I've only barely edged my toes into Act 3, but I have to ask what is "Haunted One"?
thank you!! (answering questions about my WIPs here)
This one's a prequel fic! The title comes from the name of the in-game background if you play the Dark Urge. But I'll still be super cautious and go under a cut in case you don't know what the Dark Urge is yet and don't want to know.
.
.
.
So this is the origin story for my Valas DeVir, told in four days: the last day of his childhood, and his first day in Bhaal's temple, then the first day he meets Enver Gortash and the last day before he's betrayed by Orin.
He's the son of my character from the first two games, so there's a fair amount of reconciling that with the bg3 backstory: his relationship with Jaheira, tension with Sarevok and Helena Anchev, Bhaal taking hold of him through his dreams and the arrival of his Urge. It flirts with some broader dnd canon, too, especially the Murder in Baldur's Gate campaign: the death of Valas's father as he turns into the Slayer, and the off-page presence of Torlin Silvershield, the former Chosen of Bhaal.
Plus a whole lot of durgetash in the second pair of chapters.
This one's my biggest focus right now and the first time I've ever written all the chapters of something before starting to post it, so I'm ajsdklfjsfldsgfjdslf very excited to get it out into the world soon!
Hmm, for an excerpt I'll do some of the Gortash chapter I've never shared before:
It’s a singular feeling, the anticipation that comes before a party within the Upper City’s wall. Enver Gortash had savoured it, back when he’d had to arrive grasping a signed invitation to be admitted after dark, to stand on the edges at some minor family’s manor making eyes at Wisteria Jannath until she could steal away. He enjoys it still, new in his lordship, even as each night’s extravagance grows uninspiring: the moments before the performance, where his very presence is a show of power. And tonight, as he makes his way to the storied Silvershield Estate—tonight has the air of one he’ll want to remember. An important meeting, an introduction choreographed with a gravity befitting its promise. Later, with hindsight, he’ll look back and see this as a turning point. As perhaps the most important evening of his life. But for now, with a jacket dark and fingers adorned gold, he breathes in that potential in the evening air as he reaches the neighbourhood’s western edge. He chose today for the location itself, and he hadn’t had to wait long for the right invitation: the Silvershields are consummate hosts, their property the length of a city block, their gardens expansive and expensive, the walls themselves carved intricately, patriotically with yellow granite from the bluffs. It’s an unmistakable honour to be invited for newer members of the Gate’s gentry; being seen here—making an impression here—that’s been a coveted thing for generations. Yet the list is far from exclusive, to attract enough revellers to keep the grounds from looking too sparse: a place possible to bring an unexpected guest. A dangerous guest. Even better, in Gortash’s mind, is the layer of iniquity past all the pristine gravel and polished gossip, if you know what lies beyond the hinged bookshelf in Duke Torlin Silvershield’s office on the second floor. Gortash doesn’t, not exactly, but he has his suspicions from information spied and stolen: enough that he’d be surprised if his invited guest hasn’t graced these halls before, though surely not in the view of so many gentle, innocent eyes. No, a party like this is Lord Gortash’s world. And he intends to keep the upper hand.

for context for anyone who hasn't read/played through murder in baldur's gate or dead in thay—torlin silvershield died at the end of murder in baldur's gate circa 1482 DR, and became chosen of bhaal right before his death. he was not actually in charge of the cult of bhaal for any extended amount of time. his appearance in dead in thay is explicitly described as the recovery of his body, and he appears as a wight. though obviously do as you want and ignore canon where you see fit, i thought it was still worth putting out there

A theme in my Manva and Enver dynamic that I haven’t spoken about here is religious reform and it’s a really core one. I may do a longer post when I’m not so busy on this but basically:
Manva’s control, precision, her killing with her hands, her plain presentation, is all linked to her reform of the Temple of Bhaal in the pursuit of the True Death. Whereas the old requirements of the temple were based in money and tithe from people expecting protection, assassination contracts, extravagant kills, she is taking it to a new era of reverence for the blood, and the pursuit of a True Death of all of Toril. This makes her extremely unpopular with some members of the temple, including those who support Orin, and those who were acolytes of the last chosen Torlin.
Gortash is also in the process of reforming the cult of Bane, but in a more responsive way to the changing socioeconomic principles of the sword coast. We are seeing the advent of the press, of landlords and industrial tycoons, and he is angling to make the church of the tyrant appealing to this new captain of industry class, a wealthy club that allows real privileges to its members. In some ways he is borrowing from the “secret society” model that many prominent Bhaalists pursued of having an outlet for their desires, as Manva is making the Bhaalists more puritanical.

Ulder Ravengard
have you met Ulder and gone dude why are you so mean to your son? do you want to write some fun angst for Wyll? well then do I have some meta for you.
This is a summary of the events of Murder in Baldur's Gate, the adventure that introduced Ulder + a lot of other plot points for BG3, plus some bits from his later appearances in Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus and Rise of Tiamat. MiBG isn't widely run, but this is heavy spoilers, so reader beware!
