'Writer and poet Benjamin Zephaniah has died aged 65, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour eight weeks ago.
A statement posted on his Instagram account confirmed he died in the early hours of Thursday.
The statement said Zephaniah's wife "was with him throughout and was by his side when he passed".
"We shared him with the world and we know many will be shocked and saddened by this news," it added.
Zephaniah was born and raised in Handsworth, Birmingham, the son of a Barbadian postman and a Jamaican nurse. He was dyslexic and left school aged 13, unable to read or write.
He moved to London aged 22 and published his first book, Pen Rhythm.
His early work used dub poetry, a Jamaican style of work that has evolved into the music genre of the same name, and he would also perform with the group The Benjamin Zephaniah Band.
As Zephaniah's profile grew, he became a familiar face on television and was credited with bringing Dub Poetry into British living rooms.
He also wrote five novels as well as poetry for children, and his first book for younger readers, Talking Turkeys, was a huge success upon its publication in 1994.
On top of his writing work, Zephaniah was an actor and appeared in the BBC drama series Peaky Blinders between 2013 and 2022.
He played Jeremiah "Jimmy" Jesus, appearing in 14 episodes across the six series.
Zephaniah famously rejected an OBE in 2003 due to the association of such an honour with the British Empire and its history of slavery.
"I've been fighting against empire all my life, fighting against slavery and colonialism all my life," he told The Big Narstie Show in 2020.
"I've been writing to connect with people, not to impress governments and monarchy. So I could I then accept an honour that puts the word Empire on to my name? That would be hypocritical.
He often spoke out about issues such as racial abuse and education.
When he was younger, Zephaniah served a prison sentence for burglary and received a criminal record.
In 1982, Zephaniah released an album called Rasta, which featured the Wailers' first recording since the death of Bob Marley.
It also included a tribute to the then-political prisoner Nelson Mandela, who would later become South African president.
In an interview in 2005, Zephaniah said growing up in a violent household led to him assuming that was the norm.
He recalled: "I once asked a friend of mine, 'What do you do when your dad beats your mum?' And he went: 'He doesn't.'
"I said, 'Ah, you come from one of those, like, feminist houses. So, what do you do when your mum beats your dad?'"
In 2012, he was chosen to guest edit an edition of BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
Zephaniah was nominated for autobiography of the year at the National Book Awards for his work, The Life And Rhymes Of Benjamin Zephaniah, which was also shortlisted for the Costa Book Award in 2018.
During a Covid-19 lockdown, Zephaniah recited one of his poems in a video for the Hay Festival.
"Benjamin was a true pioneer and innovator. He gave the world so much," the statement announcing his death said.
"Through an amazing career including a huge body of poems, literature, music, television and radio, Benjamin leaves us with a joyful and fantastic legacy."
A statement from the Black Writers' guild, which Zephaniah helped establish, said: "Our family of writers is in mourning at the loss of a deeply valued friend and a titan of British literature. Benjamin was a man of integrity and an example of how to live your values."
Others paying tribute included author Michael Rosen, who said: "I'm devastated. I admired him, respected him, learnt from him, loved him. Love and condolences to the family and to all who loved him too."
Actress Adjoa Andoh posted: "We have lost a Titan today. Benjamin Zephaniah. Beautiful Poet, Professor, Advocate for love and humanity in all things. Heartbroken. Rest In Your Power - our brother."
Peaky Blinders actor Cillian Murphy said in a statement: "Benjamin was a truly gifted and beautiful human being.
"A generational poet, writer, musician and activist. A proud Brummie and a Peaky Blinder. I'm so saddened by this news."
Broadcaster Trevor Nelson said: "So sad to hear about the passing of Benjamin Zephaniah. Too young, too soon, he had a lot more to give. He was a unique talent."
Singer-songwriter and musician Billy Bragg added: "Very sorry to hear this news. Benjamin Zephaniah was our radical poet laureate. Rest in power, my friend."
