Aime Nicolas Morot (b.1850 - d.1913), 'The Charmer', oil on canvas, no date (1880s), French, sold for 25,000 EUR in Sotheby's Old & 19th Century Paintings and Drawings sale, June 2013; Paris, France.
Exhibited at the Bordeaux Salon in 1885, the painting was hailed by critics: "Isn't the Charmeuse by M. Aimé Morot, in fact, the most graceful fantasy that one can imagine?" We never tire of contemplating this pretty face framed by leaves which golden it, harmonize it and whose velvety eyes fascinate those who look at them; an irreproachable execution completes this charming work that is difficult to forget ”. The Courrier de l'art in its article on the Salon considers this painting as one of the best that was exhibited there. (x)

Virtue Offsets
This post at Coromandal  hit all the buttons for a link here: interesting, infuriating, stimulating and inspiring.
It’s a short excerpt from Thomas Frank’s book Listen, Liberal and I guess I feel a bit irritated when “liberals” get called out. But it’s stimulating to reflect on Frank’s 2016 call for Democrats to recall the historical Democratic Party values--expanding opportunity, fighting for social justice, and ensuring that workers get a fair deal--in light of the 2018 elections.
I was inspired by the image Rudd used to illustrate his post, a painting The Good Samaritan by Aime-Nicolas Morot, while celebrated, I'd never seen it before. The Good Samaritan stimulated a memory of a part of Martin Luther King, Jr’s final speech. You can hear his imagination of the parable in this 5-minute Youtube clip.  And there's a fascinating sermon outline "The One-Sided Approach of the Good Samaritan" in King's papers.
