentler over time.
However, the blonde only insists on help when he is really being terrorized by lices. Even if he has a few, as long as they don't keep him up at night he does not see a reason to brush his hair. Bro could look like a scarecrow but he still wouldn't ask. Thorfinn does not care for his outer appereance as long as he can f i g h t grr.
(Okay incoming angst here: Another reason why he might not want to get his hair brushed is because it might remind him of the old, english mother who did that for him - before he ended up getting her killed. If you were in the middle of brushing his hair like she did, he might freeze up and tell you to stop - sorry, I know I said this would be wholesome but it just came to me,,,, ಥ,_」ಥ I'm sowwy, if you want wholesomness pls ignore this)
Back to the wholesomness haha: If you do brush his hair, no matter if you talk to him/tease him/are completely silent, for the first few times, Thorfinn would definitely get embarrassed.
He knows it's done for the sake of hygiene but...he can't help it. Having you take care of him through such an motherly act is...touching as it is equally embarrasing. It would not help if you started just casually talking to him, or tease him for his behaviour or start humming like a mother taking care of her fledgling. PLEASE. JUST STOP.
And if you compliment how nice his hair looks? That you like how blonde he is? Gods, p l e a s e. just s t o p. You're embarrassing him, he's gonna go red as a tomato!
It's another reminder of how...normal of a person you are. That this moment that you shared was a moment of normalcy.
Normal, everyday interaction. Something akin to what friends, family and lovers have.
You two have long learned to not do this in the presence of the others. While the men simply wash themselves when it rains and groom themselves by running their (usually dirty and bloody) fingers through their hair, they see your way of taking care of yourselfves as too intimate. It's the same result and something many villagers do but it still makes these prideful vikings laugh.
So when you do take care of yourselves, you do it in private (You grumble how anyone can be so childish to mock something as normal as brushing your hair with an actual brush).
This includes cutting hair.
In his opinion, Thorfinn's hair doesn't get in the way so he seldomly cuts it. He can cut your hair whenever you like though.
He'd even use his dagger. There isn't much going through his mind when using said weapon - he might admire it in one hand while holding a few of your locks in his other before starting. The same blade that belonged to his father, which he killed people with and defended the both of you with, he would now use to cut something as simple and light as hair. He'd feel a bit more sentimental though if the point of cutting your hair was benficial to your general safety.
The blade that kills and defends would now keep you a bit safer (would his father agree?).
Aside from all this sentimentality, you can bet all your belongings that Thorfinn is an awful hairdresser.
He'd take a fistful of your hair, just the amount that you said you wanted gone, and just...cuts it. No corrections afterwards whatsoever. He is as gentle as a mother but your hairdo still looks like trash.
Well, in the world or vikings where you could die at any time and at any battlefield, looks don't really matter.
Still, there is something going on in his mind, you can tell.
After or during the haircut, Thorfinn looks at your cut locks in his hand, blinking with an unreadable expression before having the wind slip them out of his grasp.
Perhaps he is thinking that even something like long hair can be a danger out on the battlefield and the sea. Maybe you actually like to keep your hair the way it was but simply had to cut it and saw it as a shame. Or he might have thought how pretty your hair is. Who knows.
Thorfinn is the kind of guy who overthinks but keeps most of these things to himself.
Injuries are common as mercenaries and when you do have some, you two are the only ones taking care of each other.
In fact, either of you would refuse to help anyone else on the ship.
Men who raid, kill and follow a man who tried to get you killed are not worth to fuss over (yes, you both are still salty about that).
They can get sick and rot as much as they want, they won't get any help from you and Thorfinn.
When it comes to injury and sickness, it is one of those times where the both of you treat the other like glass. Gingerly and carefully while ordering that there will be no more working, helping and fighting until they are better. Thorfinn is a bit more stubborn to disobey and fight regardless and you've told him dozends of times how foolish that is. In fact, you might have had to save him a few times because he was being too stubborn.
On that note, you both save each other. It's an unwritten rule and there are no favors expected at the end. You save him and he saves you because both of you want to. Both of you don't want the other to die.
That can lead to arguements on what is considered dangerous. It's all out of tough love, however.
And when the day draws to a close, you two perpare to rest. Food is shared and the sleeping spots prepared. On boat, you are on the far back, huddled close and leaning against the raling to sleep. On land, you either camp or sleep on some hay in a stable.
Nevertheless, before anything can be done you two decide who will keep watch first. The decision is done quickly and whenver the other one starts to feel tired, they nudge the other one awake to switch.
If it gets cold and the wind bites you, well...you and Thorfinn were thinking of cuddling not to freeze to death. It's embarrassing (definitely for him, you could be a total different case entirely).
First you tried to share your blankets but keep some space. That would mean neither of you gets to move though. Besides, what's the point of keeping warm if you can't feel the body temperature of the other?
So...it seems like you have to physically touch. It's easy if both of you are sitting and just lean against each other, maybe even have one rest their head one the other's shoulder or head. Knees touching as your hunched small and close, though Thorfinn is very hesitant to wrap his arms around you. It's different when he is simply patching you up or leading you elsewhere...here he has to keep you warm.
