The photographer Paolo Di Paolo, who has died aged 98, documented the renaissance of Italy following the dark days of the second world war, capturing that country’s 1950s and 60s glamour. His star shone brightly for 15 years before he turned his back on photography, but in that time he recorded the luminosity of cultural figures such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Gina Lollobrigida and Tennessee Williams, as well as the optimism and dignity of ordinary people.
His pictures captured the shift from a more innocent, rural life, in a style that mirrored the neorealism movement in Italian film, as embodied in the shot of three boys on a bucolic hill looking towards the sprawl of Rome. His keen eye recorded the societal tension between the haves and have-nots, but his humanist approach highlighted the elegance of every person, regardless of circumstance. He said: “You might not know the subject but you understand the situation. In every image there is a story to tell … that is my law.”
Di Paolo started out as a self-taught amateur, taking photographs for pleasure with a considered approach. “Each shot had to be a good one. If the situation was not as I had in my mind, I wouldn’t take the picture.”
In 1954, he took his photos to Mario Pannunzio, the editor of the influential weekly current affairs magazine Il Mondo. Pannunzio recognised Di Paolo’s talent, and the photographer found his spiritual home.
He earned money working for other publications, notably Tempo, who sent him on assignment abroad. However, it was on home soil, on the self-titled 1959 assignment for Successo magazine, The Long Road of Sand, that Di Paolo produced some of his finest reportage. He embarked on a road trip along the coast in his Arnolt MG, with the author and poet Pasolini in the passenger seat, documenting Italians on vacation at the dawn of a new era. Di Paolo said: “I was looking for an Italy that looked to the future.”
His intelligence, empathy and discretion garnered trust and allowed him to take many candid portraits of major cultural figures including Sophia Loren applying makeup, Marcello Mastroianni sipping coffee and Kim Novak ironing. He formed a strong bond with the enigmatic actor Anna Magnani and his portraits of her with her son capture, and are captured by, intimacy.
Paolo was born into a poor family in the village of Larino, in Molise. His father, Michele Di Paolo, ran a small shop that sold tobacco and salt and his mother, Michelina (nee Lallo), was a smallholder and a skilled painter and embroiderer. He had five step-siblings from his father’s two previous marriages.
He attended the village school then moved to Rome to complete the final year of his studies at Liceo Classico Augusto, before returning to Larino. During the war he served in the Granatieri (Grenadiers) near his home, but did not see action. Afterwards he began writing for local newspapers, but he wanted more from life.
In 1949, at the age of 24, he left home to study history and philosophy at La Sapienza University of Rome. He intended to return to Larino to become a teacher there, but fell in with a group of young artists that was a hotbed of ideas and creativity, and realised he needed to explore a different path.
He had been making ends meet working at a tourism magazine, and was on his way to their offices in 1953 when he saw and fell in love with a Leica IIIc camera in the window of a nearby opticians. He had found the means with which to express himself.
He resigned from his job and used his severance money to buy the camera. Abandoning his studies shortly before graduation, he threw himself into the new humanist movement in photography. “The strength and enthusiasm that motivated us young people was overwhelming: our happiness was intoxicating.”
However in 1966, with the rise of television and the dawn of salacious celebrity culture, Il Mondo closed. Di Paolo was devastated. He wrote a telegram to Pannunzio: “ Today … the ambition to be a photographer has died.”
The following year Di Paolo photographed the Valentino haute couture show, but he was becoming increasingly disillusioned. In 1968 he went to see a photo editor who wanted him to exploit his society contacts, to get “some spice”.
Di Paolo’s strong ethical sense clashed with this new aggressive style and he refused to be associated with the paparazzi. At the peak of his powers, he hung up his camera and shut away his 250,000 negatives, prints and slides.
He moved to the countryside outside Rome, taking a job as an art director for the carabinieri (Italy’s regional police). Over the next 40 years he produced books, which included his photos of the cadets’ lives, and calendars, for the force. In 1973, he married Elena Marcelli, his former assistant, and they had two children, Michele and Silvia. He lived a quiet life and indulged his passions for winemaking, dogs and vintage cars.
In 1997, Silvia was hunting for a pair of skis in the cellar of her parents’ home when she was shocked to discover his photographic archive. She had no idea her father had been a photographer. She asked him about his work but he was reluctant to speak about it. It would take years of cajoling before he allowed Silvia to bring his work back to life.
Finally, recognition flowed. His first exhibition, Il Mio Mondo, was held at the gallery il museo del louvre in Rome, in 2016. Three years later, the MAXXI museum in the city staged a major retrospective, Mondo Perduto, with an accompanying monograph that is the only collection of his work to date.
Pierpaolo Piccioli, the creative director of Valentino, saw the MAXXI exhibition and, inspired by Di Paolo’s 1967 Valentino pictures, invited the then 94-year-old to photograph behind the scenes at the fashion house’s 2020 spring/summer couture show in Paris.
A documentary about Di Paolo’s life and work, The Treasure of His Youth, by the fashion photographer Bruce Weber, premiered at the Rome film festival in 2021 and is due for release in the UK next year. In May, to coincide with his 98th birthday, Di Paolo was awarded an honorary degree from La Sapienza.
He is survived by Elena, his children and two grandchildren, Matilde and Leonardo.

When was the last time you fell?: Couple of weeks ago when I slipped in the bathroom and damn near knocked my head straight to the ground. Literal millimeters away from a bad concussion; and it would’ve left me shaken up for the rest of the morning and given me an existential crisis if I didn’t just have to immediately get back to work lol.
What’s the last flavor of ice cream you had?: I had the cookies and cream variant of the Magnum ice cream.
Do you know a Stephen?: Nope, nobody comes to mind.
Green or Purple?: Purple.
Are you currently mad at anyone?: I’m feeling a bit resentful towards a certain person, but not mad.
