confession: look, on the one hand, I like Spider, I do. He’s an interesting character and I agree that the hate he gets in some corners of the fandom is absolutely ridiculous. He’s not a backstabber or villainous or a flip-flopper or whatever other bullcrap, he’s an orphan kid in an alien world trying to find somewhere to belong, the hate is silly.

but.

I’m growing equally tired of seeing posts with an attitude of trying to guilt-trip people for not viewing him as a member of the Sully family. Canonically, he simply isn’t (sorry, but the movie directly, explicitly stating “he wasn’t part of our family” outweighs concept art with an “unofficial adoption” songcord bead).

The Sully family is very personally meaningful to me right now, so naturally I want to focus my energy on them. Spider is of course a close friend of the family, so sometimes he will be included just like Norm or other characters are sometimes included, but I’m not going to go out of my way to shove him in every single time...and quite frankly, the more I see folks acting like it’s somehow problematic to not consider Spider a member of the Sully family (which again canonically he isn’t), the less I want to do stuff that includes him :/

#and again it's not because i have anything against Spider himself #i'm just tired of being coerced into considering him a Sully when he isn't #like. back last year before the movie came out we all THOUGHT Jake and Neytiri raised Spider due to misreporting in an article #and I was fine with considering him part of the family because I thought that was canon #hence some of my very early art where he is depicted as officially adopted #BUT then the comics and later the movie came out and showed that the article was mistaken #jake and neytiri didn't adopt or raise him (nor were they obligated to but that's a topic for another post) #he was just a close friend of the family; particularly kiri and lo'ak #so now i don't consider or depict him as a member of the family...because turns out he isn't #and yes i acknowledge that in future movies he might well get officially taken into the family #in fact at the moment I'd say that's pretty likely #and i'm fine with that! #but most of my work focuses on the time between a1 and a2 when the kids were still young so #whether or not spider gets taken in post-wow is kinda irrelevant to it :P #-whew- sorry this has been brewin' for a while #spider socorro #sully family

Nimona headcanons I wrote while waiting for my plushies to arrive:

Nimona can regenerate limbs like a lizard

They use all pronouns and if they're feeling more one way than another, or not feeling whatever gendered term used, they'll just interrupt whoever is speaking and go "Nope" until they either give up or guess right. It frequently happens with interviewers, and he'll even switch it up mid interview because she enjoys being an absolute menace to them.

If it wasn't for the fact that she's incredibly durable (see: her getting an arrow to the leg and getting STABBED and being FINE) Nimona would always have bandages and bruises on her arms and legs from doing dumb stuff with no regard for her safety

Nimona DIYs a lot of their clothes, and even taught themself how to sew, knit, and crochet over the years because they got bored and needed something to wear (yes they could in theory just shift into whatever outfit they please but let them have hobbies come on)

Nimona changes his appearance every time they find something cool or has a new idea for the way they think would be cool to look, but always keeps her signature pink color

They have a mental catalog of their favorite appearances and will cycle through them periodically when they get bored of their current one, so sometimes they'll just come in and be dressed like they're from the 1500's or something. One time Bal walked in, and Nimona was just casually trying on their different eras. He was startled at first but it's normal for them to just be doing stuff and for nimona to suddenly look like a completely different person or an extinct animal or something, just for fun.

Nimona and Ambrosius do not handle the heat well. They both overheat incredibly easily, but Bal runs cold, so he's always freezing and will complain when they blast the AC. He's under like three blankets, while nimona has shifted into a lizard in an attempt to cool down, and Ambrosius is literally on the floor directly in front of the air conditioner.

Nimona can NOT handle spicy food. They claim they can and still attempt eating it, but for all the years they've been alive, they have not been able to build their spice tolerance at all. They love it, but they struggle to find spicy food that they can enjoy without sobbing while also being spicy.

The Bayern books were my favorite series until Attolia, and then Forest Born sucked. The Attolia books were (and still are) my favorite series by a mile, and then the last two books were just okay. I absolutely loved the Lunar Chronicles, Fairest, and Heartless, and then Gilded and Cursed were two of the worst books I've ever read in my life. So no, I have not read the Hunger Games prequel.

the good news is that I finished a book and it got me out of my reading slump where I would start things, not finish, switch to something else, not finish

the bad news is that "yes daddy" by jonathan parks-ramage is one of the worst written books I've read in a whiiiile. bland expositiony prose, flat characters, a bunch of weird plot detours. Written like a 200-page Wikipedia summary instead of an actual book

the worst news is that it has such intensely favorable gushing reviews on goodreads, and the people who hated it mostly hated it for a different reason, and so I'm left alone like oKAY BUT THE PROSE WAS SHIT, HOW DO YOU NOT SEE THIS