Will most likey not initiate any kind of cuddling/wrapping his arms around you AT ALL. Dude is too embarrassed. And if you are female, then he is certainly hesitant. What if you don't want him to be close at all but have to endure it due to the cold? He surely can't touch you then.
However, if you tell him it's alright or if you initiate it, then...well, he needs time and a bit more encouraging but he will accept. Gingerly so though, and constantly overthinking where he even should put his arms. Finally decides to just have his arms around your shoulders, maybe rest his hand on your head.
Speaking of heads, he really, really, really prefers to have your head on his shoulder and not the other way around. As comforting as the thought may be...it also makes him feel small, like he is being taken care of. Just let him rest his head on your head, alright?
Please do not talk to him during this. It's beyond embarrassing but also...flustering. Thorfinn wouldn't know what to say anyway. Sleep, it's the reason why you are so close in the first place, right?
Now if you were lying on the ground...uh oh.
Thorfinn would not ever cuddle with you while lying down. He'd rather freeze to death.
No, no, no, no. He can't handle that.
But if you were the one freezing? If the cold, howling wind bites you and snow starts covering you like a blanket? He would do it. No question.
Again, please take the initiate. Just...tell him what to do, briefly and bluntly with no teasing. The blonde doesn't have the patience for that.
Thorfinn could never spoon in general, let alone be the BIG spoon. You and him...aren't like that. And have him be the little spoon? No, feeling your arms around him from the back is also just too much. It messes with his head and seldomly might even make his heart speed up.
Ugh, how annoying.
No spoons. Just not dying. That's it.
It's best to just sit and sleep if you have to cuddle.
Having your arms around each other, being so close, lying on the hay, your face so close to his...and then, maybe you even snore and he feels your breath fawning over his lips...
Bonus points - or rather, to add to his anxious horror - it would even be worse if you move a lot in your sleep.
You could cuddle into his chest, neck or face. That'd just be awful. How is he supposed to move? How is this going to look like in the morning?
AND IF YOU MOVE AWAY FROM HIM AND HE IS SUPPOSED TO KEEP YOU CLOSE SO YOU WON'T GET COLD??? BRO HE IS TRYING TO HELP YOU.
Does he seriously have to physically pull you close to him? What. A. Drag. He shouldn't have to be dealing with this.
The young man is already battling with himself where he is supposed to keep his hands when pulling you back to your original position. Oh, hell no, he going to wake you up and tell you to stop moving (stop snoring while you're add it btw).
Oh, also a VERY important point: You are not shorter than Thorfinn. Period. You can be the same height or taller but Thorfinn keeps on being the short one, capiche. He. Remains. Small.
So because of that when lying next to each other, you are probably face-to-face most of the time.
It is...bothersome. Thorfinn can't turn away nor look anywhere else when your face is right there.
He might even tell you so since he cant see anything with your mug right in front of his face when he has to keep watch. You offer to make yourself small and it inevitably leads...to you nuzzling into his neck (or chest if you hunch real small. Your back is gonna hurt in the morning though). The young man supposes it's better than nothing. The only way even perhaps.
He keeps a hand on the back of your head to keep you from moving and blocking his sight. Does not help when he feels your warm breath hit his neck.
You are either both asleep, or you switch, nudging the other awake to keep watch.
If it is Thorfinn, well, lucky him. He definitely can't sleep when you are cuddled up to him like that...though he tries to see it as something useful. He won't ever fall asleep while on watch and neither would he get any nightmares when he's awake.
Especially if you snore.
But perhaps you don't snore. You talk in your sleep instead.
It could be about anyhting; A dream, nightmare, a memory, family, your past, something that just happened a day ago. It depends on you if Thorfinn is familiar with it.
He'd stare, not knowing what to do. As long as it isn't anything that causes you to panic, he lets you sleep. Having no choice, he probably must listen to your rambles, wether or not you both like it.
If he hears anything personal, he won't mention it in the morning. You didn't mean to spill any beans, it just happened.
If you seem to be in discomfort, oh boy, does he not know what to do. Thorfinn might try to rub your back and he might try to pat your head but if it doesn't work, he shakes you awake. No use if you panic in your sleep right next to him.
He tells you of your discomfort but wouldn't know what to do afterwards. You can either try to sleep again or take over watch...
[too...many...thorfinn thoughts...overtaking...my...brain...not good...

To Soften a Warrior's Heart (Vinland Saga; Thorfinn; Part 2)
Tumblr media
In which you have joined Askeladd's band...and grow closer to the Son of Thors. Though it is more difficult than anyone can could ever imagine...