Murder in Baldur's Gate is an adventure very few people have heard of and also one of the most critical to the plot of BG3 (aside from Descent into Avernus which it was introduced as a direct companion/sequel to). It was part of the D&D Next playtest for 5e, and was written so that it could be played in 3e, 4e, or with the playtest rules, and is thus a really weird but fun adventure to run.
The core concept is this: Grand Duke Abdel Adrian (AKA Gorion's Ward AKA Charname from BG1/BG2) is attacked by the last remaining Bhaalspawn. One of them kills the other, and the survivor is turned into the Slayer, who the party is introduced helping to take down. What no one knows is that this also led directly to the resurrection of Bhaal, who proceeds to lurk in the shadows, manipulating events.
The main structure of the module is that there are three characters vying to take control of the city in the upheaval - Duke Torlin Silvershield who wants to consolidate power for the patriars and himself, Rilsa Rael of the Guild who's trying to start a populist uprising, and Ulder Ravengard, who's vying for the open Duke spot and trying to get the Flaming Fist more control over the city.
They're also all three touched by Bhaal, slowly driven over the deep end to drive the city into chaos. There are 10 stages, each with a mission from one of the three. If things go off as written (either because the party, working for that antagonist, did as they were told, or if they failed to intervene) they gain a rank of 'Bhaal's Favor' - with the winner ascending as the Chosen of Bhaal and wreaking havoc on the city.
Who is Ulder Ravengard at the start?
"Ravengard is not a zealot or a fascist - not yet, anyway."
Blaze Ulder Ravengard is the fourth son of a lower city smith, who is intensely loyal to the Flaming Fist, believing them to be the backbone of the city. He's repeatedly described as being disciplined, focused, and utilitarion. He has "no interest in domestic matters" and his soldiers respect rather than love him.
However, unlike most of the Fist, his goals are for the good of the city. He "seethes over the eagerness of ill-doers to control others, steal the fruits of honest folk's labor, and otherwise misuse hardworking people" - what manifests mainly in a crusade against the Guild, but he's no fan of the patriars and their corruption either.
Specifically, he plans to "wage war" against the Guild - and is aware that "wars aren't won without casualties or collateral damage" - pointing out his blind spot that "he excuses all actions taken for the public good while simultaneously deploring identical deeds that others carry out for less altruistic reasons"
Ulder's main flaw is that he thinks the ends justify the means, and that he's willing to do anything to protect the "honest" citizens of the city against crime. He's fine with intense methods if they produce results. That is to say, he's a cop.
To be honest my whole meta on Ulder really can be summed down with "ACAB" but we'll keep going anyways.
Murder in Baldur's Gate
It's Uktar 1482, at the Founder's Day celebration, and Grand Duke Abdel Adriain is dead. Ulder was his right hand, and was there for the death - but unarmed, because the Flaming Fist don't have authority in the Upper City, only the City Watch, who due to poor planning were too far away to do anything to help.
Ulder is the only one of the three antagonists to meet with the players openly, and invites them to Wyrm Crossing where he offers temporary membership in the Flaming Fist. His plan is to regain order, investigate the death (he thinks the Guild is behind it) and put himself up as Adrian's replacement.
Most of the module occurs in "stages" where each antagonist has their own plan going, which the party can either help or hinder.
Ravengard shuts down two gambling dens run by the Guild in the lower city, boarding them up and bringing the owners in for questioning.
Ravengard sends extra Flaming Fist to patrol the docks to check on workers from the Outer City he believe to be behind recent vandalism and tax robberies - they proceed to enact some police brutality.
Several statues (including the Beloved Ranger) are vandalized by a group of patriar youths. Whoever the party turns them over to gains a rank of Bhaal's Favor
Ravengard begins campaigning for Duke. Traditionally, the spot has ties to the Lower City and the Flaming Fist, but the Parliament of Peers wants a patriar instead - Wyllyck Caldwell. Ravengard blackmails Caldwell to get him to step away.
Ravengard convinces the Harbormaster to raise tariffs on luxury items (in response to the stage 2 sumptuary laws Silvershield enacts)
The Court of the Fist is set up - an illegal military tribunal where the Flaming Fist begin capturing suspected Guild members and sympathizers,
Ravengard closes down the Baldur's Mouth under suspicion the Guild is using it to communicate.
Rioting in the city breaks out, the Flaming Fist cracks down violently if the players don't intervene
Ravengard declares martial law. Not complying with the Flaming Fist is grounds for execution.
Ravengard sets up public executions. Over a hundred are killed within the first hour.
It Ends With Blood: if Ulder Ravengard is the Chosen of Bhaal, he reigns death on the city from above using the trebuchets in the Seatower of Balduran.
Event 10 occurs for the top two of Bhaal's favor, and Event 11 for the chosen - which is canonically Silvershield. So, we know events one through nine were at least ordered, even if circumvented - martial law is the only one that can't be averted.
Given that he ends up "winning" (becoming Grand Duke) I think the executions probably didn't happen (and instead Rilsa Rael staged her prison break) but it doesn't actually break canon.