#the writing is LAUGHABLY BAD you guys. how did people like this booooook #but most of the bad reviews are like 'I hated this book because it had too many rape scenes and lots of bad things happen' #BUT MY PROBLEM IS it's so badly written that it's like reading the wikipedia of a horror movie where it flatly tells you the grisly bits #very 'and then four grown men lived in a garden shed as waiters/sex slaves. one of them tripped and hit his head. he's dead now.' #just no emotional impact whatsoever bc this guy cannot write and the characters are all made of cardboard #it bills itself as a gothic/thriller but it has NO grasp of any of the conventions of that genre #there's a weird interlude where the protag becomes evangelical?? and starts going on about The Evils of Gay Sex?? #he gets inspiration to commit arson by READING GOOP? AND THIS IS PLAYED AS SERIOUS AFTER HIS FRIEND'S SUICIDE?? #how did ANYONE take this book seriously let alone enjoy it #it's SO awful. this guy CANNOT write his way out of a paperbag #it's even worse too bc the main character is supposed to be a professional writer with an MFA and the book is the character's memoir #which I consider tantamount to a plot hole BECAUSE THE WRITING IS SO SO BAD #the sketchy rich old guy and his butler/ex call him Rebecca and he doesn't get the reference?? he has an MFA in playwriting and yet! #it's been a while since I got to write a REALLY scathing 1-star goodreads review so that's cathartic at least

The main thing that the Jackson LotR movies are good for is providing a mental database of detailed visuals, so I don't have to imagine absolutely everything, which frees up my brain to fill in all the details of all the amazing scenes that they didn't bother to include in the movies.

Given Film Red being in the sort of canon space that most of the other movies are (the movie itself not being canon, but Uta being a canon character as shown in the manga), here are my Thoughts on Uta and Shanks for this blog’s canon:

When Uta accidentally unleashes the Tot Musica as a child, it ends up being too much of a strain on her and kills her. Without it’s host, the Tot Musica is stopped. However, in a blind rage over her death, Shanks wipes out all of Elegia--killing the civilians and ordering the crew to loot any goods from the wreckage before they depart.

He doesn’t have the heart to tell Luffy that she was killed and he doubles down on not taking kids with him.

Given how protective he was during her childhood, outside of his crew, the only ones who knew about her were Buggy, Mihawk, and Rayleigh. He does not and will not talk about her, though a few remnants of her exist on his ship.

#obviously if anyone wants to write within the context of the movie (him leaving her on elegia) i'm here for it #but i treat uta like shiki in that she's canon but the movie isn't #so this will be the canon for uta on this blog #it fits better canon wise going with the anime and manga (given her appearance in it while shanks is thinking about the others) #but also i need more morally grey shanks who is f*cked up #more of him not being a good guy #and tbh i really wanted him to wipe out an island i'm sorry #UTA. #HEADCANON. #this has been in my drafts forever #but y'all know by now how much i love my girl <3

#my art #artists on tumblr #I cannot accept that it has been 5 years already #I know covid messed with everyone’s sense of time but it simultaneously feels so much longer and so much shorter than that #exactly five years ago I was holding onto my mom for dear life and sobbing as we watched lilo and stitch together #not the best movie to watch when you’ve just lost your first ever pet you know #and then I cried myself to sleep at the next morning we never mentioned her again #I know it’s because it was way too painful for everyone involved. but I do wish I was allowed to process that grief properly #instead of bottling it up and pretending everything was okay until I was reminded of her #feeling like my heart was being shattered over and over again every single time #well anyway. enough of that. I’ve allowed myself a nice long cry today and got most of it out of my system #and once I was feeling okay I decided to draw her #and I can count the number of times I’ve drawn animals on one hand so.. I’m not too sure about the result #but it felt like to commemorate her in some way. #so yeah. here she is. my dear girl. the best dog in existence. she was always so affectionate and kind #which I didn’t always appreciate bc of how young I was. when you’re a kid it feels like pets will live forever #never barked. never bit anyone. her only crime was chewing on my mlp and lps toys that I left out on the floor #but I’m grateful she did that. it taught me not to leave my toys lying around and to clean up after myself #she really was taken from me way too soon. ideally she could still be alive right now. but I’ve been down the road of guilt and regret #there was nothing I could do. I was a child. I can only hope that she knew she was loved right until the very end #even if I didn’t know how to show it properly. and great. now I’m tearing up again #I suppose it’s unavoidable. April 12th will always be a melancholy day. and maybe that’s not such a bad thing #it’s good to have a day when I can freely remember her and cry if I need to. it’s healthy. it’s better than crying every day #she never liked it much when I cried. always tried to comfort me. that’s the kind of dog she was. I miss her so much #when I move apartments and get a dog of my own I’m getting a spaniel. just like she was #well. maybe a different colour so I don’t end up sobbing every time I look at it. but spaniels really are the perfect breed #I mean. cavaliers especially were bred for love and warmth. that’s just what I need. it will be nice to have someone waiting for me at home #and while I don’t necessarily believe in the afterlife… I do hope that Fanny’s watching over me #spiritually comforting me when I feel all alone in the world. it’s a nice thought for sure #and hopefully she won’t mind me getting another spaniel too much. it will be done in her honour after all. to make up for my past mistakes
