Deus Ex in Yuletide 2022

Did I mentioned the Deus Ex series is nominated in this year's Yuletide fic exchange too? And presumably there's at least a couple of others interested, because folks have nominated 14 different characters (and you can only nominated 4 each). My own request letter (assorted prompts, free to a good home!) is up over here.

night city never slept. and neither did angel. the doors to @tahlos ’s clinic busted open with a loud announcement. ❝ tal! i’ve arrived with food— something polish and something carribean from pepper and spice, the fancy restaurant i was telling you about. ❞ she was quick to make herself at home and plop down at his desk whilst he was busy across the room doing something else. their friendship over the course of time had developed into something deeper and richer. talos met her when someone was dropped off to his clinic half dead and trauma team was still a good distance away. angel was the first one to point a gun at him and tell him to step back despite not having any intention of hurting the man. she never knew why she developed such an interest in him. maybe it was because of his selfless and kind heart. something she rarely saw anymore in this cruel city. her eyes flicker to her arm which was littered with a few black marks — stim shots to keep her awake during the long nights of working two jobs. when was the last time she slept? at least two nights ago. she needed to sleep at some point tonight since tomorrow was her day off. otherwise the hallucinations would really start to kick in. ❝ cmon, old man, i know you haven’t eaten yet. i know you have the long shift tonight. ❞

Jensen is willingly taking Rucker back to what he knows almost certainly to be Illuminati controlled black site prison, basically. A non-violent civil rights leader from a Warsaw ghetto analogue. Jensen has got to know that “questioning” is not going to be all that happens to Rucker.  He can't possibly be stupid enough to believe that Illuminati controlled TF will treat Rucker justly. so what the hell does he expect to happen? is rucker just a casualty of his investigation as a Collective spy? does Jensen intend to white knight the situation somehow and protect Rucker? Or did the devs just trust that rucker dying makes any such questions moot?

If Jensen just took a calculated risk of Rucker dying for the sake of his agent cover not getting blown, I could buy it. But it really ought to be discussed in the game. he could present his doubts or resentment about having to go on this mission, or on the other missions, maybe to vega or something.

MANDERLEY, you rat bastard. Deliver the Orchid indeed. (I mean, I knew it, but gah. Also, he signs his emails to Miller the same way, you find that out later, and has a similar tone. Though I’m just there when Miller gets pissed off at Adam being cagey, going, “You have kept a bunch of stuff from him due to respect for chain of command, and also he just found a well dodgy email signed ‘JM’ right after Rucker got poisoned while talking about someone outside ARC manipulating things. What do you expect?!”)

Random parallel that didn’t occur to me first time round because I didn’t have all the facts: Rucker and Miller. Both quietly trying to weed out corruption in their own organisations, both sold down the river by Manderley, both were trying to make a start with an organisation that could help people and cut through red tape, both (vaguely, to a point) pacifist types, both Orchid-poisoned.

Also, to quote Jensen’s mission notes: “Miller seemed legitmately upset at Rucker’s death.” Yup. (I think deep down, some part of him wanted to believe. In augs, or in peace, at least, if not in Rucker.)

now that I am reminded of it and also dreamt of Deus Ex MD, Talos Rucker's prophetic and theatrealic way of speaking really spoke to me. "there is still so many things I have to do", that burden of carrying a part of humanity, that responsibility, that mind and the dedication to it while yet being somehow unable to do it resonated with me deeply.