Rise of Tiamat & Descent into Avernus
Sometime around or shortly before 1485, Ulder is named Grand Duke. 1485 is the year Wyll is banished for his pact with Mizora - which means he was only the Duke's son for maximum a few years.
In 1489, Ulder represents the city on the council to deal with the threat of Tiamat, where his traits are:
Ideals: Responsibility, glory ("I am trusted with protecting thousands of lives, and I will not betray that trust no matter what my personal desires.") Interaction Traits: Honest Pledged Resources: Flaming Fist warriors and expert advisers to train conscript troops
In Descent to Avernus, he's described as having been elected "backed by idealistic commoners and enemies of the other established dukes" and that his concerns are the "stability and prosperity" of the city. He's the "voice of reason and common sense" but not egalitarianism.
The central tenet of DIA is that Ulder Ravengard is an honorable man, and without him to keep the Flaming Fist in line, they exercise their power cruelly (guided along by Vanthampur as she tries to consolidate power)
In Elturel, Ulder has taken charge of the city's defense. You meet him as he has tried to recover a relic and been caught by a psychic attack from Baphomet, that is mostly grounds for him to give a lore drop.
Okay, that's a lot of information. Summary please?
Ulder Ravengard is a cop.
He's not a bad cop. He's not interested in power, wealth, or fame. He wants what's best for the city...and he believes that the Flaming Fist, with the right motivation and guidance are it.
But, like, he's still a cop. He's inflexible, and doesn't see much nuance in situations. He's Lawful Neutral, in a genuine sense, he believes in the righteousness of Order, and can't see the nuances or the downsides.
If he's a righteous man, why hasn't he put work into reforming the very corrupt Flaming Fist? Because Good Cops don't fix anything, and I don't think he actually has a problem with most of it. Sure, the punishment is extreme, but you were committing a crime - Mercy is a virtue for a judge to hold, but it isn't a right. He's more concerned with the corruption vis a vis bribes from patriars and the Guild than the police brutality angle.
He's a good man to have running your army. He's a good man to marshal your defenses as your city goes plummeting to hell. Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate? The only thing he has going for him is that everyone else is just as bad.
Of course he exiled Wyll - if you're not guilty, you have nothing to hide. There was nothing more damning than not being able to speak (which Mizora knew; she is, in fact, good at her job). Ulder's views of patriar corruption (and status as being from the lower city) also has him uniquely positioned to be very harsh - he can't be the person who lets his son's crimes slide, not and clamp down on the patriars doing the same thing.
But once he had the context, he accepted him immediately - the ends justify the means. Ulder Ravengard is a man who would make a deal with a devil to save his city...so long as he knows the price.
(now, on the 'leaving 17yo Wyll in charge...look, this gets complicated, but the only way it works is if he's put in charge of the Flaming Fist, not as 'heir to the Duke' mostly because Ravengard doesn't trust most of the Fist to not be corrupt. Even then, I think it's likely to be a bit more of Wyll's POV (I have to step up!) and less an official chain of command, but he could easily have been an official member).
There are definitely places with Wyll that you can see how he has and hasn't taken his father's ideology. He's got some naive views (Baldur's Gate, welcoming refugees??) that suit someone who was taught the theory but never actually practiced politics, but he definitely has a leaning towards some of Ulder's views about law and order and ends and means.
And as for Grand Duke Wyll Ravengard, well....
Tumblr media
...let's just say, with the right people pushing buttons, I could see him going down the 'declare martial law' route too.

Is there any thoughts and musings around Vel and the other chosen of Bhaal (idk if you keep the choice of Torlin Silvershield or not!)
(I should probably note that I would prefer never to read Murder in Baldur's Gate and am basing my headcanons and understanding of the characters on their wiki page alone)
Running on the assumption that Bhaal returned at his original status of Intermediate Power before the end of the Second Sundering, and was capable of having more than one Chosen, I'd have that category include Torlin Silvershield, Rilsa Rael, Orin the Red and Vel himself, all empowered in 1482 DR. I guess it'd be hard to include Ulder and keep it canon compliant, but I do think it'd be funny for Vel to be aware of that Bhaal considered it - would Wyll or Ulder ever believe him? Probably not. But he remembers... The Dark Urge is described alternatively as Bhaal's avatar and his prophet, so I assume Vel was warned before hand and prepared for both Bhaal's return and the potential candidates for his chosen.
Vel's general opinion on the concept of other Chosen, regardless of who they are, is that they aren't any different from any other servant of his Father. They are favoured, and high ranking and he expects them to serve the interests of the church and their god above all other things - and answer to him. As Bhaal's walking avatar upon the mortal world, obviously he outranks them. His relationships remain personal and professional, regardless of his own opinion on them as a person. He does look down on Torlin and Rilsa a bit, because they're not true faithful, but whatever. It's not for him to question Bhaal's will in deciding who serves him... even if he is killing and mutilating Torlin in his mind every time he perceives him.
I'm thinking that both Torlin and Rilsa were allied to the Bhaalist cult before Bhaal's return, and lived their lives indirectly (even unknowingly) strengthening the deity and his temple.