Comedian, actor and writer Lenny Henry said: "I was saddened to learn of the passing of my friend Benjamin Zephaniah. His passion for poetry, his advocacy for education for all was tireless."
Writer Nels Abbey said: "To call this crushing news is a massive understatement. He was far too young, far too brilliant and still had so much to offer. A loss we'll never recover from."
The X/Twitter account for Premier League football club Aston Villa, whom Zephaniah supported said everyone at the club was "deeply saddened" by the news.
"Named as one of Britain's top 50 post-war writers in 2008, Benjamin was a lifelong Aston Villa fan and had served as an ambassador for the AVFCFoundation. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."'

1 January 2024
By Doug Faulkner, BBC News
The UK marked the beginning of 2024 with fireworks, street parties, and a message of inclusivity as people celebrated across Britain.
As Big Ben struck, midnight drones lit up the London sky with the message "London, a place for everyone," before a vibrant firework display began.
About 100,000 people gathered to watch the 15-minute spectacular in the city.
In Scotland, Britpop band Pulp performed as thousands braved the cold to mark Hogmanay.
There was also a fireworks display as Edinburgh marked its 30th year of the celebrations, while there was a mass ceilidh staged in Inverness.
London's display included more than 12,000 fireworks, 600 drones, and 430 lights.
It quoted Shakespeare heard from the King and also paid homage to the NHS, which celebrated 75 years in 2023.
A quote from King Charles III was used to mark the 75th anniversary of the Windrush crossing in which he said new arrivals "collectively enrich the fabric of our national life."
Further messages throughout the show were heard from Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Dame Helen Mirren, Bella Ramsey, Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley, George the Poet, and Baroness Floella Benjamin, who read a poem by the late Benjamin Zephaniah.
The celebration continued with a New Year's Day parade, which started in Piccadilly at midday before making its way towards Westminster's Parliament Square.
Tumblr media
Several days of weather warnings did not put off revellers in Scotland with tens of thousands watching Edinburgh's firework display.
Visitors from more than 80 countries gathered in the city, while Pulp headlined a concert in Princes Street Gardens.
Following the fireworks, thousands continued to celebrate, singing Auld Lang Syne, and dancing.
Inverness was host to the Red Hot Highland Fling, described by organisers as "one of the biggest ceilidhs on the planet," where folk singer Siobhan Miller entertained partygoers up to midnight.
Later, hundreds of hardy swimmers are expected to brave the waters of the Firth of Forth as part of the annual Loony Dook — dook being a Scots word for dip or bathe.
People are encouraged to don fancy dress for the charity swim.
In Allendale, Northumberland, the annual Allendale Tar Bar'l ceremony was held.
The centuries-old tradition sees 45 local men carry burning whiskey barrels through the town.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before the celebrations, King Charles III and Queen Camilla waved to onlookers as they attended the New Year's Eve service at a church in Sandringham, Norfolk.
Ahead of giving his New Year message, the Archbishop of Canterbury urged politicians not to treat their opponents as enemies but as fellow human beings.
He told the BBC:
"Our capacity to disagree deeply and not destructively is cause for hope."
His message will be broadcast on BBC1 and iPlayer at 12:55 GMT.
In his New Year message, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hinted at tax cuts in an election year and said the UK should "look forward with pride and optimism."
He said his resolution would be to "keep driving forward."
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer used his message to say that while it had been "another tough year economically for millions of people, hope was the fuel of change."
Meanwhile, Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, renewed his party's call for electoral reform and appealed to "transform the nature of British politics for good."

Benjamin Zephaniah (April 15, 1958 - December 7, 2023) poet, playwright, novelist, and activist, was born the first of eight children, in Birmingham, England. He grew up in Wandsworth until the age of nine. He turned to writing, choosing to describe local and global issues, inspired by his Jamaican heritage and “street politics” of Birmingham. He left formal education at age 14 but built a reputation in the city as a popular dub poet, an art form that involves mixing the spoken word with reggae rhythms. He had a troubled adolescence, which was punctuated with periods of incarceration.