Do you own any sundresses?: Yeah, I have a lot of them because I used to have a sundress phase back in high school and college. I’ve mostly grown out of it now, but I still keep the dresses around if in case I need to wear something lightweight and comfy.
Have you done any deep cleaning recently?: No.
Have you ever cooked a meal for a large group of people? I was about to say no until I remembered that one of our major projects in home economics when I was in high school was to come up with a food business and serve the entire high school body for a day. Thinking about it now, it’s an insane assignment that should technically be illegal lol – but in any case, we had to do that and I remember our group coming up with a burger business. We had something else too...chicken tenders I think it was? We had to make hundreds of each dish and overall it went well, but again thinking about it now I’m just glad we never heard of any health issues from the students who bought from us.
Do you like reading peoples survey answers?: Sure!
Do you check your email daily?: My work email I obviously check every weekday since that’s part of my routine – but I keep it off-limits on weekends because boundaries; as for my personal email, I check it probably once a week.
Have you ever used a whole tube of chapstick or do you usually lose it before doing so?: I don’t use lip balm.
When did you last wash your hands?: Around an hour ago after using the washroom.
Do you enjoy being outside in the rain?: I love the rain, but I don’t like being stuck in it – like I hate having to drive while it’s pouring hard. It’s only calming to me when I happen to be safe indoors.
What are some lyrics to the last song you listened to?: "On a day you hate being yourself, on a day you want to disappear forever, let’s build a door in your mind. Once you open the door and enter, this place will wait for you, it’s okay to believe the magic shop that will comfort you.”
Do you ever read the newspaper or get all your news online or television? Online. It was never a habit of mine to read the newspaper.
Have you ever watched a meteor shower?: No, they are never visible here.
Does the number 8 have any significance to you? No, it doesn’t.
Who has the best hair that you know?: A person I work with has naturally curvy hair that I find really pretty.
Have you ever been to an aquarium?: Yeah, I’ve been to the one in Manila. I'm 100% sure I’ve also gone to an aquarium abroad, but I can’t remember which country it was.
Are you currently happy?: Yeah, I’m generally a happy person as long as you take out the work aspect of my life. I can’t wait to get that shit all sorted out, lmao.
What’s a reason for your happiness?: Self-love and contentment is a big part of it.
Is there a light on in the room you’re in?: Yes.
Do you know anyone that has a birthday today?: Yeah, it’s Kaye’s birthday today! She was supposed to host a birthday dinner this weekend and invited me to it, but last Thursday she told me she was going to hold it off for now since med school got a bit too hectic. Anyway, I’m just waiting for the rescheduled date but I’m definitely going to be there; I’ve really appreciated how she’s seemingly come out of nowhere to be closer with me the past few months and I’d love to be able to celebrate her day with her.
Have you ever been to a car show? I don’t think so. I’m trying to remember if my dad has brought me to one in the past, but my memory is coming up blank so it’s most likely a no. Do you like grocery shopping?: Sure. It can be tempting to put a bunch of snacks in the cart though haha but otherwise I find the experience pretty calming.
Have you ever been in a play?: We held school productions every year and participating in them was mandatory, so yup. I’ve never been in a play voluntarily though – I’m not a theatre person.
Can you see a mirror from where you’re at?: Nopes.
Do you have a large or small backyard?: I’d say it’s somewhere in the middle. It doesn’t like, lead to a forest or anything like that lmao but it’s also definitely not cramped. We’ve hosted parties there a few times that comfortably fit a good number of people.
Do you like blueberries? I like some blueberry-flavored things, but not the fruit.
What’s your favorite flavored water?: I don’t like flavored water.
If given opportunity, would you go to outer space?: Continued from last Sunday. Yes, I would. I don’t think the astronaut in me ever died out.
Do you own a record player?: Nah. It’s been part of my wishlist forever, but I just never get around to getting one. I have nowhere to place it in my room anyway so I’m not too bothered.
Has religion ever come between you and somebody?: Yeah. I remember when my ex had some sort of epiphany about religion and suddenly gave God a chance, and that definitely led to a bit of a fallout between us. If I remember correctly it got resolved when we agreed to just never raise the topic of religion and to let each other discover and explore our spirituality on our own – which honestly should’ve already been a blaring red flag.
When did you last have an important conversation with someone?: A few nights ago.
Does caffeine cause you to get shaky? When I’ve had one too many cups. I’m used to drinking 2 full cups at most, and last Sunday when I had 3 it already made my body start freaking out lol. Head was ringing, stomach kept doing somersaults, I took too many trips to the toilet, the whole shebang. Not pleasant at all.
Is there a scar on your body that you can’t explain? No. I know where each of them came from.
Have you ever accidentally shut your finger up in a door?: Fortunately, no.
What would you say that most people know you for?: Never shutting up about BTS.
What’s your favorite kind of juice?: Idk, let’s just go with orange since I’m most likely to take a sip of that.
Do you have any stuffed animals?: Does Tata count as a stuffed animal? Hahaha I have two. What are you up to today?: I mean it’s 11:43 PM, so all there is left for me to do really is to wrap this survey up and start preparing to turn in.
Do you wear hats often?: Yeah, I wear bucket hats like 8 out of 10 times I’m outdoors.
Do you have any nieces or nephews? Not yet. Waiting for my friends and cousins to give me ‘em ;) Hahaha.
Do you own a religious book?: No.
Have you ever owned a wreck it journal?: Nah. As a teen, unsurprisingly, I really wanted to collect them – but I think even younger me subconsciously knew that I had no creativity to show for those journals, so I never actually ended up buying any versions of it.
What did you last purchase?: A bunch of party stuff for the BTS Busan concert this Saturday. Y’ALL I got a bunch of purple balloons, a purple set and a rainbow set of streamers, and this giant-ass gold ‘7′ balloon lol it’s crazy. I’m ready for this week to end because the first thing I’ll most definitely be doing is to dress the living room up.
