7/7/23.
Get ready for some heady comparisons. While Jeanines (New York) have been posted about and mentioned before, this hasn't happened nearly enough.
Jeanines make indie-pop that hits the Goldilocks zone. Sweet, but not too sweet, jangly but not too jangly - you get the idea. They sound like a cross between Japanese and British/Scottish pop with a large dose of Aislers Set. So yes, this reminds one of bands like Dolly Mixture, The Pastels, Television Personalities, Look Blue Go Purple - again, you get the idea.
This is a joint release by Slumberland Records and Where It's At Is Where You Are (WIAIWYA).
By the way, I'm heading out for a two-week East Coast USA trip. Micah may post more often, but I'm sure postings will come less consistently.

The Umbrellas — Fairweather Friend (Slumberland)
Tumblr media
The Umbrellas’ second album opens with a shimmer of cymbal, a bobbling pogo stick of bass, a jagged slash of guitar, hitting harder from the get-go than in the dream-poppy self-titled. Two distinct personalities emerge from songs which alternate lead singers. “Three Cheers,” and indeed, all the cuts lead sung by Matt Ferrara, leans hard into Postcard Records/C86-ish pop. Here especially, Ferrara’s scrappy heartfelt vocals give off a good whiff of Orange Juice’s Edwyn Collins, and his dueling, scrabbling guitar jangle with Morgan Stanley evokes harder, more angular bands of the era, like Fire Engines.
Then, when Stanley takes the mic, the sonics turn softer and more expansive. In careening “Goodbye,” she starts the verse against the dry tinder of drumming (that’s Keith Frerichs), the playful hop of bass (Nik Oka) then twirls and swirls in giddy “bah bah bahs” at the chorus. Her songs have the barbed sweetness of the Aislers Set and Camera Obscura.
The two switch off, both between and within songs, and some of the best cuts are the ones where they both sing. “Gone” jangles dizzily around Ferrara’s rough, pitchy romanticism, while Stanley volleys in angelic, perfect descants in a dream-scented soprano.
The Umbrella’s debut was a pleasure, but Fairweather Friend aims at deeper feelings, sharper guitar play and more rambunctious rhythms. The closing “PM” feels like it’s going to be an introspective ending, as liquid, lyrical guitars crisscross and Ferrara channels hurt and confusion. But it kicks up in a surprising way, ratcheting up the power chords, rumbling up some drums, and inviting Stanley in from the wings to lead feathery layers of melodic ecstasy. The Umbrellas have always offered bashed up, joyriding sweetness, but here they reach at—and intermittently attain—a Spector-esque wall of rock ‘n roll sound. Even better, that larger scale doesn’t undermine the vulnerability of their songs, but instead amplifies and clarifies it.

Lightheaded's Debut Album 'Combustible Gems': A Fresh Take on Classic Pop
Tumblr media
Lightheaded is a standout pop group. Their music is rich with melodious tunes and harmonious arrangements that strike a balance between sweet and poignant, both familiar and innovative. Their sound is characterized by the delightful blend of Sara Abdlebarry's dynamic and artful lead guitar on a Gretsch, complemented by the bell-like tones of Stephen Stec's Rickenbacker, all grounded by Cynthia Rickenbach’s Hofner Violin bass, reminiscent of the bass tones on Michel Polnareff's debut album. Cynthia and Stephen craft pop songs with a timeless appeal, drawing from a deep appreciation of classic influences. Cynthia's attire often includes a Gene Clark T-shirt, signaling her admiration for Dusty Springfield, The Aislers Set, and Joan Jett. Stephen, on the other hand, is heavily influenced by Big Star, The Clientele, and The Go-Betweens. Their music, much like that of The Aislers Set and Belle & Sebastian, presents a rich tapestry of pop history and top-tier rock and roll. Their first album, Combustible Gems, explores their musical identity through intricate melodies and chords, producing exceptionally captivating music. The debut single "Dawn Hush Lullaby" blends electric folk-pop with a waltz-like start, transitioning into a vibe akin to Greenwich Village pop, reminiscent of a Norma Tanega song. "Moments Notice" is an irresistibly rhythmic track that starts with a Motown or The Jam feel before Sara's mesmerizing guitar riff elevates it into a sublime pop realm. "Hugging Horizons" could be described as the sound of young New Jersey, a soulful track that ventures into innovative pop territories. The album concludes with "Because of You," which features a Johnny Marr-style guitar and lush strings, capturing a tone that is sophisticated yet earnest, and endearingly sincere. 3/14/24.
lightheaded are a 3-piece band from Long Branch, New Jersey. Their cassette release last year on Slumberland. It received a fair amount of attention and rightfully so. It's great indie pop with a 60s flair. Now, the band is set to release a full LP on vinyl no less.
In an interview in 2021, the band described their influences as such:
We love The Pastels, mark that down first. Probably the reason we started the band. They set the template. The Feelies, New Jersey legends. Got to mention them. Stephen used to live in the same town as Stan! Dwight Twilley and Phil Seymour, we love all the sorta one-off power pop bands! Felt are very special to us. Belle and Sebastian. The Clientele’s first couple records... The Go-Betweens never missed... just cut us off now, we’ll take up the whole interview.
I still really feel there is a clear Aislers Set/Tele Novella sound going on here.