Starting with Grand Duke Silvershield: Torlin would have told you that they were such very good chums, and he would've believed it. Vel would smile politely and tell you the same thing, while stabbing him in his mind. Growing up below the poverty line, then being homeless between the ages 8-15 and so desperate for food he was driven to discover the joys of cannibalism (unaware of the fact that he can't actually starve to death) has certainly not given him a chip on his shoulder about the rich and powerful, nor has he ever taken "eat the rich" literally. Nope.
Torlin ties in nicely to my headcanon about the Bhaalists running red rooms in the Undercellar; a headcanon slightly inspired by Pillars of Eternity, where there was a performing troupe doing literal snuff plays for depraved nobles who could hide behind their wealth and privilege. Torlin was introduced to Vel and Bhaal when he was young, visiting the Undercellar to bask in its bad reputation and look edgy and grown up, as teenagers do. Unlike some of his friends, Torlin's interest of the sick, evil crap that was rumoured to be happening down there was genuine. The Bhaalists use divination magic like detect thoughts and detect alignment in order to pick out potential clients/converts in the crowd (as well as trading notes with the Loviatans and the Sharessans (more discreetly) for who amongst their clientele really likes the bad stuff).
And they picked up on Torlin, and a nice heavily veiled person offered him a mask and asked him if he'd like to see a private show, because he seems like he'd really fit in with their exclusive clientele, and edgy, genuinely kind of fucked up teenage Toril agrees. (It's ok! the "guest actors" are all criminals, monsters, vagrants, adventurers... nobody "important.")
As far as Vel was concerned, Torlin was evidence that the world was an inherently terrible place when you look closely enough, and he was doing people a favour by sparing them from living in it.
And so the future Grand Duke grew up visiting red rooms and snuff plays and maintaining an interesting circle of friends, who he was happy to help make even more connections in government. He often mentioned during his little chats with Vel in his drawing room about a young man making waves amongst the halls of power, incredible knack for invention young Enver has... Vel made a note to keep an eye on him in case Gortash became somebody useful, or a hinderance, but mostly ignored this.
As far as my own canon goes, Torlin retained Gond as his patron deity, and was genuinely Master of the Hall of Wonder, but he certainly worshipped Bhaal through his actions and was a great friend to his temple. When he died, the temple saluted his memory during the Feast of the Moon that year - Vel was uncharacteristically enthusiastic about it.
-
Rilsa was a little more on Vel's level, though he'd loooong since given into depression and stopped giving a shit about anything except the pleasure Bhaal could give him. He lost her idealism and belief that getting rid of those in power would do anything at all to improve things before he hit 20, but hey, she's happy to work with and be sponsored by the shady assassins and we do so admire a creative butcher. He certainly wasn't above using his miserable childhood experiences and legitimate bitterness and dislike of the wealthy to play on her sympathies and get her to see him as an ally. If they'd met when he was young, he would've seen her as a genuine ally.
And Rilsa did see him as an ally, she maybe wasn't completely up to date on what her allies were (beyond one of those oddball cults who refuse to move on after their gods' deaths) but they were very useful. Any maybe they did tend to push her towards the more murderous options now and then... Rilsa maybe enjoyed killing and hurting the oppressive classes a little more than was healthy.
Where Torlin was an advantage in getting the temple connections and worshippers in the upper ranks, Rilsa was one of their best connections on the street level.
Rilsa, an idealist willing to take creative and "ruthless" measures in achieving her goals, often worked with the crazy murder cultists worshipping their dead god. She provided the Garden of Whispers for the Bhaalists to have their clandestine meetings in, when the Undercellar or the Undercity weren't ideal. The unofficial public forums in the Calim Jewel Emporium were useful for identifying sacrificial targets who had pissed everybody off so much that wouldn't make too many waves - some would even put you in public favour if you offed them.
The fact that she was buddies with Ettvard Needle and may have been able to sway his opinion before writing incriminating things about her allies certainly helped in making her allies fond of her.
Rilsa doesn't strike me as the type who'd work well in the temple for the long run (too much cosying up to nobility and preying on the poor and powerless), so I'd guess that Bhaal withdrew his power and revoked her Chosen status after the Sundering was done. She might still be an ally, if she's not aware of the Bhaalist's other friends.
Between Torlin pulling the strings in the halls of power, and Rilsa disrupting law enforcement, the two of them (unwittingly) managed to work together to secure Bhaalist holds on the watch and the Flaming Fist.
-
Ulder Ravenguard, obviously, never became a Chosen, but he could've been. He didn't become one, so Vel never paid him any attention, and post-game Vel and Bhaal aren't on speaking terms and Vel doesn't live in Baldur's Gate anymore, so it's not his problem. He still has to bite his tongue and fight to roll his eyes at the mention of the man and his virtuous nature.
Ulder remains blissfully oblivious to all this.
-
Orin would be in her own category, which would come with content warnings for horrible fucked up shit that comes from being raised in a cult with a fixation on keeping holy bloodlines "pure" that neither of them were happy about.