What was a celebrity you liked as a kid?: Beyoncé. Still do.
What did you last eat that was spicy?: Ramyeon.
Have you ever had tofu?: Yes, love tofu.
Would you or have you ever held a snake?: I wouldn’t own one as a pet, but I have held snakes before.
Do you peel your apples before eating them?: I just don’t eat apples, period.
Do you season your food a lot?: I don’t cook, but I mean yeah I definitely prefer my food with lots of seasoning because that’s what helps food be more delicious. If I find something a bit bland, Knorr seasoning always helps.
Do you ever light incense? No. I never encounter incense anywhere unless I’m at church and they bring out that contraption thingy that releases the incense smoke.
Is there anything you’d like to say to someone?: Sorry I’ve been a shitty replier, I haven’t been up to talking the past few days but I’ll get back to you soon.
What are you currently wearing?: A white t-shirt with the print of a past viral tweet, and a pair of shorts.
Have you ever gotten up in the middle of the night just to talk to someone?: Grossly enough, yup.
What was the last social event you went to?: A PR event for one of the brands I handle.
Do you use the word “like” excessively? When spoken, yeah pretty often.
What are your thoughts on horse races? I don’t see the appeal.
Do you watch The Simpsons or any other cartoons?: Nope, not really big on cartoon series.
Do you find tattoos attractive?: Not as much as when I was younger.
If you have a car, does it have a name? My parents have given it a name but I never use it haha. I just refer to it by its model name - Mirage.
Why did you last see a doctor?: Haven’t been to the doctor since my UTI diagnosis two years ago. I did go to the dentist a couple of months ago to get a wisdom tooth extracted.
Do you get light headed after getting blood drawn?: I’ve never gotten my blood drawn and don’t think I will ever be up for it, lol.
What did you first think of this morning?: I thought of how loud Cooper was barking, then immediately fell back asleep.
When did you last cry?: LOL earlier watching this emotional video that one of my accounts will be releasing this weekend on their social media.
What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen today?: Run BTS flying yoga episode hahahahaha
Have you ever been snorkeling? Sure!
Are you clumsy? Continued ages later; holy shit is this survey long lol. Yeah. I’m not as clumsy as I used to be, but I will sometimes still knock cups of water over, trip over air, lose my balance, accidentally slam doors, etc.
Do you prefer satin, cotton, or flannel sheets?: Cotton.
What’s your favorite kind of jam/jelly?: Guava, since that’s the one I’m most familiar with. I’m generally not a fan of jam.
What’s on your bedside table currently?: I have my lamp, earphones, company ID, a couple of ballpens, and ointment.
What’s the best compliment you’ve received recently?: Angela was telling me how this new top I bought suits me really well.
What’s some things you always make sure to pack before going on a trip?: My phone and laptop (and their chargers) and underwear are pretty much my only must-haves. Everything else, I wouldn’t be too bothered if I realize I’ve forgotten to bring them with me.
What’s one of your strengths?: Looking after people.
Have you ever spent more than $100 on a pair of shoes?: Yup.
Would you say you’re an impulsive person? A lot less than I used to be, but yeah I still have my tendencies sometimes.
What have you last been diagnosed with?: UTI, but this was forever ago.
What’s something that makes you quirky?: Idk, maybe some of my habits when it comes to food. Admittedly I’m pickier than I think I am, like the way I absolutely have to peel the skin off fried chicken so I can save it for last, or the way I have a particular ‘trail’ I follow when eating a burger haha.
What types of cheese do you consume the most?: I’d say mozzarella.
Do you purchase extended warranties on your electronics? No.
What was the last restaurant you ate at? I don’t remember the name of the place but it was this wings place in BGC right after we had a pitch. It was the only spot that didn’t have a waiting list and we needed to have lunch immediately so we could go back to work, so we ended up there. It was good! I had this unique dish of theirs that was basically a love child of boneless chicken and pizza lol.
What was the last sweet beverage you had?: Caramel macchiato, last night.
Do you believe in psychic ability? I do not.
Have you ever won any carnival games before?: Not that I can recall.
What was the last fun thing you did?: Watching the BTS Busan concert! Yesterday was PERFECT. I had my place completely dressed up with a ridiculous amount of balloons, and I had these cute and colorful streamers on the walls too and even a giant purple ‘7’ balloon. Six friends came over and it was basically a screaming and singing fest for the whole 1.5 hour show, and it was just so so so so so SO much fun; I was so giddy the entire time and still am haha.
Do you wear glasses?: I do.
What song did you last have on repeat?: Run BTS.
When did you last have pizza delivered?: Yesterday;  it was one of the things I had delivered for our watch party.
What do you normally pay for your hair cuts?: Trims are usually just P100 where I live.
What’s your favorite decoration in your place of residence?: The coffee table we have in the living room - because my late grandpa made it.
How many computers/laptops are in the building you’re in?: Three.
Have you ever been to a rodeo?: Nope.
What frosting goes best on cake?: Chocolate or cream cheese.
How long does it take you to get ready? 15-30 minutes, depending on how indecisive I am on my outfit for the day.
Do you do some form of exercise daily?: No.
Have you ever won a big prize for something?: I’ve won the bigger prizes in a couple of raffles.
Do you think it’s true that good things come to those who wait?: Yeah, but I am also in the belief that you have to actively work hard for those good things to actually be closer to you.
Do you show your feelings?: Sometimes, but I feel like I am more reserved these days. I only show my frustrations and whatnot to people I’m really close to and comfortable with.
Have you ever held a chicken?: I don’t think I have.
Would you rather feel too much or nothing at all?: Too much.
Are you hard to please?: Nopes.
What is today’s date?: October 16.

