finished “mental tsuyome bijou shirakawa-san”. i initially only wanted to watch it since 2 of the supporting coworkers are my queen akimoto sayaka and mr durandal from saber, and i’m bisexual for both of them. (and shirakawa herself is yaiba yua for any 01heads.) but i ended up liking the show as a whole a bit more than i thought i would.

i’d describe it as like... tokusatsu gagaga for normies. much less funny, but the vibe is still kinda similar. with this energetic lead girl who ends up accruing a group of female friends at her workplace. and she and kano both have this figment of their imagination they interact with, though of course shishileo is a delightful guy whereas shirakawa-san talks to this horrid stuffed animal that like represents her secret less positive thoughts.

that’s one part of the show i’m a little conflicted on. the fact that shirakawa’s super gungho #unbothered “mentally strong spirit” is kind of just a faking it til she makes it thing? and when she goes home her social anxieties of the day catch up with her. (and later we learn she was bullied as a teenager and such.) there’s a part of me that wishes it was 100% real. that she was just born as this legit force of nature. like the godai yusuke of office ladies or smth.

but it makes sense. the target audience for this show would logically want her to be both relatable and aspirational. “inwardly she just like me fr so maybe i could become more like her outwardly too.” and her hidden inner turmoil does make for a few emotional moments when the new friends she’s helped turn around and help her in return.

it starts off on a not so great 2 eps with talk of dieting and ~who does the cute guy at work like~ but once it gets going i found it to be a mostly nice watch. the other women in the office are written like such cartoonish middle school tier mean girls it’s kind of insane but the central friend group is sweet. the vibes between shirakawa and umemoto in particular compelled me... could’ve been f/f ship of the year for me if they’d gotten a few more good moments
