The new "Scott Pilgrim" animated television show is going to reignite my burning desire to write a Scott Pilgrim AU for SVSSS, I know it. I don't have time, but I still WANT to write a Modern AU about these losers fucking around Toronto, and "getting out of the city to clear my head" only to reveal that they went to fucking Mississauga or something, and, idk, getting stuck on the 401 for some reason.
I don't like matching characters up perfectly to other characters in AUs, or forcing them along the exact plots of the media being used as an AU, because I like letting Fusion AUs unfold as naturally as possible. It makes things more surprising and it keeps the characterization strong.
But Shen Yuan is Scott, obviously, who desperately needs to level up his emotional maturity. Luo Binghe is probably a combo of Knives and Ramona, and it's HIS "exes" of some kind that Shen Yuan needs to fight (the final "ex" is revealed to be Shen Jiu or something, probably). Airplane Bro is Shen Yuan's roommate (it's Shen Yuan's apartment) and it STUNS Shen Yuan to realize that his stallion-novel-writing older roommate is gay. I don't really know what Mobei-Jun is doing in this AU, but his most important "superpower" is probably that he's the only one who actually owns a car AND has his full G license.
The truly exciting thing would be bringing in Shen Yuan's sister (the one who apparently reads gay non-con bondage erotica and accidentally scared Shen Yuan with it) in as Stacey Pilgrim. It would be fun to explore Shen Yuan's family dynamics for once.
Also, you can totally keep demons and the System and potentially even transmigration in as background elements, because that's just what "Scott Pilgrim" is like. Yeah, yeah, the Secret P.A.T.H. on Spadina Avenue that you can take to the Cultivation Realm so that you can level up your fighting skills over the summer break, we've all heard about it. You can also get there on a Go Train from Union Station, but it's only running at like 7 AM for some reason.
"Once upon a time, in the far off land of Toronto, Canada... Shen Yuan is dating a high-schooler..."
"HE'S IN UNIVERSITY! AND WE'RE NOT DATING! I'M JUST TUTORING HIM."
"Lol, okay, bro."

Naomi Kritzer's "Liberty's Daughter"
Tumblr media
Tomorrow (November 22), I'll be joined by Vass Bednar at the Toronto Metro Reference Library for a talk about my new novel, The Lost Cause, a preapocalyptic tale of hope in the climate emergency.
Tumblr media
There's so much sf about "competent men" running their families with entrepreneurial zeal, clarity of vision and a firm confident hand. But there's precious little fiction about how much being raised by a Heinlein dad would suuuck. But it would, and in Naomi Kritzer's Liberty's Daughter, we get a peek inside the nightmare:
https://fairwoodpress.com/store/p148/LIBERTY%27S_DAUGHTER.html
Beck Garrison is a seasteader, living on a floating platform built by libertarian cranks to get away from big government, taxes, and the idea that people owe each other care and consideration. Various kinds of market trufans have built their own fiefdoms: there's a sin city, a biotech free-for-all, a lawless Mad Max zone, and so on.
Beck's father, Paul, is some kind of local functionary. He's wealthy and respected, both a power-broker and a power in his own right. He pays for Beck to get private tutoring (no public schools – no public anything) and if she needs bailing out from some kind of sticky situation, he's got her on his account with Alpha Dogs, the toughest mercenaries on the sea (no police, either). An armed society is a polite society, after all.
Beck has a job, naturally (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch). She's a finder: for all that the steaders worship commerce as a sacrament consecrated to the holy Invisible Hand, there's not a lot of retail at sea. California – the nearest onshore neighbor – has lots of pesky taxes, and besides, it's a long ways off. Besides, space is at a premium on the stead, so people don't have attics and basements to fill with excess consumer junk.
Instead, when a steader needs something – a shoelace, a fashion accessory, or any other creature comfort – they hire a finder like Beck to clamber around between the decks of the aircraft carriers, scows, yachts and other vessels comprising the stead. It's a good way for Beck to earn spending money, and she's a natural at it. After all, she's been a steader since she was four, when her mother died in a drunk driving accident and her father took her to sea.
