#i read vox machina origins when i first got into the fandom #there were some good moments (mostly keyleth ily) but it was weirdly boring #mostly because of how the comic is laid out in volume i #it's a lot of text on the page #whereas 2 and 3 feel like actual comics #that make use of the medium

I don't want to be alone tonight

This text originated from the scene on episode 42, and then @tiamat-zx sent this prompt, which I added to what I had already written. This text contains spoilers for Keyleth and Vax's meeting in Vox Machina Origins, Volume 1, and episodes 39-42 of campaign 1. This means a lot to me, and I hope you all enjoy it <3

Keyleth paced around in her room, much emptier and colder than it had been for the previous weeks. Her bed had been taken down to the temple to offer some sort of comfort to the refugees, so all she had was a small cot and a pile of blankets. It didn’t bother her, she knew that she could use her beast shape to transform into Minxie and curl up on the ground for the night and that she would be fine. 

Catha was high in the sky, and her armor lay on the ground by the cot, as she had recently taken it off to change her dirty, blood-stained clothes. Keyleth didn’t trust the calmness of the night, not while she could see the light of embers in the direction of Emon, so she decided that it would be best if she slept with her armor. She was about to pick it up when there was a soft knock on her door, so soft she thought she had imagined it.

Vax held his breath. He hadn’t heard any noise from the other side of the door that would let him know Keyleth had heard him or that she was awake at all, and he was about to turn around and leave when there was a soft creak of hinges. Keyleth’s green eyes peeked through the small gap between the wooden door and its frame, defiant at first but soft and caring when they landed on him. 

“Hi.” Her voice was silky soft and sweet like honey, and Vax thought he could die just from hearing it. He tried to muster the courage that had led him there, to her bedroom door at such a late hour, but suddenly his mind was empty of words. 

Keyleth examined Vax, standing in the hallway, still in his armor, with a dumbfounded look. The events of that day ran through her mind, the dealings with the Clasp and how Vax had asked her to burn the tattoo on his back. Was he in pain? Is that why he had gone to see her? But if that was the case, why hadn’t he gone to Pike?

“Hi. I don’t want to be alone tonight, do you?” He finally mustered.

Oh. That’s why.

“I haven’t been wanting to be alone most nights.” Keyleth answered before she stepped away and opened the door to let him in.

Vax stood bashfully in the middle of her room, watching her close and lock the door behind her and admiring how her hair fell in waves down her back. He could remember the first time they met in the swamp, she was a squirrel, and he thought he was hallucinating when he saw her wave at him. He thought of the first time she healed him, the warm green glow of nature on her palms, and all the other times after that, and how the feeling never changed or how it felt like home. 

Keyleth crossed the room before he could say anything and wrapped her arms around his torso, laying her head on the crook of his neck. Vax was taken aback by the sudden movement, but after the last couple days they had, he wasn’t entirely surprised by her assurance, and neither was Keyleth when he wrapped his arms around her and leaned his cheek against her head. 

“Will you stay tonight?” She asked. She realized she wanted him to stay tonight, the next night, and all nights to come, but she wasn’t ready to let him know. Not yet.

“I’ll stay as long as you’ll have me.” He wanted nothing more than to stay with her forever, to hold her in his arms and never let go, but the time wasn’t right, and he would not force it. 

Keyleth’s soft, deft fingers found the buckled straps of his armor, and while they both wore the same kind of leather armor, Vax couldn’t hide a gasp of surprise as she started undoing them with practiced ease, letting it fall onto the floor next to hers.

A massive ancient red dragon was sitting on Emon, the city capital of Tal’Dorei, built hundreds of years ago, now crumbled to dust. The danger was real and close to home, closer to Vax and Keyleth, who had already suffered so much pain at the claws of Thordak himself, but neither of them wanted to think or talk about it. They felt safe with each other. Vax was a lethal shadow who could jump in on their enemies without a sound, while Keyleth was single-handedly capable of summoning lightning and storms, of taming rivers and flames, of moving mountains, and of flying on the brightest of the blue skies.

They lay together on the blankets, the cot not big enough for both, their faces so close that they could feel the other’s warm breath on their lips. Keyleth wrapped one arm around Vax’s torso and slid her hand inside his shirt, resting it on the burn mark between his shoulder blades.

“Does it hurt?” She asked softly. Vax shook his head. If you’ll have me, I’m yours, he had told her, and now he had her mark on his body. Knowing he loved her so much as to have her imprint on his body made her feel dizzy, like she had just woken up from a dream. No one had ever loved her like that. She never thought it was possible at all, and why would she? She was awkward and clumsy, others expected greatness from her, but she was too scared to fail, to disappoint them, to lead them astray. She was destined to a life of loneliness, to witness the death of those she loved and the birth and death of those she would learn to love afterward.

“Stop it.” Vax could see the train of thoughts in her eyes. “You’re amazing and strong, Kiki. You’re kind and gentle, and you will be a great leader to your people one day.”

Vax always knew what to say, he always knew what she was thinking and how to stop the bad thoughts. He brought a sense of calmness to her that she couldn’t describe, as if the faith he had in her was all she needed to move on. It was astonishing how sometimes he placed his faith in her so blindly and made her feel like some divine being.

“I love you.” Vax whispered. Keyleth’s eyes filled with joy, and her heart swelled with love. She might not be ready to say it back out loud but after all that had happened, she knew she couldn’t wait a second longer without him knowing how she felt, so she slowly closed whatever distance was between their mouths and pressed a soft, chaste kiss to Vax’s lips, lingering for longer than either of them expected. 