His first poetry collection Pen Rhythm was published. His poetry has been motivated by political stimuli: “The Dread Affair” is a critique of the British legal system, and “Rasta Time in Palestine” is a memoir of his visit to that area. His most recent volume We are Britain! reflects on the multicultural nature of the country. His live performance of this art has received tremendous acclaim.
He is a successful dub and reggae musician. His many recordings, “Us and Dem” and “Belly of de Beast” for example, exhibit his native identity and voice. During Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment “The Benjamin Zephaniah Band” recorded a song of solidarity for him which led to him working with children in South Africa. He has published poetry for children and novels for an adolescent audience. The themes explored in this work are racial: “Face” which addresses discrimination and “Refugee Boy” which follows a young protagonist fleeing conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
His “Dread Poet’s Society” was screened on British television and he was a winner of the BBC Young Playwriter’s Award with a contribution entitled “Hurricane Dub.” The successful radio play Listen to Your Parents saw him receive the Commission for Racial Equality’s drama award. In 2003 he controversially refused an Order of the British Empire. He has thirteen honorary doctorates.
After periods of living in Egypt, Yugoslavia, and South Africa, he divides his time between Beijing and Lincolnshire, England. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Press Release for My Dream Gig at 606 Jazz Club
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Loyle Carner at the 606 Jazz Club
We are excited to welcome rapper Loyle Carner to play at the 606 Jazz Club on the 6th October 2024. As the musician celebrates his 30th birthday he will take this time for a small, intimate gig with his biggest fans and family to recount his illustrious career through a mixture of songs and spoken word poetry. He will be supported by a live jazz band including Tom Misch on guitar and Jordan Rakei on keys, both long-time collaborators with Carner, and the rest of the band being filled by members of Ezra Collective.
Speaking to Loyle Carner about his plans for this event, he plans to make it a celebration of all the amazing music and opportunities he has been lucky to be a part of. He has an idea for a long show with a mixture of some instrumental versions of songs that inspired him, some spoken word interludes about his life and family, and some new unreleased music.
Loyle Carner has been releasing music since 2014 with his ep ‘A Little Late’. This led him to success in the mid to late 2010s as he was playing festivals and supporting acts like MF Doom, Nas and Joey Badass. His influences are wide-reaching, citing American hip-hop and British grime for his music and authors Benjamin Zephaniah and Langston Hughes for his lyricism. Carner brings a new energy to rap music and effortlessly blends samples from jazz, pop or even recordings of telephone conversations with his family into smooth beats that he raps over freely.
This gig will be unmissable as he reminisces on his earlier work and is supported by a live band instead of using backing tracks like at most of his gigs. Many of the artists that he has worked with who are forging their own way to critical acclaim will be there to support him, like Jorja Smith, Kofi Stone and Rejjie Snow. Guitarist Tom Misch has been working with Carner for years and they have both appeared as collaborators on many of each other’s tracks, Misch has appeared as a special guest at multiple performances for Carner and their chemistry is undeniable.
The 606 Jazz Club is a small, intimate venue and a far reach from the spaces that Carner usually performs in. This event gives fans a much closer view to feel connected to the music and as he is supported by a full band, it will be a unique experience to hear his songs being played by live musicians. The 606 Jazz Club rarely plays host to events like this, but this night will be magical.
Overall, there are many reasons why this gig will be special from the amazing musicianship that will be on show to the wild birthday celebrations that will occur afterwards, it is a once in a lifetime performance.