[Headcanons of how it would be like to meet and crawl your way into Thorfinn's heart (based on season 1; both platonic and romantic)]
Part 1 is here - meeting Thorfinn at the age of 14 and how he is at that age
Part 3 is here - Thorfinn slowly feeling comfortable with you and considering you a friend
Part 4 is here - Thorfinn unwittingly opening his heart as he realizes he does not want you to die
Part 5.1 is here - sweet things Thorfinn would do for you (headcanons)
Part 5.2 is here - other sweet things Thorfinn would do for you (headcanons)
Part 6 is here - Becoming Canute's guard while Thorfinn accepts your relationship and bond
Part 7 is here - Canute grieving over Ragnar and Thorkell catching up; Thorfinn leaves you alone for revenge
Part 8 is here - Thorfinn wins against Thorkell; Questioning your bond with Thorfinn
Part 9 is here - Meeting Leif and Thorfinn dueling Askeladd; Losing while Askeladd told him the truth of his constant losses
Part 10 is here - Thorfinn and you bound by heart; Promises of Vinland broken and abandoned
Part 2 of this or whatever you can call this brainrot just smacked onto a plate;;;;;
Part 1 consisted of meeting young 14 year old Thorfinn and your new and cold relationship with him at the beginning. Now...meeting Thorfinn and the band when he was 16 to 17 years old:
[Mentions of murder, death, war, slave trade, violence against women and whatever awful things happened in the viking era. Only mentioned and used as examples. Mostly gender-neutral examples but female-leaning ones are there, too.]
Harsh beginnings (16-17 years old):
I differentiate Thorfinn between the age of 14 and 16/17 since I believe there is a slight difference between his character growth during that time.
Younger Thorfinn, while brutal and definitely not innocent, is unwittingly open to help people in the most effortless way possible (through verbal warnings) to those he sees as bystanders (but not necessarily innocent) and to those that are kind to him and in general, including you.
It happens unwittingly since he unconsciously desires a bit of an positive connection due to humans being social creatures.
Compared to his older self, he is more childish and irrational, barking out petty insults that are more infantile than anything for his age. He pouts, he shoves and as any preteen, needs to have a comeback for every comment about and to him, no matter if those were negative or not.
Due to his lack of experience he is indecisive about what the 'right' choices are or what a true warrior is. So he is mostly quiet in these situations and instead observes what you would do/are doing.
TLDR: Younger Thorfinn acts like the kid of the mom your parent is friends with and you are forced to hang out. Except out of all choices...you are the one he can tolerate the most.
Now with an older Thorfinn however...
Things would most likely be the same as mentioned in part 1 except it is more likely that Thorfinn will completly ignore you if he doesn not have a reason to interact with you.
There will be a few questions of 'What are you doing here?' and 'Pah. What does that bastard Askeladd see in you?' thrown here and there but only to sate his brief curiousity. Afterwards, you aren't important enough to think about.
Again, your reasons for joining do not matter. Thorfinn wouldn't even wonder that much why a kid his age is part of the viking band now. He might not even ask you anything regarding your young age. He wouldn't care.
Someone like you...couldn't ever become like the warrior his father was. No one can.
If you join and are female, then he'd certainly raise a brow. Most of the members would.
Right then and there, in front of you, Thorfinn might even loudly ask Askeladd what he is thinking recruiting some woman. What kind of use is she going to be? You certainly can offer nothing that could make one a warrior.
It is not meant to truly insult you but he isn't worried about your well-being either. It simply doesn't make any sense to him. At worst, he might see you as a liability.
Again, Askeladd as the leader has a good reason to take you with him. No matter if it is strength, wit, knowledge or certain skills and in due time when you get the opportunity to show your talent off, Thorfinn will inevitably acknowledge it too. Silently though, without letting you know - or anyone for that matter.
Would he be impressed? Maybe, maybe not. That is something only for him to know.
As you can see, older Thorfinn is much more crueler and less worried about others. If helping you doesn't earn him another duel with Askeladd, then don't ever expect him to lend a hand.
On the battlefield, things would be the same when he was a bit younger. Complaining to Askeladd that you shouldn't be paired up with him and that he doesn't need help. In fact, he can do it alone. In fact, you would be a liability.
The more often things work out, the less Thorfinn will complain but it would not change the fact that he does like to work alone. He's more used to it and more comfortable that way.
(If you mess up and get away with your life though...uh oh...)
Thorfinn now is much more reversed and temperamental but will only lash out when truly angered. You can criticize him as much as you want but you'll only get a silent scowl out of him before he decides you aren't worth his time. You can only anger him when bringing up Askeladd or his father. (You don't want to do that though).
The childishness has been buried away and while the men would still see him as bratty, he isn't that anymore either. Pondering alone to himself in the corner while cleaning his dagger, even eerily quiet as he kills his enemies. The only expression he bears is that of an hollow glare. Thorfinn truly becomes less and less human and more like a beast, killing on command. It's frightening and therefore hard to even have a conversation with him.
The only times he answers is when he finds it necessary. And then they are only insults thrown at you and others.
His younger self at least tried. Now, he doesn't see any reason to anymore. Not with these fools who are enchanted by battle as if it were a siren, causing chaos as they go. Not with the murderer of his father looking at him like he can see through him. The only thing he has left is his revenge.
Now...*rubbing my hands all disgustingly* Time...to crAWL YOUR WAY INTO HIS HEART
Open your heART THORFINN:
As a heads up, I believe certain things would have to happen to both younger Thorfinn and older Thorfinn for him to even be able to open his heart to anyone in any capacity.