While they knew the end could come in the dead of night, they were sure that they were safe within the other’s embrace, and that night the only presence of a nightmare was the one roaring outside Greyskull Keep’s walls.

TAG NINE PEOPLE YOU’D LIKE TO KNOW BETTER !

1. favorite colors: I don't really have a favourite colour? Like, yeah, I lean towards purples, blues and greens, but clothing wise, I end up living in monochromes. Makes my life easier.

2. favorite flavors: I love salty foods (except liquorice, ew), sweet with a sour tang, and I'm starting to appreciate spicy food again. I went off it for a while, which is weird.

3. favorite genres: Mostly fantasy, with a little bit of sci-fi and the faintest tinge of horror? I'm not great with it, I still get nightmares 😅 I'll also indulge in a bit of slice of life every now and then.

4. favorite music: Spotify describes my main playlist as angry, various kinds of rock, metal and instrumentals 😂 I mean, it's not wrong, but does it have to call me out like that?

5. favorite movies: Recently, it's been the John Wick movies, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (it was funny), Venom, Men In Black (it was a childhood favourite), Bo Burnham's Inside (couldn't stop laughing!), and probably a lot more, but it's late and I'm blanking.

6. favorite series: At the moment, it's The Legend of Vox Machina. I'm not really binging anything else.

7. last song: Waste My Time - Scandroid

8. last series: See above, I've been wasting my own time with Stardew Valley.

9. last movie: In theaters, it was The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I totally forgot about that!

10. currently reading: Vox Machina Origins: Volume 1 and Noragami volume 26. Eagerly awaiting 27!

11. currently watching: Nothing right now, I'm winding down for the night.

12. currently working on: This meme? Nah, I'm reviewing notes from Saturday's D&D session, fixing spelling errors and such. I'm also somewhat planning out RP stuff, and I have some rewrites to do when I can snag some time to myself, yeesh.

april reading wrap-up ✨

this month i took part in a readathon so i read a lot more than i normally would! i counted some of these books for my participation in the studyblr w/ knives 2022 genre bingo, but i'm gonna post about that separately, since i have to include some books from march as well!

• a collection of icelandic fairytales — i bought this book several years ago and now i've finally read it! it was really fun to dabble in a folklore i don't know much about and find both familiar themes and new ones, plus some stories were kinda hilarious ngl. 4/5

• a collection of poems by hermann hesse — i really enjoyed the little bit of hesse's poetry that i read last year, so i bought more! i'm not an expert in poetry by any means, but i found this little collection really lovely. 4/5

• we should all be feminists by chimamanda ngozi adichie — i don't really know what to say about this. go read it, it's really short but it really hits the nail on the head without convoluted conceptualisms. 4/5

• the last wish by andrzej sapkowski — i read most of the collection already about a year ago but i got stuck right before the last story (the last wish). it bothered me to leave it unfinished, so i finally got to it. i'll admit, it didn't do much for me, definitely my least favourite in the collection. 2/5

• dubliners by james joyce — another one that had sat on my shelf quite a long time. it was nice reading it after having lived in dublin for some months, being familiar with some of the places mentioned. naturally i enjoyed some stories less than others, but overall it was a good read. 3/5

• smashed by junji ito — after reading my first junji ito collection last month i went for another one! like the previous one, i really enjoyed this one. 4/5

• a natural history of dragons by marie brennan — oh my heart, what do i say about this book. it's brilliant, i loved it so much, and i will definitely go on reading the rest of the series! 5/5

• the old man and the sea by ernest hemingway — so good. of course it made me sad, but i loved it. 5/5

• breakfast at tiffany's by truman capote — uhm i don't know if anyone is going to agree with me on this, but i didn't like this one. i'm sorry. 1/5

• 84, charing cross road by helene hanff — this was great. books, correspondence, human connection - it made me laugh, it made me sad, it warmed my heart. 5/5

• volumes 1&2 of critical role's vox machina origins comics — i fell in love with critical role and vox machina thanks to the animated series this february; it was so lovely to get more of the characters, especially in prequel form. 5/5

• this is how you lose the time war by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone — it took me a while at the start to get into the flow of the book, but then oh man. the concept is so good, and the prose is absolutely gorgeous. 5/5

• a midsummer night's dream by shakespeare — this was so much fun! maybe i should read more comedies lol. 4/5

Reading this week (final week of 2022!)

holiday week with Plenty of travel and variable reading habits. it pleases me a lot that the new year starts on a sunday just so like, the weeks will be all night like that when doing weekly recaps like this. i'm a few hours out from midnight where i'm writing this right now, but a happy new years to my friends and mutuals in earlier timezones who have already made it to 2023. here's hoping its a good one and i read many amazing things in the new year

Ruin of a Rake: A Cure by Cat Sebastian

in this year's collection of Holiday Epilogues from the author! Sebastian (re)releases a collection of epilogues/vignettes for her various books every year around this time, most of them previously published but still fun to read. out of the collection this was the one i felt interested the most in reading bc of it's cool premise: its not actually an epilogue, but instead a short story "written by" one of the heros of her romances, where he inserts himself and hs boyfriend as the main couple of a vampire story. WHAT a premise, and it was good. (also, i imagine its kinda mortifying for Courtenay to read that his Julian wrote his [Courtney's] pov for this)

believe the hype about this book and go read it. it's fantastic. i could gush about it forever. the GENDER DYNAMICS AT PLAY in this book. wow it feels so well thought out, and also Zhu is such a clever protagonist. at several points i started like... grinning in distress? like as "WOW that is such a clever plan from Zhu and also. horrific. what a move"

Gill-Peterson seems like a great source for me looking into trans history research, and I loved her insight in this as something that she's beginning to look into for conenctions and history