Mostly their relationship consisted of Vel ignoring her (he did not expect her to live to adulthood) and little Orin trying to get his attention/upstage him for Bhaal's attention and accidentally gaining a smidgeon of Vel's condescending respect/affection for her drive, skill and attitude (she doesn't care - die and acknowledge my worth, damn you!)
I'm so proud of her for stabbing him.

* duchess victoria silvershield; info.
triggering themes present with this muse include: bhaal-typical violence and gore, heavy manipulation, mind control, classism, etc.
victoria was an enchantment wizard and a noble in baldur's gate, having married into house silvershield some decades ago - her unwitting spouse remained under a powerful charm for the entirety of their courtship and subsequent marriage, any love between them fabricated, giving victoria free reign to do as she pleased without fear of reproach. she is actually the second chosen of bhaal to rise to power in the house, after torlin. one might begin to wonder whether the house's immense wealth and status are, in part, blessings of the dead three. she applied the teachings of nobility to her killing, exercising tact and subtlety where her kin often did not; when her father demanded sacrifice, she would deliver it in one of two ways. either she would put her silver tongue to use, worsening feuds between rival houses, urging them to end in extravagant bloodshed... or she would hold famously exclusive parties at her estate, during which one or two targets would invariably go missing. where many bhaalites would intentionally create scenes of carnage, she instead was careful with each drop of blood she spilled, saving it to drink in worship (or to paint with). she believed the practice made her stronger, more connected to bhaal, and perhaps it did: her god rewarded her creativity with certain boons that did nothing whatsoever to discredit the common rumour that she and caza.dor szarr had far more in common than their nigh-on translucent complexion. post-tadpole, she gravitates instead to the school of divination: if her past is an unknowable mass of thorns, then she will turn to her future for answers. she is a hungry, grasping creature, every ounce of her willpower committed to keeping back the tide of red intent on overwhelming her mind just enough to work toward a cure. she indulges it in small ways, much like ast.arion with his own hunger; allowing sazza to die, encouraging the gnoll warlord to cannibalise herself. putting the fear of god* into the absolutists. it is enough, for now.

so is amma a changeling/dopplerganger? or is she actually a tiefling? and like how old is she did she study away was she always in the cult like sorry im really interested in her... bewitched me body and soul etc
okay i rambled and took like 4 days to answer this so UNDER THE CUT
she is a tieflingggggg and that's what she's sticking with! if/when she does 'change shape' or w/e its a uhhh . spell. i forgot the name of it. disguise shape spell LMAO. but its only got a handful of variations compared to like. the mask of the shapeshifter yknow. okay so my like concept of amma and the winding water is that when "amity the first" is sent to investigate some like bhaalist pop up, bc its been a while since theyve been active but hey you cant trust a bhaalist. the first however convinces these like weeping devoted weirdo bhaalists that shes one of them, dives into the water and retrieves a babe from the like long dead watery remains of bhaal, but it's not really a child. like just some sort of . ok im losing words i was gonna say jellybean LOL but like equivalent of holding a very warm piece of light in hand. like divinity. and it's the weirdest thing for the first because bhaal literally wrecked personal havoc for a good few hundred years, pre and post death, and he's technically still dead by this point too when like they shouldn't be finding anymore spawn really popping up (or at least ones with enough divinity to warrant watching over in case of death and then resurrection of father dearest). but the divinity is warm and small and sweet, nothing like what the first had experienced with the crisis. and when the first like breaks through the surface of the river with a child pulled from bhaal's remains, it more than anything puts a good amount of fear back into them.
because the gods are Very Real, still, apparently, despite the spellplague and troubles causing all kinds of havoc around them. the first gets to the shore with this child who is not a child but is all at once, just a formation of river remains, bone, blood, weeds.
but this not-child opens its eyes and looks at her and as it grows, the first starts to notice it resembles her. not completely, there are some things that even the weirdness but also lack of magic can't replace when someone is created from their father's bones. yet horns grow, and a tail, and the child is a tiefling, by all accounts. the child is kind of hers.
as for like. how amma gets Educated™ and shizz, raised by the first and primistresses. introduced to maiming biting killing etc. definitely comes into her magic girl moment early as well, divine soul and all that (but evul!). amma is a weird quiet kid, takes well to like. everything outside the bhaalist attempts to foster their perfect little bhaalspawn considering it failed the last few times. attends like idk random ass colleges or like academies for one yr or smth. just randomly appears in the back of a class, learns, leaves. i would think it would be hilarious if she was at blackstaff academy in neverwinter and gale was there too at some point LMAO like lets start that rivalry off early. as far as like 'adopted' by another family goes, that did happen kind of, but she was also introduced to other bhaalist peers like torlin silvershield (who assisted with bringing back bhaal rip to gorions ward ig), thalamra vanthampur (funded the dead three when elturel was pulled into the hells), nysene eomane, rillyn family and other mostly devil worshipping families because its baldurs gate. you can throw a stone and like not 3ft from you hit someone who rly shouldnt worship a dang devil or god like.
granted she's not living this upper city lifestyle - these people are coming to the lower city, her domain. not an assassin for hire, but like, easy to bait and intrigue. is Known™ to some people but like do they want to know about her? probably not. especially when they see her collection of preserved. idk. eyeballs? spleens? choose a body part?
