In 2003, I released my first EP. It was called Ocean. I was earnest, bright-eyed, hopeful. One thing I was not? Cool. I liked cool things, but I looked at them from afar. I liked US pop culture more. If they were dishing it, I was eating it. After 20 years, I listen back to this little EP, and I can hear noughties influences. I was drowning in butterflies, tulle, shimmery eye shadow, fairies, and metallic everything - audibly and visually.
The records on the EP came from the songs I had written as a teenager on my bedroom floor with a guitar borrowed from a friend.
I was a Coastie of the Central Coast variety ‘til 2002 when my Sydney-based musician friend, convinced me to move to Sydney. We used to write music together. Before that, back on the Coast, I was writing and playing with a bunch of guys. We played Kincumber Mountain, the Avoca Beach Theatre, the Terrigal Markets... I had a nose piercing and I would sing Ben Harper covers along with my own material. Once I wore a sweat towel that belonged to the late Juan Nelson, bass player of Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. I tied it around my jeans. My friend had obtained the crotchet towel for me when Juan threw it into the crowd at a gig. My mum and dad would come watch me at the markets. After those gigs in Terrigal, we would go and have coffee at Aromas on Church St. That café is no longer there. I loved that place.
Once I had written enough material in Sydney, we went into the studio to record my songs. I found a guy named Luke to produce it. I tracked with some other guys from the Central Coast named Gus and his brother Luke who had some very nice recording gear that I believe used to belong to INXS. I had a mixture of musicians from the Coast and Sydney. Great players. Tim, Matt, Nigel, Mike, Peter. My good friend Lindsay sang background vocals - when we paused from our hysterical laughing long enough for the engineer to actually record a proper take. After we tracked, we went up to Rocking Horse Studios in Byron Bay for a few days, and an engineer named Brendan Anthony mixed the songs. I loved working with Brendan. He had good stories about people he had worked with. He affirmed my ideas. We would bounce songs to CDs and all go for drives to the beach to listen to the mixes (RIP car speaker tests). We all played table tennis. We all took exactly, um, zero (i.e., 0) photos.  We would bounce more mix ideas and listen in the cottage. I returned to Sydney with a stack of compact discs for Don Bartley, the mastering engineer at Studios 301. In 2003, 301 was located at 301 Castlereagh St, Sydney. And so, there I was, unsure if one sat in on a mastering session or not. I went with, yes, just sit in on it. I had nothing to do for those hours. In order to break up the day, I scheduled a break to procure myself a skinny latte (another 2000s cliché - and a coffee order that I refused to let go of until 2020; a metaphor, if ever). I drank it slowly while I sat on the couch behind Don. There were a few books and zines on the coffee table. I read every word. But I didn’t leave. I was utterly clueless, utterly still. I didn’t want to miss a moment of this process. When he finished mixing, he turned around and gave me great encouragement in my songwriting.
This year is the 20 year anniversary of Ocean - an album that would open little doors. From some great gigs in Newtown supporting Vika and Linda Bull at the Bridge Hotel, Jenny Morris at The Sandringham (at that gig, one of her companions, Jon Farris left me a little starry-eyed when he came up to me and let me know he liked our sound that evening -  so I gave him one of my CDs. Did he take it with him? Who can say? But who cares. Not I. Not then. Not now. I played The Vanguard when it was called “The Vanguard” the first time round. I played in New Zealand. I played wherever I could get a stage. I would scour the Drum Media newspaper for new venue ideas. Sometimes I took the band, sometimes I just took a keyboard. I had my name listed with a booking agency, waiting for calls to be invited to play somewhere, anywhere. My song Superyou got a bit of radio play. I took my EP to some record executive who really liked it but wanted me to boost my profile by landing a role on Neighbours. I actually found an agency and got some shots done to try my hand at television. But as I walked out of the photographic studio, I knew I wasn’t being myself.
The more I think about my writing and recording endeavours, the more I realise I was smack back in the middle of a cultural transition. As I look to the context in which my music was birthed, I understand it was well and truly the end of the 90s, and into the new millennium. The live music scene was dying in the early noughties. We were all working out what it would take to survive the transition. I once supported a major artist, and I brought the bigger crowd. That was strange. No one knew what was going on. Communities formed online. Tumblr. Blogs. Wordpress. The noughties would end with me writing for Mia Freedman (another story for another time). But the noughties marked the beginning of the end of magazines, the era of fashion blogs, the seeds of the influencers. And 2003? Well, that was the moment of transition. The world was somewhat cleaning itself up, making way for, my goodness, Australian Idol, Facebook, iTunes. We steamed the vomit out of the carpet. We didn’t save the Sando, Newtown. Regulations came in. Rules came in.  Pokies came in.  Branding. Marketing. Copywriting.
I have curated somewhat of a museum here on Tumblr (seemed fitting) as an ode to my first EP, Ocean, the first of four projects I would make over the next twenty years. Voiceless (2011) and Carry On (2016) would follow. My new album Familiar Drama comes out soon. Take Me Back to the City, the first of ten songs, is out now. Love, petals, and tiaras, Jules xo

WE LOST THE SEA - TRIUMPH & DISASTER
Our good friends from We Lost The Sea have just announced their new album 'TRIUMPH & DISASTER', due out October 4th via The Bird's Robe Collective.