The story opens with a finding job. Beck wants a pair of sparkly shoes for her client, and the woman who owns them is an indentured servant whose sister has gone missing. Find the sister, get the shoes.
Indentured servant? Yeah, of course. Freedom of contract is the one freedom from which all the others flow, so you can sell yourself into bond labor. Hell, maybe you can earn enough to buy a share in the stead and become a co-owner/citizen.
This is the setup for Beck's adventure, which sees her liberating bond slaves tricked into fatal work details, getting involved in reality TV production, meeting illegal IWW organizers, and becoming embroiled in a pandemic that threatens the lives of all the steaders. It's a coming of age novel, told with the same straightforward, spunky zeal of Heinlein's juvies, but from the perspective of the daughter, not the dad.
Kritzer makes it clear that growing up under the thumb of a TANSTAAFL-worshipping, self-regarding, wealthy autocrat who worships selfishness as the necessary precondition for market clearing would be a goddamned nightmare. She also thinks through some of the important implications of life in one of these offshore libertarian archipelagos, like the fact that the wealthy residents would be overwhelming drawn from the ranks of corporate criminals and tax-cheats, and the underclass would be bail-skipping proles ensnared in the War on Drugs.
But Liberty's Daughter isn't a hymn to big government. Most of the steaders are escaping the US government, a state whose authoritarian and cruel proclivities are well-documented. Kritzer uses the labor dispute at the core of the novel to reveal market authoritarianism – the coercive power that hunger and poverty transfers from the have-nots to the haves. Think of Anatole France's wry observation that "the law, in its majestic equality, equally forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread."
If you're familiar with Kritzer's work, you won't be surprised to learn that she tells a zippy, fast moving tale that smuggles in sharp observations about the cleavage lines between solidarity and selfishness. Her story "So Much Cooking" – published years before the pandemic – captured life under lockdown with eerie prescience:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/17/pack-of-knaves/#so-much-cooking
More recently, her "Better Living Through Algorithms" is a dazzling display of knifework that'll cut you a dozen times before you even notice that you're bleeding:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/02/wunderkammer/#jubillee
If you habitually read Kritzer's short fiction, Liberty's Daughter might be familiar to you, as it is adapted from a series of stories that originally ran in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Kritzer's YA debut, Catfishing on the CatNet, was also adapted from a short story, "Cat Pictures Please," which won the Hugo Award in 2016:
https://boingboing.net/2019/11/19/setec-astronomy-kitteh.html
"Libertarian exit" – buying a country, or an archipelago, or just a luxury bunker – has been in the air lately. It's a major element of my new novel, The Lost Cause, which came out this month – anarchocapitalist wreckers try to sabotage the Green New Deal from the seastead they've moored to the tallest point in the drowned Grand Caymans and declared to be a sovereign nation:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865939/the-lost-cause
Kritzer is great at catching that zeitgeist. Seasteading is part of a long, bitter dream of a certain kind of selfish person to escape society, a tale told in lurid and fascinating detail in Raymond Craib's 2022 history Adventure Capitalism:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/06/14/this-way-to-the-egress/#terra-nullius
There's a longstanding joke to the effect that you can shut down any discussion of the merits of a libertarian exit by asking three questions about the brave new world:
Whether you can sell your organs;
Whether you can sell yourself into slavery; and
Whether there is any age of consent.
Kritzer tackles the first two, but tacks around the third. Instead, by giving us a young adult protagonist who has been raised in a rusting libertopia, she finds a decidedly less incendiary way to think about the role of autonomy in adolescents, and thus generates far more light than heat.
The result is a cracking read with a sting in its tail.
