On the morning of March 1st we asked a question:

As we noted in our post, the ITIC recently published a report showing that over 50% of the journalists that the Hamas media office says were killed in the Gaza Strip between October 7th 2023 and February 18th 2024 were affiliated with terrorist organisations, including 44 from Hamas and 19 from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

THE BBC, JOURNALISM AND TERRORISM

“As we have previously observed in relation to BBC coverage of the topic, the safety of journalists while doing their job is of course an important issue. So too is the abuse of journalism and journalists by terrorist organisations and repressive regimes.

The blurred lines between journalism and terrorism in the Gaza Strip have long been on record but the BBC nevertheless has to date shown no interest in denouncing the exploitation of journalism by cynical terrorist organisations or in drawing a line between legitimate media organisations and those promoting the interests of terrorist organisations or terror funding regimes.”

Little did we know that the answer to our question had already been provided.

The CPJ’s “open letter” reads as follows:

“We, the undersigned, stand united with Palestinian journalists in their call for safety, protection, and the freedom to report. For nearly five months, journalists and media workers in Gaza – overwhelmingly, the sole source of on-the-ground reporting from within the Palestinian territory – have been working in unprecedented conditions: at least 89 have been killed in the war, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, more journalists than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire year. These journalists – on whom the international news media and the international community rely for information about the situation inside Gaza – continue to report despite grave personal risk. They continue despite the loss of family, friends, and colleagues, the destruction of homes and offices, constant displacement, communications blackouts, and shortages of food and fuel. Journalists are civilians and Israeli authorities must protect journalists as noncombatants according to international law. Those responsible for any violations of that longstanding protection should be held accountable. Attacks on journalists are also attacks on truth. We commit to championing the safety of journalists in Gaza, which is fundamental for the protection of press freedom everywhere.”

In the Gaza Strip, however, not all “journalists are civilians”. Some – like the two whose terror links the BBC tried to downplay in January – are active members of terrorist organisations. Others are employees of the media arms of terrorist organisations. Obfuscating that fact clearly does nothing “for the protection of press freedom”.

Nevertheless, one of the people who chose to sign the CPJ’s “open letter” is Deborah Turness, the CEO of BBC News. Readers may recall that in October of last year, Turness attempted to do damage control following criticism of BBC coverage of the war initiated by Hamas on October 7th.

However, as we see, Turness’ commitment to providing BBC audiences with “trusted journalism” does not include recognition of the fact that her profession is being abused by people who function both as journalists and terror operatives.

The BBC’s participation in this CPJ campaign, which whitewashes the issue of the terror affiliations of some journalists in the Gaza Strip, is particularly relevant given that – as noted by Jeremy Bowen in a recent Radio 4 item – the corporation is currently using local freelancers to produce content.

Bowen: “The only journalists in Gaza at the moment are Palestinians who were there on the 7th of October and haven’t left. Many Palestinian journalists have been killed. Many others, including my colleagues from our BBC office in Gaza, have got out with their families. The ones left behind, whether by choice or because they haven’t had permission to cross into Egypt, are extremely courageous. We work with freelancers inside Gaza who liaise with a talented young Palestinian producer in our office in Jerusalem. […] We would be precisely nowhere without them.”

Indeed, BBC audiences have seen reports from the Gaza Strip that are credited to journalists who are not present on the ground but fail to clarify who actually did the filming and interviewing.

With the BBC now having made it clear by means of Turness’ endorsement of this CPJ letter that the issue of journalists engaging in terrorism is not one of its concerns, some difficult questions obviously arise regarding Turness’ claim to provide “trusted journalism” to the corporation’s funding public.

Hector was born in the working class, to parents who had fled Fidel Castro's regime and made ends meet while they raised him far away from home. Every day, after school, he would do his homework at his mother's desk, who worked as a receptionist in a paper company. His father was a florist working on farmer's markets. They were hard workers, who had big plans for their only son and they saved every month to put him in a proper school. While attending high school, Hector came in second in a competition organized by the British Academy for Science, for his research project on reducing water usage in agriculture, he participated to debate competitions and though he was happy to make his club's victory a collective effort, his extensive knowledge of social, political, economical issues was key into getting 1st place, and it was no surprise that he ended up president of this club as well as 3 others.

He joined college and at the same time officially signed up with the Labour Party as a full member and activist. His parents were involved in politics themselves, and from the moment he was old enough to hold flags at rallies and demonstrations, his father would hoist him up on his shoulders. They both took part in a worker's union, though his mother was the one most devoted to helping both workers and those most vulnerable.

He first did a double licence in sociology and political sciences at LSE, studied in Barcelona for a year with the Erasmus program, and got involved in activism there too. Followed two more years during which he worked on his thesis. He focused on the positive impact immigration had on the country, and while his work was applauded by his peers, he reaped a lot of bile and hatred from the opposition. The dichotomous controversial work ended up in the media. While progressive ones applauded his fresh stance on the question and commented on the depth of his analysis. Qualitative research combined with grounded theory made a solid ground to build his political program on. It didn't matter if some called him a ludicrous dreamer or a clown. Ad hominem attacks only confirmed what he already knew: he needed to take things further, he needed to become a candidate to local elected office.