All of these scenarios work well for both age ranges I think, and therefore can be applied to both of them :)
Dog eat dog world...
You must have been on the band for a month by now, maybe a few more. So much so that Thorfinn realizes that you aren't annoying, greedy or a threat, giving him therefore no reason to really be on guard while near you. He is, after all, stronger than you, than anyone really (in his mind anyway. He can't say the same when it comes to Askeladd though).
He'll ignore you like always if he has no reason to speak to you and retreats to his corner on the boat, cleaning his dagger.
You're used to it, sometimes glancing at him with an keen eye but refusing to talk. It would be pointless with him anyway.
An accident or a raid of some sort happens while on sea. It could be a bad storm or other vikings, maybe even a fight on board right then and there - it doesn't really matter how it happens, it matters that there is havoc on the ship and that Thorfinn is being involved.
He is ruthless and bold as always, doing what he can to save his own skin even as he stumbles due to his quick temper. He falls but quickly gets up, not noticing he lost something...
Whatever the problem was, it has been solved and the skies are brighter again. The band slowly calms down with the sea and it was almost like nothing happened at all...if one were to ignore the damage and clutter on the ship, including how long this issue dwelled. A few oars floating away have to be get back as well as weapons and food supplies...
In the mess of it all, you find something familiar. Something that is only seen on Thorfinn...
The boy is, as always, back in his corner, collecting himself. Right before you approach him, he starts to snap his widened gaze everywhere, hands patting his legs up and down.
That's when the blonde looks up at you once you let out a rather direct greeting. Your fingers hold on to the tip of his father's blade with the handle facing Thorfinn as you offer it back to him.
In an blink of an eye he lunges forward to take it back from you, eyeing the weapon for any damage.
"...I see you always taking care of it," You say and Thorfinn snaps his gaze back to you, "So I thought it must be important to you."
...You stare at each other for a few seconds with Thorfinn's eyes wide open.
As you hear no reply, you turn around and go back to your usual spot, taking care of your own things.
Thorfinn wouldn't utter a word as his surprised expression morphed back to his usual scowl. Though there was a faint glint when he looked down on to the dagger. There were no thanks nor one of his scoffs.
It would be the first time anyone had done an act of kindness for him, at least here in the band. None of the men, even those who could know how dear the dagger is to Thorfinn, would ever do something like that for him. Only you did. You noticed it and returned to him without a second thought.
And as you haven't come back for any favors in return...it only made him ponder more.
It's the first genuine interaction you two had.
"I don't like to own anyone anything..."
A few days pass and it's like nothing happened at all. Thorfinn and you are still not on speaking terms. It's when the band stays on an small island or land to restock their food supplies (either through normal means or raiding a nearby village).
The standard for Askeladd's band is that 'everyone looks out for themselves' which includes hunting for survival. If you cannot wash someone else's hand, no one will wash yours.
As usual, you are on your own, finding yourself at the outskirts of a forest. The band doesn't think much of you and neither do you think much of them (Raiding and killing on sight is not something you're fond of, at least if it means finding a friend in Thorfinn. You can't really be like the men or Askeladd...and in their opinion you are too weak/soft/inexperienced/etc.)
Getting too deep into the forest is not a good idea either...a part of you thinks the moment Askeladd won't find you useful anymore, he'd leave you behind without hesitation. So here you are, trying to survive. The animals are hard to find, however...
The mere sound of rustling has you snapping around and pointing your bow at the source of it. Before you know it, Thorfinn stands before you with that familiar glare. He moves his arm and shows you the dead rabbit he had thrown over his shoulder. With a quick movement, he outstretched his arm holding the rabbit by its ears, the body hanging limply. He even removed the arrow from its neck and cleaned up the blood form the fur.
"Can't even hunt a bunny?" He tugged at the body one more time while staring at you - "Take it already." He grunted. You felt like he would've thrown it at your feet hadn't you taken it into your arms (which yes, he totally would have).
"Now we're even." Thorfinn turns away and walks further into the forest.
You can barely remember why you are 'even' in the first place but take the prey nonetheless.
Little do you know that your gesture stayed in Thorfinn's mind these past days. You didn't even know that dagger belonged to his father and it bothered him greatly - and in order to get rid of this feeling as soon as possible, he thought of 'returning the favor', no matter in what capacity it needed to be done.
...Not that you needed to know the details.
...Ever since then, you'd often return favors. Give and take. He washed your hand while you washed his.
Survival of the fittest...
This kind of play would go on between the two of you. He'd do something for you, you'd do something for him and vice versa - including agreeable, even amicable conversations here and there. Out of every conversation partner he could have, Thorfinn found you the most pleasant and for you the feeling was mutual.
The rest consisted of Askeladd, Björn and the other men to be honest...if they weren't loudmouthed, they were greedy and if they weren't greedy, they were bloodthirsty. Looking for fights, letting each other down or straight up acting 'non-warrior-like' in Thorfinn's eyes (though he keeps that to himself).
Everything was fine for now. This businesswise relationship with someone as...agreeable as Thorfinn (as long as it didn't include Askeladd, you learned that early on) made the viking life a bit easier. It was only after a job you all took where things took a turn.