Tumblr media

gods as someone that was raised in several churches (mom minister so I got all the shitty behind the scenes drama starting at like 4yo and never really believed beyond general agnostic-ish feelings. which apparently is a super common trend for pastor/minister kids to nope tf out of the church asap) the 'forcing you to be The Right Christian™ Or You Don't Deserve™™ Charity' thing hits hard. especially when I psych myself out of asking for help because I'm constantly remembering how openly hostile some of those places are to even poor christian people using their services.
like one particular church (the "open and affirming" one that threw the only trans woman out of the 20 person congregation because the old white guy treasurer learned she was trans after like 8 years and suddenly didn't want to look at her, or "worse", hear her sing) had a monthly meal for the (very poor neighborhood) community. they'd make everyone pray to God for 20 minutes before letting anyone touch even a slice of bread, but lock them out of the sanctuary during church hours because they were, I wish I was joking and that this wasn't a direct quote, "dirty homeless looters". you had to pray correctly to get food but don't you dare sully the churches doorstep trying to attend worship. meanwhile the church people organizing it are going off about how dare these people be standing in line for food instead of attending church as Real Good Christians Should.
🙃
That's fucking frightening and unfortunately I have my own similar stories.
Tw for racism, homophobia, anti-Muslim, and just... really bad stereotypes.
One of the reasons I started walking away from the church (there's a couple reasons) was at our summer mission trip (yes, I know.) In previous years, we had kept local: deep cleaning the homeless shelter, renovating the local Latino advocacy building, soup kitchen stuff. But one of the (more wealthy) girls in our group wanted to try doing a mission abroad.
Best we could do is Toronto.
We signed up with a shelter there and they gave us some tasks. The shelter REALLY played up how bad it was in this part of town- the gang violence, the culture of sin, the regressive way the men treat women in their home country.
So like... I'm from America. I've been to Chicago. Not to compare but like... hmm..
So during the introduction to how terrible it is in Toronto (...?) Our ambassador takes us through parts of town to show us what it's like to be homeless there. It was a very somber thing. We were given a small amount of money and we were to pretend it was all we had. Try to survive on a few coins.
We take our tour. Remember that this is supposed to scare us.
She takes us to an area where we hear drums. We hide behind a building. "You hear those drums? This is a homeless village. Young people come here seeking community, but you will be turned away if you cannot provide a service for them. They will only use your body for so long."
So... I'd been to drum circles before. And this was very much a drum circle. Like sure these people were a little crunchy, but it was pretty clear to me that these guys were just cutting loose after the day of work.
She takes us to the red light district.
"This is the red light district," she says. "This is where all the homosexuals come. You see that there are many young people here who are attracted to the high life. But you will see: the older men will always come looking for the younger one's to manipulate and that's how many homeless people become prostitutes."
I, a half-in-half-out of the closet lesbian, for the first time in my life, saw two happy gay men arm in arm and it was moving for me. I saw people having a good time. I'd already figured out she was full of shit. Now I was mad.
So we get back to the church we're staying at and I'm already having second thoughts about this visit to Canada. She tells us that our mission this week is to tutor some Somali kids in English and math.
... I feel... oncoming dread.
They didn't give us a lesson, plan or anything. Were supposed to just help them learn where they're stuck in their lessons. And then on Friday we'll have a trip to the museum of science and industry.
I was the only one in our group that had ever encountered a Muslim to know that Friday was their holy day. And that was when I realized that it was a conversion tactic. I asked her about it like... 'is Friday really a good time to do that?' And she was like 'well, it's the last day you'll be here and we want to celebrate don't we?'
And I was livid, but I was in a different country with a bunch of people who believed this woman's lies. And I didn't say anything to my friends because I was already kind of an outcast there, no one was going to believe me.
So I held my tongue, but from then on I lost a lot of respect for Christian-run charities and even now I'll always be looking for their angle.

EXTRAS.
𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐏𝐇𝐘.