I got bored inspired today and decided to wite the Wackynette Story of “HawkMoth is” where Marinette does a presentation about why and how Lila is secretly Hawk Moth (Her assignment was to do tabloid news)
Also got inspired by @Rarity36 comic about the same thing, thank you!
semi salt, but not really.
-
Hawk Moth Is…
Or the Dangers of Assigning a Tabloid Report to Very Smart Students
The day started ordinary for the Class of Miss Bustier. Today lesson was on News and how they can be shared. To make the lesson a bit more fun, after they had covered all of them, the teacher had decided to assign each pair of student to investigate a current event and make a presentation in the style of said event. Lila immediately asked Alya to be her partner.
“Oh, we can dress up as journalists and make our presentation as something worth of a Newspaper!”
“But Miss Bustier” asked Marinette spoke up. “There are 15 of us, and the assignment is on pairs… one of us will be left on its own”
“Oh, don’t worry Marinette, I’m sure whoever that is can make a wonderful job on their own!” replied Lila with fake sweetness. Of course that with her claiming Alya, it was highly likely that Marinette would be left on her own. Marinette just glared at her. “Don’t get mad at me, I’m only joking!” Lila added with more fake sweetness. Alya giggled.
“I’ll be sure to make things fair. For starters, I’m making the pairs” she looked around the class, who groaned. “And I’m also assigning what kind of media will each do”
Miss Bustier took a small glass bowl from under her desk, along with a hat; both seemed to be filled with papers.
“Now, I’m going to take out your names from this bowl to make the pairs so everything is fair. No changes or substitutions are allowed, all pairs are final” she grabbed the hat. “And this hat has all the different media we saw, to make everything fair, it will be also random”
Marinette was one of the last chosen, and she was paired with Juleka, to work on a tabloid. Lila snickered, and Alya gave Marinette her condolences for having to work on “fake news”
At the end, only Adrien, Lila and Chloe were unpaired. Marinette felt a bit bad for hoping that Adrien would be on his own, but then a Christmas Miracle happened…
“Only three people…” Miss Bustier took one of the papers left “Adrien with” Marinette held her breath, as did the other two girls. “Huh… Markov? I don’t remember putting his name here…”
“No charges or substitutions allowed, all pairs are final” Markov played a recording of Miss Bustier. She just shrugged.
“Well, I did say that. Adrien, you’re with Markov. Lila and Chloe, you’re the last pair”
The two girls looked at each other, mouths agape. Even with Markov lacking a face, they could swear he was grinning at them.
“Good luck on your presentation” called Marinette to Lila and Chloe after the day was over.
Working with Juleka was a blast, even without taking in account that they also worked on her room, which meant Luka was present sometimes. They actually came to the realization that working on a tabloid would be easier than what their classmates had gotten, as it meant that they would only need to think on something current, and then lie their asses off in a sensationalistic way.
So of course they choose the most unbelievable thing they could, and went from there.
-
The day of the presentation came, with Chloe and Lila presenting something worth of a news show, and that was obviously made by professionals that Chloe’s dad paid. However, they forgot to cite their sources, so Miss Bustier had to take off some points of their grade.
“Marinette and Juleka are next, their theme is a tabloid”
The two girls stood up from their respective seats. Like Chloe and Lila before them, they were dressed in pantsuits that no doubt Marinette had designed, Juleka with her a dark purple that almost seemed black, with a textured fabric that looked like giant feathers, Marinette with a soft pink one that it took the others a double take to realize the blazer was simulating a skirt. Even Chloe seemed impressed.
“Yes, yes. Hello everyone, as you know, the Tabloid is a type of newspaper that is smaller, and covers more sensationalistic stories, celebrity gossip and such, most of their stories are dubious or outright fake.”
“They are famous in the states for reporting Bigfoot and UFOS, for example”
“So today, our news is the most unbelievable thing we could think of!”
Marinette pressed a button on her tablet, and the screen behind them appeared, it looked like the cover of a tabloid, with sensationalistic views talking about monster sightings, Andre the Ice cream man being secretly a spy, Luka being a vampire and other nonsense the girls could think of. The biggest font and the main news red “We discovered the identity of Hawk Moth!!!!”
“First of all, we want to thank Nathaniel for taking time of his own project to help us with the illustrations for ours”
“You’re welcome!” said the boy, who was also wearing a dark red suit, also designed by Marinette. Kim, his partner, was equally dressed, with his vest and pants being a weird shade of brown.
“Without further ado…”
“EXTRA, EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!” yelled both girl at the same time. Marinette pressed the tablet again, and the screen changed.
“Exclusive news, ladies and gentlemen! We have discovered the identity of Paris Number One Criminal! The one and only Hawk Moth!” Juleka said quickly in an excitable voice that everyone found uncharacteristically of her. Miss Bustier smiled, knowing that Marinette was being a good example for her.  Everyone gasped, forgetting it was tabloid news.
The next screen had a very cool illustration of someone transforming into Hawk Moth. Everyone immediately knew who it was meant to be.
“WHAT? Marinette!” Alya protested, surprising no one. Except maybe Lila. “That is slander! There is no way Lila is Hawk Moth!” she turned to their teacher. “Miss Bustier, you can’t possibly allow Marinette to continue!”
“Actually, it was my idea” said Juleka, much more meekly than before. Miss Bustier frowned and looked sternly at Alya.
“We are supposed to do a tabloid, so of course we are doing something bogus and ridiculous. Besides, Lila knows we are only joking” Marinette winked at the rest of the class, who all laughed making Lila furious
“They are right. Statistically speaking, tabloid news are very likely to be fake news, or greatly exaggerated ones.”
“Thank you Max” said Miss Bustier. “Girls, you may continue with your presentation”
“Thanks!” Marinette pressed another button, and it was Lila as Volpina. “As we all know, Lila was akumatized the first day she started class with us, and…”
“That proves she’s not Hawk Moth! She can’t be akumatized and be hawk moth at the same time!” Alya practically jumped out of her seat. Miss Bustier looked at her disappointed. Marinette looked at her, but ignored her comment.