Askeladd (or rather everyone but him) was tasked to support the conquest of an fortress. Unfortunately, the baron who tasked you did not mention the few prisoners plagued by sickness still residing in the dungeon...it was expected that they have already died or would perish during the conquest.
It was easy to do so with Thorfinn on their side. The fortress was theirs and the prisoners killed during the battle...yet Thorfinn had to pay the price for going in and murdering them.
The boy got terribly sick, so much so that during the band's stay, Thorfinn was forced to be secluded in an abandoned hut. Everyone feared it would be similiar to a plague, though Askeladd reassured many (by telling them they're paranoid idiots).
You'd often glance towards the hut, noting how cold it must be getting better there all on your own. Even though you kept that thought to yourself, Askeladd came to you one day with a sac of medicine and herbs, dropping it into your palms and telling you to take care of the stubborn fool.
How peculiar that the leader went out of his way to buy remedies for the boy who keeps trying to kill him. You raise a brow but the man waves you off and says you're the only one with enough brains to take care of somebody else. Thorfinn wouldn't let anyone else near him anyway.
So there you were, gingerly entering and seeing the blonde lay on his side, sweating bullets and breathing heavily. Thank goodness there are no marks, patterns or...whatever else a plague could be, you thought. Carefully you approached him but Thorfinn seemed too sick to even notice.
It felt strange. Day by day visiting him for hours, taking care of him while the boy can barely let out any refusals. He wouldn't butt heads, only glare at you through squinted, unfocused eyes. Each day he got better but Askeladd would usher you to hurry the hell up. He doesn't have enough time to wait, get the boy up on his feet.
Both of you were oddly quiet. You mostly talked to him by giving him orders how to sit, how to drink, to cover himself with the blanket. You'd tell him beforehand what you'd do (not that you want a sick guy swing his dagger at you, as best as he could anyway) and Thorfinn would stay quiet and have you guide him. He was too weak.
Perhaps it is the mere order of your leader that you're following, maybe it is actual kindness, maybe you want another favor or you're doing it out of pity. All that Thorfinn can even recognize in his state is how awfully gentle you are handling him. You are acting like he is made out of fragile glass that you cannot bear to chip. Carefully and softly your hands are healing him and after a few days he can finally talk. He'd ask you what you're doing with a raise of his brow (and coughs inbetween) and if your answer is simple or always the same, he'd let it go. The blonde just wants to get better.
Bonus points if he starts having fever dreams of Thors. Having little glimpses of peaceful times before they are ripped apart by arrows raining down the cliffs. Thorfinn might toss and turn, mumble in his sleep for it to stop. You don't know what to do, you don't know what he's talking about so you shake him awake - again and again and again until he finally wakes up.
Might be ripped away from his dreams by threatening you with the tip of his dagger at your throat or him grabbing a fistful of your shirt and hanging onto it. Bonus points again if you're holding a meal and it falls on the both of you. Either way Thorfinn is too distraught and unfocused to even realize his actions. Slowly, ever so slowly he lets go and retreats his weapon. You're staring wide-eyed, just like him, and neither of you say anything.
...You are carefully placing him back down and are making your leave. "Eat your meal. I'll be back soon." You say as if nothing happened. Thorfinn glances between you and part of the meal you could save, his brain struggling to really digest what had just happened.
Once he did, you were already gone to clean the food off you. You didn't even scream in pain from the heat but saved his food instead. The boy doesn't even know that as he eats it.
Alright, maybe you cursed at him, shoved the dagger away or are snitching to Askeladd that you won't be taking care of that giant baby anymore - whatever you decided to do, you still chose to save his food and tend to him.
With everyone back on the ship and Thorfinn only plagued by a few coughs, everything seemed back to normal. The boy needs a few days to truly digest all that you did for him (maybe even Björn or Askeladd shove their filthy fingers into the wound and mock him for it - which only worsens his mood) and it bothers him greatly. You can't imagine it!
He'd stare at you silently, no matter on ship or land, and will not even bother asking you anymore why you did that. (Part of you fears he's fuming at you for...whatever it is you did??? Dude you just tried to save his life).
One early morning where you two are alone and far away he will approach you with his usual pout. You seriously start to think he's gonna start a fight at worst. Instead he yells out: "You didn't have to do that. You don't need to do anything for me anymore. Even when the baldy bastard orders you to."
You stare at him dumbfounded, blinking at the claim. Thorfinn cannot express his thanks. Not genuine gratitude for a selfless act, he's not used to it anymore. You turn to him and glare as well.
"You could've died." That's all you say and it leaves his stumbling. He hasn't thought about that but you're right. He clams up and you two are just staring each other for a while.
Finally he leaves with frustration. "You don't have to do this anymore." Is all he says.
You don't hear much from him afterwards. Even your conversations are seldom and cut short now, the blonde not being able to look you in the eye for long.
Until one day during an attack, the axe that was aimed to your back never came. You spun around, eyes shot open and alert from the adrenaline you see the soldier stabbed down by Thorfinn. He meets your gaze for a split second before you both continue defending your lifes. It was over quickly and you turn back to the boy, watching him as he cleans the blood off his dagger.