Dr. Rohan Abbasi first came to the Foundation’s attention shortly following the defense and subsequent publication of his master’s thesis, entitled “Correlation between the potency of hallucinogens in the mouse head-twitch response assay and their behavioral and subjective effects in other species.” (Neuropharmacology 2014). An auspicious start for someone who was, of his own admission, little more than a glorified lab grunt prior to the manuscript’s completion. The Foundation’s growing interest in Dr. Abbasi swiftly followed with his continuing doctoral research into the treatment of complex-PTSD and psychopathies with medical-grade psychedelics and hallucinogens.  Records indicate this culmination of Dr. Abbasi’s academic focus to be some combination of chance — with a Research Assistantship in Professor Szymanski’s research group at the University of Toronto open, and Rohan Abbasi in need of additional funding — and a longer trend of interest in and unorthodox approaches to pharmacology and medicine. It was with this in mind that a small but robustly funded lab at site-17 solicited a freshly minted Dr. Abbasi to interview for an opening postdoctoral research position within the group.  In the seven years since his tenure at the Foundation began, Dr. Rohan Abbasi’s reputation and portfolio tell vastly different stories of the same man. Colleagues and close personal acquaintances of Dr. Abbasi consistently praise the discipline, energy, and creativity he brings to research settings. Indeed, much of Dr. Abbasi’s early career at the Foundation is categorized by a nearly unending stream of proposals submitted, findings published, journal clubs established, and special interest committees formed. It became, however, the concern of his hiring supervisor that such enthusiasm and, frankly, naivete would outstrip the professional demands of this particular role. Following agreement from all parties, Dr. Abbasi’s fellowship continued under the supervision of the Keir group.  Thus, a pattern began to emerge. Dr. Abbasi filled his new position with what former colleagues would now consider characteristic effusiveness and vigor. Rohan himself jumped between several projects, submitting additional proposals for each with or without final approval from his new supervisor, nearly all of which were, unsurprisingly, summarily rejected. This had seemingly little effect on Dr. Abbasi’s commitment to proposing outlandish, unorthodox, unrealistic, and in more than a few cases downright insulting avenues of research or applications of novel (often as-yet-unreplicated) findings.   Neither Dr. Abbasi nor his new team were under any illusions, then, on the circumstances and stakes surrounding the assumption of his third post, now in the Anomalous Entity Engagement Division. Indeed, it seems he has finally understood the precarious situation he has continuously engaged in, and has pivoted to bolstering his professional reputation alongside his personal. It’s with this mutual agreement that Dr. Abbasi has been encouraged to continue his work on class B amnestics.

🌸4⭐️TOWN HEADCANONS🌸
♪♫.ılılıll|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|llılılı.♫♪
🌹Robaire🌹
He’s 20 years old. He is the second oldest member of 4*TOWN. The members and fans call him mum because he’s below Jesse in the age ranking 😀
Robaire was very popular in high school. He had lot’s of dating drama with girls. Many people assumed he dated a hell of a lot of girls in HS, but in fact he dated a total of 2, (one of them he still likes and can’t get over them 🤭)
He’s the most romantic boy of the group, beating all the members with experience in flirting and sensuality. With these skills he makes himself to be an excellent performer and engages the audience quickly with his charm!
He really, uh, enjoys sex songs. He’s a big daydreamer, so whenever he listens to songs containing lyrics about sex he thinks about doing “things” to his crush 😻
Moved a lot when he was kid, he was born in Toronto but moved to other countries around the world before he decided to go ahead with singing. His parents work forced them to move quite a bit.
One day, when Robaire moved to the U.S, he told his parents he wants to start a band, but they didn’t accept his choice, and scolded him for it. That night, he climbed out of his window and bought a computer with his money, and started a website for the auditions and the competition. He told his parents that he entered an after school math club and they believed him, but he got a room at school to host the auditions.
At one point, people in school found out about it and tried to audition as a joke but none of them were accepted 💀
He gives off major libra vibes. They are extremely flirty and romantic people, but he’s got a lot of earth in his chart.
He’s definitely an ENFJ, end of story.
Loves RnB.
🌊Jesse🌊
Had two kids, but it wasn’t planned. His girlfriend who had the kids forced Jesse to deal with them and left him in the dark. He had to leave art school because he worked full time and had to take care of the kids at the same time. He still loves them to bits.
