I'm going to be honest, I love all dogs, I love working with all dogs, but Staffy's are some of my favourite dogs to work with, super fun, super cuddly, super smart. 11 1/2 year old Abra Durant is a perfect example of this, Just one look in those eyes tell you that he's already figured me out and has worked out how to wrap me around his paw (and he did). The treat we played with in the last picture didn't stand a chance 😄 He was all business with that. Elliot update! #Repost @whitneyblanche ・・・ Elliot spent the day at the vet yesterday to try to get some answers on his health issues. His blood work showed anemia and infection. We don’t know what is causing this yet but first course of action is to clear up that infection! He is on multiple antibiotics for 7 days and we will reevaluate then. We’re also syringe feeding him wet food to try to get his weight up. Today he had his first feeding while wrapped in his little kitty robe and he loved it! Hopefully his love for this food will help him put on some weight. He’s currently sitting at 1.6 lbs, which is very abnormal for an 11 week old kitten. 7/29/17@andymathisdvm So we took in TUG to foster. . . (Swipe left) Athens Clarke Co. Animal Control is open access, meaning that they must take in any and all strays. They ran out of room and put the word out for Tug, presently the most unadoptable dog there and the first to be euthanized if they need space. AthensPet wrote on FB- I HATE to type this, but Tug is URGENT. We don't often label dogs as urgent now--we have a low ("no kill") euthanasia rate for our dogs, even though we are a southern, open-admission, municipal shelter. But we're full. Thanks to an after-hours pull of a senior owner surrender (many thanks Angels Among Us Pet Rescue!), we have one open kennel. One. On a typical day we take in 2-3 dogs. On a typical day this summer we take in 4-5. Where will they go tomorrow, Friday? There are no dogs left that are behavioral problems with people or dogs. There are no dogs left that don't have strong supporters. There are no dogs left we haven't spent love, time, money on. So the question is: Who is stuck here, unadoptable? That leaves Tug. Tug is a good guy, and has shown no behavioral issues. But his skin is bad--he has demodex. It's not terminal. It's not contagious. It's highly treatable. But it takes time. And time is what he does not have. While he received Bravecto his first week at the shelter, it takes time for his skin to heal. And until his skin heals, he can't be neutered. His skin is too fragile. And we don't have time for it to heal. So while Tug is not the only dog at risk--*all* of the available dogs are--he's likely to be the first to go. Kitten update from foster mom! ... #Repost @whitneyblanche with @get_repost ・・・ Elliot and Ezra update! The kittens went to the vet a few days ago for their check ups and vaccinations and their vet found that both Elliot and Ezra have heart murmurs (aka hole in the heart). Elliot’s is not too bad and his vet suspects it may close on its own in time. If not, he may need medication in future. Due to his heart defect Elliot is smaller than his siblings with short little legs. He almost looks like he has dwarfism. He’s also very relaxed and not nearly as active as his brothers. He’s very happy to spend all day snuggling and if you put him on your lap he will stay for hours! His bone structure is a little wider than your average cat so his eyes are a little stretched, which causes some leakage, very similar to a Persian. Unfortunately Ezra’s murmur is quite bad. Surprisingly, you wouldn’t know it at all! He’s a gorgeous cat and he’s quite active, although not as active as his healthy brothers, Fitz and Hemingway. He just appreciates nap time more than your average 8 week old. Ezra’s hole probably will not close but this doesn’t mean he can’t still live a full life. He will likely need medication in future. Elliot and Ezra are going to stay with us awhile longer so their vet can get more information on what’s going on inside. When they are ready to go up for adoption they will be adoptable together. Elliot and Ezra have grown to depend on each other and separating them would be very difficult for them.