“As we all know, the power of Volpina dealt with Illusions, and one of her illusions was, precisely, that of Hawk Moth appearing in plain sight”
“Now, you are wondering, why is that important?” several classmates nodded. “Because up to that point, we had only seen Hawk Moth’s head made of butterflies back on the Stone Heart incident, and we didn’t see the actual Hawk Moth until much later, on Heroes day” Marinette pressed a button, and an image of the head of Hawk Moth made of butterflies appeared, along with a blurry picture of hawk moth the day of Volpina, and another higher quality picture of Heroes Day, everything with their respective credits.
“So, I ask, how did Lila, AKA Volpina know how Hawk Moth looked, when no one else did?”
The class breaks in whispers. They seem to forget again that it is supposed to be fake news.
“But Hawk Moth is a guy! An adult man!”
“All the better to cover herself by pretending her alter ego to be of other gender and age. Something she can do as Volpina”
“And speaking of Volpina… do you know where she took that name from?” Most of the class shook their head. “Well, interesting fact! Adrien Abigail Agreste…”
“Please don’t use my middle name”
“Duly noted. Adrien Agreste brought a book from home the same day that Lila appeared…”
“Oh, and what did that book contained?”
“Excellent question Juleka! The book contained information on the Miraculous and their past holders, and it was actually the property of Adrien’s father, Mister Gabriel Abigail Agreste”
Adrien just head desked.
“And Lila grabbed the book for inspection. Adrien almost caught her, so she just threw the book on the thrash”
“That makes no sense, how would I know what it contained? Heck, how do you know?” Alya did notice that Lila had not denied that she had taken the book.
“My house is in front of the park. I saw you guys and thought I would approach and say hi.”
“Didn’t you say you were eavesdropping?”
“They were talking when I approached them, so technically, yeah.”
“Wait… you recovered the book from the thrash? You were the one to return it to my father?”
Marinette blushed a deep shade.
“What? You mean that part is real? Dupain-Cheng is the reason you returned to school?”
“Well, I’m not saying Lila did took my father’s book, but it disappeared after she showed interest in it”
“I can’t believe you’re accusing me of…”
“We’re not, this is a tabloid, remember?”
“And continuing, Lila going abroad after that…”
“AHA! If Lila wasn’t here, it means she couldn’t have attacked! Seh was too far away!” Alya again almost jumped from her seat.
“I would like to remind everyone that we all went to space thanks to an akuma”
“Swimming in space was the best”
“So, Lila going abroad and then returning coincides with the appearance of Mayura, which can only mean that she went to search for the Peacock Miraculous”
“Right and I’m Mayura too?”
“That’s info for another article”
Kim raised his hand.
“We’re not making another article”
Kim lowered his hand, disappointed.
“So, like we were saying, it’s highly suspicious that Lila joined the class with a 90% akumatization rate”
“Actually, it’s 87.5% akumatization rate if we count Miss Bustier”
“We counted the doubles”
“Ah”
“Why would someone join the Akuma Class, if not for gain intel about how to get more akumas”
“Not to mention the other teachers and students that have been akumatized too. Our school is a focal point for akumas… almost like the akumas came from inside the school!”
Everyone went quiet, looking at Lila with dread. Even if Marinette and Juleka were joking, they were raising very fair points. Lila seemed to be contemplating this.
“And we all have been akumatized at one time or another.” Juleka eyed Marinette. “Well, most of us. And some of us have witnessed other people becoming akumas. A common thread is that Hawk Moth knows exactly what the person wants due to his empathy powers. And Lila is a good friend who always knows what to say to make us feel better. Coincidence? Or an innate ability granted by her miraculous?!”
Lila was wide eyed looking at the two in the front. Everyone else was whispering again.
“Of course, one of the most common symptoms post akumatization is the loss of memory of what one does as an akuma. So it stands to reason that Lila might not know that she is, in fact, Hawk Moth, especially if she akumatizes herself each time so Hawk Moth takes over"
“Any questions?”
Literally everyone raised their hand. Even Miss Bustier and Markov, despite him not having hands.
“Great! That concludes our presentation.”
“Excellent job girls, you get full marks!”
Marinette and Juleka high fived each other, and went to take their respective seats. Everyone kept staring at Lila. Nathaniel slided away from Lila so much he actually fell from his seat, landing on his butt. Lila was staring at her feet, having a bit of an existential crisis
“Adrien and Markov, you’re next”

Quora.
Question: hey how are y ou doing today?
Answer: I was once pondering this very question on a train while studying abroad in Europe. Those were what I like to think of as the “lost” years of my life, when I filled my days with travel and studies to disguise by deep-seated confusion with myself. On this particular summer day on that train in the north of Spain, I found myself seated across from an older man. Something about him was, for lack of a better word, mystical, yet for the first part of the ride, I paid him no mind. I was too distracted by some university assignment or perhaps the newspaper I’d brought along with me. It wasn’t until, about midway through the train ride, he said to me...

Lucien: A Charitable Man
What if Lucien Xu was a new man with honest and benevolent intentions? A young, female journalist is skeptical of his charitable work for the church and seeks to uncover the truth behind Pastor Lucien’s personality.
I was a journalist for The Loveland Times and I was recently transferred from Loveland to a small town outside of the big city. I was assigned to investigate Pastor Lucien Xu who worked in churches for both Loveland and the small town that I had moved to for this assignment. Lucien was the head of a “mega church” in Loveland and he appeared on television for Sunday sermons, drawing in huge crowds of worshippers with his very effective rhetoric, gentle demeanor, handsome, good looks, and unparalleled charisma. More recently, there was also an upsurge in the number of new church members for the small town outside of Loveland. Both of his churches were collecting incredibly large donations, which seemed quite suspicious to me and I was determined to expose his corruption if there was any to be found.