Gareth Campesinos!' favourite records of the decade
December 31st, 2009
Tumblr media
This was torture, I swear. Only one album per-band (so that it wasn’t just a list of Xiu Xiu/Elverum albums. That rule occasionally stretched a little (hence no TITSJ or cLOUDDEAD etc). I’d written some stuff but Rob blew that out of the water yesterday, so here we go. Expect adjustments to be made in the comments section, as and when I realise I made horrific mistakes. A Top 20:
20. Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia – Indian Ink “Drunken strangers trying to lock their eyes onto a body that’s slowly disappearing”
19. Electrelane – The Power Out “I loved you in the morning before the sun would come / you were the dawn to me”
18. Des Ark – Loose Lips Sink Ships “You think I don’t know that my lover’s got a sickness that I can’t fuck him out of”
17. Les Mouches – You’re Worth More To Me Than 1,000 Christians “Can’t find a noose, can’t find a razor, too good a swimmer”
16. Ten Grand – This Is The Way To Rule “Don’t let them get to you first”
15. Help She Can’t Swim – Fashionista Super Dance Troupe “Not everyone looks down on you, not half as much as I fucking do”
14. The Notwist – Neon Golden “Leave me paralysed love, leave me hypnotised, love”
13. Mull Historical Society – Loss “I tried to be afraid, I think that’s what you do”
12. Desaparecidos – Read Music/Speak Spanish “Swing low satellite, hot white chariot!”
11. Tim Hecker – Harmony In Ultra Violet “…”
10. Hymie’s Basement – Hymie’s Basement “when you’re gone I nibble at your lip space”
9. The Aislers Set – How I Learned To Write Backwards “If I’d never learned to love I would never have been hit by the train”
8. Gowns – Red State “You’ve gotta look it in the eyes and say that I don’t believe, you gotta hold it under water so you see where it bleeds”
7. Black Eyes – Black Eyes “The second you touched it it started to die inside, when you said “show me your tits” we were wishing you died”
6. Hood – Cold House “We spit in the pond to give the fish something to pray to” 5. the Organ – Grab That Gun “My neck hurts / ’cause I’ve been cutting moons”
4. Former Ghosts – Fleurs “Who is going to love you like I do?”
3. The Microphones – The Glow pt. II “And, like the moon, my chest was full because we both knew we’re just floating in space over molten rock, and we felt safe and we discovered that our skin is soft”
2. Parenthetical Girls – Safe As Houses “Our hands, our glands are both on the rampage”
1. Xiu Xiu –Knife Play “This is the worst vacation ever. I am going to cut open your forehead with a roofing shingle”

(▶︎ You're Still Here | Dawn Ridingから)
You're Still Here by Dawn Riding
n San Francisco’s Mission District, there’s a Victorian house with a garden full of towering tobacco flowers and rose vines so thick they’re pulling down the fence. Every Sunday, for a great span of 2021, songwriter Sarah Rose Janko (Dawn Riding) would join producer & engineer Alicia Vanden Heuvel (Aislers Set, Magic Trick) there, to play guitar, sing harmonies, and hum lines for other instruments, before retreating to Alicia’s basement recording studio (Speakeasy Studios SF), to roll tape on her Otari half-inch 8-track. This is how, week by week, Dawn Riding’s new record You’re Still Here, was chipped out of the ethereal and into an expansive album of meticulously crafted and deeply captivating songs. It’s an album steeped in intimacy and warmth, each song built with a level of restraint that leaves room for Sarah Rose’s quietly fierce vocals and her powerful songwriting to sit front and center. Nothing is rushed and each song is presented almost as a vignette: some with so much stillness you can feel the relationships, some that build from the heart’s interior solitude into swells of emotional catharsis. You’re Still Here is a songwriter’s album and Sarah Rose Janko, in the tradition of great American folk musicians, is laying most of her cards on the table - endearing you to her portraits of American life, and leaving you thirsty for the stories that haven’t yet been told.クレジット2022年11月11日リリース All songs written by Sarah Rose Janko You’re Still Here marks Dawn Riding’s third full-length album, and is a co-release by The Long Road Society and Speakeasy Studios SF, two women-owned Bay Area record labels. The credits reveal a wealth of Bay Area musicians lending their talents, with multi-instrumentalist Vanden Heuvel acting as producer and musical arranger: Sarah Rose Janko - vocals, guitar, piano Hall McCann - electric guitar, vocals Jasmyn Wong - drums Alicia Vanden Heuvel - bass, organ, drums Keenah Silver Fassett - drums Jessie Leigh Smith - harmonica Jacob Aranda - pedal steel, violin Anna Hillburg - trumpet