And yet again, he saves you, silently so however, as he never speaks when he kills. That doesn't surprise you but Thorfinn is being so thorough and fast as he ends the lifes of those that target you. Not that he goes out of his way - only when you happen to be near. It's still the first time he ever helped anyone and that person is you.
Finally, you addressed it. You took his chances to escape or scoff you off, grabbing ahold of his arm (that he doesn't answer with the tip of his blade).
As awkward as the conversation is, Thorfinn listens. Saying your thanks - to which he only waves them off - you also let him know how he doesn't need to believe he's in your debt. What is done is done...and what matters was avoiding unnecesary deaths.
"...Just be careful from now on. I'll be too." The awkwardness was ended with a small whisper. Thorfinn didn't know what to think of it. He couldnt decide if you seemed sad, annoyed or tired. But what he noted was how soft and gentle you were. Again.
"You're really strange."
You eye him up and down for his behavior. Raising a brow at your claim the blonde scoffed right after and went back his merry way.
Far in the west, there is a land...
You slowly warm up to each other again.
It took some time but Thorfinn was able to shake off your comment from that day and was a bit more open to conversation now. If he noted something to help with or warn about, he'd tell you. If there was something you wanted, he would first listen. If you offer the slightest bit of aid, he'd consider it. Only you though.
Still, a warm presence would never distract the son of Thors from his real ambition. You had often witnessed his duels with the band's leader as well as his losses. It was one of the rare times the men would talk eagerly with you and make bets, things you weren't interested in (the winner was always clear anyway). You asked Björn once what this dueling to the death is all about but he never gave you the right answer.
Again, Thorfinn loses and sulkingly goes back to one of the ships while the rest were enjoying their feast at the hut of Askeladd's uncle. Night approached and the spring wind was awfully cold.
There might be a lot of reason why you left the warmth of the shelter. You were full and needed fresh air, the noise graited your ears, men harassed you and picked fights, you couldn't bear to watch that slave girl get abused or you really were worried about Thorfinn and brought him food.
He was dozing off before you approached. Perhaps he woke up from the scent, the creaking of your footsteps, your voice which grew familiar or, yet again, with a dagger at your throat.
He quickly withdrew at the latter though, don't worry.
Watching him locate his shoulder again, hunching in his blanket, you asked if you could sit on the boat too. It was better than being inside, you decided.
Your presence was no longer an annoyance but he wasn't in the mood to talk. He did eat the food though.
The silence was tranquil before a snap could be heard. That uncle had driven the girl outside, bashing her with a thick, wooden stick. She curled into a bawl, trying to keep her weeping low.
Even you could not bear such sights and hearings. With a scowl and a scoff you wished unfortune to befall this man. Thorfinn would speak up and soon a conversation would grow.
"Slavery is everywhere I guess. No matter how long you run...there will always be people who will see you as nothing but tools."
His brown eyes casted down at your mellow comment. He paused for a moment before beginning quietly, as if it was a chant:
"Somewhere, far in the west, is a land named Vinland. It is always warm and the soil is fertile...where there are no slaves...and no slave drivers to find you..."
It is the first time Thorfinn sees your eyes widen with a glint.
Perhaps you have heard of this legend too...or maybe not but you are truly captured by it. You ask him to tell more.
It was fascinating to listen and even more so to watch you soak in every word. It is the first conversation you two have that isn't about mundane things like the sea, or venting about the other bandmates or talking about strategies when you were paired up in battle. Your words consisted of hope and dreams. Of better things.
"Where did you hear about such a land?" You asked almost innocently, too interested in its tale to even notice. Your companion halted for a second to catch his breath, contemplating if he should answer.
The pause was long but you didn't notice that either. "...From my father." He whispered and his grip on the dagger tightened.
It seemed like something in your head clicked. The hopeful glint in your eyes vanished as they widened and you snapped your gaze to his dagger - then the boat - then Thorfinn, who lost to the duel of the man he always loudly swore to kill. You shifted in your seat.
The silence was heavy but you didn't want it to be.
"...It would be nice to be in a place like that. Just...living there, you know? Not to be here with them anymore. Do you think that's possible?"
It was also the first time Thorfinn has seen you smile.
"You're really strange."
With a scoff, he throws your words back at you.
[Yooo, this guy has been living in my mind the entire time, I finished season 1 and qWHAT DO U MEAN THAT WAS THE "PROLOGUE"???? IM SO SCARED OF STARTING SEASON 2 I already cried at the s1 :(
There will be more parts that will follow s1 which will include other characters (Canute ;)) and you and Thorfinn becoming closer and...Im just sooo....hypnotized by this show I hope it doesnt break my heart hahaha]

A thing I wanted to add in TSAWH but decided against it: You slowly appearing in S1!Thorfinn's Vinland dreams
Writing to get obsessed about VS again
@luopenis , @jinsecho , @mitsureigen , @theknightssecrets
That was like...an idea that quickly died.
I wanted to have the reader slowly appear in Thorfinn's dreams about his father and vinland but thought that would be too much and would have Thorfinn think highly of the reader too quickly. It would ruin the slow burn.