I attended his Sunday church services with his congregation to see for myself what this young, prominent religious leader was like and perhaps better understand him and his motives. I emailed and requested that the pastor meet with me because I wanted to interview him about the donations to the church and his influence or impact on the local community. Lucien agreed to meet with me this Friday for the interview. I tried my best to remain calm, professional, and polite even though we clashed and butted heads for a bit.
First, I asked him, “For what purposes or where was the money from the donations being used? Are you planning to build more churches with that money or do you have other intentions?”  Lucien replied, “I am using that money to open and fund more children’s hospitals, orphanages, and schools, specifically new schools with a focus on teaching religion and science. I would like to take you on a personal tour of all those schools, hospitals, and orphanages if you are interested. I think the children would like to meet a friendly new face here in town and you can tell them about the big city and what it is like to be a journalist for a major newspaper. I am hoping that you can help me spread even more awareness or publicity about my charitable causes and endeavors for the sake of the sick and needy children in this small town.”
I said, “That all sounds wonderful. However, if I find that there is any shady business, I won’t hesitate to expose any and all of your corrupt schemes.” In response, he asked me, “Why do you care so much about exposing corruption?” I replied, “The people of this town are good people and have been very kind to me ever since I moved here. I won’t stand by if someone scams or harms them.” Next, Lucien asked me, “What if I have no corrupt schemes? What will you do then?” I responded, “Then, I will no longer interfere in your business and I will leave you alone.” His beautiful dark eyes had a momentary spark in them with an ominous, competitive aura as if he was motivated to challenge me and he said, “It is too late. I can’t leave you alone when you are so evidently prejudiced and misunderstand me. I live a rather humble life with only basic necessities. My house is simple, minimalist, and of adequate size for a lonely bachelor clergyman and the only most valuable possessions I own are my books. I can show you my house too if you’d like.”
The pastor surprised me with his exceptional philanthropy, humility, and persuasion. I accepted his offer to tour the local schools, orphanages, and hospitals and we visited the children together. The children were very pleased to meet me and I got along with them quite well. We made arts and crafts together and played several games. I took many photos of the happy, smiling children. They were very grateful for Lucien and the many benefactors who sponsored the schools, orphanages, and hospitals. Hence, I was able to write very positive articles about Lucien’s many charities.
Shortly after those tours, I told Lucien that I was very much inspired by his charitable works and wanted to work as a part-time teacher’s aide for the younger children in the town’s elementary school and as a pediatric nurse in the hospital. I was a sickly child when I was growing up and my grandfather, who was my biggest role model, was a nurse and he helped take care of me when my father was busy with work. The small town didn’t have major news to report often so I decided to change careers. I wanted to gain healthcare experience and help the town’s patients so I applied to and enrolled in the local nursing school. After graduating, I worked at the hospital and later travelled with Lucien to several foreign countries on medical missions trips. I volunteered in different hospitals and small clinics and wrote books about his travels and charitable deeds.
After working closely together for a year and a half, we developed feelings for each other and he asked me to be his girlfriend. Lucien back-hugged me one evening and confessed his feelings, “I have followed and admired your journalism articles for a long time ever since you were a rookie journalist. You expose and write about the hard-hitting truths or facts, not only about scandals and corruption, but you also write meaningful, heartwarming news about the better side of humanity. I think we’re a good match for each other because we are both so ambitious about helping others.” He said that the mayors of Loveland and our town were trying to set him up with their daughters, but he told them that he already declined since he had someone else in mind that he was interested in dating. I accepted his confession and decided to be his girlfriend after thinking about his request and considerate evaluation of me.
Lucien and I became engaged to each other after dating for about a year and we decided to take another trip abroad together, but it was for leisure this time instead of for work. He packed our luggages two nights ago and I was checking them today to see if any last minute adjustments were needed just in case if I had forgotten anything important before our upcoming flight tomorrow morning. I made an unexpected discovery when I found some large amounts of tightly folded wads of cash hidden away in his luggage. I confronted Lucien and asked him point blank if he was being bribed or whether he was embezzling money from his churches and charities. Why was he hiding money in his luggage?
He replied that the cash was from his own savings and that he was planning to donate the cash to a local domestic violence shelter in the area we would be visiting on the way back home since there were some women who had run away from their abusive husbands and did not bring along any cash with them when they left home. In addition, Lucien would write the shelter a generous check as another charitable donation. He wanted to start career skills workshops to train women for work so they can find stable jobs and make money to support themselves and their children.
I told him that I haven’t heard of this domestic violence shelter before and I would like to see it for myself. Lucien said, “It’s good that you haven’t let your journalist’s investigative instincts and curiosity become dulled. It is best to see the truth for yourself after all. I don’t expect you to believe my words so easily without hard evidence. It was supposed to be a surprise. I set up a new charity for domestic violence shelters for you to help me oversee these new projects. I would also like create new youth outreach after school programs for sports, arts, and music and open new homeless shelters, food banks, and soup kitchens too.”
We continued to work together for his many charities and eventually got married half a year later. It was a fulfilling life in which we were able to give back so much to our communities and support each other in doing what we were most passionate about. I didn’t expect that investigating Pastor Lucien would lead me this far down this path in which I live to dedicate myself to a higher purpose for the greater good of humanity and embrace a simpler, but more satisfying life in a small town.