We are excited to announce that we'll have an exclusive Beatdisc Records vinyl pressing for the album! More info in the coming weeks but get in touch if you'd like to pre-order.
Here's all the info via WLTS' post...
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
We are extremely proud to present our new album Triumph & Disaster and the first track 'Towers'
Pre-orders are now available through our Bandcamp page. http://welostthesea.bandcamp.com/
Triumph & Disaster is a post-apocalyptic view on the collapse of the world told like a children’s story and illustrated through the eyes of a mother and her son as they spend one last day on Earth. The music is the narrative for the destruction and tragedy. The words tell the story of love, loss and letting go.
This was probably one of the hardest things we’ve ever done. Some times were good and other times it really sucked. We really felt the pressure of Departure Songs on our backs the whole time and it was hard to push through that. We needed to rise to the occasion on all levels. It sort of made the writing process, which can be really cathartic, joyous and wonderful, into something that, at times, was an unenjoyable slog. We wanted to do something that was ours and as original as we could make it from the story to the music and in the process leave behind the sad memorial that was DS. That struggle comes through in the music. The push and pull from each other and against the huge themes and ideas we tried to represent. This is the first time we’ve written such an intentional and determined album. It’s more bolder, mature and sonically dense than anything we’ve done previously.
We’re beyond proud, excited and exhausted to present you the first track from it ’Towers’ which summarises all of those emotions in one song. Representing the beginning and the end of everything, it is about giant oppressive forces and feelings, the towering juggernaut of power, failure, history and death.
We’ll be playing a special ‘album preview’ show at the Vanguard in Newtown, Sydney on the 24th of August. It will be a really intimate one-off show, with more to come later in the year. We’ll only be selling 150 tickets so get in early. We can’t wait to share it with you.
Pre-orders are now available through our Bandcamp page. http://welostthesea.bandcamp.com/
Triumph & Disaster is out October 4 via Bird's Robe Records (Australia) and October 25 via Translation Loss (US), Holy Roar (UK) and Dunk!Records (EU).

June Nights Out
This weekend made up for all those involuntary nights in.
Friday
I headed straight from work to Newtown to meet up with the cast of the play I directed, to watch a gig at the Vanguard where we did the play. This time last year, we would have just done the read through. The Vanguard has only recently re-opened for live music gigs in Sydney’s post pandemic revival. A few of the cast couldn’t make it, but my favourites were there, meaning Alex, Daniela and Martin.
I got a parking spot directly opposite the venue and celebrated with the man who parked behind me as we realised the clearway ended just on 6.00 PM when we arrived. When I went into the venue, it was eerily nostalgic. I felt like I had been transported to a year ago. The ghost of myself hung about different parts of the venue, as if the play had only been staged a week before and no time has passed.
I don’t do live music gigs. I explained this to the girl with glasses and a short bob who asked to stamp my hand upon entrance and I offered her the wrong side of my hand. We were seated upstairs and the owner of the joint joined us, our former producer, who kept shouting me old fashions. Daniela and I got Moroccan pies that we jokingly said we would crumble into each others mouths. Instead we ate holding hands.
I really enjoy both Alex and Martin’s company. They’re incredibly decent, easy to talk to men. They’re both very warm, non-judgmental company. Daniela and I always fawn over each other. The band, Georgia June, were also fantastic. I had zero expectations but loved them. Apparently, the lead singer was Greek. She had a Marina Diamandis vibe in a powder blue power suit and I was a little enamoured by her. All the boys in the band had long hair and weedy ‘80s moustaches. The bassist looked like Adam Driver.
One of the best parts about the night is that it started at 6.00 PM and ended at 9.30 PM. To make up for the fewer people able to attend because of social distancing, the venue is doing two seatings for their shows. I tried to convince Arash to keep this up indefinitely because I would never come to a show that concludes at midnight. I was pretty certain I was over the alcohol limit, despite pacing myself, and my paranoia seemed to draw police cars to me. I kept seeing them in the distance on the drive home and diverting down backstreets, but got home without getting pulled over.
Saturday
I spent all of Saturday filming for a project I’m working on (a Q+A series) and got home feeling drained, but I had plans to go out with my gal pal and work mate Olivia and her boyfriend. It is one of my favourite date combos, an Italian restaurant in Summer Hill followed by the Temprance Society, one of my favourite suburban bars.
Temprance was crowded despite social distancing and we could only stay until 8.00 PM because a party of ten was booked upstairs. Still, we snuck in for drinks. I got an old fashion (I could drink old fashions until the day I die), we sat on the chesterfields and talked. I recognise all the bar staff now, including the soulful black American man and the gorgeous girl who looks like Rose Weasley. There was a dog I patted on the way to the bathroom and as I stood up, I came nose to nose with the beautiful black waiter and said “Such a cute dog,” and he grinend back and exclaimed “I know!”
When we got kicked out, we went next door to Rio’s, which was also crowded but a little less so. We got the window seat. Liv clipped off a leaf from a crawling pot plant to propogate. I ordered a new cocktail. The vibe and the music was good. At one point, You’re Welcome from the Moanna soundtrack came on. This guy sitting near us at the bar cheered and began singing, as did Harrison and I, and the three of us did the song karaoke style. I know most of the words and was quite impressive.
Again, I was home ealry and asleep by 11.00 PM. It was a wonderful weekend. It quelled a little of my loneliness, my restlessness.