He ran for council in his borough, Barking and Dagenham, in north eastern London. He fought against gentrification in the area, which would be made all the more painful with the 2012 Olympic Games and the quick evolution of the city in the years that preceded the event. Hector spent most of his free time listening to people who dedicated a lot of their energy, time, or even money for the local community. Eventually, when the time came for him to campaign again, this time for MP, he chose to rely only on their donations, refusing any money that came from corporations and lobbies. The people would be who he represented, not the interest of private companies. It was unconventional. It was risky. He might even lost the election because he fought against Goliaths. Fundraising and media relations was usually handled by professionals who saw the world through a lens filled with statistics and polls.

He shouldn't have won those elections, he supposed. When he won, upspent with a margin of 15 to 1 by his opponents, Hector couldn't believe how much support he had managed to gather through his years as a devoted borough councilman.

Hector, who was now a MP for a little over 10 years, was feeling tight in his shoes, and with the help of his husband, threatened his old LSE pal, none other than the Prime Minister, to reveal the contents of the treaty to the public. He knew the time was right for him. He was quite popular among the party, and his husband's ties with the conservatives made him much easier to accept for the Tories.

His party did get this much right: he represented a breath of fresh air, and those always got people talking. What they didn't get right, however, was this idea that Hector was so much better than your typical politician. Not one bit. He wasn't above shoving people under the bus, or using god awful tactics to get ahead of others. He might have been a likeable personality, with the kind of voice that you could have listened to even if it read the phone book, he also knew when crossing the line was necessary. After all, in a city like London, you couldn't possibly hope to survive being a good guy.

For teachers/school staff:

NEU members, for chrissake don’t break the strike. On here, I’m not going to mince words- don’t be a scab, just fucking don’t, yeah. (If you are genuinely concerned about pay, not just using that as an excuse, please hit me up for advice). (Yeah, we are judging you and next time you ask me for a favour I will say no, and I bloody hope you don’t go to your rep about anything in the next 6 months or so).

Un-unionised teachers- you can legally join the strike, and please do. You should join a union, of course, but strike anyway!

NASUWT members- if your head knows for sure you’re not an NEU member (how?) I accept you can’t risk striking, but don’t cover, don’t do anything additional, don’t help your head keep the school open in any way. Ideally, phone in sick.

Supply teachers- I am begging you, don’t work on a strike day. Even if you are not covering a striking worker, you are helping open the school, so just don’t do it.

Support staff- If your school is picketed, regardless of union affiliation, you can refuse to cross the picket line. I know this sounds really scary, but please message me if you’re unsure about it, and I’ll go through the legal side of this with you. Alternatively, consider phoning in sick. If you feel you must go to work, then DO NOT cover for striking staff- just refuse. What are they actually going to do?

The Tories want to destroy education in the UK, it really is that simple, and if you do anything to help keep a school open on a strike day, YOU are helping them, and that really is low. Don’t you dare say you care about the kids you teach, unless you really think a rotating cast of supply teachers and no TAs in a class of 34 is good enough for them.

At this point I'm waiting for the absolute actual ending to this workers and 1st affiliate arc cuz my guess is that after being so serious for this long, a switch will turn off inside them and practically leave them remembering that they're teenagers with school lol.

Seriously I'm so desperate for the high school arc again I miss watching them being their goofy ass selves.

notice the usage of gray monochrome in all four panels? in both comics, at the particular panels being referred, the character is in a suspended reality that is not a part of the current timeline of events they are involved in. it is a dream-like state/trance where they are having a conversation which is detrimental in terms of the foreseeable future, and revolve around circumventing a bad outcome in said future.

ancheol is in a different timeline from his original one, i.e., he returns to the past to change the future. the man daniel (original body) is talking to resembles his perfect body in terms of both looks and build.

ptj likes to play around with the concepts of time and space as seen in both My Life as a Loser and Ulzzang Generation. so my theory is maybe the other person sharing the gray space with daniel is the "him" from another timeline or the future with a "bad ending", appearing in his conscience after his failure to prevent the disastrous future.

this can be supported by the hairstyle resemblance to self-hatred!daniel who appears during the ansan/james lee arc :

also is intriguing the fact that the man in the grey space seems to know about charles choi being the true enemy, even more dangerous than the workers. he also warns daniel about the basement hulk/1st affiliate's no.1 and urges daniel to unite with the rest of the second generation present in the first affiliate against that "threat" :

note : - the threat in question may also refer to jake's older half-brother, the former king of seoul who is currently returning from mexico, and is an accomplice along with james lee/dg and charles choi to his father, gapryong kim's , murder.