The change in Lemony's life in TMM
The mental picture made by Daniel Handler about the situation of Lemony Snicket during the time of TMM pubication became very different from the mental picture made by him in TBB, TRR and TWW. While in the opening books Lemony Snicket was portrayed in a relatively safe situation, in TMM there is evidence that Lemony Snicket was no longer so safe. To begin, see the short biography of Lemony found in TMM: LEMONY SNICKET grew up near the sea and currently lives beneath it. To his horror and dismay he has no wife or children, only enemies, associates, and the occasional loyal manservant. His trial has been delayed, so he is free to continue researching and writing the tragic tales of the Baudelaire orphans for HarperCollins. By stating that his trial has been postponed, Daniel Handler shows us that Lemony Snicket was being accused of a crime at some point prior to the publication of TMM. More than that. This sentence makes us think that Lemony was pre-trial detained for this crime, but then there was a legal strategy for him to be released from prison until trial, something like a habeas corpus. Now notice what Lemony wrote in chapter 4 of TMM:   If someone offered to smuggle me out of the country in her sailboat, in exchange for free tickets to an ice show,  that  would  be  a  fair   deal. Apparently when Daniel Handler wrote LSTUA, he took advantage of these excerpts to create a subplot involving Lemony Snicket's arrest, and his subsequent escape abroad. I would like to take the time to defend my theory of the Great Hiatus and relate to this thread. My theory of the Great Hiatus states that between the publication of the book TWW and the publication of the book TMM there was a long period of many years in which Lemony was unable to publish any book because he was abroad, and many believed that he had died. I would like to enrich this concept. First of all, I don't believe Daniel Handler thought about it while he was writing TMM. The idea of the Great Hiatus must have come to Daniel Handler's mind while he was writing the LSTUA. Second, I want to avoid talking about the secret letter in TSS. Regardless of what I believe about that letter, let's talk about what we can actually prove canonically. I can say that at least until the publication of LSTUA in our universe, Daniel Handler certainly had in mind that Lemony published ASOUE's books over several years. So, let us turn our attention to the report in chapter 1 of LSTUA.: Look this excerpts from UA chapter 1. Lemony Snicket, Autor of A Séries of Unfortunate events, the purportedly true chronicles of the Baudelaire children, was reported dead today by anonymous and possibly unreliable sources... Mr. Snicket became a fugitive from justice  and was rarely seen  in public... At least, the Baudelaires' story, and his, appears to be over... A burial maybe scheduled later this year. This excerpt combines with the new situation that Lemony came to live from the publication of TMM in his universe. The gap filled by some sections of LSTUA is the gap that exists between the publication of TWW and the publication of TMM. Let's look at this in more detail. The journalist who wrote this report for the TDP newspaper certainly knew that Lemony Snicket had already published some of ASOUE's books. Now read below an excerpt from Lemony's personal notes regarding this report. "I have arrived early at the harbor and still have a few minutes before the Prospero os scheduled to appear so I thought I might jot down a few notes concerning the news of my death, which was alarming but not true. I'm, as of half -past four this afternoon, still alive, and I was most certainly alive the day I sat at Cafe Kafka with my afternoon tea and read my obituary in the newspaper. The Daily Punctilio has never been a reliable newspaper: not when I worked there as part of an under-cover assignment, not when that terrible reporter to write about the Baudelaire case and not when they advertised a sale on three-piece suits a few days ago, at a store that turned out to sell nothing but Indian rugs... The only thing that turned out to be true about my obituary was the last sentence, and this morning I had the curious experience of attending my own burial. To my astonishment, quite a crowd showed up for the event - mostly people who had believed the EARLIER stories about me IN THE DAILY PUNCTILIO and wanted to be sure that a notorious criminal was indeed dead. That is why I am waiting here at this fogged-in harbor, in order to ... The Prospero has arrived, so I ill stop writing and file these notes with my letter... It make me sad to think that my whole life, from the cradele to the grave, is full of errors, but at least that will not happen to the Baudelaires.” Daniel Handler's mental image for Lemony Snicket at LSTUA was quite evident. He became a fugitive, and went abroad. He was presumed dead. This happened (this time) after he published some of the books. In the letter of "R" to Lemony, found in LSTUA, we find a reference to this presumed death of Lemony after the publication of some of the books, and his departure abroad. But in addition, we found a reference to a letter to the editor regarding the TMM manuscript. Again I want to make it clear that I don't believe Daniel Handler thought about it all while he was writing TMM or that letter to the editor. I want to say that when Daniel Handler wrote LSTUA, he wanted to take advantage of these specific passages to create a parallel story, which happened a few years later to the main events recorded in ASOUE (If Daniel Handler later regretted it while he was writing TSS, it's another question, which I don't want to discuss here). The letter to the editor says: “To My Kind Editor, I am writing to you from the Paltryville Town Hall, where I have convinced myself the most to allow me to enter the eye-shaped office of Dr. Orwell in order to further investigate what happened to the Baudelaire orphans while they were living in the area. Next Friday, a black jeep will be in the northwest corner of the parking lot of the Orion Observatory. Break into it. In the glove compartment, you should find my description of this frightening chapter in the Baudelaires' lives, entitled THE MISERABLE MILL, as well as some information on hypnosis, a surgical mask, and sixty-eight sticks of gum. I have also included the blueprint of the pincher machine, which I believe Mr. Helquist will find useful for his illustrations. Remember, you are my last hope that the Baudelaire orphans can finally be told the general public. With all due respect, Lemony Snicket " Now watch out for some excerpts from the "R" letter. “You took a terrible chance in contacting me, but I am glad you did. I am so sorry that I was unable to prevent, or least delay, your CAPTURE at my masked ball that evening, and I have been worried sick ALL THESE YEARS THAT YOU WERE DEAD, despite rumors of your activities spreading through the network of loyal members. There are not many of us left, Mr. Snicket, but we are ready to help you in any way we can. R's letter