Especially since these dreams are more about his relationship with his father and how they often end badly (I.e. Thors is killed).
As the two of you grow closer, Thorfinn would slowly start seeing you in his dreams. First as a silhouette in the distance, then much closer and at the Final stage interacting with him and his family in the dream.
He'd appear as a six year old boy as he remembers the good times in and you would appear in your current state and age of S1, minus wounds and weapons. Smiling much more.
You'd appear in your current form because Thorfinn cannot imagine you at his age since...he never met you as a kid! The youngest his mind can construct is your appereance when you two met for the first time.
You'd do anything but fight and wage war. If you told him of something you used to do in your past (I.e. "I often helped my mother shear the sheep".) Thorfinn would dream of you doing so, even with his family.
Thors would slowly introduce you as Thorfinn's 'friend' which the little guy would immediately, vehemently deny. You arent friends! Foxi and the other kids are but not you!
Grown-ups don't play with kids! Ylva doesn't, so you wouldn't play with him either >:/
But Thors would convince him that you are his friend. How you take care of each other, how you protect one another and share food together.
He'd refer to all the things happening in the waking world.
Little kid Thorfinn would pout and deny it all. Slowly, however, he'd warm up to the idea.
You are friends, right?
It'd be like a subconcious desire of Thorfinn that grows in time, to be with you and his family in a peaceful place, and is reflected by his dreams as well as Thors not wanting his son to be alone and forget kindness.
But that felt like cheating lol. Like, he'd grow to like you through his dreams? Nah, he gotta do it himself, grind and hustle in the real world.

TSAWH - Askeladd's and Canute's impression of You
just a little brainrot since I've been wanting to write something more easy and lowkey
What Askeladd and Canute think of you male and female version TW: mentions of slavery and misogyny
Askeladd:
The man does not raise a brow at another young man joining his little band. He is already used to small brats thanks to Thorfinn so another one hopping in does not take the leader off guard at all.
He would, however, be intrigued by your attempts to befriend Thorfinn, involuntarily or not which can be either a good idea or a bad one. He does not really care what happens to you as long as you can fulfill his role as his chess piece. Still, part of him would be glad and perhaps even relieved to have Thorfinn find a friend in you. Vikings all cooperarate for one single goal in mind that usually ends up only done for the gain of oneself and never for the other. There are no real bonds when killing and pillaging so it eases Askeladd when he sees your genuineness and...kindness.
Now, a man having a heart? A kind heart? That's looked down upon, especially when it isn't expected of an viking. You'd be called a coward and not a real man, which Askeladd cannot defend you against and would even go along with insulting you, too, sometimes meaning and at times exeggarating for the sake of not being the sore thumb sticking out. Askeladd blames it first on you being young and simply wanting a friend but he mulls whether or not you might also be craving normalcy in this brutal world. You kill and take but are kind and considerate in a way that no one else here is for his peer. It's hypocritical but...relieving.
You both are young. Don't end up like him.
Another thing that is so relieving to see is the genuineness in all words and actions that he spies on you two exchanging. You accept Thorfinn and his thirst for revenge yet are not like him at all. Is that truly what a bond looks like? He doesn't know. All he knows is that the closest thing to a friend he has is Björn and he even he does not know everything about Askeladd - everything that he is - and would most likely not accept him like you are to the small blonde. Björn only clings to him, looks up to him because having another one like him makes him feel powerful. Misery loves company but it is too one-sided to truly feel like a friendship where vulnerability can bloom.
He doesn't have that but you do. And he envies it.
However, a woman being his bandmate? Hah! What are the odds?
As amusing as the sight all is, Askeladd secretely strongly dislikes you being here. Stupid girl, don't you know how utterly dangerous it is to be around such abhorrent Nordics? Barbarians that would not have an ounce of empathy in their cold, decayed hearts if something happened to you and if they are the perperators? You really think you stand a chance in this cruel world of vikings?
He'd often subtly throw you lines to discourage you and have you end up leaving for good. Go ahead, risk a life of slavery! Just go back from where you came from, to people who care about you, live a normal and peaceful life and then die there and not here on the battlefield! Askeladd genuinely believes you will just end up as fodder, as a corpse left to rot in a river, anything, anything that is below than whatever else vikings will face at the end. It is inevitable that you will suffer a worse fate even if no one knows what it might be.
And yet, he does not directly kick you out. You have a role after all that you need to fulfill as his chess piece and no matter how often he thinks that just tomorrow you might regret your decision of joining him or how often you remind him of his mother, the leader will not ever just let you go. His plan is too important and you are a valuable tool. He gets angry at how his own bandmates speak of women but he does throw out his morals and views to endanger you without hesitation. A hypocrit.
Well, at least Thorfinn keeps you safe - but even there he is a hypocrit. He does not believe that this dumbass of a kid truly understands how important it is to protect you and how he must do it - even when Askeladd is the one endangering you time and time again! In Askeladd's mind, Thorfinn does not enough, especially in any clever way, so he will also throw advice to him clad as insults. A true man must be ready to cut down anyone and anything to keep his loved one safe, betray any father and half-brothers and sail across the ocean to dig her grave in her home. Anything less is an offense and if the kid truly swears to want you by his side, then he better do everything better Askeladd had ever done for his mother.