but amma is mostly just idling her and studying and picking up skills around the place, doing some sightseeing, maybe some unfortunate stabbing. the first kind of does try to get her into like. a family or two while amma is a wee child but there are uncontrollable urges and then combined with the blend of a child's emotional reaction and sharp objects and loud noises, it just becomes best for this kid to not be fostered. THERE WERE GOOD TIMES but there were also more bad than good. which is unfortunate and the first adds it to a long list of regrets. but amma pretty much starts going to these places and doing these things in her teens, well until what she remembers as like her late 20s early 30s, before returning to the temple of bhaal in baldurs gate. taking over. you come to me on the day of my daughter's wedding (has no daughter). freshly slaughtered class blood all over her and then like takes control of the bhaalist temple.
fucks around. finds out. in her downtime honestly still finds herself picking up books and whatever - debates attending lectures and the like at public forums. goes to a museum. looks at the sculptures. uses one for a weapon. moves on. culture !

Player Character / Tav of Baulder's Gate 3 Character Sheet
Name: Serenity ( Sere ) Caldwell. Age: Early 20s. Height: Medium. Clothes in Camp: Minthara's aka she looted it like the Rouge she is. :3 Hair Color: White / Silver. Eye Color: Light Elf Purple and Dark Elf Purple. Hair Length / Style: Medium / Winterfell Scarf. Ears: Pointed. Complexion: Pale. Profession: Folk Hero / Noble. Alignment: True Neutral. Granddaughter of Wyllyck and Abelea. Daughter of an unnamed Caldwell and Undyne of the Forgotten Lands.
The Caldwells are one of the oldest families in the Gate, and under her grandfather Wyllyck's leadership, sustained their great wealth. Serenity's grandad, however, did not hoard his wealth, and instead distributed a lot of it to charity. Because of this and several other reasons, the Caldwell family is very well regarded, not just in the Upper City, but city-wide. Her grandfather Wyllyck even invested into businesses in the Lower City, giving him great repute in the area. In addition to general charitable works, he donated very generously to the Church of Last Hope, Shrine of the Suffering, Watchful Shield, and the High House of Wonders.
Serenity shares a lot of her personality with her grandfather. She's said to be very modest, talented, and philanthropic. Serenity is more interested in studying, discussing alchemy, and conducting charity work, and thus declined invitations to noble galas. She believes most other patriars were too concerned with their own pleasure in order to care about the Lower and Outer City. Serenity was against the Guild, though that did not stop her from looking into issues within the Outer City.
In Baulder's Gate, Serenity could often by found in the Wide, studying alongside her fellow alchemists. The Caldwell patriarch is well liked all over Baldur's Gate. Many persons and organizations were impressed with Wyllyck and his extended family, including Duke Torlin Silvershield, the Parliament of Peers, and even his political rival, Ulder Ravengard.
Wyllyck has an intelligent wife, Abelea Caldwell, who was skilled at finance and business management. This is where Serenity gets her pragmatic skills and her stealing everything she sees, even if it's not really valuable. If it's sellable even for one gold, it's worth every yoinked slight of hand.
In 1482 DR, the Parliament of Peers planned on electing Serenity's grandfather, Wyllyck Calwell to become a duke and thus part of the Council of Four. Wyllyck had very strong support from existing dukes, and citizens from all around Baldur's Gate. However, Caldwell never became duke. He was eventually passed over in favor of Lord Ulder Ravengard.
The Caldwells originally made their fortune on the the extensive orchards of apples and pears that were grown south of Baldur's Gate. In the 1400s, they branched out into importing raw timber and exporting cut and treated lumber, thanks to their own treatment process. This was used by the majority of builders, carpenters, coopers, shipwrights, and wheelwrights in the region. By the 1480s DR, they'd expanded into shipping upriver and bought and operated two ships, Abelea and Sweetseed.
They are very well regarded within the city for their numerous charitable endeavors and financial investments in businesses located throughout the Lower City. They made generous donations to several temples: the High House of Wonders, the Watchful Shield, the Shrine of the Suffering, and the Church of Last Hope. By 1492, they had ownership of most of the art museums in Baldur's Gate. Nevertheless, their riches were still not a patch on those of the Silvershield family.
Wyllyck and Abelea had multiple sons, in which one unnamed one fell in love with the mermaid Undyne, who grew legs and left the sea to be with the one she loved. They eventually wed and had Serenity, their only child. Her mermaid gene is more submissive than her High Elf one so when they classified her after the birth, she was put under the High Elf category. The only affects that she has that can been scene is her impulsive tendency to steal almost anything, especially skulls and bones and her melodic singing voice, said to even outshine the harpies on the beach.
-
In folklore, a mermaid is an aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including Europe, Asia, and Africa. Mermaids are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks, and drownings. In other folk traditions (or sometimes within the same traditions), they can be benevolent or beneficent, bestowing boons or falling in love with humans / human-like beings. The male and the female collectively are sometimes referred to as merfolk or merpeople.