He was scouted by numerous modeling agency for his tall, blonde and handsome appearance. But he didn’t listen to any of them until Robaire was on the street asking people to audition to join his band, and he seemed quite intrigued by him, so he signed up. Jesse already had an amazing singing voice and Robaire immediately accepted Jesse into the band!
Fans know he has two kids, and they know the whole story of what happened. They didn’t bash him for having kids because he told them early on in the band.
Jesse is 22 years old, he is the oldest out of all the members. Most people expected him to be around 25 but he’s a lot younger. He’s known as the dad of the band.
He gets a long really well with Tae Young and they often hang out to go museums and sanctuaries/zoos.
Jesse was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, but moved to Chicago when he was 12 years old. He’s got a small accent but it’s barely noticeable.
He gives off Sagittarius vibes, I feel like he just has that energy. The part of the movie where he kissed his hand it’s just RADIATES sag vibes.
He’s probably an Estp no shit
🍄Tae Young🍄
Tae Young was born in Busan, South Korea, he learned English at home and with help of special tutors, because at the time K-POP was rising, but he felt they didn’t treat the idols properly, and he aspired to become big in the west, so he decided to become fluent in English.
Tae young is the youngest, he’s around 16 or 17 years old, and he’s the cutest of the group. He might be the cutest to outsiders, but he’s not all that innocent.
He was searching everywhere for auditions to bands or entertainment agency’s, when he stumbled upon Robaire’s flyer online, so he immediately signed up to it. When he went to audition, his angelic voice and dance moves amazed Robaire and he was casted into the group. At first he had to compete in a round with 5 other contestants but he was the one who had the most skill out of all of them.
One day he was visiting Yellowstone National park, and he fell in love with the wildlife and the birds, so his parents let him get a pet bird. He absolutely adored his bird and volunteered in an animal rescue shelter helping the wildlife.
He radiates cancer energy end of story.
Tae is definitely an INFP, there is no other explanation lmao
🌤Aaron T🌤
Aaron T is 17/18 years old
He’s Brazilian, but moved to Australia at the age of 1 when his parents got new jobs. I can see him moving to Sydney first and then Melbourne when his parents jobs switched cities. He was quite a light skinned boy compared to his parents but he became extremely interested in surfing and skateboarding, so he spent the 90s outside in the harsh Australian sun, so he eventually became olive because of the amount of time he spent outside.
In primary school, there was a local dance centre in Melbourne near his school, so he signed up to it and learned how to dance and sing, which really aided him in his career. He became really interested in singing and rapping, and began practising every day in his room.
He was always a bright, outgoing boy. Even though some people didn’t like him, he still kept positive. People at school liked him a lot, and was chill with him. He mostly had friends who he met at the skate park at st Kilda, one of the few areas that became available in Melbourne for skating.
He speaks Portuguese at home and has a moderate Aussie accent.
Unfortunately one day when he was 16 his parents informed him they had to move to the U.S.A because they found new jobs, which upset him because he grew up in completely different environment than the U.S. he had to accept it eventually.
When he was surfing the web, he saw Robaire’s flyer of his band audition, so when his family was visiting the city it was in, he secretly went and auditioned and got in!
Radiates Aquarius or Gemini energy.
He’s definitely an ENFP or ESFP
🌙Aaron Z🌙
He’s 19 years old
Aaron Z was born in New Orleans and then moved to New York when he was 4 years old because his parents wanted him to grow up there.
When he was in high school, he fell in love with the NBA, and it became his main interest to become a professional basket baller. But one day, his parents encouraged him to sign up to a theatre program at school, and he found he has a talent for singing. Fun fact, the first time he sang, people were expecting nothing much since he was a little bit of a loner when he was younger, but he blew them away with an angelic voice.
He was a very shy boy in school, but since he was on the basketball team, a lot of girls liked him for his stoic attitude. They found him mysterious and like him for that.
He's definitely a virgo or taurus. radiates ISTP vibes for the stoicness
When he was walking through the hallway one day, he heard some classmates talking about a person holding a singing competition to audition in a band, and he stopped and asked them who was holding it.