Canute:
A man such as you is rare - or rather, peculiar. You kill but do not raid, you share companionship with the biggest brute he has ever seen and even though you have been ordered to guard him, you do so with genuine concern over his well-being. Even if it is pity as he feared, your behavior is still strange. No other viking would do so.
This leads to Ragnar being wary of you and therefore telling Canute to be wary as well. A man does not smile at royalty like this, there must be an underlying motivation. Blackmail, trickery, his own very plan to take him hostage, you name it. But Canute cannot believe it all. A strong person like you offering your hand with a smile while protecting him so dearly...it leaves him rather flustered. You are so capable it makes him think that your behavior is akin to that of an leader. Askeladd certainly got the brains for one but you hold a genuine worry over someone like him - someone you see as weaker and innocent probably but even so, he will take your outstretched hand. For none other looked at him like that but Ragnar, the only other man knowing love. Perhaps as a future leader, he should follow your example? It makes him yearn to be like you.
The prince would definitely make a face when he sees Thorfinn, with his thunderous glare and pout, and next to him stands a young woman. He'd definitely be more surprised here as well as Ragnar, but would not have the guts to question it. Instead, he sits in his corner and glimpses from the corner of his eye and slits of his helmet at you. He's seen vikings but not women being one of them. It leaves him curious but frightened. However, as soon as you save him as his knight does his entire opinion of you change. You become somewhat of an enigma but Canute throws all questions on why a person such as you even works for Askeladd and solely focuses on the soft kindness you've shown him. Like a lovesick boy he gains a temporary infatuation with you, connecting your sweet actions with that of the femininity you posses and might go overboard on what he imagines you to be versus who you truly are - it's nothing dangerous though. Little prince is no threat to anything yet, so he just looks up to you as something kind and loving. Something he wishes everyone was.

When will you be continuing the slave arc for Vinland saga?
Currently in WIP and so is the next chapter for Ticking Springs (Lies of P). But I'll probably focus on the latter first.
Feel free to flood me with VS and Thorfinn to reignite my obsession 👀

Yo! I have this regarding Thorfinn and reader and bro when I tell you I fell in love with your writing. I DID. I FELL HARD. You write Thorfinn so accurately and I thought it was beautiful aswell as how you wrote canute but like I said I got this random thought in my head
What if we get a poly relationship or friendship between Thorfinn Canute and reader, what doy ou think it would be like and how do you think it will start and how will be like? For me personally I like do little imagines that they all like eachother equally, bit of fighting here and there but even if it's not going to be an actual romantic relationship between the three I just like the thought of Thorfinn gaining his own little trio
I would like to hear your opinion on this one!
(It's oki if you ignore this<33 have a good day!!)
AAA almost forgot about this but it's always ok to ask things or to share your own takes!!!
Sob sob you fell in love???? 😭😭🥰🥰 thank you so much! I do hope I will be able to continue having people fall so hard they can't get up
Ngl I do pat myself on the shoulder for writing Thorfinn in character (only cuz I am so obsessed I have to understand him 👁👄👁) but it makes me happy that Canute is seen like that, too!
Hm, I never thought of poly relationships but I think for it to start (and Thorfinn having an Trio is super cute, especially if its chaotic) I think it works best when Thorfinn and Reader are still Canute's guards. HOWEVER they'd have to do more than just travel (find themselves in shenanigans) AND Ragnar would have to be away a lot. The man is a massive mother hen who would not allow Canute to grow, let alone speak to the other two on his own.
For the vibe I'd say it's similiar to Spongebob, Patrick and Sandy (with Canute switching between Sandy, the voice of reason and Spongebob, who curiously goes along with Patrick's plans).
Thorfinn is 100% Patrick with his stupid ideas 😭 his overconfidence in his intelligence and strength causes him to think he's better than anyone. He thinks ALL the choices he makes are the best for Reader and Canute but no, no they're not. And when someone points it out that no, he's dumb, he's like "the inner machinations of my mind are an enigma" -> gets beaten to a pulp by Askeladd
And meek Canute just goes with it cuz he don't know better 😭 or he's like I've got no choice I have to trust these idiots to keep me safe
After his awakening he'd wake up as Sandy with an actual mind and thinking for himself. He'd often chastises the both of you for your poor decision-making.
And Reader definetely switches between Spongebob and Sandy too. Either they talk Thorfinn out of stupid things and get him outta trouble or just goes along with it completely because they trust him so much and are like 'do it or die - all with Thorfinn, my bestie!' while talking Canute into it too with the promise that they will look out for him.
It's just
Thorfinn does stupid and reckless thing -> Reader joins and drags Canute with them-> Canute cries not wanting to be there and tries to be the voice of reason
Or
Thorfinn does reckless stuff-> Reader gets mad and chastises him for it, makes better plan -> like a child of divorce Canute looks between them and just tries to get along with the best thing and wants to please both of them.