The Western concept of mermaids as beautiful, seductive singers may have been influenced by the Sirens of Greek mythology, which were originally half-birdlike, but came to be pictured as half-fishlike in the Christian era. While there is no evidence that mermaids exist outside folklore, reports of mermaid sightings continue to the present day.
Mermaids have been a popular subject of art and literature in recent centuries, such as in Hans Christian Andersen's literary fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" (1836). They have subsequently been depicted in operas, paintings, books, comics, animation, and live-action films.
-
Her (battle) theme is LOVE THE SUBHUMAN SELF from Guilty Gear. She's deeply in love with the fellow high elf rogue turned vampire, Astarion Ancunín. Verses if they are in a romantic relationship are dependent here. Not gonna force anything. Her relationship with her mother Undyne is strained, as her mother is jealous and has tried various attempts on the young woman's life through the years, as Mermaids tend to be envious of anyone else and wish them dead.

OC Interview Questions! Sylvus, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 18, 20
5. What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
sylvus: honestly just enjoying traveling around i guess? considering i literally lived a good portion of my life in a cave, it's kinda nice to see new places.
7. Who do you look up to?
sylvus: that really depends on your definition of "looking up to", i guess. i got some parental and mentor figures in my life, but our relationships are a bit more complicated than just “looking up to”.
11. What is your favorite type of media (TV, movie, books, etc)? Name some specific favorites (which shows, movies, books, etc do you like)!
(this one’s a little hard to answer not knowing what kind of media is popular in the world but...)
sylvus: i admire the work of some artists and musicians, i guess. i don’t really think about it a lot.
13. You’re given an unlimited budget to build anything you want! What do you build and where do you build it?
sylvus: ideally i’d like to knock down some of the gentrified cities in the world and replace them with some more fucking equally built and designed cities. personally ripping all the fancy fucking gemstone shit from the big fancy temples to the seven in torlin. im gonna use that shit for something much better than making a fucking building look fancy.
17. What makes you laugh?
sylvus: hearing someone deliver a really good insult to someone who deserves it is always incredible.
18. What’s the best way to cheer you up?
sylvus: honestly a lot of the time when i’m by myself i’ll just fuck with my deck of cards and do little tricks with them just for my own amusement. it’s good practice with my sleight of hand and it calms me down.
20. Describe your biggest pet peeve.
sylvus: any kind of interaction with snotty rich people. or really authoritarian types. especially if they are actually in a position of power.

Realizing I've accidentally created an extra character layer for how Gortash presents himself—
This normally happens in 1482, but in moving the death of Gorion's Ward up to 1456 in my own fic canon, for me it happens much closer to then. (It wouldn't be Torlin as pictured, he would have been too young then for me, but maybe an ancestor of his?)
Tumblr media
(screenshot from the Murder in Baldur's Gate campaign)
I have Gortash born around 1450, so this is the Baldur's Gate he would have grown up in as a child before going to the hells. People were literally having jewels ripped off their clothes or lace collars cut off, if they weren't born into nobility!!
Hmm, the birth of an extra layer of hereditary patriar resentment right there (and no wonder he goes on to wear so much gold)

Send 🔬 for the reverse (maybe another inquisitor, one of those unhinged ones found lance) @theunaligneddemonprince
Send ⚗ to discover my muse locked in a cell at a laboratory after being experimented on for several years
It wasn’t often Alethea had reason to visit the base of a fellow Inquisitor, but he’d asked her opinion on a sensitive topic. Ordo Malleus business.
So it was she found herself escorted through a lab of sorts. It gave her an unpleasant feeling of de ja vu, but it’s swallowed down as she observed everything. The Inquisitor was nearly bursting with pride at himself to show her his ‘biggest success’, unveiling… Lance. A very battered, tormented, and bound Lance, held in place with chains and sigils.
She sighed, her reaction carefully one of general unimpressed boredom, disguising her surprise - there had been quiet wondering as to where the daemon had disappeared to. “So you captured a daemonhost. Why call me?” Her green gaze goes to her fellow Inquisitor, cold and indifferent.
“Because, Crescere, I want your input on this,” he explains, gesturing to a paper covered in ink. It was far more complicated than the bindings that presently held Lance where he was - and likely far above the man’s abilities.
“You want to try to control him?”
“It’s just a daemon in a corpse, right? The right runes, and all that power will be mine to command.” Alethea appeared to be thinking.
“This one is unnecessary, and risks countering the sealing.” She finally says, tapping on the paper. As the man chatters an ‘of course, how could I be so foolish?’ to himself, busily correcting the schematic, Alethea glanced to Lance. If she hadn’t been wearing her helmet, she would have winked. “Inquisitor Torlin, do you mind if I observe?” She asked, tone curious.
“Of course not, my dear! Perhaps you’d even assist?”
“It would be my pleasure, sir.” And so she’d help with the careful adding of the sigils in preparation for what her fellow wanted to attempt.
And as Torlin began, Lance would become aware of Alethea’s sabotage: the binding sigils broke entirely, leaving the chains as only chains. And his captor was entirely unprotected before him.