What say you on the subject of 'Gangsta Rap' by Benjamin Zephaniah?
added to TBR | on my TBR | couldn’t finish it | did not enjoy | it was OK | liked it | loved it | favourite | not interested
I don’t read a lot of YA, so I’d never heard of this one before! I love books set in London, and books about teens getting together to form a band (a la The Commitments) so it could be interesting…

Dunstan Bruce on returning to music
Tumblr media
Early this year something wondrous and perfectly formed appeared in our midst...the Interrobang album had been released! If you haven’t heard it yet that’s several months of your life that have been musically poorer than they needed to be-get to it! Interrobang are like a wonderful cocktail that includes hints of The Jam, Gang of Four, Pulp and Blur while always maintaining their own distinct sound. Intelligent, witty, self aware lyrics embedded in vivid, cleverly textured and shaped musical landscapes that always enhance what’s being said. You can tell that this is a band that have spent time thinking about, honing, road testing this collection of lean, perfectly delivered songs. Ego-less collaboration, not an easy thing to find. Dunstan Bruce, Stephen Griffin and Harry Hamer have created a work of art that honestly and courageously explores the experience of being a 50 something dissident still bothered about the inequality and injustice they see around them, ”I’m sick to death of being told to keep calm, no danger of that happening any time soon, I’m angry, still angry after all these years, I’ll never calm down, never ever” (‘Mad as Hell’), still with a sharp mind but, disconcertingly, a waning body, ”…I’ve been privately browsing middle aged concerns, and I’ve been googling the 50 something blues…I’ve been denying existential truths and I’ve been ignoring hashtag cancerous news…” (‘Asking For a Friend’). The overtly political and those aspects of life often considered more personal (although of course the ‘personal’ occurs in, and is affected by, a social/political context) are kept in perfect balance as the album engages with the wide gamut of life (and death, both of a parent and the contemplation of one’s own) including apprehension of the next milestone   “I’m in a car wash and frankly I’m terrified…what’s gonna happen when I hit 60, will I still be hungry, will I still be angry, and will I still have the energy?” (‘Breathe’),  As he had spent some time out of music between Chumbawumba and Interrobang I was intrigued to ask Dunstan Bruce how in retrospect the whole experience of returning to music, being in a band, releasing an album and touring again had gone...   Interrobang formed in 2012 and the album was released in 2018, in that time were you conscious that you were engaged in a valuable process of perfectly realising a vision and there were no shortcuts? That’s a long gestation period isn’t it? We obsessed over this album, this project, this labour of love. The last thing we wanted to do was pour our heart and soul into this and watch it go out with a whimper not a bang. We spent a long time developing the songs, getting them tighter, more economical, more less-is-more-ish, honed into incredible little gems. And then life comes along and distracts you, kicks you in the balls, knocks you sideways. So you put everything on hold and then when you’re ready you throw yourself back in. This was too precious to us all. I was reading a couple of interviews you gave (1,2), in them you mention that the album has been gestating, at least lyrically, for about 8 years, how did you feel as the launch day approached?  There has been a wonderful feeling of validation, of purpose, of value. It was a massive step for me lyrically, baring my soul, letting the world in, sharing my confessional. I had hit a point where my ability to communicate with the outside world had almost ground to a halt. Where I was incapable of expressing an emotion, where I embraced curmudgeon as an affectation rather than an affliction. It was a dark and lonely place. So I approached it with trepidation. And a glorious feeling that I was taking a leap again. It was exhilarating and terrifying. I had butterflies. I loved it. The album has been really well received!! Were you surprised by how many people completely 'got it'? I’d got wind that people were digging what we were doing from the gigs. Middle aged men coming up to me after a show and sharing their own stories about their difficult relationships with their dads, about feeling invisible, about never giving up. I discovered it was a common experience that I had gone through. Talking about stuff like that at a gig rather than at some men’s group was incredibly rewarding. Without the rarefied atmosphere, but just that visceral shared experience it was easy to talk and to share. The album speaks to those of us who