was written after Lemony's presumed death, who spent many years presumably dead. "My Dear Mr. Snicket, Thank you, you are alive and relatively well! The night, when I arrived at the Orion Observatory to give my annual lecture to the Metrological Society, I saw someone breaking into a navy blue Jeep parked in the southwest corner of the parking lot, and my heart leaped: perhaps there was a chance you were still alive. I did not expect to find out until the man handed me his letter. " Lemony wrote: The Jeep outside the Orion Observatory was of course not navy blue but black, and parked in the northwest corner, not the southwest." R also wrote: "I can not, however, help you answer the question YOU WROTE ME ON THAT GUM WRAPPER... BEATRICE, OF COURSE, IS FAR PAST COMPLAINING ABOUT LOST POSSESSIONS – THE VERY REASON, I AM CERTAIN, THAT YOU HAVE DEDICATED YOUR LIFE RESEARCHING THE LIVES OF THOSE THREE POOR CHILDREN.” It is true that canonically there were several balls at the Duchess of Winnipeg's mansion. However, it is evident that Daniel Handler had a very clear mental picture when he wrote this letter in LSTUA: R saw the arrival of the TMM manuscript as indicated in the letter to the editor concerning TMM. Daniel Handler took advantage of the fact that he had written in that letter to the editor that there would be gum wrappers accompanying the manuscript, and included in LSTUA a letter from Lemony to R in one of those gum wrappers. What concusion we reached: When writing TMM, Daniel Handler decided to give Lemony a slightly more dangerous life. This danger to which Lemony was passing during the time of publication of ASOUE in the universe of Lemony, was increasing subtly with each book from TMM. When Daniel Handler decided to write LSTUA, Daniel Handler created a subplot in which Lemony Snicket between the publication of TWW and TMM, was captured, then arrested, and then fled abroad. Then he came back from abroad. This subplot created for LSTUA, expanded the information we had in ASOUE about Lemony's dangerous life. In LSTUA, Daniel Handler made explicit a situation in which Lemony Snicket was captured and arrested. Daniel Handler did this to match Lemony Snicket's claim that he could continue his research because his trial was postponed. And by mentioning in LSTUA that Lemony did indeed flee abroad, Daniel Handler combined this with Lemony's statement in TMM about fair trade.

What's the earliest you've ever had to wake up for work? I once had to wake up at 4:30 AM for a internship when I had to accompany my workmates at a morning show, because we had a client who had a 6 AM interview. It was SUUUUCH a hassle but I couldn’t say no because I was an intern lmao. Do you use reusable shopping bags to reduce waste? I don’t, but then again I don’t buy a lot of stuff either and when I do, I usually refuse the plastic/paper bag they put my purchase in. How many times have you moved? My parents moved a lot when I was a baby, but my memory could only remember moving two times. Where were you going the last time you were a passenger in a car? I was going to where I am now - the Starbucks at Newport. Do you know anyone who has changed their first name? Not legally, but I know of people who changed their preferred nickname over the years. I once had a friend who initially went by Micah, but i know her as Marisse now.
Are you nerdy? If so, in what ways? Eh, sure, about a couple of stuff. I know a bunch of useless trivia and can talk about wrestling/history/geography for hours, if these count as nerdy. Which one of your senses would you be the most devastated to lose? Taste.  Have you ever dated someone who posted a ton of selfies on social media? Gabie used to post a lot of selfies in like high school, so yeah. Do you know anyone who has been on life support, and survived? I don’t think so. If I do know someone, then I didn’t know it happened to them. What scent is the nearest candle? There aren’t any candles in this coffee shop. Have you ever been to Michigan? I have not. Do your parents have a strong relationship together? Yes. Really admirable considering my dad’s been working abroad for most of their marriage (for 19 years out of 22), and prior to that they only dated for 4 years. When was the last time you attended a religious service of any sort? Two Sundays ago, and I’ll be going to another one tomorrow -_____- Luckily we got to skip last week’s service because we were out of town and my dad and I immediately groaned when my mom raised the possibility of attending mass WHILE ON VACATION. Do you ever feel like you're sharing too much about yourself online? I do, but I don’t mind it. No one remembers what anyone posts (most of the time) and I keep the most important, most intimate stuff within my circle, anyway. How many windows are in the room you're in? There are two large sets of windows. Are you on good or bad terms with your most recent ex? My last technical ex is my current girlfriend, so it’s as good as it can be. What was the last necklace you wore? One that Gabie gave me. What were you doing 3 hours ago? I had stuck in traffic for two hours at that point and was increasingly growing bored, hungry, and frustrated along with my parents. Have you ever read any of Charles Darwin's works? Nope, but I’m interested. What was the first thing you did after getting out of bed today? I went back to sleep. But when I *really* woke up, I went downstairs to have breakfast. When was the last time you read a newspaper? Several months ago when I had to go through microfilm of an old newspaper for a class. If there was such a thing as a mental health first aid kit, what would you want to be in it? Adult coloring books, a newly-sharpened set of coloring pencils, history books, and a package of clay art I can work with.   Is there anyone who always seems to misunderstand everything you say? My mom. Do you think there are more dimensions than what we're able to perceive? Sure. What is currently on your bathroom counter? Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and a cup for gargling water. What was the last carbonated drink you had? I don’t consume those, but I had soda the last time only because when my friends ordered in KFC, all of them had soda while I had iced tea. Since they both looked alike, I had to have a taste of all the cups first before I got to my iced tea, meaning I had a few nasty sips of soda. Does anyone in your family have schizophrenia? I don’t think so. What light in your house was the last to have a bulb burn out? The one in our kitchen burns out a lot. What was your favorite book you ever read for a school assignment? Without Seeing the Dawn by Stevan Javellana. Do you know anyone who's always on their phone when you're trying to talk to them? People I’m not particularly close to, which I understand. Have you ever been fired? If so, did you get unemployment benefits? I’ve never had a job. Do any of your neighbors have loud children? Yes. They have loud children who keep playing in front of our house, which can be annoying. Have you ever been in an abandoned house? I don’t think so.