So @y-rhywbeth2 asked about Manva and views on motherhood after reading Blood and Bone, Bone and Blood
And I’m gonna use it as an opportunity to dive into a bit of Manva lore! Because reproductive stuff and parent stuff is really key to her.
It's going under the cut for length and for discussions of bodily trauma, bhaalist style incest and breeding nonsense, and some dub-to-non-con stuff.
Manva has a complicated relationship to the idea of motherhood (ha, what an opening sentence.) There's a great deal of thematic work around the idea of the mother in Blood and Bone, Bone and Blood and honestly there could have been a lot more in there that I ended up cutting. I'll come to that later, but let's start at the top.
Manva like most Dark Urge's that adhere to canon was not born but made, but unlike some in canon she also didn't have proper foster parents - she was left at the temple of Ilmater and due to the fact she didn't cry and had red hair (red being a sacred colour) and they had just taken in a woman who had lost her baby, they took her to be a gift to the temple. The woman nursed her, but then left again to rejoin her husband and left Manva behind. Manva grew up being told that she had been wetted with the tears of grief and swallowed the pain from her wet nurse. Everything in the temple of Ilmater conditioned her to understand taking on sacrifice, and she saw herself as absorbing the sadness of her wet nurse/mother figure so that she could leave and live her life again.
Then when she goes to the Bhaalist temple aged 13, after coming into her majority (getting her first blood which incidentally is when Sceleritas is born from her in a quasi birth from her period) she steps into a new world again, where she is told about her holy mission and purpose, and dedicates herself to it. But Bhaal does not rule with the carrot only. He is always keen to stir up competition in his ranks. "Grandfather" Sarevok tells Manva when she is still very young that should she fail, should she fall, he is tasked with filling her with the next generation of spawn, making her an endless vessel and it understandably fills her with fear, especially with the recent horror of Sceleritas crawling from her fully formed (I'm still undecided whether this is Bhaal's instruction, or a mind game, but for this purpose it doesn't really matter.) But it's also the first time she's ever considered sex, and with her understanding that she must take on great sacrifice, she also begins to slightly fetishise this fear. The idea of being desired and sacrificing her body in that way is a little sexy, even if the reality is not. Thanks, religious trauma. This is combined with her relationship to the then chosen, Torlin Silvershield, makes for a complicated time in her life.
Torlin is quite a traditional Bhaalist in a lot of ways. A man of means, connected and erudite, whose Bhaalist life is almost a fun club away from his real life. He is handsome and charming and belongs to a world that neither Manva or Orin understand at this point in their lives. He has his own family, his own life away from them. Both of them want to impress him and, vain man that he is, he indulges this. Eventually Manva wins out for his favour during her time as the Butcher of Baldur's Gate, but it is a bitter win; she wants him to be a mentor, a father-figure, and he sees the purest Bhaalspawn as a prize potential mistress, and his sexual attentions are devastating to her.
When he does lose his status, and when she can finally make decisions for herself, she decides to maintain her perceived celibacy (after all who needs sex when you have Bhaal's gift of ecstatic murder, and also the things she does to Orin in a fit of anger don't count.) She does right until she meets Gortash. And, I guess, she maintains it, as she does not allow anything that would risk getting with child, and he doesn't do anything to her that might risk her losing control of her strength and accidentally killing him. His desire for her is both tantalising and terrifying to her. He is a great risk.
Then Ketheric comes into the picture and all of these threads pull apart.
Ketheric can see the growing intimacy between her and Gortash, and he needles at it softly because he sees how ridiculous it is. These are broken children who are playing up for his attention, and it's pathetic to him. She's never really seen a person who loved their child before - Torlin was the closest, but he kept his children and life so far away from them - and she is fascinated by it. He would do all of this because he loves his daughter. All of it! He would become undead, he would sacrifice his very soul. She's envious, and wants his attentions as the father figure, but it also makes her think for the first time about what it would be like to choose to have a child. Around this time Gortash is also considering whether he will take a patriar wife pretty much only to have children and a legacy, and they are bringing back Isobel. It makes her have the first thread of desire for something truly for herself. Why do they get the opportunity to feel that feeling, and she doesn't?
I think, whether she realises it fully or (likely) not, that there is a part of her that would like a simple life that she has constantly been denied. The opportunity for love, and to nurture life, to feel secure and to feel seen. She has been a servant to others' needs her whole life, even before she knew she was the Bhaalsdaughter, and by the time she instigates the most toxic sexual relationship of all time with Ketheric (daddy AND daughter issues? literally pulling each other apart during and after? All of the damage caused by Bhaal, Sarevok and Torlin and the desire she cannot have sated by Gortash all coming out at once? Delicious) the strain of that and the desire for more is starting to show.
In the end, it is the Netherbrain that gives her that opportunity. The Brain reads her deepest desire and agrees to be the surrogate for her. The tadpoles will be birthed across the world, and she will be the all-mother to all the creatures it creates. Manva is part of her design, the co-parent, the nurturer of the end of everything, so that something may be born anew.