are wondering what dissent looks like when you are 50 something but it also explores mortality, relationships and the fear that one is fading into irrelevance. Did you find it difficult to write so honestly, did it feel vulnerable or did it feel a like necessary catharsis? There’s no guarantee that something like this was going to bring me any sort of love, peace or understanding but it certainly did. Catharsis, yes. definitely that. It cleansed my system. I kind of re-booted myself. I opened up. It was scary and I felt incredibly self-conscious at times. Even just bringing those words to the rehearsal room - a safe environment – I felt exposed. But part of getting to my age was that front part of my brain loosening up, that bit that says stop being so uptight, let it out, don’t give a fuck, that part just let go. I’m 57. What have I got to lose? This is my one go at this; I decided not to waste it any more. So weirdly now I feel like a bit of a fraud getting up in stage being that character who wrote those words. I’m not quite sure that’s me any more. Cliched I know but I’ve been on journey and I think I might just be coming out the other side now... How have men responded to it, have they whispered/mentioned casually to you that it speaks to/for them? Less of a whisper, more of a shout! It’s resonated for sure and that’s been great. There’s some tricky stuff on there, taboo stuff, awkward stuff, difficult stuff. I made a decision to put it all out there. Whether it’s entirely me or not. It’s all in there/out there and we’re all going through it. Sometimes I wonder whether not talking actually makes us ill. I’m almost evangelical about it. Almost... How about women-has it resonated with them as much? Or is their experience shaped differently by society? There’s no denying that what I say is very male-oriented and deliberately so but still there are shared ideas, shared themes, simple ideas that cross genders. There are lots of universal, communal conversations going on in there too. Up till about 2005 you were in Chumbawamba, who identified as an anarchist band, how have your politics evolved in the last 10 years or so, would you still identify as an anarchist? In the way I think we should organise, yes. In the fact that we have to take responsibility, do it ourselves, fight injustice and inequality, call out the egregious, take on the man, not rely on others, believe in a better fairer world also yes. But an anarchist who can bend his own rules, who can collaborate with the broad left, who can find links and connections and not exist in a bubble. Anarcho-outwardism. Anarchism because it is the best way to preclude social injustice and inequality or because you prioritise personal freedom? Anarchism because common sense. I saw a clip recently of Benjamin Zephaniah talking to Krishna Guru Murphy about anarchism (3), and KGM appeared to be struggling! Have you had similar experiences, that people find it hard to imagine something other than a tweaked version of what is? I loved that Zephaniah interview! He’s putting out those radical ideals but we know his heart is in the community. He’s no high-falutin head in the clouds fantasist. I love that. His feet firmly on the ground but he’s aiming at the stars. He’s a beautiful role model. I haven’t got any 5 point plan to change the world and whilst I might still dream of revolution I know that it’s unlikely. I love that Audre Lorde quote “Revolution is not a one-time event”. I also like that Howard Zinn quote ““We don't have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.” What next for Interrobang? Is there going to be a second album? It’s taking some small, initial, faltering steps. There will be a second album. There must be. Any early ideas about what sort of subjects it might engage with? Only that it will be different to the first. I’ve come through that process. I’m on a different adventure now. Audre Lorde again “ Life is very short and what we have to do must be done in the now”. So, album out and tour complete-any final reflections on the whole experience of starting from scratch in 2012 to releasing a brilliant album and going on tour again in 2018? At the age of 50 it felt like I was on cruise control, freewheeling downhill. One of the first lines I wrote for Interrobang was a stolen mashed up quote from somewhere or other that was “I’m embracing adventure with comfortable shoes and a clean place to shit, yeah that’s it”. I’m still on that adventure and I’m loving it all. Any plans for more dates later in the year? The autumn yeah; Ireland, Germany, hopefully a few choice UK shows. We’re still specifically waiting for the call for a Scottish jaunt too… I miss playing live. I miss Griff. Griff’s a genius. And a style guru. And a guitar god. We’ll be back though. Shouty man and loopy guitar man. Getting all hot and bothered under the starched and pressed collar… Thanks to Dunstan and to James for organising. Bibliography. (1)Dix, J. As ¼ of NSI Quartet he won the artistic contest at 36th edition of famous Jazz Juniors festival. The album “Introducing NSI” recorded by this band gained very positive reviews from Polish jazz journalists. Although NSI Quartet is main and most important area of Baszynski’s activity, he’s no stranger to other musical enterprises. He’s a regular co-operator of numerous theatres - eg. Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz theatre in Zakopane or Juliusz Słowacki theatre in Kraków. He also plays as sideman - in groups of Marcin Pospieszalski, Piotr Baron, Frank Parker, Joachim Mencl, Wojciech Groborz, Jan Pilch or Paweł Kaczmarczyk. He was also a member of famous Zbigniew Namysłowski Bigband. Baszyński was born in Croatia, in Dubrovnik - as a child of musical family. He moved to Poland at the age of 8. He started studying as classical musician at Music Academy in Gdańsk, but during first year of studies his interests turned to jazz. This triggered relocating to Kraków, to study at Jazz and Modern Department of Kraków Music Academy. In 2016 he was granted a Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage scholarship for talented young artists. Same year he became a part of legentary Polish band FreeCooperation, led by Wojciech Konikiewicz. Współpracuje z teatrami - m.in. To skłoniło go do zmiany uczelni i rozpoczęcia nauki na Wydziale Jazzu i Muzyki Współczesnej w Krakowskiej Akademii Muzycznej. W 2016 roku otrzymał stypendium Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego.

“Building Bridges Not Walls”
The world’s festival WOMAD UK will be back to celebrate its thirty-fifth year July 27-30, 2017. This festival is a joyful and timely reminder that in a world where division and isolation are increasingly prominent, music can still bring people together from all around the globe, just as it did at WOMAD Chile, which recently brought 52,000 people together.
Along with a dynamic lineup, WOMAD will play host to a vast mix of art, dance, food, wellbeing, discussion and family activities, all taking place in the spirit of fun, diversity and originality that has made it an institution among summer festivals.
To kick things off, the festival just announced the first names of artists that will appear at this year’s gathering at Charlton Park, near Malmesbury in Wiltshire. As usual, this year’s lineup will include musicians from every imaginable, background bringing one of the most eclectic lineups to date.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Ever since they appeared on Paul Simon’s Graceland album more than three decades ago, Ladysmith Black Mambazo have been a household name right across the globe. thanks in no small part to their near-constant touring schedule: “we are the travelling musical academy for South African culture,” they proudly boast. And their trademark sound – that weightless, dignified choral singing – still sounds as stirring today as it did when they formed in the mid-60s.
Benjamin Zephaniah
There’s plenty going on in 2017’s chaotic world for Benjamin Zephaniah to take his pen to. And he’s back to voicing his discontent through the medium of music, with the heavily honoured poet striking up the band again for his latest musical project – Revolutionary Minds. Expect Benjamin’s ever-sharp literary barbs to take aim at a planet caving in on itself.
Emir Kusturica
Like Benjamin, Emir Kusturica is something of a polymath, a man with the confidence and talent to turn his hand to many things, whether it’s film-making, acting, writing or music. When he puts on his musical hat, the Serbian is found in the company of The No Smoking Orchestra, his ragged band of musical miscreants who deliver a wild, iconoclastic (and sweat-soaked) take on East European gypsy and folk traditions.
Shobaleader One
Shobaleader One is the side project of Squarepusher, a live band that also features the equally mysterious monikered Strobe Nazard, Company Laser and Arg Nution. They specialise in full-band revisits of Squarepusher classics from over the years, adding a vital, visceral dimension to tunes already held dear by the great man’s acolytes.
The essence of WOMAD doesn’t simply rest with its better-known performers. There’s as much joy to be found stumbling over artists who you’ve never encountered before. And this year, as much as any other, there are plenty of new discoveries to make, right through the musical alphabet, from Australia to Zanzibar. They include…

Alsarah & the Nubatones (Sudan/USA) – Alsarah, a Sudanese refugee now adding more depth and definition to American culture, has been described by The Guardian as “the new star of Nubian pop”. With her effortlessly slinky collection of songs, we’re inclined to agree.
Bokanté (USA/Guadeloupe)– With members of jazz-funk collective Snarky Puppy at its heart, Bokanté are fronted by Guadeloupe-born singer Malika Tirolien and her goosebump-inducing voice. This is jazz-soul-rock dipped in rich and satisfying Creole flavours.
Bombino (Niger)- Of all the practitioners of Saharan blues, Bombino (aka Omara Moctar) is undeniably the one who rocks out the most. While his sound is deeply rooted in his Tuareg heritage, he clearly counts Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page among his guitar heroes.
Chico Trujillo (Chile)Boisterous, cobweb-banishing outfit who supercharge the sound of cumbia with the twin fuels of ska and rock. Strongly recommended to fans of Mano Chao and former WOMAD favourites Los de Abajo.
Grupo Canalón de Timbiquí (Colombia)– Rootsy rhythms from this multi-membered outfit with an excellent line in Afro-Colombian folk sounds from the country’s Pacific coast.
Jamie Smith’s Mabon (UK)– Young but high-pedigree folk outfit led by fearsome accordionist Jamie Smith. Live, they’re a dizzying, dazzling celebration of this sceptred isle’s various Celtic corners.
Khmer Rouge Survivors (Cambodia)– The latest project of producer Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Malawi Mouse Boys, Hanoi Masters), the Khmer Rouge Survivors are a collection of Cambodian musical elders who play, in the words of The Observer, “slow, eerie, south-east Asian blues”.
Maarja Nuut (Estonia)– Haunting music from northern Europe. Maarja is both a vocalist and fiddler, two disciplines she handles with immaculate care and precision. And, somewhat bizarrely, she counts Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon among her fans!
The Nile Project (Egypt/Ethiopia and more)– Evocative sounds from this collective drawn from several countries through which the Nile runs. The great river is the source of both their social commitment and their musical inspiration.
Nomade Orquestra (Brazil)– Heavy on the horns, this Gilles Peterson-endorsed ten-piece outfit from Sao Paulo lay down fluid jazz-funk that appeals to both the brain and the body.
Rajab Suleiman & Kithara (Zanzibar)– This East African band focus in on taarab music, the sound of their island homeland that’s a timeless and beguiling mix of Arabic and European traditions.
Savina Yannatou (Greece)– This wonderfully eloquent singer seamlessly merges traditional Sephardic and Greek songs with a tasteful, avant-garde sensibility that’s seen her record countless albums for the mighty contemporary classical/jazz label ECM.
Spooky Men’s Chorale (Australia)– Light relief – and a collection of exotic headware – comes from this tongue-firmly-implanted-in-cheek male voice choir from (New South) Wales. One particular highlight is their “Swedish folk song” – aka Abba’s Dancing Queen.
Tom Middleton (UK)– DJ, producer and remixer (for the likes of Orbital, Leftfield, Goldfrapp and Gotan Project among legions of others) and who promises “a funk-filled, emotive and soulful mix of futuristic bass, deep house, techno, electro boogie and garage”.
Zhou Family Band (China)– Irrepressible ensemble playing the music that accompanies births and deaths in central-eastern China. There’s oodles of energy in their performances, making them kindred spirits with many East European gypsy bands.
More artists for WOMAD UK 2017 will be announced soon, alongside further details of exciting partnerships with BBC Radio 3 and Yalumba Wine.
WOMAD’s Global Festival Director Chris Smith said, “This is the perfect collection of artists to kick off WOMAD 2017. Some new faces and some old friends returning after a long absence, all of whom I’m certain will demonstrate the extent to which WOMAD still, after thirty-five years, has the power to surprise people and give them a musical experience they’ve never had before. As well as providing a festival experience like no other, we increasingly, in the age of Brexit and Donald Trump, feel responsibility to champion those who are willing to share their culture with others, celebrate variety and build bridges not walls.”
